Personal computer history:

  • 1983 - Tandy introduces the TRS-80 Model 4 computer. It features 4 MHz Zilog Z80A processor, 16 kB RAM, cassette interface, keyboard, 80x24 text 12-inch monochrome monitor, for US$1000. A US$2000 system comes with 64 kB RAM and two 180 kB 5.25-inch floppy drives.
  • 1994 - Commodore shuts down the Amiga division.
  • 1998 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. Homer Simpson appears unexpectedly on a multi-monitor jumbo screen, much like Bill Gates appearing on the jumbo screen at the Macworld Expo in August 1997.
  • 2001 - In the USA, Senators Joe Lieberman and Herb Kohl introduce the Media Marketing Accountability Act, government legislation intended to give the Federal Trade Commission authority to prosecute those in the entertainment industry who market sdult-rated products to children.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1940 - The Mickey Mouse film Tugboat Mickey is released to theaters. Donald Duck and Goofy also appear.
  • 1981 - The NBC TV network airs the Disney's Wonderful World show, entitled Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life.
  • 1987 - The syndicated TV show Today's Business is cancelled, after losing close to US$5 million in seven months.
  • 1987 - The Fox TV networks airs the preview of the series Down and Out in Beverly Hills.
  • 1990 - The Mickey's Magical TV World show opens at Mickey's Starland in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1991 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Oscar to theatres.
  • 1991 - The ABC TV network begins airing the series Dinosaurs.
  • 1992 - The Beauty and the Beast show The Enchanted Book Shoppe gives its last performance at Plaza Garden in Disneyland.
  • 2002 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. One character says to another "Mr. President, you almost caused a nuclear war. What are you going to do next?" The reply is "I'm going to Escalatorland." This is a reference to Disney commercials where a sports figure says he is going to Disneyland.
  • 2003 - Disney premieres the film The Lizzie McGuire Movie in Hollywood, California.
  • 2005 - Disney Consumer Products announces a portable audio/video player available in different character-themed designs. The device can play DVDs, CDs and MP3s, and display digital photos. The 3.5-inch handheld model sells for US$129.99, and a larger 7-inch version sells for US$199.99.
  • 2009 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. A short scene mimics the 1960s Disney TV shows where Tinkerbell flies in front of the Disneyland castle.
  • 2010 - Disney Cruise Line's Disney Magic cruise ship makes its maiden call at the Valletta Waterfront, Malta.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 2004 - In Le Mans, France, the Corvette Racing team participates in preliminary testing in preparation for the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in June. Test lap times are about 10 seconds faster than last year.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - British Minister for War Leslie Hore-Belisha announces introduction of conscription.
  • 1940 - The British government decides to evacuate central Norway.
  • 1941 - German forces capture Corinth, Greece.
  • 1942 - British General Harold Alexander decides Burma is lost, that forces must withdraw to ensure the defence of India.
  • 1942 - (evening) British Bomber Command launches a fourth and final attack on Rostock, Germany. Over the past four nights of attacks, 70% of the city is destroyed. Of 521 sorties in total, only 11 planes are shot down. The Heinkel aircraft factory is hit, but is back in production in a few weeks. Joseph Goebbels and Adolf Hitler agree to retaliatory attacks on British cultural, resort, and civilization centers, to "bring the English to their senses". Goebbels writes in his diary: "They belong to a class of being to whom you can talk only after you have first knocked out their teeth."
  • 1943 - In Tunisia, US General Omar Bradley's 2nd Corps resumes its attack on German forces, forcing a withdrawal to a line east of Mateur, 15 miles from Bizerte.
  • 1944 - (0420 hours) German destroyer T-29 sinks in the English Channel, after shelling from Royal Canadian Navy destroyer Haida, and three other British and Canadian ships.
  • 1944 - (evening) 493 British bombers attack targets in Essen, Germany. Enormous damage is inflicted. Seven planes are shot down.
  • 1944 - (evening) 225 British bombers attack the ball-bearing industry centre at Schweinfurt, Germany. About 21 planes are shot down.
  • 1945 - Operation Exodus begins, with British Bomber Command flying released prisoners of war home to England.
  • 1945 - First American and British prisoners-of-war are liberated from the Rangoon City Jail in Burma.
  • 1945 - (1300 hours Eastern War Time) US President Harry Truman advises the American Legation in Stockholm, Sweden, to pass on to his German contact the terms of Germany's unconditional surrender to American, British, and Soviet forces.
  • 1994 - Russia issues three postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus.
  • 2010 - Russia issues a 50-ruble postage stamp marking the 65th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Video game history:

  • 1999 - Nintendo releases the Super Smash Bros. video game for the Nintendo 64 in the US.
  • 2001 - In the USA, Senators Joe Lieberman and Herb Kohl introduce the Media Marketing Accountability Act, government legislation intended to give the Federal Trade Commission authority to prosecute those in the entertainment industry who market adult-rated products to children.
  • 2002 - Microsoft reduces the price of the Xbox in Europe.
  • 2002 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. A handheld video game system appears, looking like the Game Boy Color.
  • 2005 - Capcom releases the Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2006 - Nintendo reveals the name of its upcoming new video game system: Wii.
  • 2007 - The US Federal Communications Commission releases a report on the impact of media violence on children, saying Congress could regulate violence on television without violating the First Amendment.
  • 2007 - Sony head of the PlayStation division Ken Kutanagi announces he will step down.

