  • 1998 - Netscape makes source code for Netscape Communicator 5.0 browser available for free download on the Internet.
  • 1998 - Apple Computer ceases development of its Newton operating system and Newton OS-based products.
  • 2008 - The European Commission fines Microsoft 899 million euros (US$1.35 billion) for using high prices to discourage software competition, in defiance of a 2004 order from Brussels to provide the information on reasonable terms.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1925 - Disney completes the 14th Alice Comedy film, Alice Solves the Puzzle.
  • 1932 - Disney completes the Mickey Mouse film The Mad Dog. Pluto also appears.
  • 1935 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards an Oscar (Short Subjects, Cartoons) to Disney for the film The Tortoise and the Hare.
  • 1941 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards an Oscar (Music, Best Song) for the song "When You Wish Upon a Star" from the film Pinocchio.
  • 1941 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards an Oscar (Music, Best Score) for the film Pinocchio.
  • 1957 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, entitled The Chrisler Story, a behind the scenes look at the making of the film White Wilderness, nd Prowlers of the Everglades.
  • 1959 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, entitled The Adventures of Chip 'n' Dale.
  • 1961 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Goliath II for an Oscar Award in the category Short Subjects, Cartoons.
  • 1961 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Islands of the Sea for an Oscar Award in the category Short Subjects, Live-Action Subjects.
  • 1961 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film The Horse with the Flying Tail for an Oscar Award in the category Documentary, Features.
  • 1966 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring Ballerina, part one.
  • 1987 - Tokyo Disneyland welcomes its 40-millionth guest.
  • 1995 - The syndicated TV special Alien Encounters from New Tomorrowland airs. The show is a mix of quasi-documentary of UFO sightings, and introduction to the new ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter ride in the newly remodelled Tomorrowland at Walt Disney World.
  • 1997 - The ABC TV network premieres the series Vital Signs.
  • 1998 - The Hollywood Pictures film An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn is released to theaters in the USA.
  • 2005 - In Hollywood, California, the 77th Annual Academy Awards show is held. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards an Oscar (Best Animated Feature) to Disney/Pixar for the film The Incredibles.
  • 2005 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards an Oscar (Achievement in Sound Editing) to Michael Silvers and Randy Thom for the film The Incredibles.

World War II history:

  • 1936 - The French chamber ratifies the Franco-Soviet pact.
  • 1936 - French ministers decide that in the event of German violation of the Rhineland Zone, they would not act alone, but only with co-signatories of the Locarno Pact.
  • 1942 - Governor of Burma Sir Reginald Dorman-Smith orders the evacuation of capital Rangoon.
  • 1942 - Light aircraft carrier Langley is sunk by Japanese aircraft 50 miles south of Tjilatjap.
  • 1943 - Nine Norwegian special operatives destroy heavy water production of Norsk Hydroplant.
  • 1945 - British Bomber Command makes a final air raid on the Alma Pluto benzol plant in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Severe damage is inflicted to all vital installations.
  • 1998 - Greece issues a postage stamp depicting signing the German treaty turning the Dodeconese Islands over to English and Greek military, May 8, 1945.

Video game history:

  • 1996 - Nintendo releases the Pocket Monsters - Green Version and Pocket Monsters - Red Version video games for Super Game Boy in Japan.
  • 1998 - Sales to date of Crash Bandicoot 2 video game for the PlayStation: in USA, 1 million; in Japan, 0.8 million; in Europe, 0.34 million.
  • 2006 - Nintendo releases the Super Princess Peach video game for the Nintendo DS in the USA.
  • 2007 - Electronic Arts releases the SSX Blur video game for the Nintendo Wii in the US.
  • 2007 - Disney Interactive Studios releases the Lumines Plus video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2008 - Codemasters releases the Turning Point - Fall of Liberty video game for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the US.
  • 2009 - Sony Computer Entertainment releases the Killzone 2 video game for the PlayStation 3 in the USA.
  • 2011 - Hank Chien in New York City, New York, USA sets new world record score in Donkey Kong arcade video game: 1,090,400.

