Personal computer history:

  • 1988 - Netherlands Antilles issues a 115-cent + 55-cent semi-postage stamp for Youth Car Campaign, depicting a girl at a computer.
  • 1997 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A missile is fired, with the "Intel Inside" logo on the outside.
  • 1998 - Symantec buys Quarterdeck for US$65 million.
  • 2007 - Apple releases the Mac OS X "Leopard" operating system for Macintosh computers. Price is US$129 for a single user or $199 for up to five computers in a single household.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1926 - Disney ships the 42nd Alice Comedy film, Alice at the Carnival, to Winkler Pictures.
  • 1935 - The Silly Symphony film Three Orphan Kittens is released to theaters.
  • 1939 - Walt Disney shows a rough cut of Pinocchio to Joe Rosenberg of Bank of America, and Ned Depinet and George Schraefer of RKO.
  • 1945 - The Donald Duck film Cured Duck is released to theaters. Daisy also appears.
  • 1955 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, featuring the film The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, part of the film The Adventures of Icabod and Mr. Toad.
  • 1969 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled The Feather Farm.
  • 1974 - The NBC TV network airs All-Disney Night featuring Mysteries of the Deep and The Parent Trap. Parent Trap film, The
  • 1986 - Donald Duck is shown for the first time in the People's Republic of China. Chinese television launches a weekly half-hour of old Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse cartoons.
  • 1986 - Gurgi's Munchies and Crunchies fast-food facility opens in Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1986 - The ABC TV network airs The Disney Sunday Movie, entitled The B.R.A.T. Patrol.
  • 1994 - Walt Disney Home Video releases the animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on videocassette for US$26.99, and laserdisc for US$29.99-100.
  • 1997 - The ABC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring the two-hour movie Tower of Terror, based on the theme park attraction Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.
  • 1999 - Walt Disney Home Video releases the film Pinocchio on DVD.
  • 2003 - The American Space Experience exhibit closes at Disneyland.
  • 2004 - Disney releases the film Mulan on DVD in the US. Price is US$29.99.
  • 2007 - The Touchstone film Dan in Real Life is released to theaters in the USA.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1953 - A Chevrolet Work Order instructs engineering to install a V-8 engine in Corvette #3951 as a test of such installation in 1955 model production Corvettes.
  • 1983 - The 750,000th Corvette rolls off the production line. The car is a white 1984 coupe, driven off the line by General Motors' employee Wayne Vollmer. Vollmer is the only employee who has worked on Corvette since 1953. The new car is purchased by Hugh Patterson.
  • 1988 - The Callaway Sledgehammer Corvette reaches a top speed of 254.76 mph at the Transportation Research Center in Ohio.
  • 1989 - The National Broadcasting Company airs the Cheers TV show in the USA. A mechanic refers to a fuel line blockage. Another person says "Oh my God, it's the Corvette.". Later, in interviewing potential buyers for his Corvette, the seller is shocked that the buyer would drive the car in the sun at noon.
  • 2003 - At the Isle Grand Prix Circuit in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Grand Prix race is held, round ten of the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge GT series.
    • Finishing 3rd is the 3R Racing #73 Corvette Z06, driven by Phil McClure.
    • Finishing 9th is the Black Dog Racing #25 Corvette, driven by Tony Gaples.
    • Finishing 10th is the Tiger Racing #99 Corvette Z06, driven by Thomas Oates.
    • In 11th place, but not finishing the race, is the WIT Racing #68 Corvette, driven by Kevin Chambers.
    • Finishing 12th is the WIT Racing #31 Corvette, driven by Keith Videtto.
    • Finishing 15th is the Metric Chemical #35 Corvette Z06, driven by David Farmer.

  • 2003 - At the end of the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge GT series, Corvette racer rankings in the top ten by driver points: 3rd Phil McClure, 7th David Farmer, 10th Thomas Oates.
  • 2003 - In San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Gracd Prix race is held, round eleven (final) of the Trans-Am Series for the BFGoodrich Tires Cup.
    • Finishing 2nd is the Revolution Motorsports #10 Corvette, driven by Bobby Sak.
    • Finishing 5th is the #23 Corvette, driven by Bob Ruman.
    • Finishing 8th is the #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.
    • Finishing 11th is the Revolution Motorsports #2 Corvette, driven by Don Sak.
    • In 16th place, but not finishing the race, is the #59 Corvette, driven by Simon Gregg.
    • Finishing 17th is the #20 Corvette, driven by Garrett Kletjian.
    • Finishing 21st is the #15 Corvette, driven by Jeff Emery.
    • In 22nd place, but not finishing the race, is the #72 Corvette, driven by Edison Lluch.

