  • 1976 - The First Annual World Altair Computer Convention is held, at the Airport Marina Hotel near Albuquerque, New Mexico, over three days. This is the first such convention for the microcomputer industry. At the conference, Bill Gates explains his position on software piracy. In the hotel's penthouse suite, Processor Technology holds its own "booth" to promote their 4 kB memory boards for the Altair.
  • 1999 - The computer virus "Melissa" attacks about 250,000 PCs worldwide in about three days, using Microsoft Outlook to mail itself to email addresses in the address book. This is the first virus capable of jumping from computer to computer on its own.
  • 2001 - Caldera Systems announces it will change its name to Caldera International when it has completed acquiring the Unix products and services of the Santa Cruz Operation.
  • 2001 - The Microsoft Windows Hardware Engineering Conference is held, in Anaheim, California.
  • 2001 - At the Microsoft Windows Hardware Engineering Conference, Bill Gates introduces the Tablet PC initiative. It features a Transmeta Crusoe processor, touch-screen interface, MS Notebook handwriting recognition software, Windows XP operating system. Size is about 8.5 x 11 x 1 inches, weight is under 3 pounds; price will be US$2000-3500. Shipment date is scheduled for 2002.
  • 2008 - Advanced Micro Devices unveiled the "Phenom" microprocessor for desktop personal computers.

  • 1927 - Live-action filming is completed for the Alice Comedy film Alice's Channel Swim.
  • 1927 - Live-action filming is completed for the Alice Comedy film Alice's Medicine Show.

  • 1961 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring the film Man in Flight.

Sarah McLachlin and Randy Newman perform "When She Loved Me" from the movie Toy Story 2. Phil Collins wins for Best Original Song with "You'll Be In My Heart" from the Disney animated feature Tarzan.
  • 2000 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards an Oscar (Original Song) to Phil Collins for "You'll Be in My Heart" from the film Tarzan.
  • 2002 - In New York City, the Astor Plaza Theatre premieres the film The Rookie.
  • 2002 - The ABC TV network premieres The Court TV series.
  • 2014 - Disney releases the Marvel Studios film Captain America: The Winter Soldier to theaters in Belgium and Italy.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1960 - In Sebring, Florida, the 12 Hours of Sebring race is held, round 1 of the FIA GT Cup, and round 2 of the World Sports Car Championship.
    • Finishing 1st in Grand Touring 5000 class, 16th overall, is the RRR Motors #6 Corvette, driven by Bill Fritts and Chuck Hall.
    • Finishing 2nd in Grand Touring 5000 class, 26th overall, is the Camoradi USA #3 Corvette, driven by Fred Gamble, Jim Jeffords, and Bill Wuesthoff.
    • Finishing 2nd(?) in Grand Touring 5000 class, 32nd overall, is the Camoradi USA #4 Corvette, driven by Jim Jeffords and Fred Gamble.
    • Finishing 3rd in Grand Touring 5000 class, 35th overall, is the Johnson Chevrolet #5 Corvette, driven by Delmo Johnson and Dave Morgan.
    • Dick Thompson and Fred Windridge race the Jaguar Distributors of New York #2 1960 Corvette in Grand Touring +5000 class. The engine fails after 41 laps (5:12 PM). They place 54th overall.
    • Briggs Cunningham and John Fitch race the Jaguar Distributors of New York #1 1960 Corvette in Grand Touring +5000 class. After 27 laps (12:30 PM), rear hub failure and an accident put them out of the race. They place 58th overall.

