- 1993 - The second annual PenExpo Conference and Exhibition is held at the San Francisco Hyatt in California.
- 1999 - Intel announces the new mobile Pentium II processors, with integrated 256 kB L2 cache. Code-name during development was Dixon. Speeds are 300, 333, and 366 MHz.
- 1999 - Intel announces the 266 to 300 MHz mobile Celeron processors for notebook computers, with integrated Level 2 cache.
- 1999 - Linus Torvalds releases the Linux 2.2 operating system kernel. Some new or updated features include better support for multiple processors and hard disks, and easier firewall setup.
- 2000 - U.S. District Judge Ronald Whyte reinstates some restrictions on how Microsoft can use Sun Microsystems' Java technology in its products. Microsoft can not distribute products that are not compatible with Sun's Java license, but does not have to recall any existing non-complying products.
- 2001 - Michael Cowpland resigns from the Corel board of directors.
- 2003 - The Slammer worm (also called Sapphire or SQL Hell) begins spreading across the Internet, exploiting a flaw in Microsoft SQL Server 2000, infecting personal computers around the world. Within ten minutes, the worm has reached 90 percent of the Internet, infecting over 75,000 machines. Within another thirty minutes, one-fifth of Internet data packets are infected.
- 2004 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A personal computer appears, with dual floppy drives, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and printer.
- 1928 - Disney completes the 19th Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film, Ozzie of the Mounted, and ships it to Winkler Productions.
- 1938 - A group of Disney animators hold a general meeting in Hollywood, calling their group the Cartoonists Federation, and electing Art Babbitt as president.
- 1961 - Buena Vista premieres Disney's animated feature film One Hundred and One Dalmatians in selected theaters. It cost US$4 million to make. The film is based on the book The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. In one scene, a portion of Disney's film Flowers and Trees is shown on a television.
- 1986 - Circus Fantasy first appears in Disneyland.
- 1990 - Coca-Cola and Disney sign a 15-year marketing agreement. Coca-Cola products will be used exclusively in all theme parks, and Coca-Cola will use certain Disney characters in its advertising.
- 1997 - The ABC TV network airs the two-hour movie Beverly Hills Family Robinson.
- 2002 - Buena Vista releases the Touchstone Pictures film The Count of Monte Cristo to theaters in the USA.
- 2003 - The Cinderellabration show opens at Tokyo Disney Resort.
- 2011 - The ABC Studios TV series Body of Proof world premieres in Italy.
- 1953 - The General Motors Motorama in New York closes.

- 1946 - In Yokohama, Japan, a US military commission sentences to death Japanese Captain Kaichi Hirate for atrocities against Allied prisoners.
- 1946 - In Camarines Narte Province, 150 miles south of Manila, the Philippines, 72 resisting Japanese soldiers are killed by a Philippine battalion of US Army's 86th Division. The confrontation followed several efforts to induce their surrender.
- 1984 - The USSR issues five postage stamps depicting World War II tanks.
- 1947 - Dumont engineers Thomas T. Goldsmith Junior and Estle Ray Mann file for a patent on first electronic video game, the Cathode-Ray Tube Amusement Device. Players adjust knobs to direct light beam missiles to hit targets printed on clear overlays.
- 2003 - Capcom releases the Devil May Cry 2 video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US. Price is US$49.99.
- 2005 - Take Two Interactive announces it has acquired Visual Concepts Entertainment and Kush Games for US$24 million.
- 2011 - Electronic Arts releases the Dead Space 2 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.
- 1924 - (to February 4) The 1st Olympic Winter Games are held in Chamonix, France. Sweden wins one gold medal.
- 1983 - A & W Restaurants' "A & W Great Food Restaurant" is registered as a service mark.
- 1990 - The A & W Concentrate Company first uses an image and text "A & W, THERE'S JUST MORE TO IT." as applied to soft drinks.
- 1963 - A Proclamation sets the design of the dollar coin for commemorating the 100th anniversary of the 1864 Charlottetown Conference on Confederation.
- 1978 - Representatives of the Royal Canadian Mint, the Canadian Association of Numismatic Dealers, and the Canadian Numismatic Association meet to discuss a system of delivering Mint products to dealers on a monthly basis based on dealer projections for the year.
- 1849 - Congressman James Iver McKay of North Carolina introduces legislation proposing a gold dollar coin in the House of Representatives.
- 1910 - The Denver Mint begins striking 1910-dated eagles.
- 1971 - The Philadelphia Mint strikes two Eisenhower dollar essays, then destroys them.
- 2001 - The US government settles its legal claims with British coin dealer Stephen Fenton over a 1933 gold double eagle, allowing for the coin to be auctioned and owned privately.
- 2010 - The US Mint officially launches the 2010 Native American dollar coin in Manhattan, New York. Theme of the reverse is "Government - the Great Tree of Peace".

- 2008 - In Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, the Monte Carlo Resort & Casino is evacuated due to a fire which engulfed parts of the upper floors, facade and roof before being brought under control.