  • 2021 - Chevrolet reveals the 2023 C8 Corvette Z06, with new LT6 V8 engine, 5.5 litre, 670hp at 8400rpm, 460 lb-ft torque.

World War II history:

  • 1942 - (evening) Two German panzer divisions cross the Terek river, surprising the Soviet 37th Army, blocking roads out of Nalchik.
  • 1944 - The Battle of Leyte Gulf ends, as the Japanese fleet withdraws. The Japanese lost 34 ships, including four carriers, three battleships, and forty cruisers.
  • 1944 - 711 British bombers attack Essen, Germany.
  • 1944 - (1845 hours) A German V-2 rocket lands at Palmers Green Station in north London. No one is killed, but injuries are 15 serious, 38 minor.

Video game history:

  • 1983 - Atari introduces versions of some of its video games for use on other video game systems and home computers.
  • 2000 - Sony Computer Entertainment introduces the Sony PlayStation 2 in the US. It features 294.912 MHz processor, single analog DualShock2 controller, two memory card slots, two USB ports, one i-Link (IEEE 1394) port, 128-bit Emotion Engine graphics processor. The system can also play PlayStation games, and supports DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, CD-ROM, DTS, and Dolby Digital media. Size is 12 x 3.5 x 7 inches; weight is 5 pounds; price is about US$300. Extra peripherals: 8 MB memory card US$34, controller US$34, Multitap adapter US$34.
  • 2000 - Agetec releases the Armored Core 2 video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2000 - Tecmo releases the Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2000 - Koei releases the Dynasty Warriors 2 video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2000 - Konami releases the ESPN International Track & Field video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2000 - Konami releases the ESPN Winter X Games Snowboarding video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2000 - Agetec releases the Eternal Ring video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2000 - Agetec releases the Evergrace video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.

  • 2010 - Microsoft Game Studios releases the Fable III video game for the Xbox 360 in the US.
  • 2010 - Electronic Arts releases the Rock Band 3 video game for the PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, and Xbox 360 in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1905 - By the Karlstad Convention, the Union of Norway and Sweden is formally dissolved. King Oskar renounces the Norwegian throne, and declines to elect a prince of his to the throne.

Canadian coin history:

  • 2001 - In Toronto, the Canadian Coinoisseur company conducts the Torex Auction, over two days. Some highlights:
    • 5 cents 1921 ICCS VG-10: $2750;
    • 25 cents 1900 PCGS MS-65: $7150;
    • 50 cents 1900 PCGS MS-63: $29,700;
    • gold sovereign 1908c ICCS SP-65: $5060.

  • 2002 - In Toronto, Ontario, the Torex coin show is held. The Canadian Coinoisseur performs the auction, combined for the first time with eBay Live Auctions. Some highlights:
    • 10 cents 1875-H ICCS MS-64: $35,200;
    • 25 cents 1882-H ICCS MS-65: $14,300;
    • 25 cents 1904 ICCS MS-63: $14,300;
    • 25 cents 1894 PCGS MS-65: $26,400;

Sports history:

