Personal computer history:

  • 1965 - Electronics magazine publishes an article by Gordon Moore, head of research and development for Fairchild Semiconductor, on the future of semiconductor components. Moore predicts that transistor density on integrated circuits would double every 12 months for the next ten years.
  • 1982 - Commodore International announces the B (700) and P (500) series of microcomputers. They feature 6509 CPU, 64 kB RAM expandable to 256 kB, 28 kB ROM with OS and BASIC, 80x25 green phosphor monitor, 94-key keyboard, twin 5.25-inch floppy disk drives, several I/O ports, for US$1700-3000.
  • 1982 - Apple Computer announces it is terminating its central purchasing agreement with Computerland, effective July 15. In its place, Apple will deal directly with individual Computerland outlets.
  • 1999 - IBM introduces the IBM ThinkPad 570 portable computer. It features 300 to 366 MHz mobile Pentium II, 4 GB hard drive, external floppy drive, 64 MB RAM, 12.1- to 13.3-inch inch TFT LCD screen, USB port. Weight is 3.9 pounds; price is US$2700-4000. Optional US$119 UltraBase adds MIDI, second USB port, and two docking bays for CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, LS-120 SuperDisk, 100 MB Zip drive, second hard drive, floppy drive, or battery.
  • 1999 - Caldera Systems releases OpenLinux 2.2 operating system. It includes Corel WordPerfect 8 and StarOffice software. Price is about US$50.
  • 2000 - In New York City's Grand Central Station, Microsoft launches the Pocket PC, a specification for handheld computers. The Pocket PC runs Microsoft Windows CE 3.0, and includes several applications: music player, word processor, Internet browser, and more.
  • 2000 - Compaq Computer introduces the iPAQ Pocket PC handheld computer. It features 2.25 x 3 inch color screen, USB port, 206 MHz Intel StrongARM processor, 32 MB RAM, Windows CE 3.0. Expansion packs offer access to PC Cards, flash memory cards, email, music file playing, digital camera, modem, bar code scanner, etc. Basic unit price is $699.
  • 2000 - Casio introduces the Casio Cassiopeia E-115 handheld computer. It features 131 MHz 64-bit NEC VR4121 processor, 32 MB RAM, 64,000-color 2.3 x 3.0-inch 240x320-pixel display, Type II CompactFlash slot, infrared and serial ports, speaker, microphone, stylus, Pocket PC operating system. The lithium ion battery powers the unit for about six hours. Price is US$599; weight is 9.2 ounces; size is 5.1 x 3.3 x 0.8 inches.
  • 2000 - Hewlett-Packard releases the HP Jornada 545 handheld computer. It features Windows CE 3.0, 4096-color 240x320 pixel passive matrix display, 16 MB RAM. Size is 5.2 x 3.1 x 0.6 inches; price is US$499. The HP Jornada 548 comes with 32 MB RAM for US$600.
  • 2001 - MandrakeSoft releases the MandrakeLinux 8.0 operating system. It is based on the Linux kernel 2.4.3.
  • 2002 - At auction, an Apple I computer with 9-inch amber monitor and Magnavox cassette player, sells for US$14,000.
  • 2004 - Apple announces new PowerBook computers. They feature 12.1- to 17-inch LCD screens, 1.33 GHz to 1.5 GHz G4 processor, 60-80 GB hard drive.
  • 2004 - Apple announces new iBooks computers. They feature 1-1.2 GHz G4 processor, 30-60 GB hard drive, 12.1- or 14.1-inch LCD screen.
  • 2005 - Majesco releases the Psychonauts game for personal computers in the US.
  • 2009 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A personal computer appears.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1926 - Bard's Hollywood Theater in Los Angeles previews the 31st Alice Comedy film, Alice Charms the Fish.
  • 1961 - Disneyland welcomes its 25-millionth guest, Dr. Glenn C. Franklin.
  • 1972 - In the case of the Sierra Club against the U.S. Forest Service over Disney's proposed Mineral King ski resort, the Supreme Court issues its ruling, voting four to three agreeing with the Court of Appeals in dissolving the injunction against commencing the project.
  • 1983 - The last episode of the Disney TV show Gun Shy airs.
  • 1983 - The Disney Channel begins airing the TV show Disney Studio Showcase.
  • 1983 - The Disney Channel begins airing the TV show Wish Upon a Star.
  • 1987 - Team Mickey's Athletic Club shop opens at the Walt Disney World Village in Walt Disney World.
  • 1988 - The Walt Disney Company acquires Childcraft Education Corporation from Grolier Incorported, for US$52 million. Childcraft is a maker of children's furniture and equipment.
  • 1991 - Disney releases the film The Party Tilyadrop Tour on videocassette.
  • 1994 - In New York, the Palace Theater sets a Broadway record by selling US$700,000 of tickets for the Beauty and the Beast stage play.
  • 1996 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Hollywood Pictures / Caravan Pictures live-action feature film Celtic Pride to theaters in the US.
  • 2000 - Comedy Central airs the South Park TV show in the USA. Phil Collins appears winning an Academy Award Oscar, singing a song like "You'll Be in My Heart" from Disney's Tarzan film.
  • 2005 - Buena Vista Games acquires Avalanche Software, located in Salt Lake City, Utah.
  • 2009 - The Space Mountain attraction at Walt Disney World closes for refurbishment.
  • 2009 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. Someone says "I think Bart is an incredible combination of Habitat for Humanity and the Jonas Brothers."

