Personal computer history:

  • 2001 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs the Futurama TV show in the US. In the year 3000, a computer accesses the Internet, and loads and displays a video clip in a window looking very much like the Apple Computer Mac OS.
  • 2002 - In Japan, Sony announces the Clié PEG-NR70 and PEG-NR70V handheld computers. They features keyboard, 3.8-inch screen, 320x480 pixel 16-bit color screen, Palm OS, remote control software and infrared port, digital audio player, 16 MB RAM, 66 MHz Motorola Dragonball SuperVZ processor, Memory Stick slot, rechargeable lithium-polymer batteries. Size is 5.4 x 2.8 x 0.7 inches; weight is 7 ounces. The unit is to be on sale March 23. The PEG-NR70V includes a built-in digital camera, and is to be on sale April 13.
  • 2003 - Vector Capital announces it has signed an agreement with Microsoft to buy the company's 23 million shares in Corel for about US$13 million.
  • 2003 - Toshiba Computer Systems announces the Pocket PC e750 handheld computer. It features 400 MHz Intel XScale PXA255 processor, 96 MB RAM, CompactFlash II slot, Secure Digital slot, built-in Wi-Fi wireless connectivity, integrated headphone/microphone jack. Price is US$599.
  • 2007 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. A laptop computer is used by an accountant.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1933 - The Silly Symphony film Birds in the Spring is released to theaters.
  • 1938 - The Donald Duck film Donald's Better Self is released to theaters.
  • 1940 - Walt Disney signs a seven-year contract with the Disney studio at US$2000 per week.
  • 1955 - Disney releases the special cartoon Contrasts in Rhythm to theaters. It combines Bumble Boogie and Trees from the film Melody Time.
  • 1960 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, entitled This is Your Life, Donald Duck.
  • 1962 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring The Prince and the Pauper, part one: The Pauper King.
  • 1964 - Buena Vista releases Disney's live-action feature film A Tiger Walks to theaters. The film is based on a novel by Ian Niall.
  • 1973 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled The Little Shepherd Dog of Catalina.
  • 1977 - In the case of the Sierra Club against the U.S. Forest Service over Disney's proposed Mineral King ski resort, Judge Sweinert dismisses the suit for "lack of prosecution", as his last involvement in it had been in 1972. After twelve years in the courts and with much negative public opinion, the project is essentially abandoned.
  • 1977 - Buena Vista releases the animated feature film The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. This is a compilation of three previously released short films, with new animation linking them together.
  • 1977 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film The Littlest Horse Thieves to theaters in the US. The film was previously released in Great Britain as Escape From the Dark.
  • 1983 - Disney releases the animated short film Winnie the Pooh and a Day for Eeyore to theaters. The entire film had been animated by Rick Reinert Productions. This is the first animated Disney film since 1938 that was completely produced outside the company.
  • 1983 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film Trenchcoat to theaters in the US.
  • 1990 - The NBC TV network airs The Magical World of Disney show, entitled Sky High.
  • 1994 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film The Ref to theaters.
  • 1999 - The Gambia issues ten postage stamps depicting scenes from The Jungle Book film.
  • 2001 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs the Futurama TV show in the US. A character says he's "only one skull short of a Mouseketeer reunion".
  • 2003 - Disney releases the film Inspector Gadget 2 on DVD and videocassette in the US.
  • 2005 - The Disney Channel Original Movie Buffalo Dreams airs.
  • 2006 - The soundtrack to the Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical tops the Billboard album chart. Total sales worldwide: over 7 million copies.
  • 2009 - At the 2009 Annual Meeting of Shareholders of The Walt Disney Company, Disney announces the names of the company's two new cruise ships: Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Each ship will have 1,250 staterooms and will each be 128,000 tons.
  • 2009 - The live action film Race to Witch Mountain premieres at the El Capitan Theatre in California.
  • 2010 - Disney introduces the Disney Premier Passport, for use at all parks at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1952 - In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the National Plastics Exposition is held. The Naugatuck Chemical Division of U.S. Rubber company shows the Alembic I, formerly called the Brooks Boxer, a fiberglass-bodied Jeep. Chevrolet engineers are very interested with the new body material.
  • 1986 - The NBC television network begins airing new episodes of the Stingray series, based on the pilot movie of 1985.
  • 1993 - At Chilhowee Park in Knoxville, Tennessee, the Corvette Expo - Spring show is held, over four days. 123 Corvettes are presented for auction.

