Personal computer history:

  • 1997 - US District Judge Thomas Jackson issues a preliminary injunction against Microsoft, requiring Microsoft allow Windows 95 licensees the option of not including Internet Explorer. The request for imposition of a US$1 million per day fine is turned down.
  • 1998 - Warner Bros. Pictures releases the film You've Got Mail to theaters in the USA. The film title is the phrase used by the America Online software, which is shown and used in the film. The icon for Microsoft Word appears on a computer desktop. An Apple Powerbook and an IBM laptop computer are used throughout the film.
  • 2000 - Gabon issues a postage stamp depicting a sledgehammer about to strike a personal computer, to eradicate the Y2K bug.
  • 2004 - File downloads of the Firefox Web browser reach ten million.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1925 - Disney completes the 27th Alice Comedy film, Alice's Balloon Race.
  • 1925 - Bard's Glendale Theater in Los Angeles previews the Alice Comedy film Alice's Balloon Race.
  • 1957 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, entitled The Horse of the West.
  • 1959 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring the eighth "Tales of Texas John Slaughter" episode, Wild Horse Revenge.
  • 1960 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring the second "Daniel Boone" episode, And Chase the Buffalo.
  • 1963 - Buena Vista pre-releases Disney's live-action feature film The Three Lives of Thomasina to selected theaters in New York.
  • 1966 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Joker, the Amiable Ocelot.
  • 1970 - Disney premieres the animated feature film The Aristocats in Los Angeles, California.
  • 1976 - The NBC TV network airs NBC All-Disney Saturday Night at the Movies featuring Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N. and Nature's Half Acre.
  • 1982 - The CBS TV network airs the Walt Disney show, entitled Winnie the Pooh and Friends.
  • 1988 - The NBC TV network airs the special Disneyland's All-Star Comedy Circus.
  • 1990 - Maldives issues ten postage stamps depicting Disney characters in Aesop's Fables.
  • 1992 - Disney releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film The Muppet Christmas Carol to theaters. The film was produced by Jim Henson Productions.
  • 1996 - Michael Eisner hands Michael Ovitz the press release announcing Ovitz' resignation as president.
  • 1998 - Buena Vista releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film The Parent Trap to theaters in Great Britain.
  • 1998 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Rushmore to theaters in the US.
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. Someone says "... to the voice of Buzz Lightyear, Tim Allen".
  • 2009 - Disney releases the animated feature film The Princess and the Frog to theaters in the US.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Finnish forces counterattack Soviet forces at Suomussalmi.
  • 1940 - Near Sidi Barrani, Egypt, a reserve brigade of British 7th Armored Division captures 14,000 retreating Italian troops.
  • 1941 - (0300 hours) The Japanese Imperial Fourth Fleet arrives near the Wake atoll.
  • 1941 - (0500 hours) Japanese ships begin a bombardment of Wake Island.
  • 1941 - (0610 hours) As Japanese ships off Wake Island prepare to launch a second bombardment, guns on Wake open fire and planes take off to attack the ships.
  • 1941 - (0800 hours) After two hours of attacks on Japanese ships off Wake Island, the destroyers Hayak and Kisaragi are sunk, eight other ships are damaged, and 500-700 troops are killed. Two US planes are wrecked.
  • 1941 - (1200 hours) 30 Japanese bombers make a fourth run over Wake Island. Four are shot down, four others leave trailing smoke.
  • 1941 - (Hong Kong time) The "D" Company of the Winnipeg Grenadiers engages the Japanese in the Hong Kong New Territories, the first Canadians to fight in the war on Japan.
  • 1941 - Lieutenant Boyd "Buzz" Wagner, flying a P-40 from Clark Field on Luzon, in the Philippines, shoots down four Zero fighters and destroys five more planes on the ground at the Japanese landing site.
  • 1941 - A peace treaty is signed between Japan and Siam. Japan grants to Siam former Siamese territories in Laos, part of northern Malaya, and part of Burma. The Japanese 15th Army crosses Siam into Burma.
  • 1941 - Germany, Italy, and Japan sign an agreement on joint prosecution of the war. Each promises to pursue the war against Great Britain and the United States, and to make peace only by mutual agreement.
  • 1941 - In the Reichstag in Germany, Adolf Hitler announces his declaration of war on the United States.
  • 1941 - Italy declares war on the United States.
  • 1941 - The U.S. Congress declares war on Germany and Italy.
  • 1941 - (about 1600 hours) A US plane patrolling near Wake Island sees a Japanese submarine, and bombs and sinks it.
  • 1941 - (evening) Japanese forces capture Laoag airfield.
  • 1943 - Louis Mountbatten establishes the Eastern Bomber Command in south-east Asia.
  • 1944 - British Bomber Command makes an air raid by Mosquito aircraft against Duiburg, Germany.
  • 1944 - British Bomber Command makes an air raid against Osterfeld, Germany.

Video game history:

  • 1992 - Naxat releases the Nexzr video game for the PC Engine in Japan.
  • 1998 - Warner Bros. Pictures releases the Jack Frost film to theaters in the USA. A character says he has packed "batteries for the Game Boy".
  • 2001 - Sony CEA releases the Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. Someone says "... played a lot of Tetris".
  • 2006 - Nintendo releases The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess video game for the GameCube in the US.
  • 2008 - Sony opens its social networking site PlayStation Home for open beta testing.
  • 2012 - Nintendo releases the Paper Mario: Sticker Star video game for the Nintendo 3DS in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1915 - The steamship Stockholm of the Swedish America Line leaves Göteborg on its maiden voyage to America with 202 passengers.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1967 - The Finance Minister announces that the 50c and $1 coins minted in nickel will be of a smaller size, making the nickel coins easier to strike.
  • 1973 - André Ouellet launches the Canadian Olympic Coin Program.

USA coin history:

  • 1936 - Distribution of Columbia, South Carolina, Sesquicentennial commemorative half dollars begins.
  • 1973 - TV show Hawaii Five-O airs, entitled "The $100,000 Nickel", with appearance of the Olsen specimen of the US 1913 Liberty Head 5-cent coin.

Sports history:

  • 1866 - First yacht race across the Atlantic Ocean.
  • 1909 - Canadian Football exhibition game played in Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, Hamilton Tigers beat Ottawa Rough Riders, 11-6 before crowd of 15,000.
  • 1926 - Queensland win their first Sheffield Shield cricket match, versus New South Wales.
  • 1928 - Major League Baseball National League President John Heydler proposes designated hitter for pitchers.
  • 1934 - 1935 All-Star Game is assigned to Cleveland, Ohio.
  • 1934 - First Toronto Maple Leafs' penalty shot, Conacher unsuccessful versus New York Rangers.
  • 1934 - Ford C Frick becomes president of American baseball's National League.
  • 1934 - National League votes to permit night baseball (up to 7 games per home team).
  • 1937 - 25th Canadian Football League Grey Cup: Toronto Argonauts defeats Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 30-7.

  • 1975 - Great New York Yankees trade getting Willie Randolph, Dock Ellis and Ken Brett from Pittsburgh Pirates for George "Doc" Medich.
  • 1979 - Geoff Boycott scores cricket century in a limited-over international.
  • 1980 - Dirk Wellham scores 100 on first-class debut, New South Wales versus Victoria.
  • 1981 - Muhammad Ali's 61st and last fight, losing to Trevor Berbick.
  • 1981 - Washington Capitals' biggest margin of victory (9) beating Toronto Maple Leafs 11-2.
