Personal computer history:

  • 1999 - In the US, Connectix ceases shipping its Virtual Game Station software for the Apple Macintosh computer, complying with a federal court order. Sony filed a trademark and patent infringement lawsuit against the company in January. The software allows Sony PlayStation games to be played on Apple computers.
  • 2000 - South Korea issues a 170-won postage stamp depicting a CD-ROM and a computer mouse.
  • 2001 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs the Futurama TV show in the US. In the year 3000, a clown makes a joke about Windows 3000 being used as a prison guard because it always locks up.
  • 2002 - Compaq Computer announces it has sold 2 million iPaq computers in the two years it has been selling them.
  • 2003 - Apple Computer releases updated iBook computers. They feature 800 or 900 MHz G3 processor, 12.1- or 14.1-inch LCD screen, 30 or 40 GB hard drive.
  • 2003 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the Opteron processor. It features 32-bit and 64-bit instruction operation, without requiring 32-bit code to be re-written.
  • 2003 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the Athlon XP 2500+ processor. Price is US$124 in 1000-unit quantities.
  • 2007 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. A laptop computer with mouse and scroll wheel is used in a house to access the Internet. The Web browser indicates this is an Apple computer. An online game is played, "Earthland Realms". Another desktop computer is used to play the online game.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1964 - The New York World's Fair opens, for the 300th birthday of New York City. Walt Disney's WED company constructed pavilions for: Ford (Magic Skyway), General Electric (Progressland), the state of Illinois (Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln), and Pepsi-Cola / UNICEF (It's a Small World).
  • 1987 - The NBC TV network airs the pilot Our Planet Tonight.
  • 1990 - The Minnie's Surprise Birthday Party show in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World closes.
  • 1990 - The Mickey's Birthdayland area in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World closes.
  • 1991 - Grenada Grenadines issues eleven postage stamps depicting various Disney characters and ecology themes.
  • 1994 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film The Inkwell to theaters.
  • 1995 - The Empress Lilly riverboat closes in Walt Disney World. Three restaurants on the ship close: Steerman's Quarters, Fisherman's Deck, and the Empress Room.
  • 1997 - Hollywood Pictures Home Video releases the film The Rich Man's Wife on videocassette.
  • 1998 - Disney's Animal Kingdom opens to the public at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
  • 1998 - The Creature Comforts shop opens on Discovery Island in Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1998 - Chester & Hester's Dinosaur Treasures shop opens in DinoLand U.S.A. in Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1998 - The Boneyard playground opens in DinoLand U.S.A in Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1998 - The Beastly Bazaar shop opens on Discovery Island in Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1998 - The Countdown to Extinction attraction opens in DinoLand U.S.A. in Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1998 - The Walt Disney Company's board of directors approves a 3-for-1 split of the company's common stock.
  • 1998 - Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida opens at the Disney-MGM Studios.
  • 1998 - Comedy Central airs the South Park TV show in the USA.
    • An announcer on TV says "...so I guess we'll be going to our feature movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit?".
    • A scene of a group of people trapped by snow, forced to cannibalize three of themselves is a reference to the 1993 Disney film Alive.

  • 2009 - Disney's Nature film division releases the film Earth in theaters in the US and Canada.
  • 2010 - Disney releases the Disneynature film Oceans in theaters.
  • 2011 - The Disneynature documentary film African Cats is released to theaters in the USA.
  • 2015 - Disney releases the Marvel Studios film Avengers: Age of Ultron to theaters in Belgium and France.
  • 2022 - Disney releases documentary film Polar Bear.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1956 - At the Pebble Beach raceway in Monterey, California, the first race of the SCCA season is held. Chevrolet's advertising agency, Campbell Ewald, enters 1956 Aztec Copper Corvette #46 prepared for racing by Chevrolet. Richard Thompson leads most of the race with the car, but the brakes completely fail with two laps to go. A Mercedes 300SL passes to win; Thompson finishes in second place overall, first in class.
  • 2000 - At the Phoenix International Raceway in Phoenix, Arizona, the Sun Automotive 200 at Pt Phoenix race is held, round three of the Grand-Am Motorola Cup series.
    • Finishing 2nd in SGS class and 2nd overall is the Phoenix American Motorsports #37 Corvette, driven by John Heinricy and Stu Hayner.
    • Finishing 3rd in SGS class and 3rd overall is the Powell Motorsport #11 Corvette, driven by Devon Powell and Doug Goad.
    • Finishing 4th in SGS class and 4th overall is the KAC Technologies #08 Corvette, driven by Randy Pobst and Andy Pilgrim.
    • Finishing 7th in SGS class and 9th overall is the Planet Earth Motorsports #43 Corvette, driven by Joe Nonnamaker and Bill Pete.
    • Finishing 8th in SGS class and 17th overall is the MTI Racing #98 Corvette, driven by Marty Miller and Reese Cox.
    • Finishing 11th in SGS class and 28th overall is the Team Naykid Racing #94 Corvette, driven by Scotty White and Bill Deters.
    • Finishing 12th in SGS class and 29th overall is the First Racing #22 Corvette, driven by Michael Culver and Mike Fitzgerald.
    • Finishing 13th in SGS class and 31st overall is the Powell Motorsports #30 Corvette, driven by Peter Tonelli, Craig Conway, and Devon Powell.

