Personal computer history:

  • 1981 - Digital Equipment announces its entry into the personal computer field, with attachments for their VT-100 terminals: a card with 8-bit microprocessor, two floppy disk drives, and 64 kB RAM. The system will run CP/M operating system, and cost about US$2400.
  • 1998 - The antitrust trial of the US Justice Department against Microsoft begins. Government lawyers spend three hours detailing acts that allegedly show that Microsoft attempted to illegally maintain a desktop operating system monopoly and used predatory tactics to create a new monopoly for Web browser software.
  • 2004 - The Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California inducts five visionaries as fellows: Dan Bricklin, Bob Frankston, Niklaus Wirth, Erich Bloch, and Bob Evans. Bricklin and Frankston created the VisiCalc spreadsheet software. Wirth created the Pascal programming language. Bloch and Evans were key members of the IBM team that created the System/360 mainframe architecture.
  • 2004 - Apple Computer introduces a new low-end iBook portable computer. It features 1.2 GHz G4 processor, DVD reader / CD writer drive, 12-inch LCD screen, 256 MB DDR266 RAM, 133 MHz bus, ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 with 32 MB DDR RAM, 30 GB hard drive, 1024x768 pixel graphics, AirPort Extreme wireless networking, two USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 400 port, 100BaseT Ethernet port, 56 Kbps v.92 modem. Price is US$999.
  • 2004 - Apple Computer introduces a new midrange iBook portable computer. It features 1.33 GHz processor, DVD reader / CD writer drive, 14-inch screen, 256 MB DDR266 RAM, 133 MHz bus, ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 with 32 MB DDR RAM, 60 GB hard drive, 1024x768 pixel graphics, AirPort Extreme wireless networking, two USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 400 port, 100BaseT Ethernet port, 56 Kbps v.92 modem. Price is US$1299.
  • 2004 - Apple Computer introduces a new high-end iBook portable computer. It features 1.33 GHz G4 processor, 256 MB RAM, 60 GB hard drive, DVD/CD writer SuperDrive, 14.1-inch 1024x768 resolution LCD display, AirPort Extreme card, 802.11g woreless, 2 USB 2.0 ports, FireWire 400 port, Ethernet port, v.92 modem. Price is US$1499.
  • 2004 - Apple Computer introduces new Power Mac G5 computers. They feature single 1.8 GHz to dual 2.5 GHz processors, 80 or 160 GB hard drive, Nvidia GeForce Fx 5200 Ultra card in 8X AGP slot, 256 MB DDR400 SDRAM, 8X SuperDrive, three 33 MHz 64-bit PCI slots, AirPort Extreme slot, two FireWire 400 ports, one FireWire 800 port, three USB 2.0 ports, 600 MHz front-side bus.
  • 2004 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the 2.4 GHz Athlon 64 4000+ processor. It features 1 MB cache. Price is US$729 in 1000-unit quantities.
  • 2004 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the 2.6 GHz Athlon FX-55 processor. It features 1 MB level 2 cache, 0.13-micron fabrication. Price is US$827 in 1000-unit quantities.
  • 2005 - Costa Rica issues a postage stamp depicting a child at a computer, showing a mouse and keyboard.
  • 2005 - Apple Computer announces a new Power Mac featuring a dual-core 2.0 GHz PowerPC G5 processor, 512 MB RAM, 160 GB hard drive, Nvidia GeForce 6600 LE video card with 128 MB video RAM, three PCI Express expansion slots, 16x SuperDrive with double-layer support, FireWire 800 port, two FireWire 400 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, two USB 1.1 ports, optical and digital audio input and output, and 802.11g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 support. Price is US$1,999.