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1959 - At Marlboro Motor Raceway, Maryland, the SCCA holds a National car race.
    • Finishing 1st in B Production and 2nd overall is the 1959 "Purple People Eater Mark III" Corvette driven by Jim Jeffords.
    423: 2nd overall is the Corvette driven by Jim Jeffords.
  • 1989 - Chevrolet advises its dealers that the ZR-1 option would be postponed to the 1990 model year, due to development delays in producing engines. 84 test ZR-1 Corvettes have been built for testing.
  • 2001 - At the National Corvette Museum, the Official C5 Registry co-hosts the C5 Birthday Bash, over four days. 5000 people attend. The Museum raffles off a new Corvette Z06.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Great Britain announces it will defend Denmark, Netherlands, and Switzerland in the event of war.
  • 1940 - Quote by Norwegian King Haakon to the President of the Norwegian Supreme Court in Oslo: "the Norwegian Government can negotiate on no basis but the removal of the German troops from the country".
  • 1941 - British Prime Minister Winston Churchill personally informs Josef Stalin of an impending German attack, based on "Ultra" intelligence intercepts.
  • 1943 - 2000 Nazis with armored support make a final assault on the Jewish ghetto in Warsaw, resulting in over 50,000 deaths over several weeks, lasting until May 16.
  • 1943 - In Tunisia, the British 8th Army begins an attack north through Enfidaville toward Tunis.
  • 1945 - British bombers make a precision-bombing attack of the 12-inch guns on Heligoland.
  • 1948 - Poland issues a postage stamp marking the 5th anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising.
  • 1958 - France issues four postage stamps honoring heores of the French Underground during the war.
  • 1963 - Poland issues a postage stamp marking the 20th anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising.
  • 1983 - Poland issues a postage stamp marking the 40th anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising.
  • 1993 - Poland issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising.
  • 1993 - The Solomon Islands issues four postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of World War II.

  • 1982 - Namco releases the Dig Dug video game in arcades.
  • 2002 - Nintendo releases a black-cased Game Boy Advance in the United Kingdom.
  • 2002 - Nintendo releases the Super Mario Advance 2 video game in the United Kingdom.
  • 2002 - US District Judge Stephen Limbaugh rejects a request against a St. Louis ordinance of 2000 limiting access of minors to video game arcades. The judge rules that video games are not protected by freedom of speech.
  • 2005 - Buena Vista Games acquires Avalanche Software, located in Salt Lake City, Utah.
  • 2005 - Nintendo announces that Broadcom has signed a contract to provide wireless technology for the company's next game console.
  • 2005 - Midway releases the Unreal Championship 2 video game for the Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - Gallery Nineteen Eighty Eight holds an art show called "I Am 8-Bit" of pre-1995 2D videogame art.
  • 2005 - Majesco releases the Phychonauts video game for the Xbox in the US.
  • 2011 - Warner Bros. Interactive releases the Mortal Kombat video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.
  • 2011 - Electronic Arts releases the Portal 2 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.
  • 2011 - Square Enix releases Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection for the PlayStation Portable in the US.
  • 2011 - Sony Computer Entertainment releases the SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals video game for the PlayStation 3 in the US.
  • 2011 - The Sony PlayStation Network is shut down due to an "external intrusion".

