Personal computer history:

  • 1999 - Microsoft stock market value peaks at US$600 million.
  • 2005 - Intel releases the Pentium 4 processor, models 631 (3 GHz), 641 (3.2 GHz), 651 (3.4 GHz), and 661 (3.6 GHz). Each features 2 MB cache, 800 MHz front-side bus, and 65 nanometer traces. Prices are US$178, US$218, US$273, US$401, respectively, in 1000-unit quantities.
  • 2005 - Intel releases the Pentium D dual-core processor, models 920 (2.8 GHz), 930 (3 GHz), 940 (3.2 GHz), and 950 (3.4 GHz). Each features 2 MB cache, 800 MHz front-side bus, and 65 nanometer traces. Prices are US$241, US$316, US$423, US$637, respectively, in 1000-unit quantities.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1926 - Film Booking Offices releases the Alice Comedy film Alice the Lumber Jack to theaters.
  • 1930 - The Silly Symphony film Playful Pan is released to theaters.
  • 1937 - Time magazine features Walt Disney on the cover, for an article on the film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
  • 1940 - The Pluto film Pantry Pirate is released to theaters.
  • 1954 - Time magazine features Walt Disney and his animated characters on its cover.
  • 1990 - Tanzania issues 29 postage stamps depicting various Disney characters.
  • 1991 - The CBS TV network airs the last episode of The Carol Burnett Show.
  • 1996 - Michael Ovitz leaves the Disney company.
  • 1999 - The film Fantasia/2000 is shown at Orchard Hall, in Tokyo, Japan.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - The Finnish 9th Division launches several attacks against remains of the Soviet 163rd Division.
  • 1939 - Finns are victorious at Suomosalmi, scattering the Russian 163rd Division.
  • 1941 - British and Norwegian commandos make a heavy raid on Vågö Island, Norway. They destroy a coast defence battery and 16,000 tons of shipping, returning to England with 70 more volunteers, but losing Captain Martin Linge.
  • 1941 - Japanese forces bomb Manila, Philippines.
  • 1941 - Manila is evacuated.
  • 1941 - Australian Prime Minister John Curtin issues a New Year message, looking to America for defense aid, "without any inhibitions of any kind", "free of any pangs as to our traditional links or kinship with the United Kingdom". He calls for Russia to enter the war against Japan, and for the USA and Australia to have the most say in the Pacific war.
  • 1942 - Soviet armies launch a major assault on German 57th Panzer Corps, forcing it to withdraw to Kotelnikovo.
  • 1942 - While escorting westbound convoy ONS-154 in the North Atlantic, Royal Canadian Navy destroyer St. Laurent and corvettes Chilliwack, Battleford, and Napanee sink German submarine U-356. Over a four-day battle with twenty submarines, 14 of 45 ships are lost.
  • 1943 - German forces retreat from Ortona, Italy, as Canadian forces complete taking the town.
  • 1943 - Adolf Hitler orders troops to concentrate on the Cotentin peninsula in Normandy, expecting the main Allied attack in mid-February.
  • 1943 - Canadian General Andrew McNaughton is removed from command of the 1st Canadian Army in Europe.
  • 1944 - Soviet forces complete encircling Budapest, Hungary.
  • 1944 - British Bomber Command makes an air raid against Rheydt, Germany.
  • 1944 - In the North Atlantic, Canadian corvette St. Thomas sinks German submarine U-877.
  • 1945 - In Canada, a lawyer on behalf of Japanese Canadians convinces the Minister of Justice to halt the deportation of 900 Japanese Canadians. The matter is referred to the Supreme Court of Canada.
  • 1995 - Philippines issues thirty postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • 2005 - Niue issues twelve postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Video game history:

  • 2010 - Sega shuts down servers for Japanese version of Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst video game.

Swedish history:

  • 1655 - Swedes abandon the siege of Jasna Gora monastery in Poland.
  • 1991 - Near Arlanda in Sweden, SAS flight SK751 crashes and breaks into three pieces. Miraculously, there is no explosion, no fire, and no fatalities among the 129 aboard.

USA coin history:

  • 1904 - US President Theodore Roosevelt writes a short letter to Treasury Secretary Leslie Mortier Shaw, commenting that the nation's coinage is "artistically of atrocious hideousness", and asking if sculptors could be employed to provide more beautiful designs.
  • 1915 - The US Mint invites sculptors Hermon MacNeil, Adolph Weinman, and Albin Polasek to submit new designs for the dime, quarter dollar, and half dollar.
  • 1999 - California coin dealer Sarkis Lukes sells a 1943 copper Lincoln cent graded MS-61 red and brown by PCGS for US$112,000.

