Personal computer history:

  • 1998 - Microsoft re-releases Office 97 Service Release 2. This update had been released a month ago, but distribution was suspended to correct occasional improper installations.
  • 2001 - Microsoft releases Works Suite 2002 software package. It includes Word 2002, Encarta Encyclopedia Standard 2002, Money 2002 Standard, Picture It! Photo 2002, Streets & Trips 2002, and Works 6.0. Price is US$109.
  • 2007 - Apple ships the 2 millionth copy of Mac OS X Leopard.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1929 - The Silly Symphony film Hell's Bells is released to theaters. This is the first cartoon directed by Ub Iwerks.
  • 1930 - The Silly Symphony Winter is released to theaters.
  • 1959 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring the second "The Swamp Fox" episode, Brother Against Brother.
  • 1960 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring the Zorro episode El Bandido.
  • 1966 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Gallegher Goes West: Crusading Reporter.
  • 1969 - Disney hosts a press conference at the Ramada Inn in Ocoee, Florida, unveiling models and plans for Phase One of the Walt Disney World resort.
  • 1977 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled Halloween Hall of Fame.
  • 1982 - The CBS TV network airs the Walt Disney show, entitled Disney's Halloween Treat.
  • 1985 - The Gambia issues ten postage stamps depicting various Disney characters in scenes from Life on the Mississippi by Mark Twain.
  • 1985 - Grenada issues six postage stamps depicting various Disney characters in scenes from The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain.
  • 1985 - Sierra Leone issues five postage stamps depicting Disney characters in Rumpelstiltskin.
  • 1985 - Sierra Leone issues five postage stamps depicting Disney characters in Mark Twain quotes.
  • 1987 - NBC airs the TV special Disney's DTV Monster Hits.
  • 1989 - The film The Making of Me opens in the Wonders of Life pavilion in EPCOT Center at Walt Disney World.
  • 1989 - The Disney Channel begins airing the Treasure of Lost Creek serial on the Mickey Mouse Club.
  • 1992 - Disney releases the film Beauty and the Beast on videocassette. One million copies sell on the first day.
  • 1996 - The Buzz Lightyear's Pizza Planet Restaurant opens in Discoveryland in Disneyland Paris. Formerly Space Festival.
  • 2005 - Disney premieres the animated feature film Chicken Little in Hollywood, California.
  • 2009 - The Disney Cruise Line announces the upcoming cruise ship Disney Dream will include the world's first shipboard water coaster ride, the Aquaduck; inside cabins will include a Virtual Porthole displaying live ocean-view video from cameras placed on the exterior of the ship, and in youth areas a 103-inch video screen will feature Crush and Stitch characters in real-time conversation with kids.
  • 2010 - The Disney Dream cruise ship floats out from the Meyer Werft shipyard at Papenburg, Germany.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 2007 - In Las Vegas, Nevada, the SEMA show is held, over four days. Pratt & Miller show off a Corvette C6RS supercar: 8.2 litre (500 ci) aluminum V8, 600 hp, 600 lb-ft torque, carbon fiber body.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - British destroyers Harvester and Highlander sink German submarine U32.
  • 1940 - British Bomber Command is given its first directive sanctioning area-bombing.
  • 1941 - A German submarine torpedoes American fleet oiler Salinas off the American east coast. The ship is able to limp to a port.
  • 1944 - Japanese suicide plane crashes through the flight deck of USS Franklin in the Leyte Gulf, Phillipines. 56 dead, 30 wounded, worst US aircraft carrier fire to date.
  • 1944 - 110 British bombers attack German gun and troop positions on Walcheren island.
  • 1944 - (evening) 905 British bombers attack Cologne, Germany.
  • 1945 - In Crete, the court at Heraklion sentences one woman to death, one woman to life in prison, lighter penalties on another man and woman, and acquits another man, all on charges of collaboration and responsibility for deaths of 35 Cretans. Following announcement of the sentences, 2000 storm the building, killing all five.
  • 2000 - Grenada issues fourteen postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
  • 2000 - Grenada - Carriacou & Petite Martinique issues 18 postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Video game history:

