  • 1990 - Agreement is reached between German Democratic Republic and Federal Republic of Germany on the exchange of currency as the East takes on the Deutsches-mark as its currency. The currencies are to be exchanged 1:1 with some variations for given categories of exchange. At a maximum 6,000 east marks may be exchanged at the 1:1 rate.

  • 2008 - In Saada, north Yemen, a bombing at the Ben Salman mosque kills at least 15 and injures 55.
  • 2008 - A plane crashes in southern Sudan, killing at least 22, including Sudan's defence minister Dominic Dim Deng and senior presidential adviser Justin Yak. The plane's pilot reported engine trouble, but the plane blew up before he could make an emergency landing.
  • 2008 - Maiden voyage of Royal Caribbean International's Independence of the Seas cruise ship.
  • 2008 - Marvel Entertainment releases the film Iron Man to theaters in the USA. Marvel produced the film itself, at a cost of about US$150 million plus US$75 million in marketing.
  • 2008 - In the Patagonia region of Chile, volcano Chaiten begins erupting for the first time in over 9000 years. Two nearby towns are completely evacuated.
  • 2008 - Death of Mildred Loving in the USA, at age 68. Loving was a black who married a white, and the ACLU fought for court recognition that the state could not infringe on marriage.
  • 2009 - At Churchill Downs, the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby horse race takes place. Canadian horse Mine That Bird wins, the second-biggest upset in Derby history.
  • 2009 - Marilyn French, author of The Women's Room, dies of heart failure at age 79 in New York.
  • 2009 - The Pilgrim's Plunge water ride opens at Holiday World in Indiana, USA, the world's largest water ride drop at 131 feet high and 45-degree slope.
  • 2010 - The Eurozone and the International Monetary Fund agree to a 110 billion euro bailout package for Greece. The package involves sharp Greek austerity measures.
  • 2012 - A pastel version of The Scream, by Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, sells for US$120 million in a New York City auction, setting a new world record for an auctioned work of art.
  • 2015 - Birth of Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.
  • 2021 - The SpaceX Crew-1 mission ends, returning four crew members of Expedition 64 and 65 to Earth from the International Space Station aboard Crew Dragon Resilience.
  • 2022 - Death of Kailia Posey in Whatcom County, Washington, USA, by suicide at age 16; actor (Toddlers & Tiaras).
  • 2023 - About 11,500 film and television writers of the Writers Guild of America go on strike in the USA; previous strike was 15 years ago.
  • 2023 - Death of Tori Bowie at age 32, found dead; American track-and-field athlete (2017 World Championships - gold), co-founder and president of Saysh.
