  • 1938 - British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain replies to Czech President Eduard Benes saying the British-French proposal is the only way to avoid war, the Czech reply places full responsibility for war on the Czechs, and that Britain would not fight for Czechoslovakia. The Czech government decides to capitulate.
  • 1938 - Winston Churchill warns of the futility of appeasing Adolf Hitler: "The belief that security can be obtained by throwing a small state to the wolves is a fatal delusion.".
  • 1938 - Hurricane (winds 183 MPH) in New England (Long Island, New York, New Jersey) kills 500-700, wrecking tens of millions of dollars in property.
  • 1939 - France completes a twenty-day general mobilization, with six million men ready for action.
  • 1939 - (1330 hours) In Bucharest, Rumania, six Iron Guards assassinate Prime Minister Armand Calinescu. This is intended as a prelude to a Nazi uprising, but is quickly stopped by police. Nine men are captured and executed before midnight.

  • 1973 - Nate Archibald signs seven-year contract with NBA's Kansas City Kings for US$450,000.
  • 1974 - Jacqueline Susann, author (Valley of the Dolls), dies at age 53 of cancer.
  • 1974 - US Mariner 10 makes second fly-by of Mercury.
  • 1974 - Death of Walter Brennan at age 80 of emphysema; character actor (three supporting actor Oscars, The Real McCoys, The Tycoon, The Guns of Will Sonnett, "Old Rivers", "Dutchman's Gold").
  • 1976 - In Washington, DC, Orlando Letelier (age 44) is killed by remote-controlled bomb in his car. Also killed is Ronni Moffit (age 25) in the car. The killer is Michael Townley, member of Argentina's secret police.
  • 1976 - Computer Shack is incorporated in the USA, created by William Millard.
  • 1979 - John McQuade, actor (Charlie Wild Private Detective), dies at age 73.
  • 1980 - Los Angeles Rams' Johnnie Johnson scores a 99-yard interception.
  • 1980 - Richard Todd of the New York Jets completes 42 passes in a game (NFL record).
  • 1981 - Belize gains independence from Britain (National Day).
  • 1981 - Steve Carlton strikes out National League record 3,118th (Andre Dawson).
  • 1982 - 2,251 turn out to see the Montreal Expos play the New York Mets at Shea Stadium.
  • 1982 - New Jersey Devils beat New York Rangers 3-2 in exhibition; first hockey in Meadowlands (New Jersey).
  • 1982 - NFL players begin a 57-day strike.
  • 1982 - San Francisco cable cars cease operations on Market Street after 122 years of service, for two years of repairs.

  • 1985 - Near the coast of Guerrero, Mexico, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurs. Additional casualties and damage in the Mexico City area. Felt in many parts of central Mexico. Local tsunami recorded at Acapulco with maximum amplitude of 1.4 metres.

  • 1991 - IAEA inspectors discover files on Iraq's hidden nuclear weapons program. Iraqi officials confiscate documents from UN weapons inspectors, refusing to allow them to leave the site without turning over other documents.
  • 1991 - The NBC TV network debuts the Disney TV show The Torkelsons.
  • 1993 - ABC airs the first episode of TV show NYPD Blue.
  • 1993 - In Oregon, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurs.
  • 1996 - Death of Geoffrey Wilkinson, English chemist, Nobel Prize laureate (born 1926).
  • 1997 - The AIS, the FIS' armed wing, declares a unilateral ceasefire in Algeria.
  • 1998 - NBC airs the first episode of TV show Will and Grace.
  • 1999 - A large earthquake registering 7.6 on the Richter scale shakes Taiwan. About 2,400 people killed, 8,700 injured, 600,000 people left homeless and about 82,000 housing units damaged. Damage estimated at US$14 billion, leading to a two-week halt to manufacturing of many components of personal computers.
  • 2000 - McAfee.com and F-Secure researchers discover the first handheld computer virus "Phage", which targets the Palm OS.
  • 2001 - Sports return to New York for the first time since the terrorist attacks with the New York Mets/Atlanta Braves game at Shea Stadium. Mike Piazza hits a two-run home run in the 8th inning off Steve Karsay to win the game 3-2.
  • 2001 - Deep Space 1 flies within 2,200 km of Comet Borrelly.
  • 2002 - Death of Robert Lull Forward, American author and physicist (born 1932).
  • 2003 - Galileo mission is terminated by sending the probe into Jupiter's atmosphere, where it is crushed by the pressure at the lower altitudes.
  • 2007 - The Supreme Court of Chile rules that former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori must be extradited to Peru so Fujimori can face charges of corruption and human rights abuse.
  • 2007 - The Canadian dollar reaches parity with the American dollar for the first time since 1976.
  • 2007 - Death of Hallgeir Brenden, Norwegian athlete (born 1929).
  • 2008 - In Islamabad, Pakistan, a suicide truck bomb kills at least 54 people at the Marriott Hotel. At least 270 people were injured in the blast.
  • 2008 - The US Treasury proposes to Congress a fund worth up to US$700 billion of taxpayer money to buy back much of the bad debt held by banks and other financial institutions.
  • 2008 - The United States claims the 2008 Ryder Cup golf trophy with a 16.5-11.5 victory over Europe.
  • 2008 - Nearly 13,000 children in China are hospitalised after drinking the milk of the Sanlu Group containing the industrial chemical melamine; four have died. Melamine was first found in baby milk powder made by the Sanlu Group.
  • 2008 - Jose Molina hits the last home run in the 85-year history of Yankee Stadium in New York, to give the New York Yankees a 7-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles. The stadium will be demolished, replaced by a new US$1.3 billion Yankee Stadium across the way from the exisiting facility.
  • 2009 - A 6.1-magnitude earthquake strikes Bhutan and neighboring Himalayan regions, killing ten people and damaging houses, monasteries, and roads.
  • 2010 - A helicopter crash kills nine American troops in Afghanistan, making 2010 the deadliest year of the war since 2001 for foreign troops.
  • 2013 - al-Shabaab Islamic militants attack the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, killing at least 62 civilians and wounding over 170.
  • 2019 - U.S. President Donald Trump approves deployment of several hundred troops and military equipment to Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates following the September 14 attack on Saudi oil refineries.
  • 2021 - U.S. special envoy to Haiti Daniel Foote resigns.
  • 2021 - Death of Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, Egyptian field marshal, Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (born 1935).
  • 2022 - Death of John Hamblin at age 87; Australian TV host (Play School).
