Personal computer history:

  • 1984 - IBM introduces the IBM Portable Personal Computer. It features 4.77 MHz Intel 8088 processor, 256 kB RAM, 9-inch amber monitor, 80x25 text, CGA graphics, 360 kB 5.25-inch drive, DOS 2.1. Price is US$2795. It weighs 30 pounds.
  • 1995 - At the International Solid State Circuits Conference, Intel formally announces details of the design of the P6 processor.
  • 1997 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. In the title scene, an Apple Computer Macintosh-style window makes a parody of the America Online software, calling it America Onlink, with a very slow loading of artwork for the show's family characters.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1955 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, entitled Cavalcade of Songs.
  • 1964 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh, part two.
  • 1969 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring The Secret of Boyne Castle, part two.
  • 1970 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film It's Tough To Be A Bird for an Oscar Award in the category Short Subjects, Cartoons.
  • 1981 - Turks and Caicos Islands issues three postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of Pluto.
  • 1984 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Mickey's Christmas Carol for an Oscar Award in the category Short Film, Animated.
  • 1986 - The ABC TV network airs The Disney Sunday Movie, two films entitled The Last Electric Knight and Two and Onehalf Dads.
  • 1991 - NBC airs the last episode of the Disney TV series The Fanelli Boys.
  • 1991 - The stage show Dick Tracy Starring in Diamond Double-Cross at the Disney-MGM Studios at Walt Disney World gives its last performance.
  • 1993 - Walt Disney Records releases the album For Our Children: The Concert.
  • 1993 - The Disney Channel airs For Our Children: The Concert.
  • 1994 - Disney releases the animated film compilation Winnie the Pooh: Playtime Volume 1 - Detective Tigger / Cowboy Pooh on laserdisc for US$30. It includes The Good, The Bad, and The Tigger, Tigger, Private eye, Rabbit Marks the Spot, The Masked Offender, Sham Pooh, Invasion of the Pooh Snatcher, Eeyore's Tail Tale.
  • 1998 - Micronesia issues ten postage stamps depicting Winnie-the-Pooh characters.
  • 2001 - Disney releases the Walt Disney Pictures animated feature film Recess: School's Out to theaters in the USA.
  • 2003 - The ABC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled Music Man.
  • 2004 - Diane Disney Miller sends a letter to the Disney board of directors, expressing her opposition to the Comcast deal. Miller also notes Michael Eisner's unwillingness to identify a successor, suggesting that he be replaced when his contract ends in 2006.
  • 2004 - The Disney board unanimously rejects the Comcast deal.
  • 2007 - Disney releases the film Bridge to Terabithia to theaters in the USA.
  • 2009 - The Disney Channel premieres the Disney Channel Original Movie Dadnapped.
  • 2011 - The CBS TV network premieres the ABC Studios / CBS Television Studios TV series Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior.
  • 2012 - The Disney Fantasy cruise ship departs Germany for its transatlantic voyage to Port Canaveral, Florida.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1963 - At the Daytona International Raceway in Daytona Florida, the American Challenge Cup race is held. Mickey Thompson enters four 1963 Z06 Corvettes, two with newly developed Mark II big block 427-ci "Mystery Motor" engines.
    • Finishing 2nd is the "Nicky Nouse", a lightened near-stock fuel-injected 1963 Sting Ray, driven by A.J. Foyt.
    • Finishing 3rd is the 1963 427 ci ZO6 driven by Billy Krause. Rex White races the second 1963 427 ci Z06 Corvette but quits on Lap 38; Mickey Thompson continues until the suspension breaks.

  • 1964 - At the Daytona International Speedway, the 2000 KM Daytona Continental race is held.
    • Finishing 12th in GT +2000 class and 21st overall is the Sports Car Service #3 Corvette Sting Ray driven by Conrad Krause and Jack Moore.
    • Finishing 13th in GT +2000 class and 22nd overall is the Nickey Chevrolet #9 Corvette Sting Ray driven by Skip Hudson and Jerry Grant.

  • 1972 - General Motors donates the CERV I and CERV II research cars to the Briggs Cunningham Automotive Museum, in Costa Mesa, California.
  • 2003 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A new model red Corvette convertible appears.

World War II history:

  • 1938 - Austrian Chancellor Kurt von Schuschnigg accepts Adolf Hitler's ultimatum, names Arthur Seyss-Inquart as Minister of the Interior, and other pro-Nazi ministers in control of foreign affairs.
  • 1940 - (2300-2400 hours) In Norwegian territorial waters off Jössing Fjord, British destroyer Cossack pulls alongside and boards the German supply ship Altmark, freeing 303 British prisoners. Two Norwegian torpedo boat captains protest, but do nothing.
  • 1942 - British Bomber Command begins regular use of the Boston aircraft.
  • 1943 - The British Air Ministry instructs Bomber Command to bomb Berlin, Germany, due to Russian successes at Stalingrad.
  • 1944 - (morning) Forces of Admiral Raymond Spruance is Carrier Task Force 58 strike Truk, defeating island's defenders in one day.
  • 1944 - German forces in Italy counterattack the Anzio front.
  • 1944 - A German guided bomb hits SS Elihu Yale, sinking it.
  • 1945 - Soviet forces surround Breslau, Germany.
  • 1945 - North of Scotland, Canadian frigate St. John sinks German submarine U-309.
  • 1945 - British bombers attack railways at Wesel, Germany, over four days.
  • 1945 - 800-ship American armada arrives at Iwo Jima.
  • 1993 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Kharkov.
  • 2006 - Guernsey issues a postage stamp marking the 150th anniversary of the Victoria Cross, depicting the Battle of El Alamein in 1942.