World War II history:

  • 1919 - Protocols for an alliance among France, Great Britain, and the USA are agreed on: Great Britain and USA make guarantees to France in the event of German aggression. The Rhineland is to be under Allied occupation for fifteen years. The document is signed by US President Woodrow Wilson and British Prime Minister David Lloyd George.
  • 1941 - Mainland Greece surrenders to Germany.
  • 1943 - In Tunisia, the British 1st Army near Medez el Bab attacks the Germany 334th Division.
  • 1944 - In the mid-Atlantic, Royal Canadian Navy frigates Matane and Swansea destroy German submarine U-311.
  • 1945 - Allied forces capture Toungoo, Burma.
  • 1945 - 767 British bombers make a heavy attack on Bremen, Germany.
  • 1961 - France issues four postage stamps honoring heores of the French Underground during the war.
  • 1975 - The USSR issues seven postage stamps marking the 30th anniversary of victory in World War II.
  • 2005 - Ukraine issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Video game history:

  • 1982 - The Quaker Oats Company announces it has acquired the home video game assets of U.S. Games Corporation.

  • 2002 - Nintendo announces that the launch price for the GameCube in the United Kingdom will be 129 pounds.

  • 2008 - Square Enix releases The World Ends With You video game for the Nintendo DS in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1808 - A Russian force of 2,000 men under Admiral Bodisko land on the southeast coast of Gotland, at Sles near Grötlingbo. Residents decide to allow their march into Visby, treating the force more as guests than invaders.
  • 1906 - (to May 2) The Intercalated Olympic Games are held in Athens, Greece. Sweden wins 2 gold, 5 silver, and 7 bronze medals.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1985 - In New York, Christie's holds an auction of part of the Norweb collection. A 1921 50-cent coin in EF grade sells for $17,600. A 1911-12 8-coin Specimen set in case sells for $33,000.
  • 1993 - Member of Parliament Bob Kaplan introduces a private member's bill in the House of Commons that seeks to abolish the 1c coin.

USA coin history:

  • 1837 - Philadelphia Mint ships equipment to Dahlonega Mint.
  • 1864 - US Congress approves switching the 1-cent coin from copper-nickel to French bronze (95 percent copper, 5 percent tin and zinc), weighing 48 grains. Also authorized is a 2-cent coin of the same composition and twice the weight. Legal tender amount of the 1-cent coin is limited to 10 cents, and the 2-cent piece to 20 cents. This is the first time minor coins are given legal tender status. Production and circulation of tokens of those denominations is banned.

Sports history:

  • 1823 - R J Tyers patents roller skates.
  • 1876 - First National League baseball game, 3000 fans, Boston Red Stockings beat Philadelphia Athletics 6-5 in Philadelphia; Athletics' Wes Fisler scores league's first run.
  • 1898 - Baltimore Orioles' pitcher James Hughes no-hits Boston Beaneaters 8-0.
  • 1898 - Cincinnati Reds' pitcher Theodore Breitenstein no-hits Pittsburgh Pirates 11-0.
  • 1906 - New rule puts umpire in sole charge of all US Major League Baseball game balls.

  • 1908 - Queensland beats New South Wales by 171 runs for their first cricket win at Gabba.

