The Grandiloquent Dictionary

Donations Page

Let me begin by stating clearly that the Grandiloqent Dictionary will always remain available for free online, or at least for as long as I can maintain it. I am grateful to the hundreds of thousands of people who have enjoyed it, and to the many who have contributed to it, built spin-off projects from it, or simply praised it.

However over the past few years, it has been suggested by a number of correspondents that I should expand it both in terms of the number of entries, and in the details of each entry. Some have suggested, quite reasonably, that I should go back over it and add formal pronunciations to the words. Unfortunately with so many other ventures in my professional life, I simply lack the time to do it myself.

Therefore I held a discussion thread in a forum, as well as a survey, on how I should handle these requests. The consensus was that a "Donations" page should be added to the website, with donations being used to offset the bandwidth costs, and that a crowd funding campaign should be initiated for the purpose of hiring summer students to assist me in rewriting the dictionary.

If successful, this rewrite would be the biggest revision of the Grandiloquent Dictionary since I first wrote it over twenty years ago. I expect that this would require at least two assistants working for a full year, and as such I am hoping to raise sufficient funds for a project of this size. If more money than the goal is raised, I will seek input from my supporters as to how else I might improve the website.

Meanwhile, contributions to the crowd funding campaign can be made at "Update the Grandiloquent Dictionary" on GoFundMe. I am still working on setting up a separate account for general donations to cover bandwidth and other expenses.

Regardless of the outcome of these two campaigns, the dictionary will always remain free to the general public and your humble author will always remain grateful to the legions of fans who have made this project so enjoyable!