  • 1966 - In Sebring, Florida, the 12 Hours of Sebring race is held.
    • Finishing 1st in Grand Touring +5000 class, 9th overall, is the Penske Racing #9 1966 Corvette 427-ci L88, driven by George Wintersteen and Ben Moore.
    • Finishing 2nd in Grand Touring +5000 class, 11th overall, is the Harold C. Whims #8 Corvette, driven by Don Yenko, Dave Morgan, and Harold Whims.
    • Richard Thompson and Dick Guldstrand race the Penske Racing #10 Corvette Grand Sport #001 with 427-ci engine in Prototype +5000 class. After 65 laps, the car is out due to an accident; the engine is broken and the frame bent.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - Adolf Hitler approves plans by German Navy to land and seize several Norwegian ports.
  • 1941 - Royal Canadian Navy armed yacht Otter is destroyed by an explosion and fire off Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. 19 die.
  • 1942 - (1400 hours) Operation Chariot sails from Falmouth, England for Saint Nazaire, France.
  • 1943 - (about 0730 hours) US naval Task Group 16.6 sights a Japanese re-supply convoy approaching the Komandorski Islands, near the Aleutian Islands. The task forces consists of one heavy cruiser, one light cruiser, and four destroyers. The Japanese force sighted is two heavy cruisers, two light cruisers, and six destroyers, escorting three transport ships.
  • 1943 - (about 0845 hours) Near the Aleutian Islands, Japanese heavy cruiser Nachi is struck by several shell hits by US warships.
  • 1943 - (0910 hours) Near the Aleutian Islands, Japanese heavy cruiser Maya hits US heavy cruiser Salt Lake City with a shell.
  • 1943 - (1010 hours) Near the Aleutian Islands, a Japanese shell hits the main deck of US heavy cruiser Salt Lake City, passing through the ship below the waterline.
  • 1943 - (1103 hours) Near the Aleutian Islands, an 8-inch shell hits US warship Salt Lake City below the waterline, exploding in a fuel tank.
  • 1943 - (1213 hours) The Battle of the Komandorsky Islands ends, as the Japanese ships withdraw, unable to re-supply a small garrison at Attu Island, at the end of the Aleutians chain of islands. Several ships on each side were damaged, and several deaths incurred on each side.
  • 1944 - (evening) 705 British bombers attack Essen, Germany, with good results. Nine planes are shot down.
  • 1944 - (evening) British bombers attack railway targets in Courtrai, France.
  • 1945 - Iwo Jima is declared secure.
  • 1945 - Allied forces on the Western Front are now completely east of the Rhine River.
  • 1945 - Japanese forces launch the "Ten-Ichigo" campaign on and around Okinawa.
  • 1960 - France issues five postage stamps honoring heores of the French Underground during the war.
  • 1993 - Poland issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Arsenal.
  • 2002 - Poland issues a postage stamp marking the 60th anniversary of the return of General Wladyslaw Anders' Army from the USSR.

Video game history:

  • 1993 - Nintendo releases the Star Fox video game for the Super NES in the US. The game is the first with the FX Chip for improved visuals and sounds.
  • 1997 - Nintendo releases the Blast Corps video game for the Nintendo 64 in the USA.
  • 2002 - Eidos releases the Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2 video game for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2003 - Capcom releases the Auto Modellista video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US. Price is US$49.99.
  • 2004 - Namco releases the R: Racing Evolution video game for the GameCube in Europe. Included with the GameCube version is Pac-Man Vs., which uses a link cable for players to play part of the game on the Game Boy Advance.

Swedish history:

  • 1990 - Mongolia issues a postage stamp depicting a Volvo 760 GLF car.
  • 2006 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A live-action opening is shown, using a Volvo car.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 1968 - Roy Allen, A & W company founder, dies.
  • 1968 - A & W adopts a new logo in the US. It is changed to an orange/brown/white oval design. "A" and "W" are in brown and the "&" is in orange, on a white field. Outside of the white is a half orange, half brown oval ring.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1856 - William Lyon Mackenzie again introduces a resolution in the House of Commons that Canada's currency should become a decimal system, equal to currency of the US. The resolution is defeated by a vote of 58 to 27.
  • 1965 - Thomas Shingles, chief engraver of the Royal Canadian Mint, retires, after 25 years of service. Myron Cook is appointed new chief engraver.
  • 1989 - In Montreal, the Empire Rare Coin Auction is held. An 1875-H Proof set (5c, 10c, 25c) is sold for $44,000.

USA coin history:

  • 1863 - The Philadelphia begins striking 1863-dated half dimes for circulation.
  • 1964 - US Treasury begins redemption of silver certificates in refined silver granules and bullion bars, at a value of $1.292929292 per ounce.
  • 1980 - (to March 28) Bowers and Ruddy Galleries conducts the auction of the second session of the John Work Garrett Collection from the Johns Hopkins University. Total sales: $11 million. Some highlights:
    • 1804 silver dollar, Class III: US$400,000, a record for a US Mint coin, and for a silver coin;
    • 1851 Augustus Humbert gold Proof slug, unique: US$500,000;
    • 1821 $2.50 gold: US$120,000;
    • 1879 "Schoolgirl" dollar pattern: US$105,000.

  • 2007 - The Denver Mint begins striking 2007 Washington state quarters for circulation.
  • 2009 - (to March 27) At the Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention, Bowers and Merena Auctions conducts the auction. Some highlights:
    • 1870-CC Coronet gold double eagle, AU-55 NGC: US$414,000.

  • 1856 - New South Wales' first first-class cricket game, versus Victoria at Melbourne; New South Wales wins.
  • 1889 - Bernard Tancred carries bat for 26 out of 47! South Africa versus England.
  • 1889 - Johnny Briggs took 15-26 (7-17 and 8-11) versus South Africa at Newlands.
  • 1889 - South Africa all out 47, then follow-on all out 43 versus England.
  • 1915 - Stanley Cup: Vancouver Millionaires (PCHA) sweep Ottawa Senators in 3 games.