  • 1947 - First NBA Championship: Philadelphia Warriors beat Chicago Stags, 4 games to 2.
  • 1954 - NBA adopts the 24-second shot clock and six team-foul rule.
  • 1955 - Kansas City Athletic's first game, they beat Detroit Tigers 6-2.
  • 1956 - Patty Berg wins LPGA Dallas Golf Open.
  • 1957 - All National League teams integrate, John Irwin Kennedy is first black on Philadelphia Phillies.
  • 1959 - Chicago White Sox beat Kansas City Athletics 20-6, in one inning Sox score 11 runs on one hit, ten walks, and three errors.
  • 1959 - New York Yankees' player Whitey Ford strikes-out 15, beating Washington Senators 1-0 in 14 innings.
  • 1962 - Marilynn Smith wins LPGA Sunshine Golf Open.
  • 1962 - New York Mets tie a National League record by losing 9 straight to start season.
  • 1962 - Pittsburgh Pirates tie record of ten straight wins to start season.
  • 1962 - Stanley Cup: Toronto Maple Leafs beat Chicago Blackhawks, 4 games to 2.
  • 1966 - Atlanta Braves win their first game, beating New York Mets 8-4.
  • 1969 - Joe Frazier knocks out Dave Zyglewick in 1:36 for heavyweight boxing title.
  • 1970 - New York Mets' Jerry Grote sets record of 20 put-outs by a catcher.
  • 1970 - New York Mets' Tom Seaver consecutively strikes out ten San Diego Padres, for a total of 19.
  • 1970 - Washington Senators beat New York Yankees 2-1 in 18 innings.
  • 1978 - Firestone World Bowling Tournament of Champions won by Earl Anthony.
  • 1979 - Jane Blalock wins LPGA Florida Lady Citrus Golf Tournament.
  • 1981 - Los Angeles Dodgers' rookie Fernando Valenzuela tosses his third shutout in four starts.
  • 1982 - Atlanta Braves lose after winning first 13 games of season.
  • 1983 - New York Rangers 2-New York Islanders 5-Patrick Division Finals-Islanders win series 4-2.
  • 1983 - Start of first Sri Lanka-Australia Test Cricket match (at Kandy).
  • 1984 - Vicki Fergon wins LPGA S&H Golf Classic.
  • 1988 - New Jersey Devils' Patrik Sundstrom ties NHL playoff record of eight points in a playoff game (hat trick and five assists) in 10-4 rout over the Washington Capitals.
  • 1988 - Women are allowed to compete in the Little 500 bicycle race in Bloomington, Indiana, for the first time.
  • 1989 - Nolan Ryan strikes out his 5,000th batter (Rickey Henderson).
  • 1991 - Frank Thomas is first Chicago White Sox player to homer at new Comiskey Park.
  • 1993 - Seattle Mariner Chris Basio no-hits Boston Red Sox.
  • 1994 - Michael Moorer beats Evander Holyfield in 12 for heavyweight boxing title.
  • 1995 - General Tire World Bowling Tournament of Champions won by Mike Aulby.
  • 1995 - George Foreman beats Axel Schulz in 12 rounds for heavyweight boxing title.
  • 2008 - John Smoltz of the Atlanta Braves becomes the 16th Major League Baseball pitcher to record 3000 career strikeouts.
  • 2022 - At RingCentral Coliseum, Oakland, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Texas Rangers beats Oakland Athletics by score 8-1.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: New York Mets beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 6-5.

  • 1937 - New York City college students stage fourth annual peace strike.
  • 1940 - Rear Admiral Joseph Taussig testifies before US Senate Naval Affairs Committee that war with Japan is inevitable (He was right).
  • 1951 - Ticker-tape parade for General Douglas MacArthur in New York City, New York, USA.
  • 1952 - First atomic explosion on network news, Nob Nevada.
  • 1954 - US Senate Army-McCarthy televised hearings begin.
  • 1955 - US Congress orders all US coins to bear motto "In God We Trust".
  • 1964 - The New York World's Fair opens in Flushing Meadow, Corona Park, New York, held for the 300th anniversary of New York City. US President Lyndon Johnson opens the fair, which covers over 646 acres of land. Theme of the fair is "Peace Through Understanding". Walt Disney's WED company constructed pavilions for: Ford (Magic Skyway), General Electric (Progressland), the state of Illinois (Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln), and Pepsi-Cola / UNICEF (It's a Small World).
  • 1970 - First Earth Day held internationally to conserve natural resources; largest single protest in American history.
  • 1970 - New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller signs into law a package of revenue aids for New York City, including off-track betting.
  • 1972 - Apollo 16 astronauts John Young and Charles Duke explore the Moon.
  • 1979 - The Albert Einstein Memorial is unveiled at The National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC.
  • 1986 - US performs nuclear test at Nevada Test Site.
  • 1990 - Lebanon releases US hostage Robert Polhill after 39 months.
  • 1990 - Death of Albert Salmi at age 62 of suicide after killing his terminally-ill wife in their home in Spokane, Washington, USA; actor (The US Steel Hour TV show, Studio 1 TV show, Alcoa Presents TV show, Daniel Boone, The Virginian, Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, Bonanza, Caddyshack).
  • 1991 - Shalom America (Jewish cable network) is launched in Brooklyn and Queens.
  • 1992 - 6.0 earthquake in California.
  • 1992 - Billy Wayne White, murderer, executed in Texas at age 34.
  • 1992 - Plane crash at Perris Valley Airport, California, kills 16 parachutists.
  • 1993 - Holocaust Memorial Museum dedicated in Washington, DC.
  • 1993 - The web browser Mosaic version 1.0 is released.
  • 1998 - Disney's Animal Kingdom opens to the public at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
  • 2010 - The Deepwater Horizon oil rig off the Louisiana coast sinks into the Gulf of Mexico two days after an explosion tore through it.
  • 2021 - World leaders mark Earth Day by hosting a virtual summit on climate change, during which more ambitious targets for greenhouse gas emission reductions are proposed, including a 40% cut by 2030 for the United States.