Video game history:

  • 1993 - In Japan, Fujitsu introduces the Marty model of the FM Towns line of computer/game system. Marty has no keyboard, and plugs into a television. Software is run from a CD-ROM drive. Price is about US$800.
  • 1997 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A sit-down arcade game is played in a store, called Astro Blast.
  • 1999 - The International Solid-State Circuits Conference is held in San Francisco, California. Toshiba and Sony Computer Entertainment announce specifications of a new processor. It has two integer pipelines, two vector math units, dedicated MPEG-2 decoding subsystem, 128-bit chip, 250 MHz operation, and 125 MHz bus to memory.
  • 2000 - In Tokyo, Japan, Sega releases the Dreameye digital camera for the Dreamcast video game system.
  • 2003 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A video game is played on a big-screen television.
  • 2003 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. At a boring event, a child says "I didn't bring a Game Boy".
  • 2004 - THQ releases the MX Unleashed video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2006 - Capcom releases the Mega Man Anniversary Collection video game for the Game Boy Advance in the US.
  • 2009 - Nintendo releases the Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon video game for the Nintendo DS in the USA.
  • 2011 - Konami releases the Hard Corps: Uprising video game for the Xbox 360 in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1962 - In Stockholm, the dockyard housing the Vasa warship opens to public.
  • 1974 - The town of Falun in Dalecarlia hosts the World Championship Competitions on Skis, hosted by the Swedish Ski Association.
  • 2003 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. The side of a building is painted with an advertising mural, "ABSOLUT KRUSTY" with a bottle and green hair like the clown in the show. This is a reference to magazine advertisements for Absolut Vodka, by the V&S Absolut Spirits company of Sweden.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 1965 - The A & W Root Beer Company is granted a registered trademark of a bull's-eye image with letters "A & W" at top for restaurant services.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1965 - The Finance Minister confirms in the House of Commons that production of 1965 mint sets will resume later in the year, and that all orders received will be filled.

USA coin history:

  • 2009 - The US Mint launches the 2009 William Henry Harrison Presidential dollar in Charles City, Virginia.
  • 2012 - The US Mint releases the 2012 Chester Arthur Presidential dollar to circulation.

Sports history:

  • 1899 - Pelham Warner scores 132 on Test Cricket debut (England versus South Africa Johannesburg).
  • 1900 - Stanley Cup: Montréal Shamrocks beat Winnipeg Victorias, 3 games to 1.
  • 1915 - Frank "Home Run" Baker, 28, announces retirement following a contract dispute with Connie Mack; he sits out 1915 season.
  • 1923 - US female Figure Skating championship won by Theresa Weld Blanchard.
  • 1923 - US male Figure Skating championship won by Sherwin Badger.
  • 1933 - England regains the Ashes, thanks to bodyline tactics.
  • 1936 - IV Olympic Winter Games close at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
  • 1950 - Writers fail to elect anyone to Baseball's Hall of Fame.
  • 1952 - Hall of Famer Honus Wagner, age 77, retires; Pittsburgh Pirates retire his #33.
  • 1952 - Ian Craig makes New South Wales cricket debut aged 16 years 249 days (New South Wales record).
  • 1958 - Betsy Rawls wins LPGA Saint Petersburg Golf Open.
  • 1962 - US Open Tennis: Jimmy Bostwick defeats brother Pete to win.
  • 1966 - Bob Cowper makes 307 versus England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, 727 minute s, 20 fours.
  • 1966 - End of Wally Grout's Test Cricket career, 187 dismissals as Australia WK.
  • 1967 - Red Ruffing selected to baseball Hall of Fame.
  • 1970 - Joe Frazier knocks out Jimmy Ellis in five rounds for undisputed heavyweight boxing crown.
  • 1972 - Test Cricket debut of Lawrence Rowe West Indies versus New Zealand Kingston, 214 and 100.
  • 1972 - First NBA player to score 30,000 points (Wilt Chamberlain in 940 games).
  • 1973 - West Indies versus Australia at Kingston, first time since 1955 without Sobers.
  • 1975 - Washington Capitals' first NHL shutout, beating Kansas City Scouts 3-0.
  • 1980 - Eric Heiden skates 5km in 7:02.29 (Olympic record).
  • 1984 - Bill Johnson becomes first American to win Olympics downhill skiing gold.

  • 1985 - Livingston Bramble defeats Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini to win WBA champion.
  • 1985 - New Jersey Devils score their fastest hat trick: 42 seconds.
  • 1986 - Karlstad skates world record 10 km (14:12.14).
  • 1989 - Roger Clemens, Boston Red Sox pitcher signs record US$7.5 million, three-year contract.
  • 1991 - US female Figure Skating championship won by Tonya Harding.
  • 1992 - Los Angeles Lakers retire Magic Johnson's #32 uniform.
  • 1993 - Sandra Völker swims world record 50 metre backstroke (28.33 seconds).
  • 1994 - Johann Olav Koss skates world record 1500 metre (1:51.29).
  • 1996 - Gary Kirsten scores 188 for South Africa versus United Arab Emirates at Rawalpindi.
  • 1997 - At age 25, Jeff Gordon is youngest winner in Daytona 500 history.

  • 2022 - At Scotiabank Saddledrome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, NHL regular season game: Calgary Flames beats Anaheim Ducks by score 6-2.
  • 2022 - At PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, NHL regular season game: Florida Panthers beats Carolina Hurricanes by score 3-2.
  • 2022 - At Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, NHL regular season game: Winnipeg Jets beats Minnesota Wild by score 6-3.
