Personal computer history:

  • 1968 - An advertisement in Science magazine by Hewlett-Packard introduces first programmable scientific desktop calculator, which Hewlett-Packard calls "the new Hewlett-Packard 911A personal computer".
  • 1990 - The Fox Network airs the Beverly Hills 90210 TV show in the USA. The school newspaper room has several Macintosh computers.
  • 1999 - Red Hat begins shipping Red Hat Linux 6.1 operating system. Included is the Star Office 5.1a office suite. Price ranges from US$29.95 to US$140.95.
  • 1999 - Intel announces the official name for the 64-bit processor code-named Merced: Itanium.
  • 1999 - Palm Computing launches the Palm VII handheld computer with wireless support in 260 cities throughout the US. The Palm.net network costs start at US$9.99 for 80 transactions, with access to email, Internet messaging, and over 100 content providers.
  • 1999 - Palm Computing introduces the Palm Vx handheld computer. It is based on the Palm V design, expanding memory from 2 to 8 MB.
  • 2000 - Maxtor announces it will acquire Quantum's hard drive business, for about US$1 billion in stock.
  • 2001 - In San Francisco, California, and London, England, Microsoft introduces the Pocket PC 2002 operating system. Code-name during development was Merlin.
  • 2001 - Compaq Computer introduces the iPaq H3870 handheld computer. It features 206 MHz Intel StrongARM SA-1110 processor, 64 MB RAM, Bluetooth wireless communications, 65,536 color TFT screen, Secure Digital expansion slot, Pocket PC 2002 operating system. The battery provides about 12 hours of operation. Price is US$649; the unit is due by mid-November.
  • 2001 - Casio introduces the Casio Cassiopeia E-200 handheld computer. It features 64 MB RAM, CompactFlash Type II slot, Secure Digital and MultiMedia Card slot, Pocket PC 2002 operating system, USB connection, 206 MHz Intel StrongARM SA-1110 processor, 65,536-color reflective TFT display. Price is US$599; weight is 7 ounces; size is 5 x 3.1 x 0.6 inches.
  • 2001 - Toshiba America Information Systems introduces the Toshiba Pocket PC e570 handheld computer. It features 206 MHz Intel StrongARM SA-1110 processor, 64 MB RAM, CompactFlash Type II slot, SecureDigital slot, 65,536-color reflective display, and Pocket PC 2002 operating system. The battery provides about 8 hours of operation. Price is US$569; the unit is to be available in November.
  • 2004 - PalmOne releases the Tungsten T5 handheld computer in the US. It features 416 MHz Intel XScale processor, 256 MB flash memory, SecureDigital slot, 320x480 color display, Palm OS 5, Bluetooth wireless connectivity. Price is US$400.
  • 2004 - India issues a 5 rupee postage stamp depicting a computer.
  • 2006 - Comedy Central airs the South Park TV show in the USA. The episode centers around the World of Warcraft computer game. Several characters play in the game, attempting to defeat a powerful player.
  • 2009 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA.
    • An old desktop personal computer "ADDGOOD" appears, with "WORD JAMMERS" software.
    • A laptop computer is used to access the Internet.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1926 - Film Booking Offices releases the Alice Comedy film Alice in the Wooly West to theaters.
  • 1929 - Disney completes the Silly Symphony film Springtime.
  • 1956 - Disneyland welcomes its five millionth guest.
  • 1964 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring Nikki, Wild Dog of the North, part two.
  • 1984 - Sid Bass buys Irwin Jacobs' Disney stock for US$61 per share, giving Bass Brothers Enterprises nearly 25 percent of the company.
  • 1985 - Turks and Caicos Islands issues ten postage stamps depicting scenes from Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean ride, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Disneyland.
  • 1991 - Disney generally releases the film Paradise to theaters.
  • 1993 - Disney releases the film Skin Deep for educational use.
  • 1993 - The Mission to Mars attraction at Walt Disney World closes.
  • 1993 - The Land Grille Room restaurant in Epcot closes.
  • 1995 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the film Dead Presidents to selected theaters.
  • 1996 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film D3: The Mighty Ducks to theaters in the USA.
  • 2002 - The Disney Channel airs the Original Disney Channel Movie The Scream Team.
  • 2009 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. The character Shary Bobbins appears, who previously appeared in a parody of Mary Poppins.
  • 2009 - Disney Stores cease sales of Disney Dollars.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1973 - In Paris, France, the Paris Salon automobile show is held. General Motors premieres the 390-ci mid-engined Corvette Four-Rotor show car. It features a 390-ci rotary engine built by Zora Arkus-Duntov, body styling with gullwing doors designed by Bill Mitchell. The car is the former XP-882, with the four-rotor engine in place of the V-8. The Corvette Two-Rotor show car is also shown.
  • 1990 - The Fox Network airs the Beverly Hills 90210 TV show in the USA. A current model purple Corvette convertible is driven in this and many episodes by one of the lead characters.

