  • 1397 - Two documents are produced at Kalmar by members of the three Scandinavian kingdoms, one announcing the king's coronation, the other declaring a union of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden with a common king, but separate laws for each realm.
  • 1410 - Polish and Lithuanian forces capture Teutonic Knights' castle at Gilgenburg.

  • 1938 - First paid television theatre, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. 200 spectators pay 25 cents to witness a variety show with dancing and song, lasting 45 minutes. The acts are performed on a floor above the theatre and transmitted downstairs by TV.

  • 1982 - In the first All-Star game played outside the United States, the National League records its 11th straight win beating American League at Montreal's Olympic Stadium, 4-1.
  • 1982 - In Canada, the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation launches the Super Loto lottery game, with top prize CDN$1 million.
  • 1984 - The New York Yankees retires Roger Maris (number 9) and Elston Howard (number 32) uniform numbers. The team also erects plaques in their honor to pay tribute to their achievements.
  • 1984 - Sergei Bubka of USSR pole-vaults a record 5.89 metres.
  • 1984 - Death of Philippe Wynne of a heart attack while on stage in Oakland, California, USA; singer (The Spinners, "I'll Be Around", "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love", "Then Came You").
  • 1985 - U.S. Vice President George H.W. Bush serves as Acting President for eight hours, while President Ronald W. Reagan undergoes colon cancer surgery.
  • 1985 - Live Aid rock concert is staged in London, Philadelphia, Moscow, and Sydney. An estimated 1.5 billion television viewers in 169 countries watch 16 hours of performances by 180 pop musicians. Over US$110 million (£50 million) is raised for the Band Aid Trust, for African famine relief efforts.
  • 1986 - In the California - Mexico border region, a magnitude 5.3 earthquake occurs.
  • 1990 - In the Hindu Kush region, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake occurs. At least 43 mountain climbers killed on Pik Lenina, USSR by an avalanche triggered by the earthquake.
  • 1990 - Paramount releases the film Ghost to theaters.
  • 1994 - Death of Eddie Boyd in Helsinki, Finland at 80; blues musician ("Five Long Years" (1952)).
  • 1995 - Dozens of cities in the USA, most notably Chicago and Milwaukee, set all-time record high temperatures. Hundreds of people in these and other cities die as the heat wave reaches its peak.
  • 1997 - The remains of Che Guevara are returned to Cuba for burial, alongside some of his other comrades.
  • 2001 - Beijing wins the bid to host the 2008 Summer Olympics.
  • 2002 - A lightning strike sets off the Sour Biscuit Fire in Oregon and northern California, which is left to burn 499,570 acres (2,022 square km).
  • 2003 - Death of Compay Segundo, Cuban musician (Buena Vista Social Club) (born 1907).
  • 2004 - Ken Jennings crosses the $1 million mark in his 30-game winning streak on the TV show Jeapardy.
  • 2005 - Three trains collide in Ghotki, Pakistan, killing over 150 people.
  • 2006 - Death of Red Buttons AKA Aaron Chwatt at age 87 of vascular disease; actor/comic (The Red Buttons Show TV show, The Double Life of Henry Phyfe TV show, Knots Landing TV show, Roseanne TV show, Street Time TV show, ER TV show).
  • 2007 - The 15th Pan Am Games opens in Rio de Janeiro.
  • 2008 - Carnival Cruise Lines introduces the Carnival Splendor cruise ship (113,300 gross tons, 3006 passengers), its biggest ship. The ship begins a series of 12-day Northern European cruises from Dover, England.
  • 2008 - In Paris, France, French President Nicolas Sarkozy launches a new international body, the Union for the Mediterranean, with 43 member nations aimed at ending conflict in the Middle East.
  • 2008 - US Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson unveils an emergency plan to save Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, mortgage holders of US$5.2 trillion.
  • 2010 - The 81st All Star game of Major League Baseball is played at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, with the National League defeating the American League 3-1 for the first time since 1996.
  • 2010 - George Steinbrenner, New York Yankees owner (1973-), dies at age 80 in Tampa, Florida, after a heart attack.
  • 2012 - Fox releases the film Ice Age: Continental Drift to theaters.
  • 2016 - Home Secretary Theresa May becomes new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
  • 2017 - Death of Liu Xiaobo, Chinese human rights activist and Nobel laureate (born 1955).
  • 2019 - Hurricane Barry strikes the Gulf Coast, killing one and causing over US$500 million in damages.
  • 2020 - Death of Hasan al-Lawzi, Acting Prime Minister of Yemen (born 1952).
  • 2021 - After the nepal Supreme Court declares his incumbency unconstitutional, KP Oli is succeeded by Sher Bahadur Deuba as 43rd Prime Minister of Nepal.
  • 2022 - Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa leaves the country by miliatry jet, headed for Malé, Maldives.
