  • 2009 - British TV talk show host Simon Dee (real bame Nicholas Henty-Dodd), one of the biggest stars on British TV in the 1960s (Dee Time), dies at the age of 74 of bone cancer, in Winchester, Hampshire, England.
  • 2009 - In Spa, Belgium, round 12 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship is won by Kimi Räikkönen.
  • 2009 - In Indianapolis, USA, round 12 of the FIM MotoGP Championship is won by Jorge Lorenzo.
  • 2009 - Japan's Democratic Party of Japan win a landslide general election over the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, 308 seats to 119, throwing out the party after almost 50 years of rule. New prime minister will be Yukio Hatoyama.
  • 2017 - Death of Károly Makk, Hungarian film director and screenwriter (born 1925).
  • 2020 - The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 passes 25 million worldwide.
  • 2021 - The UN Environment Programme announces that leaded petrol in road vehicles has been phased out globally, a hundred years after its introduction.
  • 2021 - The United States withdraws its last remaining troops from Hamid Karzai International Airport, Kabul, ending 20 years of operations in Afghanistan.
  • 2022 - Death of Mikhail Gorbachev at age 91; last secretary general of the USSR (1985-1990), last president of the USSR (1990-1991).