  • 2005 - Apple Computer announces the Power Mac G5 Quad computer. It features two dual-core 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5 processor, 512 MB RAM, 250 GB hard drive, Nvidia GeForce 6600 LE video card with 256 MB video RAM, three PCI Express expansion slots, 16x SuperDrive with double-layer support, FireWire 800 port, two FireWire 400 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, two USB 1.1 ports, optical and digital audio input and output, and 802.11g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 support. Price is US$3,299, available in November.
  • 2006 - In Monza, Italy, the 2006 World Cyber Games are held. About 700 players from 70 countries attend. Total prize money is US$435,000.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1955 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, featuring The Story of the Silly Symphony.
  • 1975 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled Seems There Was This Moose.
  • 1989 - The Wonders of Life pavilion opens in EPCOT Center at Walt Disney World. It includes the Body Wars attraction, and the Cranium Command show, and Goofy over Health film.
  • 1990 - Uganda issues ten postage stamps depicting various Disney characters.
  • 1994 - Walt Disney Home Video releases the film White Fang 2: Myth of the White Wolf on laserdisc for US$39.99.
  • 1999 - The Lyceum Theatre in London, England, hosts the premiere of The Lion King stage show.
  • 2000 - The stage musical The Lion King opens in Los Angeles.
  • 2003 - ABC Family airs the Touchstone television two-hour TV movie Beautiful Girl.
  • 2005 - Disney releases the film Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch on videocassette and DVD in Italy.
  • 2010 - The Disneynature film The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos is released on home video in the USA.

  • 1987 - "Black Monday": stock markets around the world suffer an unexpected dramatic drop, with the American Dow Jones Industrial Average falling 22.6%, the largest one-day drop in recorded stock market history.
  • 1992 - Corvette program manager Russ McLean informs his staff that the GM Strategy Board has placed all projects after 1996 on hold or cancelled, including the 1997 Corvette.
  • 1995 - General Motors names Dave Hill Corvette's vehicle line executive, a new title in General Motors' ongoing restructuring.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - In Angora, Turkey signs a Treaty of Mutual Assistance with Great Britain and France. If Turkey enters the war, France and Great Britain commit to providing assistance.
  • 1940 - Convoy SC-7 from Nova Scotia begins arriving in Great Britain. Of 34 original ships, 20 were sunk, and a further two damaged.
  • 1940 - Royal Canadian Navy auxiliary minesweeper Bras d'Or sinks in the Gulf of St. Lawrence with all forty of the crew.
  • 1941 - A state of siege is declared in Moscow.
  • 1943 - 300 miles off Oahu, Hawaii, Japanese submarine I-36 launches a floatplane to survey Pearl Harbor. It succeeds undetected, and returns to its mother submarine.
  • 1945 - Defendants of war crimes accusations in Nuremberg jail are served with indictments.

Video game history:

  • 2004 - Sega releases the ESPN NBA 2K5 video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2004 - Take-Two releases the Robotech Invasion video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2004 - Konami releases the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle Nexus video game for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, Game Boy Advance, and GameCube in the US.
  • 2008 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. Two generic arcade video game units appear.
  • 2010 - Bethesda Softworks releases the Fallout: New Vegas video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.
  • 2010 - Activision releases the DJ Hero 2 video game for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii in the US.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1911 - The Royal Mint sends a pair of matrices and two pairs of punches for a one dollar coin to the Ottawa branch mint, along with a lead trial essai 1911-dated $1 coin.
  • 1911 - Chief clerk of the Royal Mint writes to James Bonar advising that a package containing one pair of matrices and two pairs of punches for a $1 coin had been shipped to Ottawa.
  • 1931 - Canada officially suspends gold standard.

Sports history:

