Since 1995, I have been collecting information on a variety of topics, creating several timelines of history. Personal computer history:

  • 1984 - Jack Tramiel decides to resign from Commodore International.
  • 2000 - Microsoft settles its four-year legal battle with Caldera. Terms of the settlement are not made public.
  • 2002 - Royal Consumer Information Products announces the Royal Lin@x handheld computer. It features 206 MHz Intel StrongARM processor, Linux operating system, color screen, CompactFlash Type II slot, MP3 player, serial port, USB port. Price is to be US$299 when available in the US by mid-year.
  • 2005 - In San Francisco, California, the Macworld Conference and Expo trade show is held, over five days.
  • 2006 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the Athlon 64 FX-60 processor. Price is US$999 in 1000-unit quantities.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1927 - Film Booking Offices releases the Alice Comedy film Alice the Golf Bug to theaters.
  • 1932 - The first "Mickey Mouse" color comic page is published in Sunday editions of newspapers. The page is written, drawn, and inked by Earl Duvall.
  • 1932 - The first "Silly Symphonies" color comic page is published in Sunday editions of newspapers. The edition is titled "Bucky Bug", drawn by Earl Duvall.
  • 1941 - The Donald Duck film Timber is released to theaters.
  • 1965 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Ida the Offbeat Eagle.
  • 1971 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled Three Without Fear: In the Land of the Desert Whales.
  • 1988 - The Disney Channel debuts the animated TV show The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
  • 1992 - Disney releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film The Hand That Rocks the Cradle to theatres.
  • 1997 - Buena Vista Pictures generally releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Evita to theaters in the US. The film cost US$65 million to produce.
  • 2000 - Following the merger of America Online and Time Warner, Disney tells Time Warner it wants to renegotiate its cable network distribution deal for ABC, Disney Channel, ESPN, etc. Time Warner asks for an eight month extension of the existing agreement, or it will cease transmitting ABC at the end of April.
  • 2000 - Buena Vista Television premieres The Ainsley Harriott Show.
  • 2005 - Disney Mobile launches in the US a group of ring tones featuring voices of cartoon characters from Disney and Pixar animators, for US$2.50 per tone. Also available are muical ring tones from Disney films, and mobile screensavers.
  • 2010 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. A person's long last name ends with "Mulan Pocahontas", names of two Disney films.
  • 2016 - The musical show Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular closes at the Hyperion Theater in Disney California Adventure, after nearly 14,000 performances.
  • 2016 - The Big Thunder Ranch area at Disneyland closes.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1953 - GM Styling photo taken of Chevrolet Corvette Motorama show car, showing name "Cougar" in chrome script between the front wheel and driver's door.
  • 1999 - At the Daytona International Speedway, in Daytona, Florida, the Corvette Racing group tests its two Corvette C5-R race cars. They place 1st and 3rd in GT2 class.
  • 1999 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A 1956-57 Corvette appears for a raffle in a Las Vegas casino.
  • 2004 - At the Detroit Opera House in Michigan, General Motors unveils the next-generation "C6" 2005 Corvette. It features 400-hp engine, fixed headlights, and targa top.
  • 2005 - In Braselton, Georgia, General Motors unveils the completed Corvette C6-R race car. Two such cars will be raced in the GT1 class of the American Le Mans Series, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - Adolf Hitler decides to implement invasion plans on the West on January 17.
  • 1940 - (1130 hours) In Mechelen-sur-Meuse, Belgium, a small German transport crash-lands. Two officers (Major Erich Hoenmanns and Major Helmuth Reinberger) of a German airborne division carry with them a large part of the operations plan for the attack on the West. King Léopold chooses to ignore the matter, hoping the Germans will change plans and attack France.
  • 1941 - Graf von Schulenburg of the German Government and V. Molotov of the USSR sign a secret protocol transferring a small piece of Lithuanian territory to the USSR for 31.5 million reichmarks (US$7.5 million).
  • 1941 - In the Mediterranean, German planes make a dive bombing attack on the British carrier Illustrious causing major damage. The carrier slowly makes its way to Malta.
  • 1942 - Japanese submarine I-6 torpedoes US aircraft carrier Saratoga 500 miles south west of Oahu.
  • 1942 - Planes from the US carrier Enterprise sink Japanese submarine I-70, 200 miles north-east of Oahu.
  • 1942 - General Sir Archibald Wavell arrives in Java; Allies (American, British, Dutch, Australian) set up combined command in the Pacific.
  • 1943 - The Soviet Red Army breaks into Stalingrad.
  • 1944 - Bernard Montgomery suggests to Dwight Eisenhower to cancel plans for Operation Anvil, the simultaneous landing on south France, to free up resources for the North-West Europe invasion.
  • 1948 - The USSR issues four postage stamps marking the 5th anniversary of liberation of Leningrad from German blockade.

Video game history:

  • 2002 - Sega releases the Rez video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2005 - Nintendo releases The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap video game for the Game Boy Advance in the US.
  • 2006 - Capcom releases the Mega Man X Collection video game for the PlayStation 2 and GameCube in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1810 - Sweden signs peace with France, regaining Pomerania, at a cost of breaking all trade with England except for salt imports.
  • 1975 - Swedish parliament opens its 75th session. Under the new constitution, the King is a figurehead with no real powers.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 2006 - The A & W Concentrate Company is granted a registered trademark of image of a barrel and text "Barrel Aged, Bold Taste!".

