  • 1994 - In the Kuril Islands, a magnitude 8.3 earthquake occurs. At least ten people killed or missing and extensive damage on Iturup; at least 340 people injured and extensive damage occurred along the east coast of Hokkaido, Japan. Felt in the Tokyo area, Japan. Tsunami wave heights up to 3.46m.
  • 1995 - France launches a counter-coup in the Comoros with 600 soldiers. They arrest Bob Denard and his mercenaries and take Denard to France. Caabi el-Yachroutu becomes the new interim president.
  • 1995 - Hurricane Opal makes landfall at Pensacola Beach, Florida as a Category 3 hurricane with 115 mph winds.
  • 1995 - Nintendo releases the Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island game for the Super NES in the US.
  • 1997 - One million men gather for Promise Keepers' "Stand in the Gap" event in Washington, DC.
  • 1997 - Gunpei Yokoi, inventor and toy maker, dies of an auto accident. He designed Nintendo's Game & Watch handheld games, Game Boy, and Game Boy Pocket.
  • 1997 - The second largest cash robbery in U.S. history ($17.3 million, mostly in small bills) occurs at the Charlotte, North Carolina office of Loomis, Fargo and Company. An FBI investigation eventually results in 24 convictions and the recovery of approximately 95 percent of the stolen cash.
  • 2000 - Panama-registered tanker Natuna Sea runs aground damaging four of its cargo tanks, spilling 8.2 million litres of oil in Indonesian waters off the Batu Berhanti Beacon.

  • 2001 - Rickey Henderson of the San Diego Padres breaks Ty Cobb's record to become the leading run-scorer in baseball history, with 2,246th runs.

  • 2001 - A hunter shoots a hole in the trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline, causing a leak of 1.1 million litres of oil into the wilderness.
  • 2001 - Siberia Airlines Flight 1812 crashes over the Black Sea en route from Tel Aviv, Israel to Novosibirsk, Russia; 78 are killed.
  • 2004 - The White Knight carrier plane launches SpaceShipOne rocket plane, piloted by Brian Binnie, which flies into space (69.6 miles high) and back. Because of this second successful flight within 2 weeks of the first flight, the Scaled Composites company wins the Ansari X Prize of US$10 million.
  • 2004 - Death of Bruce Palmer of a heart attack; bassist (The Mynah Birds, The Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Neil Young).
  • 2004 - Two car bombs kill at least 16 people and injure dozens more in Baghdad, Iraq.
  • 2005 - Birth of Prince Emmanuel of Belgium, son of Crown Prince Philippe of Belgium.
  • 2005 - Hurricane Stan hits Mexico and Central America, killing over 1,620 people.

  • 2011 - 100 people are killed in a car bombing in the Somali capital Mogadishu.
  • 2011 - The Universal Postal Union officially welcomes the Republic of South Sudan as its 192nd member.
  • 2011 - The death toll from the flooding of Cambodia's Mekong River and attendant flash floods reaches 207.
  • 2014 - Death of Jean-Claude Duvalier, 41st President of Haiti (born 1951).
  • 2017 - Death of Liam Cosgrave, 6th Taoiseach of Ireland (born 1920).
  • 2019 - Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam and the Chief Executive in Council invokes the Emergency Regulations Ordinance, banning the face mask in public gatherings with immediate effect.
  • 2021 - Fumio Kishida becomes the 100th Prime Minister of Japan, succeeding Yoshihide Suga.
  • 2022 - Death of Loretta Lynn at age 90; country music singer ("One's on the Way", "I'm a Honky Tonk Girl" (1960), Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year (1972), Academy of Country Music's Artist of the Decade (1970s), 16 number 1 songs, 45 million albums sold worldwide).