World War II history:

  • 1936 - German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop reports to Adolf Hitler that Britain's King Edward VIII had issued a directive to the British Government that "complications of a serious nature are in no circumstances to be allowed to develop." Hitler declares "The king of England will not intervene. He is keeping his promise."
  • 1938 - Adolf Hitler issues Directive No. 1 for the occupation of Austria.
  • 1938 - Adolf Hitler issues Directive No. 2 for the bloodless invasion of Austria.
  • 1938 - Austrian Chancellor Kurt von Schuschnigg resigns.
  • 1940 - A British Bomber Command Blenheim bomber sinks a German submarine.
  • 1941 - German 5th Panzer Regiment of 5th Light Division arrives in Tripoli, with 120 tanks.
  • 1941 - Soviet A.M. Vasilevskii writes the Strategic Deployment Plan, refined from the September 1940 plan, with the main attack on Germany proposed for southern Poland. The document states that the offensive is to begin on "12.6" (June 12).
  • 1941 - In the United States, Congress passes "An Act to Promote the Defense of the United States", known as the Lend-Lease Act, authorizing the President to sell, lease, lend, transfer, or exchange war supplies to any nation deemed vital to defence of the US. Total value is US$1.3 billion.
  • 1942 - American General Douglas MacArthur leaves the Philippines, with his wife, son, and a nurse.
  • 1945 - (night) The first unexploded V-2 rocket to hit England lands in a field at Paglesham in Essex.
  • 1945 - German forces complete their evacuation across the Rhine river, and blow up bridges at Wesel.
  • 1945 - German Field Marshal Albert Kesselring is placed in command of all German forces in the west, replacing Gerd von Rundstedt.
  • 1945 - 285 American B-29 bombers drop 1700 tons of incendiary bombs on Nagoya, Japan.
  • 1945 - 1079 British bombers attack Essen, Germany, dropping 4680 tons of bombs.
  • 1990 - Lithuanian Parliament declares incorporation into the Soviet Union was illegal, and declares independence.
  • 1992 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the General Douglas MacArthur leaving Corregidor, Philippines.

Video game history:

  • 1983 - Atari and Coleco Industries settle their legal disputes. Coleco is licensed to continue making and selling the Expansion Module No. 1 for the Colecovision, and is licensed to produce the Gemini video game system.
  • 1999 - Sony files three requests with the San Francisco Federal District Court, regarding Connectix's Virtual GameStation product. Sony demands that Connectix cease use of the PlayStation BIOS, deliver all copies of the BIOS to Sony, and give Sony all prototypes of the Windows version of the software. The court rejects all requests.
  • 2001 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs the Futurama TV show in the US. A character with a wrist computer says "... I've got Tetris on this thing.".
  • 2004 - Lions Gate Films releases the film Phil the Alien to theaters in Canada. A Nintendo Zapper light-gun controller is worn like a real gun.
  • 2007 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. A recreation room includes arcade game "Triangle Wars".
  • 2008 - Sega releases the Condemned 2: Bloodshot for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.
  • 2014 - Electronic Arts releases the Titanfall video game for the Xbox One and Xbox 360 in the USA.
  • 2014 - Bandai Namco releases the Dark Souls II video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1632 - Tilly raises a siege of Schweinfurt on the approach of King Gustav Adolf and general Horn, but soon leaves toward the Bavarian frontier.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1982 - A proclamation sets the designs of the 1982 commemorative and regular issue nickel dollars, effective March 15, 1982.
  • 1983 - The Federal Treasury Board grants clearance for responsibility of administration of the Royal Canadian Mint to be transferred from the Department of Public Works to the Mint itself.
  • 2009 - The Royal Canadian Mint releases to circulation a 2009 $1 coin commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Montreal Canadiens.

USA coin history:

  • 1878 - At the Philadelphia Mint, first strikes of the Morgan-designed silver dollar coin for circulation are made. The first strike is defective so is defaced. The second example is struck as a Proof, and presented to President Rutherford Hayes. The design is technically illegal, due to placement of words on sides; should be Liberty and date on obverse, USA and motto on reverse.
  • 2002 - The US Mint launches the 2002 Ohio State quarter dollar coin.
  • 2010 - The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit rules against a challenge (filed in 2007) to the motto "In God We Trust" appearing on US coins.

Sports history:

