- 1980 - The Industrial Bank of Japan announces it and nearly 30 other Japanese banks have agreed to loan money to the Oriental Land Company to build a US$300 million Disney theme park in Tokyo.
- 1982 - Wally Boag gives his last performance at the Golden Horseshoe Revue at Disneyland. He did the show almost continuously since its opening in 1955, putting him in the Guiness Book of Records for the most number of performances of a show, about 40,000.
- 1988 - Groundbreaking for the Dolphin Hotel and Swan Hotel complex begins in Walt Disney World.
- 1997 - The Gambia issues 16 postage stamps depicting scenes from Disney's Monkey King.
- 1997 - Zambia issues twelve postage stamps for the Year of the Ox, depicting Disney characters: Clarabelle Cow, Minnie Mouse, and Mickey Mouse.
- 2005 - The Walt Disney Pictures / Walden Media film Aliens of the Deep is released to large format / IMAX theaters in the USA.
- 2007 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. A scene in a prison cell is similar to the one in Disney's Aladdin, where an old man helps a younger man escape out of a loose brick in the wall.
- 2006 - At the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, the Rolex 24 at Daytona 24 Hours race is held, round one of the Grand American Rolex Series.

- 1942 - In Malaya, British troops begin a retreat from the mainland.
- 1945 - American troops regain the front lines against the Germans held on December 16. Allied armies suffered about 83,000 casualties, and lost about 800 tanks. Germany lost over 100,000 men, 800 tanks, and 1000 aircraft.
- 1988 - Hideyuki Nakajima of Atari Games/Tengen signs an agreement with Nintendo, to become a licensed producer of game cartridges for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
- 2007 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. A man asks a boy wearing an electronic glove "What's the PowerGlove for?", a reference to the Mattel PowerGlove controller for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
- 2022 - Nintendo releases the Pokémon Legends: Arceus game for the Nintendo Switch.
- 1638 - In Stockholm Castle, French ballet master Antoine de Beaulieu produces the first ballet ever staged in Sweden, "Le Ballet des Plaisirs de la Vie des Enfants sans soucy".
- 1993 - The demilitarized zone between Norway and Sweden is agreed by the two countries to no longer be needed. It was initiated by the 1905 convention, at 15-km wide on both sides of the border.
- 2002 - Astrid Lindgren dies peacefully in her apartment in Stockholm at age 94. About 130 million of her books are in circulation, translated into 86 languages.
- 1987 - A Royal proclamation changes the reverse design of the new dollar coin to a common loon resting on a lake.
- 1791 - Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton delivers Report on the Establishment of the Mint to House of Representatives. Hamilton proposes bimetallic standard of both gold and silver coins, $2.50 to $10 coins being 11 parts gold to 1 part alloy.