  • 1863 - Football Association forms in England, standardizing soccer.
  • 1869 - First American steeplechase horserace (Westchester, New York).
  • 1887 - Detroit (National League) beats Saint Louis (AA) 10 games to 5 in the World Series.
  • 1911 - Philadelphia Athletics beat New York Giants, 4 games to two in 8th World Series.
  • 1950 - Branch Rickey resigns as Brooklyn Dodgers' president.
  • 1951 - Rocky Marciano knocks out Joe Louis in the 8th round at Madison Square Garden, New York, USA.
  • 1960 - American League announces Minneapolis and Los Angeles to get teams in 1961.
  • 1960 - American League's Washington Senators move to become Minnesota Twins.
  • 1974 - Cleveland Coliseum opens for NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers and MISL's Crunch.
  • 1980 - Saint Louis Cardinals sack Baltimore Colts' quarterbacks an NFL record-tying 12 times.
  • 1981 - Los Angeles Dodgers beat New York Yankees, four games to two in 78th World Series.
  • 1982 - Steve Carlton becomes first pitcher to win four Cy Young awards.
  • 1993 - The Carolina Panthers become the NFL's 29th franchise and the first expansion team since 1976.
  • 1996 - The New York Yankees win their 23rd World Series (first since 1978) with a 3-2 victory over the defending World champs Atlanta Braves in Game 6. John Wetteland is named Most Valuable Player of the series.
  • 1997 - The Florida Marlins win Game 7 of the 1997 World Series against the Cleveland Indians 3-2 in 11 innings.
  • 1998 - Catcher Mike Piazza signs the most lucrative contract in Major League Baseball history: over US$91 million for a seven-year deal.
  • 2000 - The New York Yankees defeat the New York Mets in Game 5 of the 2000 World Series, 4-1, to win their 26th World Series title. This was the first matchup between the two crosstown rivals.
  • 2005 - The Chicago White Sox of the American League defeat the Houston Astros of the National League in four games to win the World Series Fall Classic. This gives the team its first World Championship since 1917.
  • 2005 - In the finale of the Japanese baseball series, the Chiba Lotte Marines win their first league championship in 31 years, defeating the Hanshin Tigers. Coach Bobby Valentine becomes the first foreign manager to win the Japan Series in the 70-year history of Japanese baseball.
  • 2021 - At Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington, USA, NHL regular season game: Seattle Kraken beats Montreal Canadiens by score 5-1.
  • 2021 - At Honda Center in Anaheim, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Winnipeg Jets beats Anaheim Ducks by score 4-3.
  • 2021 - At Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, NHL regular season game: Minnesota Wild beats Vancouver Canucks by score 3-2.
  • 2021 - At Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, NHL regular season game: Nashville Predators beats San Jose Sharks by score 3-1.
  • 2021 - At Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado, USA, NHL regular season game: Vegas Golden Knights beats Colorado Avalanche by score 3-1.
  • 2021 - At PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, NHL regular season game: Tampa Bay Lightning beats Pittsburgh Penguins by score 5-1.
  • 2021 - At Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, USA, NHL regular season game: Calgary Flames beats New Jersey Devils by score 5-3.

  • 1966 - First Pacific communications satellite launched, Intelsat 2.

USA history:

  • 1825 - Formal opening of the Erie Canal, 364 miles long from the Hudson River, New York City to Lake Erie, Buffalo.
  • 1861 - Last ride of the Pony Express, between Missouri and California.
  • 1868 - B F Randolph, South Carolina state senator, is assassinated.
  • 1868 - White terrorists kill several blacks in Saint Bernard Parish, Louisiana.
  • 1876 - US President sends federal troops to South Carolina.
  • 1881 - In Tombstone, Arizona, USA, the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday face off against the Clanton-McLaury gang in a shootout at the OK Corral. The Earp brothers consist of bank security guard Wyatt, town marshal Virgil, and Morgan. The Clantons (Ike, Billy) and McLaurys (Tom, Frank) and Billy Claiborne are cowboys, cattle rustlers, thieves, and murderers. The 30-second shootout ends with Billy Clanton and the McLaury brothers dead, and Virgil and Morgan Earp and Doc Holliday wounded.
  • 1893 - Battleship USS Oregon is christened at a launching ceremony in San Francisco Bay, California.
  • 1903 - Yerba Buena is first Key System ferry to cross San Francisco Bay, California.
  • 1916 - Margaret Sanger is arrested for obscenity (advocating birth control).
  • 1921 - US President Warren Harding appoints Solomon Porter Hood US Minister to Liberia.
  • 1936 - The first electric generator at Boulder Dam goes into full operation.
  • 1940 - The US P-51 Mustang makes its maiden flight.
  • 1941 - U.S. Savings Bonds go on sale to the public.
  • 1942 - US ship Hornet sunk in Battle of Santa Cruz Islands.

  • 2008 - American commandos make a raid on a farm in Syria, across from Iraq. The Syrian government claims eight civilians killed.
  • 2020 - The US Senate confirms Amy Coney Barrett to join the US Supreme Court.

  • 1881 - Shootout at the OK corral, in Tombstone, Arizona.
  • 2008 - The International Monetary Fund reaches an agreement with Ukraine for a US$16.5-billion loan package to help the country.