  • 1987 - In Japan, NEC releases the PC Engine video game system. It features 64 kb VRAM, 7.16-MHz 8-bit HuC6280A CPU, 384x256 pixel graphics, 16-bit HuC6260 and HuC6270A graphics processors, 256 colors of 512 palette, 64 sprites, games on HUCards with up to 512 kb.
  • 1998 - Lucas Arts releases the Grim Fandango video game.
  • 2001 - In Los Angeles, California, Nintendo hosts a Hollywood party to celebrate the opening of Cube Clubs nationwide. The locations allow players to try out GameCube games prior to the launch of the system.
  • 2002 - Nintendo releases a dial-up modem and a network adapter for the GameCube. Price of each is US$35.
  • 2002 - The European Union fines Nintendo 168 million euros (about US$147 million) for colluding with game distributors to sell products at different prices in different parts of Europe, in violation of European Union treaties.
  • 2005 - Ubisoft releases the Heroes of the Pacific video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2006 - CW Television Network airs the TV show The Game in the USA. Two men play a football game on an Xbox 360 with wireless controllers.
  • 2012 - Ubisoft releases the Assassin's Creed III video game for the PlayStation 3, Vita, and Xbox 360.
  • 2012 - Electronic Arts releases the Need for Speed: Most Wanted video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Swedish history:

  • 1520 - At the Franciscan cloister in Stockholm, a Danish bishop proclaims Kristian king of Sweden by inheritance.
  • 1611 - King Karl dies at Nyköping.
  • 1950 - Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf ascends to the throne as King Gustaf VI Adolf. Carl Gustaf becomes Crown Prince.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 1987 - A & W Concentrate Company applies for a trade-mark of a modified oval logo with an extra brown oval around the former logo.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1997 - The Minister of Public Works and Government Services and the Minister responsible for the Royal Canadian Mint announces that the Royal Canadian Mint will build a plating facility adjacent to the mint in Winnipeg.

Sports history:

  • 1871 - Philadelphia Athletics beat Chicago White Stockings for first National Association baseball pennant.
  • 1919 - Baseball league presidents call for abolishment of the spitball.
  • 1973 - Tom Seaver becomes first non-20-game winner to win baseball Cy Young award.
  • 1974 - The "Rumble in the Jungle" boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman takes place in Kinshasa, Zaire. Ali knocks out Foreman in the 8th round.
  • 1975 - John Bucyk, Boston Bruins, becomes 7th NHL player to score 500 goals.
  • 1988 - Jim Elliott (US) completes 24-hour paced outdoor race for 548.9 miles.
  • 1988 - New York Jets finally beat Pittsburgh Steelers for first time.
  • 1988 - Ayrton Senna clinches his first Formula One World Championship with a phenomenal drive in the Japanese Grand Prix, recovering from 16th place on the first lap to win the race and beat rival Alain Prost into second place.
  • 1989 - The qualification for the 1990 Football World Cup ends.
  • 2007 - Brazil is announced as the host of the FIFA World Cup 2014.
  • 2008 - The Philadelphia Phillies win the World Series of baseball, their first since 1980, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays four games to one. Game Five was suspended in the sixth inning on October 28 due to rain, with the score tied 2-2.
  • 2021 - At Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, NHL regular season game: Edmonton Oilers beats Vancouver Canucks by score 2-1.
  • 2021 - At Scotiabank Saddledrome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, NHL regular season game: Calgary Flames beats Philadelphia Flyers by score 4-0.
  • 2021 - At Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado, USA, NHL regular season game: Colorado Avalanche beats Minnesota Wild by score 4-1.
  • 2021 - At Enterprise Center in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA, NHL regular season game: Saint Louis Blues beats Chicago Blackhawks by score 1-0.
  • 2021 - At SAP Center in San Jose, California, USA, NHL regular season game: San Jose Sharks beats Winnipeg Jets by score 2-1.
  • 2021 - At PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, NHL regular season game: New Jersey Devils beats Pittsburgh Penguins by score 4-2.
  • 2021 - At Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, NHL regular season game: Toronto Maple Leafs beats Detroit Red Wings by score 5-4.
  • 2021 - At TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, NHL regular season game: Boston Bruins beats Florida Panthers by score 3-2.
  • 2021 - At crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Los Angeles Kings beats Montreal Canadiens by score 5-2.
  • 2021 - At Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, NHL regular season game: Nashville Predators beats New York Islanders by score 3-2.

