Personal computer history:

  • 1976 - IMS Associates fires 17 employees, nearly half of its workforce.
  • 1984 - At the Flint Center of DeAnza College in Cupertino, California, Apple Computer holds its annual stockholders meeting. The 1984 TV advertisement is shown, then Steve Jobs introduces the Apple Macintosh. It features a 7.83-MHz 32-bit Motorola 68000 CPU, built-in 9-inch monochrome screen, 512x342 graphics, 400 kB 3.5-inch Sony 400-kB floppy disk drive, mouse, 128 kB RAM. Weight is 20 pounds; size is 9.7 by 10.9 inches on base and 13.5 inches high; price: US$1995-2495. Original code-name was McIntosh. The 216 kB System 1 operating system was derived from LisaDesk. MacWrite and MacPaint software are included free for a limited time.
  • 1984 - Apple Computer introduces its 300-baud modem for US$300, and 1200-baud modem for US$500.
  • 1984 - Apple Computer releases the Apple ImageWriter printer for US$595. It is a modified C.Itoh printer.
  • 1984 - At the Apple Computer stockholder meeting, Apple releases a new version of the Lisa computer, the Lisa 2. It can use the Macintosh operating system, or an update of the Lisa operating system. It comes with 512 kB RAM, mouse, keyboard, built-in 12-inch monitor, and one 3.5-inch 400 kB floppy drive, for US$3495. The Lisa 2/5 includes a 5 MB hard drive, for US$4495. The Lisa 2/10 includes a 10 MB hard drive, for US$5495.
  • 1985 - Apple Computer settles a trademark-infringement lawsuit with Management and Computer Services over the use of the word "Mac" in Macintosh computer-related products. Apple agrees to pay an undisclosed sum.
  • 1995 - Macromedia completes its acquisition of Altsys, maker of Freehand.
  • 2000 - Sun Microsystems launches the Solaris 8 operating system.
  • 2000 - Compaq Computer, Hewlett-Packard, Dell Computer, IBM, Gateway, and other companies begin selling computers running Windows 2000 operating system.
  • 2001 - Cinévia Films releases the film Garrison's Flowers to theaters in France. The film is set in 1991, but a computer store window shows an advertisement for Windows 2000.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1927 - Film Booking Offices releases the Alice Comedy film Alice Foils the Pirates to theaters.
  • 1930 - Ub Iwerks again talks to Roy Disney, explaining his departure, for an offer by Pat Powers' company to start his own film studio. Roy reduces his buyout offer to $2920, payable in one year. Iwerks accepts.
  • 1930 - Disney signs a contract with King Features for the Mickey Mouse comic strip.
  • 1941 - The Pluto film Pluto's Playmate is released to theaters.
  • 1964 - The Disney-produced TV show The Restless Sea airs. The show was prepared for the Bell System Science Series.
  • 1965 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring Gallegher, part one.
  • 1986 - The NBC TV network airs Disney's Living Seas.
  • 1987 - The Disney TV movie Double Switch airs.
  • 1988 - The ABC TV network airs The Disney Sunday Movie, entitled Earth*Star Voyager, part two.
  • 1992 - Disney premieres the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Blame it on the Bellboy in London, England.
  • 1993 - The Mickey's Toontown area opens at Disneyland. It includes

  • 1994 - The NBC TV network airs the two-hour movie To My Daughter, with Love.
  • 1995 - St. Vincent issues eleven postage stamps depicting scenes from The Three Little Pigs.
  • 1995 - The ice skating show Walt Disney's World on Ice opens in New York, running for 22 days.
  • 1997 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Prefontaine to theaters in the US.
  • 1999 - The Walt Disney World Speedway hosts the Indy 200 car race.
  • 2000 - The WB Network premieres the Brutally Normal TV show.
  • 2000 - Disney announces the appointment of Robert Iger as new president and chief operating officer of Disney.
  • 2003 - Walt Disney Home Entertainment releases the film Air Bud Spikes Back on videocassette in the USA.
  • 2006 - The Walt Disney Company agrees to pay US$7.4 billion to acquire Pixar Animation Studios.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 2009 - At Mecum's auction in Kissimmee, Florida, a 1963 Corvette Z06 Sting Ray Gulf Oil race car sells for US$1,050,000.
  • 2009 - (to January 25) At the Daytona International Raceway in Daytona Beach, Florida, the 47th Rolex 24 at Daytona race is held, round one of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series.
    • Finishing 12th in GT class and 22nd overall is Gue/Long/Eversley/Beiker in the #97 Stevenson Motorsports Corvette.

World War II history:

  • 1942 - (0300-0630 hours) Japanese land at Balikpapan, Borneo; the garrison withdraws.
  • 1942 - (Sunrise) Japanese land at Kendari, Celebes, and quickly capture the airport.
  • 1942 - Japanese troops land at Kendari.
  • 1942 - Japanese aircraft of carriers Soryu and Hiryu attack Ambon.
  • 1943 - Both airports at Stalingrad fall to Soviet forces.
  • 1943 - The Casablanca Conference ends. The British persuaded the Americans to postpone the cross-Channel invasion. US President Franklin Roosevelt announces to the press the Allied policy of requiring the unconditional surrender of Germany, Italy, and Japan.
  • 1944 - Adolf Hitler orders the Gustav Line in Italy to be held at all costs.
  • 1945 - Soviet armored units reach the Oder River south of Breslau.
  • 1946 - The Supreme Court of Canada hears the case of the government's policy of deporting Japanese Canadians.
  • 1947 - In Canada, Prime Minister William King repeals the Japanese repatriation orders-in-council. Japanese Canadians in Canada would no longer be subject to deportation.
  • 1996 - Nicaragua issues nine postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the end of the war.
  • 2006 - Togo issues six postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of V-E Day.

Video game history:

  • 1992 - Hudson releases the Ninja Gaiden video game for the PC Engine in Japan.
  • 1994 - Sega releases the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 video game for the Genesis in the US.
  • 2000 - Nintendo releases the Mario Party 2 video game for the Nintendo 64 in the US.
  • 2001 - Cinévia Films releases the film Garrison's Flowers to theaters in France. The film is set in 1991, but a Sony PlayStation (released in 1995) is shown in a home.
  • 2017 - Capcom releases the Resident Evil 7 Biohazard video game for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the USA.
  • 2017 - Sega releases the Yakuza 0 video game for the PlayStation 4 in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1617 - The Estates meet in the Hall of State in Örebro. An ordinance regulates how the four Estates work and make decisions with king.
  • 1967 - Birth of Åsa Maria Sandell, Swedish journalist and professional super middleweight boxer.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1973 - A group of coin dealers meet to discuss creating a Canadian coin dealers association to police its members.

USA coin history:

  • 1923 - President Warren Harding signs into law a bill authorizing production of Monroe Doctrine Centennial half dollars.
  • 1980 - (to January 25) Bowers and Ruddy Galleries conducts the coin auction at the Numismatic Association of Southern California Convention. Some highlights:
    • 1879 $4 Stella gold pattern: US$31,000;
    • 1907 $20 gold, Saint Gaudens, High Relief: $28,000.

  • 2011 - The US Mint releases the 2011 Gettysburg National Memorial Park quarter dollar to circulation.