Sports history:

  • 1874 - At Palmar de Junco, a Havanan team plays Matanzas in the first documented baseball game played in Cuba. The game is called after seven innings due to darkness with Havana leading, 51-9.
  • 1897 - Stanley Cup of hockey: Montréal Victorias beat Ottawa Capitals, 15-2.
  • 1905 - Cricketer M A Noble scores 281 (369 minutes, 21 fours) New South Wales versus Victoria.
  • 1937 - Donald Bradman scores 246 South Africa versus Queensland, 364 minutes, 20 fours.
  • 1937 - German immigration officials, with no explanation, bar Juan Carlos Zabala of Argentina, 1932 Olympic marathon champion, from entering Germany.
  • 1942 - NFL Pro Bowl: NFL All-Stars beats Washington 17-14.
  • 1951 - 40th Davis Cup: Australia beats USA in Sydney (3-2).
  • 1953 - Detroit Lions beat Cleveland Browns 17-16 in NFL championship game.
  • 1956 - 45th Davis Cup: Australia beats USA in Adelaide (5-0).
  • 1956 - Bill Sharman (Boston) ends NBA free throw streak of 55 games.
  • 1959 - Baltimore Colts beat New York Giants 31-16 in NFL championship game.
  • 1962 - 28th Heisman Trophy Award: Terry Baker, Oregon State (quarterback).
  • 1964 - Cleveland Browns beat Baltimore Colts 27-0 in NFL championship game.
  • 1974 - 40th Heisman Trophy Award: Archie Griffin, Ohio State (Running Back).
  • 1979 - Red Army beats New York Rangers 5-2 at Madison Square Garden.
  • 1981 - Edmonton Oilers' Wayne Gretzky becomes fastest NHL player to get 100 points (38th game).
  • 1981 - Lillee becomes the leading wicket-taker in Test Crickets with 310.
  • 1982 - Imran Khan 8-60 to bring innings victory versus India at Karachi.
  • 1984 - San Diego Padres' free agent pitcher Ed Whitson signs with New York Yankees.
  • 1987 - Steve Largent sets all-time NFL record for career catches when he catches his 752nd pass.
  • 1989 - Oregon begins taking bids on NBA games.
  • 1991 - Cincinnati Bengals hire Dave Shula as youngest NFL coach (32).
  • 1991 - Chuck Knox retires as Seattle Seahawks coach.
  • 1992 - Nancy Sheehan wins LPGA Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge Golf Tournament.
  • 1995 - Boon completes his 21st Test Cricket century (110 versus SL, Melbourne Cricket Ground).
  • 1996 - Carquest Bowl 7: Miami beats Virginia, 31-21.
  • 2006 - The San Francisco Giants reach a preliminary agreement with pitcher Barry Zito on the largest deal ever given to a pitcher in the history of the game: US$126 million for seven years.

Space exploration history:

  • 1968 - Apollo 8 returns to Earth.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1997 - 54-car pileup on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay, Florida, USA, due to dense fog. One death, 30 injuries.
  • 2001 - Typhoon Vamei forms within 1.5 degrees of the equator. No other tropical cyclone in recorded history has come as close to the equator.

USA history:

  • 1845 - Ether first used in childbirth in US, in Jefferson, Georgia.
  • 1862 - Battle of Chickasaw Bluffs, Mississippi, CSA (Chickasaw Bayou).
  • 1862 - Battle of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, USA.
  • 1892 - Foundation stone of the Cathedral of Saint John is laid (New York City, New York).
  • 1906 - First annual meeting of American Sociological Society, in Providence, Rhode Island.
  • 1932 - Radio City Music Hall theater opens in New York City, New York.
  • 1934 - First youth hostel in US opens (Northfield, Massachusetts).
  • 1939 - First American ski-mobiles (North Conway, New Hampshire).
  • 1968 - Apollo 8 returns to Earth.
  • 1970 - Hello, Dolly! closes at Saint James Theater in New York City after 2,844 performances.
  • 1983 - A propane explosion in Buffalo, New York kills five firefighters and two civilians, and devastates 16 square blocks.

  • 1825 - First public railroad using steam locomotive completed in England.
  • 1934 - Shah of Persia declares Persia now Iran.
  • 1939 - 8.0 Earthquake in Erzincam, Turkey, about 50,000 die.
  • 1945 - International Monetary Fund established - World Bank founded.
  • 1979 - Soviet troops invade Afghánistán, President Hafizullah Amin overthrown.
  • 1981 - Edmonton Oiler Wayne Gretzky becomes fastest NHLer to get 100 points (38th game).
  • 2007 - At an election rally in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, former President Benazir Bhutto, leader of opposition Pakistan People's Party, is assassinated. At least 20 others are killed by a bomb blast. Ensuing violence leaves about 60 dead.
  • 2007 - Presidential and parliamentary elections take place in Kenya. Mwai Kibaki re-elected President. Accusations of wide-spread rigging on both sides leads to hundreds of deaths.
  • 2008 - Israel launches air strikes on dozens of Hamas security compounds in the Gaza Strip, killing 230, wounding over 400. The strikes were in response to over 300 rocket attacks in a week. Militants in Gaza respond by sending at least 180 rockets and mortar shells into Israeli border communities.