Space exploration history:

  • 1967 - USSR Kosmos 186 and 188 make first automatic docking and Venmera 13 launch.
  • 1979 - NASA launches space vehicle S-203.
  • 1980 - NASA launches Flt Satcom-4.
  • 1985 - Space Shuttle Challenger lifts off for mission STS-61-A, its final successful mission.
  • 2018 - NASA's Kepler mission ends after the spacecraft runs out of fuel.

Extreme weather history:

  • 2005 - Hurricane Beta hits the coast of Nicaragua. It is the 13th hurricane of 2005, breaking the 1969 record of 12 hurricanes.

USA history:

  • 1864 - Helena, Montana's capital, is founded.
  • 1893 - US Senate approves repealing Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890.
  • 1893 - The World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois, USA closes. A total of 27 million people visited over four months.
  • 1912 - USS New York is launched.
  • 1938 - Orson Welles broadcasts his radio play of H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, causing a nationwide (USA) panic. About a million radio listeners believe that a real Martian invasion is underway.
  • 1942 - R.E. Griffith opens the Hotel Last Frontier hotel/casino on the Los Angeles Highway, Nevada. This is Las Vegas' first themed resort, with an Old West theme.
  • 1945 - US government announces end of shoe rationing.
  • 1948 - 20 die and 6,000 made ill by smog in Donora, Pennsylvania, USA.
  • 1953 - Dr Albert Schweitzer and General George C Marshall win Nobel Peace Prize.
  • 1954 - Defense Department announces elimination of all segregated regiments.
  • 1972 - Worst US rail accident in 14 years; 45 die in Chicago, Illinois.
  • 1975 - New York Daily News runs headline "Ford to City: Drop Dead".
  • 1988 - Philip Morris buys Kraft Foods for US$13.1 billion.
  • 1988 - Two gambling clubs and one player share US$61.38 million California lotto jackpot.
  • 1992 - Disney releases the film Beauty and the Beast on videocassette. One million copies sell on the first day.
  • 2006 - The Esperanza Fire burns over 61 square miles of Cabazon, California mountain territory.
  • 2008 - The U.S. economy shrank by 0.3 percent in the third quarter (July-September), the most in seven years, with consumer spending during the quarter at the lowest in 28 years.
  • 2008 - The Philadelphia Phillies win the World Series of baseball, their first since 1980, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays four games to one. Game Five was suspended in the sixth inning on October 28 due to rain, with the score tied 2-2.
  • 2009 - The American Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation seizes nine failed banks, including Los Angeles-based California National Bank, the fourth-largest U.S. bank failure this year.

  • 1270 - Eighth and last crusade is launched.
  • 1888 - First ballpoint pen patented.
  • 1938 - Orson Welles panics a nation with broadcast of "War of the Worlds".
  • 2008 - Japan, the world's second biggest economy, unveils a 5 trillion yen (US$51 billion) package of spending measures to support its economy.
  • 2008 - The Philadelphia Phillies win the World Series of baseball, their first since 1980, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays four games to one.
  • 2008 - Eleven bomb blasts rip through the main city of India's Assam state and three other towns, killing 77 people and wounding 320.