World War II history:

  • 1943 - Adolf Hitler decides not to withdraw to Northern Italy, but to prepare a firm defence called Winterstellung from rivers Garigliano and Rapido in the west, and the river Sangro in the east.
  • 1944 - In the mid-Atlantic, German submarine U-1227 hits Canadian frigate Chebogue with an acoustic torpedo.
  • 2002 - Russia issues a postage stamp marking the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad.

Video game history:

  • 1995 - Nintendo releases the Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island video game for the Super NES in the US.
  • 1997 - Gunpei Yokoi, inventor and toy maker, dies at age 56 when struck by a car on an expressway in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. Yokoi designed Nintendo's Game & Watch handheld games, Game Boy, and Game Boy Pocket.
  • 2002 - Majesco Sales releases the BloodRayne video game for the PlayStation 2 in the USA.
  • 2004 - Nintendo releases the Mario Pinball Land video game for the Game Boy Advance in the US.
  • 2004 - Midway releases the Mortal Kombat: Deception video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. One character asks another what to do the rest of the day. The other replies "...play video games?".
  • 2005 - Ubisoft releases the Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - Capcom releases the Mega Man Zero 4 video game for the Game Boy Advance in the US.
  • 2005 - Konami releases the Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow video game for the Nintendo DS in the USA.
  • 2005 - Atlus releases the Trauma Center: Under the Knife video game for the Nintendo DS in the USA.
  • 2006 - Comedy Central airs the South Park TV show in the USA. A character wears a t-shirt saying "Dwarf Needs FOOD!", a reference to the Gauntlet video games.
  • 2009 - Nintendo releases the Wii Fit Plus video game for the Nintendo Wii in the USA.
  • 2009 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. Twins play handheld video games (like Nintendo Game Boy Advance) in opening credits.
  • 2011 - 2K Sports releases the NBA 2K12 video game for the PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, and Xbox 360 in the US.
  • 2011 - Namco Bandai releases the Dark Souls video game for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the US.
  • 2011 - Bethesda releases the Rage video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1999 - In Vancouver, British Columbia, the Royal Canadian Mint lanuches the October 1999 25-cent Millenium coin, entitled A Tribute to First Nations.
  • 2000 - In Toronto, the Royal Canadian Mint launches the Creativity 25c Millenium coin, designed by Erik Kong Tat Hui.

USA coin history:

  • 2010 - The Denver Mint begins production of the 2010 Mount Hood National Forest quarter dollar for circulation.

Sports history:

