  • 2002 - About 50 Chechen rebels storm the Moscow Palace of Culture theater, taking up to 700 people hostage during a performance of a popular musical.
  • 2004 - Brazil's "Operation Cajuana" launches its first rocket into space, the VSB-30, just 14 months after its space program experienced a deadly launch pad accident.
  • 2004 - In Germany, Wilhelm Genazino wins the Georg Büchner Prize for Literature.
