  • 1944 - British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery launches Operation Market Garden, with 14 divisions. Nearly 2000 American CG-4A and 700 British Horga and Hamilcar gliders are launched from southern England, carrying the British 2nd Army and the US 101st Airborne Division. They land along 60 miles of road in Holland, leading into Germany. The objective is to capture bridges at Grave, Nijmegen, and Arnhem over the Rhine river.

  • 2007 - The bank run on Scotland's Northern Rock ends when chancellor of the exchequer announces all Northern Rock deposits will be 100 percent guaranteed by the British government.
  • 2008 - Somchai Wongsawat, brother-in-law of ousted Thai leader Thaksin Shinawatra, wins a majority parliamentary vote to become the country's new prime minister.
  • 2008 - The International Astronomical Union classifies Haumea as the fifth dwarf planet in the Solar System.
  • 2008 - Russia's Moscow stock markets are closed after stocks fell to the lowest level in almost three years. The country's Finance Minister plans to support the three largest banks with 60 billion rubles (US$2.3 billion) in loans.
  • 2011 - Occupy Wall Street protests begin in the United States. This develops into the Occupy movement which spreads to 82 countries by October.
  • 2017 - Death of Bobby Heenan, American professional wrestling manager (born 1944).
  • 2020 - The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 passes 30 million worldwide.
  • 2020 - France, Germany, and the United Kingdom issue a joint note verbale to the United Nations rejecting China's claims to the South China Sea, and supporting the ruling in Philippines v. China that said the historic rights per the nine-dash line ran counter to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. However the statement says that on "territorial sovereignty" they "take no position".
  • 2021 - Death of Abdelaziz Bouteflika, 7th President of Algeria (born 1937).
  • 2022 - The name of the capital city of Kazakhstan is changed from Nur-Sultan to Astana, the name it previously had from 1998 until 2019. The city is the Guinness World Record holder for having most name-changes.