  • 1901 - Columbia (US) beats Shamrock II (England) in 12th America's Cup.
  • 1906 - Chicago Cubs win their 116th game (116-36) of the year.
  • 1913 - Freddy Wilson of Regina Roughriders kicks ten singles in a game.
  • 1922 - The entire World Series of Baseball is broadcast over radio for the first time over WJZ New York City and WGY Schenectady.
  • 1923 - Young Stribling held light-heavyweight boxing championship for the shortest amount of time (3 hours). Referee overturns the decision.
  • 1924 - New York Giants become first team to appear in four consecutive World Series (World Series #21).
  • 1940 - Wrestling returns to Madison Square Gardens after 12 year lay off.
  • 1944 - The Saint Louis World Series: Saint Louis Cardinals versus Saint Louis Browns; Browns win first World Series game in their only appearance (World Series #41).
  • 1948 - Cleveland Indians beat Boston Red Sox, 8-0, in first American League playoff game.
  • 1955 - Brooklyn Dodgers only World Series victory, beating New York Yankees in 7 (World Series #52).
  • 1959 - First World Series Baseball game (#56) played west of Saint Louis (in Los Angeles).
  • 1962 - Whitey Ford's World Series 33 2/3 scoreless inning streak ends (World Series #59).
  • 1964 - Boston Patriots' Gino Cappelletti kicks 6-of-6 field goals against Denver Broncos.
  • 1964 - Saint Louis Cardinals clinch National League pennant.
  • 1967 - First World Series since 1948 not to feature New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, or Los Angeles Dodgers (World Series #64).
  • 1969 - Baseball's first divisional playoff games, New York Mets beat Atlanta Braves 9-5 and Baltimore Orioles beat Minnesota Twins 4-3 in 12 innings.
  • 1970 - Jan Stenerud of Kansas City Chiefs kicks 55-yard field goal.
  • 1981 - Pasakevi Kouna of Greece (age 9) is youngest international gymnastics participant.
  • 1984 - New York Yankees clinch American League East.
  • 1985 - Henry G Perry completes 157-day, 14,021 mile bicycle tour of Australia.
  • 1987 - First "Scrub Sunday" of NFL football with replacement players.
  • 1987 - Toronto Blues Jays lose final seven games of the season, allowing Detroit Tigers to win the American League pennant in four straight games.
  • 1987 - James Jefferson of Winnipeg Blue Bombers scores two touchdowns on interception returns without making an interception. (He scored on laterals).
  • 1991 - NHL New York Rangers trade Bernie Nichols to Edmonton Oilers for Mark Messier.
  • 2001 - Rickey Henderson of the San Diego Padres breaks Ty Cobb's record to become the leading run-scorer in baseball history, with 2,246th runs.
  • 2009 - In Estoril, Portugal, round 14 of the FIM MotoGP Championship is won by Jorge Lorenzo.
  • 2009 - In Suzuka, Japan, round 15 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship is won by Sebastian Vettel.
  • 2009 - In Spain, round 11 of the FIA World Rally Championship is won by Sébastien Loeb.
  • 2021 - At SAP Center in San Jose, California, USA, NHL pre-season game: Anaheim Ducks beats San Jose Sharks by score 3-2.
  • 2021 - At Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, NHL pre-season game: Edmonton Oilers beats Calgary Flames by score 4-3.
  • 2021 - At Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA, NHL pre-season game: Minnesota Wild beats Colorado Avalanche by score 3-1.
  • 2021 - At Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan, USA, NHL pre-season game: Chicago Blackhawks beats Detroit Red Wings by score 6-4.
  • 2021 - At KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York, USA, NHL pre-season game: Columbus Blue Jackets beats Buffalo Sabres by score 5-3.
  • 2021 - At Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, NHL pre-season game: Toronto Maple Leafs beats Ottawa Senators by score 3-1.
  • 2021 - At Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, NHL pre-season game: Philadelphia Flyers beats Boston Bruins by score 2-1.
  • 2021 - At Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, USA, NHL pre-season game: New Jersey Devils beats Washington Capitals by score 4-1.

Space exploration history:

  • 1957 - USSR launches Sputnik I, the first artificial Earth satellite.
  • 1960 - Courier 1B launched; first active repeater satellite in orbit.
  • 1965 - USSR launches Luna 7; will crash land on Moon.
  • 2004 - The White Knight carrier plane launches SpaceShipOne rocket plane, piloted by Brian Binnie, which flies into space (69.6 miles high) and back. Because of this second successful flight within 2 weeks of the first flight, the Scaled Composites company wins the Ansari X Prize of US$10 million.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1995 - Hurricane Opal makes landfall at Pensacola Beach, Florida as a Category 3 hurricane with 115 mph winds.
  • 2005 - Hurricane Stan hits Mexico and Central America, killing over 1,620 people.
  • 2011 - The death toll from the flooding of Cambodia's Mekong River and attendant flash floods reaches 207.

USA history:

  • 1862 - Battle of Corinth ends.
  • 1916 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average of American stocks expands from 12 to 20 stocks. The index removes National Lead, Peoples Gas, General Motors and U.S. Steel pfd., and adds American Beet Sugar, American Can, American Locomotive, American Smelting, American Telephone & Telegraph, Baldwin Locomotive, Goodrich, Republic Iron & Steel, Studebaker, Texas Company, Utah Copper, Westinghouse, and Western Union.
  • 1931 - Dick Tracy, a comic strip detective character created by cartoonist Chester Gould, makes its debut appearance in the Detroit Mirror newspaper.
  • 1949 - American Contract Bridge League votes 58.5 percent to keep blacks out.
  • 1960 - Courier 1B launched; first active repeater satellite in orbit.
  • 1976 - US Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz resigns due to telling a racial joke.
  • 1977 - Pier 39 opens in San Francisco, California.
  • 1983 - Richard Noble sets a new land speed record of 1019 kph (633.468 mph), driving Thrust 2 jet-powered car at the Black Rock Desert, Nevada.
  • 1984 - US government closes down due to budget problems.
  • 1985 - The Free Software Foundation is founded in Massachusetts, USA.
  • 1988 - Pillsbury stock soars $18.37 to $57.37 on takeover bid.

  • 2001 - A hunter shoots a hole in the trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline, causing a leak of 1.1 million litres of oil into the wilderness.
  • 2004 - The White Knight carrier plane launches SpaceShipOne rocket plane, piloted by Brian Binnie, which flies into space (69.6 miles high) and back. Because of this second successful flight within 2 weeks of the first flight, the Scaled Composites company wins the Ansari X Prize of US$10 million.
  • 2006 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average closes above 11,800 for the first time rising 123.27 points, or 1.05%, finishing at 11,850.61.