Swedish history:

  • 1617 - Peace with Russia is reached in the Treaty of Stolbova, with English mediation. Sweden renounces all claims to the Russian throne and Novgorod, gives back three towns for 20,000 rubles, and holds Gdov until new boundaries are delimited. Russia gives up Ingria and Karelia, including Ivangorod, Jama, Kexholm, Kopore, Nöteborg, abandons claims on Livonia, and agrees not to aid Poland against Sweden.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1992 - A Royal proclamation, effective March 1, specifies that the design of a 1992 25c nickel coin have "1867-1992" on obverse, and "Yukon" on the reverse.

  • 1995 - The Government of Canada announces its intention to replace the $2 bill with a $2 coin in 1996.

USA coin history:

  • 1793 - The Philadelphia Mint begins production of 1-cent coins for circulation.
  • 1906 - The Denver Mint first strikes dimes for circulation.
  • 1909 - US Mint Director Frank Leach authorizes the placement of letters "V.D.B." for the designer Victor David Brenner on the bottom border of the reverse of the Lincoln cent.
  • 1909 - The Denver Mint begins striking 1909-dated dimes.
  • 1923 - Congress authorizes Huguenot-Walloon commemorative half dollar.

Sports history:

  • 1874 - Baseball first played in England, at Lord's Cricket Grounds.
  • 1890 - D Needham and P Kerrigan box 100 rounds (6 hours 39 minutes), San Francisco; match is a draw.
  • 1901 - US baseball National League Rules Committee decrees that all fouls are to count as strikes except after two strikes.
  • 1908 - Sacrifice fly rule adopted for Major League Baseball (repealed in 1931, reinstated 1954).

  • 1936 - Willy den Ouden swims world record 100 metre free style (1:04.6).
  • 1937 - Donald Bradman scores 169 in 5th Test Cricket versus England in 223 minutes.
  • 1955 - Betty Jameson wins LPGA Sarasota Golf Open.
  • 1959 - Boston Celtics' Bob Cousy sets NBA record with 28 assists; Boston Celtics score 173 points against Minneapolis Lakers.
  • 1960 - US Olympics Ice Hockey Team beats USSR 3-2 en route to gold medal.
  • 1963 - Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees sign a baseball contract worth US$100,000.
  • 1966 - Ice Dance Championship at Davos won by Diane Towler/Bernard Ford (Great Britain).
  • 1966 - Ice Pairs Championship at Davos won by Belousova and Protopopov of USSR.
  • 1966 - Ladies Figure Skating Championship in Davos won by Peggy Fleming of US.
  • 1966 - Men's Figure Skating Championship in Davos won by Emmerich Danzer (Austria).
  • 1973 - Dick Allen signs a record US$675,000 three-year contract with Chicago White Sox.
  • 1977 - Judy Rankin wins LPGA Bent Tree Golf Classic.
  • 1982 - Earl Anthony becomes first professional bowler to win more than US$1 million.
  • 1982 - Dan Issel (NBA-Denver Nuggets) hits on 63rd consecutive free throw.
  • 1983 - Eamonn Coghlan sets indoor mile record of 3:49.78.
  • 1983 - Jan Stephenson wins Tucson Conquistadores LPGA Golf Tournament.
  • 1984 - Carl Lewis jumps world record indoor long jump (8.675 metres).
  • 1987 - Mike Conley triple jumps world indoor record (17.76 metres).
  • 1987 - NCAA cancels SMU's entire 1987 football schedule for gross violations of NCAA rules regarding athletic corruption.
  • 1988 - Ayako Okamoto wins LPGA Orient Leasing Hawaiian Ladies Golf Open.
  • 1988 - Bonnie Blair (US) wins Olympics 500 metre speed skating in record 39.1 seconds.

  • 2019 - (to January 28) The 2019 North Korea-United States summit is held in Hanoi, Vietnam. It is the second summit between United States President Donald Trump and the North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un.
  • 2020 - Triggered by fears of the spreading of COVID-19, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunges by 1,190.95 points, or 4.4%, to close at 25,766.64, its largest one-day point decline at the time.

  • 1933 - German parliament building, Reichstag, destroyed by fire (set by Nazis, blamed on communists).