  • 1856 - James Kelly and Jack Smith fight bareknuckle for 6 hours 15 minutes in Melbourne.
  • 1919 - Cincinnati Reds beat Chicago White Sox, five games to three in 16th World Series. This series is known as the black sox scandal as seven White Sox players throw the series.
  • 1933 - Berlin Olympic Committee votes to introduce basketball in 1936.
  • 1943 - New York Yankees' second baseman Joe Gordon announces retirement (hates New York).
  • 1949 - New York Yankees trade Joe Gordon to Cleveland Indians for Allie Reynolds.
  • 1957 - Maurice "Rocket" Richard, Montreal Canadiens, becomes first NHL player to score 500 goals.
  • 1967 - Igor Ter-Ovanesyan of USSR, sets long jump record at 27 feet 4 3/4 inches.
  • 1969 - Oakland Raiders' Darryle Lamonica passes for six touchdowns vs Buffalo Bills (50-21).
  • 1974 - Detroit Red Wings' Mickey Redmond scores the first hat trick against Washington Capitals.
  • 1981 - Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Montreal Expos 2-1, in the deciding game of the National League Championship Series.
  • 1987 - Billy Martin hired as manager of New York Yankees for fifth time.
  • 2005 - The Houston Astros baseball team win their first National League Championship to advance to their first-ever World Series in franchise history.
  • 2008 - At the Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Boston Red Sox 3-1 to win the American League championship 4-3 and reach the World Series for the first time in their 11-year existence.
  • 2021 - At Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, NHL regular season game: Edmonton Oilers beats Anaheim Ducks by score 6-5.
  • 2021 - At Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA, NHL regular season game: Minnesota Wild beats Winnipeg Jets by score 6-5.
  • 2021 - At Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, NHL regular season game: Nashville Predators beats Los Angeles Kings by score 2-1.
  • 2021 - At United Center in Chicago, Illinois, USA, NHL regular season game: New York Islanders beats Chicago Blackhawks by score 4-1.
  • 2021 - At Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan, USA, NHL regular season game: Detroit Red Wings beats Columbus Blue Jackets by score 4-1.

Space exploration history:

  • 1859 - Wilhelm Tempel discovers diffuse nebula around Pleid star Merope.
  • 1967 - Mariner 5 makes fly-by of Venus.
  • 2009 - European astronomers announce they have found 32 new planets orbiting stars outside our solar system bringing the total of known exoplanets to about 400.
  • 2018 - The unmanned European-Japanese spacecraft BepiColombo is launched on a seven-year journey to Mercury.

  • 1979 - 13 US Marines die in a fire at Camp Fuji, Japan as a result of Typhoon Tip.
  • 2005 - Hurricane Wilma swells into a Category 5 storm.

USA history:

  • 1781 - At Yorktown, Virginia, British General Lord Cornwallis surrenders 8,000 British soldiers and seamen to a larger Franco-American force, effectively bringing an end to the American Revolution.
  • 1818 - US and Chicasaw Indians sign a treaty.
  • 1831 - Assets of the Bank of the United States are liquidated at public auction.
  • 1864 - Approximately 25 Confederates make surprise attack on Saint Albans, Vermont.
  • 1864 - Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia; USA beats back Confederate attackers.
  • 1943 - Researchers at Rutgers University isolate Streptomycin, the first antibiotic remedy for tuberculosis.
  • 1951 - President Harry S Truman formally ends state of war with Germany.
  • 1953 - First jet transcontinental nonstop scheduled service.
  • 1960 - Martin Luther King Junior arrested in Atlanta, Georgia sit-in.
  • 1960 - The US imposes an embargo on exports to Cuba.
  • 1973 - US President Richard Nixon asks Congress for US$2.2 billion aid to Israel.

Canada's TSX 300 index drops 407 points, a record 11.3 percent. England's FTSE index sdrops 250 points, representing value of US$107.5 billion. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index drops 420 points, an 11 percent drop.
  • 1987 - Four US destroyers in the Persian Gulf fire 1000 5-inch rounds on the Iranian Rashadat offshore oil installation.
  • 1988 - Three Americans win Nobel Prize in physics; three West Germans win chemistry Nobel Prize.
  • 1988 - US Senate passes bill curbing ads during children's TV shows.
  • 1989 - The Wonders of Life pavilion opens at Walt Disney World's Epcot in Orlando, Florida.
  • 1998 - Travelers Group changes its company name to Citigroup Incorporated.
  • 2006 - On the 19th anniversary of the 1987 stock market crash, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closes above 12,000 for the first time, at 12,011.73.

  • 1781 - Cornwallis surrenders at Yorktown at 2 PM; American Revolutionary War ends.
  • 1812 - Napoleon begins his retreat from Moscow.
  • 1818 - US and Chicasaw Indians sign a treaty.
  • 1872 - World's largest gold nugget (215 kg) found in New South Wales.
  • 1919 - Reds beat White Sox, 5 games to 3 in 16th World Series of baseball. This series is known as the black sox scandal as seven White Sox players threw the series.
  • 1950 - United Nations forces enter Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea.