  • 1882 - Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association organized in Princeton, New Jersey, USA.
  • 1892 - First public basketball game (Springfield, Massachusetts, USA).
  • 1904 - Stanley Cup: Ottawa Silver Seven sweep Brandon Wheat Kings in two games.
  • 1905 - Stanley Cup: Ottawa Silver Seven beat Rat Portage Thisles, 2 games to 1.
  • 1910 - Jack Hobbs makes first Test ton (187 versus South Africa), his only Test hit wicket.
  • 1912 - First Stanley Cup hockey game to be played in three 20-minute periods, formerly played in 30-minute halfs, Québec Bulldogs beats Moncton Victorias 9-3.
  • 1917 - First NHL championship game ever played, Toronto Arenas beats Montreal Canadiens 7-3 in first of two-game set.
  • 1922 - Western Hockey Championship: Vancouver Millionaires (PCHA) sweep Regina Capitals, in two games.
  • 1924 - NHL Championship: Montreal Canadiens sweep Ottawa Senators in two games.
  • 1927 - First golden gloves tournament.
  • 1934 - Netherlands beats Belgium 9-3, in soccer.
  • 1956 - Louise Suggs wins LPGA Titleholders Golf Championship.
  • 1958 - Starting this season, American League batters are required to wear batting helmets.
  • 1961 - NHL record 40 penalties, Chicago Black Hawks and Toronto Maple Leafs (20 each).
  • 1973 - Kathy Whitworth wins LPGA S&H Green Stamp Golf Classic.
  • 1978 - University of San Francisco-led Bill Cartwright scores 23 points as the Dons oust North Carolina.
  • 1979 - Nancy Lopez wins LPGA Sunstar Golf Classic.
  • 1979 - Randy Hold receives 67 minutes in penalties in a 60 minute NHL hockey game.
  • 1980 - Rod Marsh bowls ten overs for 51 runs in dull Australia versus Pakistan cricket draw.
  • 1981 - Johnny Mize and Rube Foster elected to baseball Hall of Fame.
  • 1983 - World Ice Dance Championship in Helsinki Finland won by Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean (Great Britain).
  • 1983 - World Ice Pairs Figure Skating Championship in Helsinki won by Elena Valova and Oleg Vasiliev (USSR).
  • 1983 - World Ladies Figure Skating Championship in Helsinki won by Rosalynn Sumners (USA).
  • 1983 - World Men's Figure Skating Championship in Helsinki won by Scott Hamilton (USA).
  • 1984 - Chris Johnson wins LPGA Samaritan Turquoise Golf Classic.
  • 1986 - New York Islanders' Mike Bossy is first NHL player to score 50 goals in nine straight seasons.
  • 1986 - NFL adopts instant replay rule.
  • 1987 - Wayne Gretzky scores 1,500th NHL point.
  • 1990 - Maggie Will wins Desert Inn LPGA Golf International.
  • 1991 - John Smith, amateur wrestler, wins James E Sullivan Award.
  • 1991 - Monica Seles ends Steffi Graf's streak of 186 weeks ranked as #1 in tennis.
  • 1995 - Yolanda Chen hop-skip-jumps world indoor record 15.03 metre.
  • 1996 - Chris Harris scores 130 in losing New Zealand side versus Australia, World Cup.
  • 1996 - Mark Waugh scores 110 versus New Zealand for his third century of the World Cup.
  • 1997 - San Francisco Giants' player J T Snow suffers a fractured eye socket when hit by a pitch.
  • 2022 - At Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, NHL regular season game: Washington Capitals beats Vancouver Canucks by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, USA, NHL regular season game: New York Islanders beats Winnipeg Jets by score 5-2.
  • 2022 - At Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, USA, NHL regular season game: Columbus Blue Jackets beats Minnesota Wild by score 3-2.
  • 2022 - At PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, NHL regular season game: Pittsburgh Penguins beats Vegas Golden Knights by score 5-2.
  • 2023 - Mikaela Shiffrin wins her 87th World Cup Alpine skiing event, the slalom in Are, Sweden, beating Ingemar Stenmark's 34-year record of 86 wins.

Space exploration history:

  • 1960 - Pioneer 5 launched into solar orbit between Earth and Venus.
  • 1986 - Japanese probe Sakigake flies by Halley's Comet at 6.8 million km.
  • 2008 - At the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, US space shuttle Endeavour lifts off headed for the International Space Station. Its cargo includes part of a Japanese space laboratory and a Canadian-built robotic system.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1888 - Great Blizzard of 1888 strikes northeast US.

USA history:

  • 1779 - US Army Corps of Engineers is established (first time).
  • 1789 - Benjamin Banneker with L'Enfant begin to lay out Washington DC.
  • 1791 - Samuel Mulliken of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is first to obtain more than one US patent.
  • 1823 - First normal school in US opens, Concord Academy, in Concord, Vermont.
  • 1824 - US War Department creates the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
  • 1862 - CSA General Thomas Jackson evacuates Winchester, Virginia.
  • 1862 - US President Abraham Lincoln removes US General George McClellen as general-in-chief and makes him head of Army of the Potomac. General Henry Halleck is named general-in-chief.
  • 1864 - Skirmish at Calfkiller Creek (Sparta), Tennessee.
  • 1865 - USA Army General Tecumseh Sherman's USA forces occupy Fayetteville, North Carolina.

  • 2008 - The US Federal Reserve promises to lend up to US$200 billion of Treasury bonds on a monthly basis with mortgage-backed securities as collateral.
  • 2010 - The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit rules against a challenge (filed in 2007) to the motto "In God We Trust" appearing on US coins.

  • 1669 - Volcano Etna in Italy erupts, killing 15,000.
  • 1982 - Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat sign peace treaty in Washington, DC.
  • 2004 - In Madrid, Spain, ten simultaneous explosions on commuter trains and in rail stations kill 190 people.
  • 2006 - Slobodan MiloÜevic is found dead in his cell in the United Nations war crimes tribunal's detention centre, located in the Scheveningen section of The Hague.