USA coin history:

  • 1816 - 47,150 half dollars dated 1815 with the "5" punched over a "2" are delivered from the Mint to the coining department. These are the only 1815-dated half dollars produced.
  • 1913 - Mint Director George Roberts reports that no Liberty Head 5-cent coins will be struck in 1913.
  • 1917 - Mint Director F.J.H. von Engelken writes to the three mint superintendents informing them to hold all new quarters until further notice.
  • 2005 - American Numismatic Rarities auction. US 1866 dollar, Seated Liberty, No Motto, Proof 63: US$1,207,500.
  • 2007 - Reprsentative Eleanor Holmes Norton of the District of Columbia introduces legislation in the House of Representatives seeking a continuation of the 50 State quarter dollars program with an additional six coins for the district and territories.
  • 2013 - At the Florida United Numismatists convention in Orlando, Florida, Heritage Auctions conducts their Platinum Night auction. Some highlights:
    • US 1792 half disme, MS-64: $528,750;
    • US 1803 dollar, PR-66 PCGS: $851,875;
    • US 1838-O half dollar, PR-64 PCGS, one of nine known: $734,375;
    • US 1880 $4, Flowing Hair, PR-66 NGC: $440,625;
    • US 1792 half disme, SP-67 PCGS: $1.41 million.

Sports history:

  • 1911 - Trumper scores double cricket ton versus South Africa, goes on to get 214.
  • 1914 - Oscar Mathisen skates world record 500 minutes in 43.7 seconds in Oslo, Norway.
  • 1920 - Montreal Canadiens (14) and Toronto Saint Patricks (7) score NHL record 21 goals.
  • 1930 - Commencement of New Zealand's first Test, versus England at Christchurch.
  • 1930 - Maurice Allom takes cricket Test hat-trick England versus New Zealand at Christchurch.
  • 1931 - Philadelphia Quakers defeat Montreal Canadiens, ends NHL-record 15-game losing streak.
  • 1939 - Donald Bradman hits 186 South Africa versus Queensland before Christ catches him at short-leg.
  • 1945 - Baseball writers again fail to elect a new Hall of Famer.
  • 1953 - NFL Pro Bowl: National Conference beats American Conference 27-7.
  • 1957 - Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick rules Bing Crosby can keep token stock in the Detroit Tigers, even though he owns part of Pittsburgh Pirates.
  • 1965 - NFL Pro Bowl: West beats East 34-14.
  • 1972 - Los Angeles Lakers' 33 straight win streak snapped, losing to Milwaukee Bucks 120-104.
  • 1977 - 20th hat trick in New York Islanders' history - Bobby Nystrom.
  • 1980 - Jim Stewart, Boston Bruins' rookie goalie allows three goals in his first four minutes and a total of five in first period; he never again plays in the NHL.
  • 1982 - Petra Schneider swims world record 1500 metre freestyle (15:43.31).
  • 1982 - Cincinnati Bengals beat San Diego Chargers in -59 degrees F (-51 degrees C) to win AFC championship.
  • 1983 - New York Supreme Court issues a preliminary injunction barring New York Yankees from playing season-opening series against Detroit Tigers in Denver, Colorado.
  • 1984 - Luis Aparicio, Harmon Killebrew, and D Drysdale elected to Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • 1990 - NCAA approves random drug testing for college football players.
  • 1996 - Jimmy Johnson announced as new coach of Miami Dolphins.
  • 2006 - Bruce Sutter becomes just the fourth relief pitcher to get into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • 2022 - At crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Los Angeles Kings beats New York Rangers by score 3-1.
  • 2022 - At Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado, USA, NHL regular season game: Colorado Avalanche beats Seattle Kraken by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., USA, NHL regular season game: Boston Bruins beats Washington Capitals by score 7-3.

Space exploration history:

  • 1946 - US Army establishes first radar contact with Moon, from Belmar, New Jersey.
  • 1969 - USSR's Venera 6 launched for parachute landing on Venus.
  • 1978 - Soyuz 27 carries two cosmonauts to Salyut 6 space station.
  • 1997 - First comet of 1997 discovered: Comet 1997 A1.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1982 - The lowest ever United Kingdom temperature of -27.2 degrees C (-17 F) is recorded at Braemar, in Aberdeenshire, equaling the record set in the same place in 1895.

USA history:

  • 1811 - Louisiana slaves rebel in two parishes.
  • 1861 - Florida becomes third state to secede from USA.
  • 1861 - Fort Jackson and Fort Philip are taken over by Los Angeles state troops.
  • 1861 - US forts and property seized by Mississippi.
  • 1862 - Battle of Big Sandy River, Kentucky (Middle Creek).
  • 1862 - Battle of Romney, West Virginia.
  • 1863 - General McClernand's US troops surround Fort Hindman, Arkansas.
  • 1870 - Georgia (US) legislature reconvenes.
  • 1870 - John D Rockefeller incorporates Standard Oil.
  • 1870 - US Secretary of the Navy George Robeson directs Commander Thomas O. Selfridge to make a survey of the Isthmus of Darien, Nicaragua, to determine best location for canal from Atlantic to Pacific oceans.
  • 1878 - US Senate proposes female suffrage.
  • 1888 - Louis Aimé Augustin Le Prince is granted a US patent for an "Apparatus for producing animated pictures".
  • 1901 - A drilling derrick at Spindletop Hill near Beaumont, Texas, produces a gusher of crude oil from at a depth of over 1,000 feet.
  • 1910 - First international air meet in US held, in Los Angeles, California.
  • 1911 - First photo in US taken from an airplane, in San Diego, California.
  • 1911 - Honduras signs treaty turning over customs to US (not ratified).
  • 1912 - World's first flying boat's maiden flight (Glenn Curtiss in New York).
  • 1923 - Last US troops leave Rhineland (Germany).