Swedish history:

  • 1689 - In Italy, former Queen Kristina dies.
  • 1951 - In London, England, the first Miss World beauty pagent is held, part of the Festival of Britain. Winner is Kiki Haakonson, Miss Sweden.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1985 - The Charlton Press releases The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins, 39th edition. Price is $4.

USA coin history:

  • 1793 - Coinage of cents at the Philadelphia Mint is suspended due to lack of planchets.
  • 1854 - An official ceremony is held at the San Francisco Mint to mark initial production of double, one, half, and quarter eagles. This is the only day of 1854 production for quarter and half eagles.
  • 1933 - Franklin Roosevelt announces US will leave the gold standard.
  • 1971 - Senator Frank Church introduces a bill providing for two or more Bicentennial coins.
  • 2010 - The US Mint releases the first coin in the new 26-coin America the Beautiful quarter dollar coin program to circulation. The 2010-dated coin honors Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas.
  • 2012 - At the Central States Numismatic Society convention, Heritage conducts a coin auction. A USA 1792 Silver Center cent pattern, MS-61 PCGS, third-finest known, one of 14 known, sells for US$1.15 million.
  • 2022 - The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee recommends designs for the 2023 Native American dollar and five 2023 American Women quarter dollars. The recommended them for the dollar reverse is "Maria Tallchief American Indians in Ballet". Recommended individuals to be recognized on the quarters are American pilot Bessie Coleman, journalist Jovita Idár, Hawaiian composer Edith Kanaka'ole, and former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

  • 1897 - John J. McDermott of New York wins the first Boston Marathon (15 runners, 24.5 miles) with a time of 2:55:10.
  • 1898 - Second Boston Marathon won by Ron McDonald of Massachusetts in 2:42:00.
  • 1899 - Third Boston Marathon won by Lawrence Brignolia of Massachusetts in 2:54:38.

  • 1763 - English Parliament bans American colonies from printing their own paper money.
  • 1775 - British Marines and Light Infantry under Major John Pitcairn open fire on local militia of Massachusetts at Lexington, killing 19 with no English losses. This begins the American Revolutionary War.
  • 1775 - At Concord bridge, British troops are repulsed by Massachusetts militia with heavy losses to the British.
  • 1775 - British forces withdraw to Boston, beginning the American siege of the city.
  • 1782 - Netherlands recognizes US.
  • 1861 - Baltimore riots - four soldiers, 9 civilians killed.
  • 1861 - US President Abraham Lincoln orders blockade of Confederate ports.
  • 1862 - Louis Powell Harvey, US Governor of Wisconsin, drowns.

  • 1991 - Greyhound Bus posts $195 million loss for 1990.
  • 1993 - A 51-day stand-off at the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas, ends with a fire and shooting that kills 86 people (17 children), including leader David Koresh.
  • 1993 - George Mickelson, Governor of South Dakota, and seven others, die in a plane crash.
  • 1994 - Rodney King awarded US$3,800,000 in compensation for police beating.
  • 1994 - US Supreme Court outlaws excluding people from juries because of gender.
  • 1995 - Oklahoma City bombing: 168 people, including 8 Federal Marshals and 19 children, are killed at the Murrah Federal Building.
  • 1999 - The US Navy kills a civilian guard in the Naval Base at Vieques, an island east of Puerto Rico which the Navy has used since 1943. The death of the civilian officer sparks off a civil disobedience campaign throughout the island of Puerto Rico to protest the presence of the Navy on the island.
  • 2005 - The US Mint announces plans to produce 24-karat gold bullion coins in 2006.
  • 2007 - US and allied air forces conduct massive exercises over South Korea with over 500 planes.