Swedish history:

  • 2002 - Sweden hosts the 66th world championship of ice hockey, over 16 days. Games are played in Göteborg, Jönköping, and Karlstad.

USA coin history:

  • 1802 - The House of Representatives passes the bill to abolish the Mint.
  • 1853 - The Philadelphia Mint begins striking 1853 Seated Liberty quarter dollars with arrows and rays indicating the new weight.
  • 1862 - US troops reclaim possession of the New Orleans Mint.
  • 1911 - The Denver Mint begins striking 1911-dated eagles.
  • 1969 - US ownership of pre-1934 gold coins no longer requires a license from the Treasury Department.
  • 2010 - The Philadelphia Mint begins production of 2010 Yosemite National Park quarters for circulation.
  • 2012 - The US Mint launches the 2012 Chaco Culture National Historic Park quarter dollar coin at the park in New Mexico.

Sports history:

  • 1900 - American League baseball opener in Cleveland, Ohio draws 6,500.
  • 1905 - Chicago Cubs' Jack McCarthy becomes only major league player to throw out three runners at the plate in one game, all were ends of a double play.
  • 1912 - First homerun hit at Fenway Park (Hugh Bradley, Boston Red Sox).
  • 1931 - Lou Gehrig hits a homerun but is called out for passing a runner, the mistake costs him American League home run crown; he and Babe Ruth tie for season.
  • 1935 - Frank Boucher is given the NHL's Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship permanently for winning it 7 of 11 years.
  • 1941 - A tradition begins, first organ at a baseball stadium (Chicago Cubs).
  • 1950 - Last horse race at Havre de Grace Track in Maryland is run.
  • 1950 - University of Miami ends William and Mary straight tennis match victories at 82.
  • 1959 - Wiffi Smith wins LPGA Betsy Rawls Golf Open.
  • 1962 - Boston Red Sox Bill Monbouquette no-hits Chicago White Sox 1-0.
  • 1964 - 18th NBA Championship: Boston Celtics beat San Francisco Warriors, 4 games to 1.
  • 1964 - Marilynn Smith wins LPGA Titleholders Golf Championship.
  • 1966 - Arnold "Red" Auerbach retires as Boston Celtics' coach.
  • 1969 - Firestone World Bowling Tournament (Mercury Open) won by Jim Godman.
  • 1974 - New York Yankees trade Peterson, Beene, Kline and Buskey to Cleveland Indians for Chambliss, Tidrow and Upshaw.
  • 1975 - Philadelphia Phillies' Mike Schmidt's two homeruns ties National League record of 11 homeruns in April.
  • 1980 - Gerard Nijboer runs Dutch record marathon (2:09:01).
  • 1980 - Philadelphia Phillies' Steve Carlton pitches his sixth one-hitter (beats Saint Louis Cardinals).
  • 1981 - Beth Solomon wins LPGA Birmingham Golf Classic.
  • 1982 - Gene Michaels becomes the New York Yankees' manager for the second time.
  • 1983 - San Antonio spurs beat Denver Nuggets 152-133 in NBA playoff game.
  • 1986 - Baseball game between California Angels and Minnesota Twins delayed for 9 minutes by strong winds.
  • 1986 - Firestone World Bowling Tournament of Champions won by Marshall Holman.
  • 1988 - NBA approves addition of third referee in the 1988-89 season.
  • 1988 - New York Mets' Davey Johnson becomes second manager to record 400 victory in first four years (Al Lopez did it first).
  • 1990 - New York court of appeals ends 2.5 year legal battle over 1988 America's Cup by refusing jurisdiction of the case.
  • 1990 - Nolan Ryan ties Bob Feller's record of pitching 12 one-hitters.
  • 1991 - Soccer star Diego Maradona, suspended for using cocaine, arrested in Argentina for possession and distribution of illegal narcotics.
  • 1992 - Maggie Will wins LPGA Sara Lee Golf Classic.
  • 1992 - Ozzie Smith steals his 500th base.
  • 1995 - American baseball season begins after lengthy strike.
  • 1995 - Coors Field opens in Denver; Colorado Rockies beat New York Mets 11-9 in 14 innings.
  • 1996 - Shaun Pollock takes four wickets in four balls for Warwickshire in B&H.
  • 2009 - In Argentina, round 5 of the FIA World Rally Championship is won by Sébastien Loeb.
  • 2009 - In Motegi, Japan, round 2 of the FIM MotoGP Championship is won by Jorge Lorenzo.
  • 2009 - In Sakhir, Bahrain, round 4 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship is won by Jenson Button.
  • 2010 - First baseman Ryan Howard agrees to a US$125 million five-year contract extension with the Philadelphia Phillies.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Oakland Athletics by score 8-2.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats Los Angeles Dodgers by score 5-3.

  • 1989 - AT&T announces New Jersey's 201 area code will split into 908 and 201.

  • 1992 - Offshore Cape Mendocino, California, magnitude 6.5 and 6.7 earthquakes occur, 3.5 hours apart. Felt throughout much of northern California and southern Oregon.

  • 2004 - The US Bureau of Engraving and Printing introduces new US$50 Federal Reserve notes, incorporating color and more complex security elements.

Other history:

  • 1982 - Argentina surrenders to Britain on South Georgia near Falkland Island.
  • 1986 - At the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Ukraine, USSR, the fourth reactor explodes; 56 die in the world's worst nuclear power plant disaster. Radioactive fallout resulted in the evacuation and relocation of 336,000 people.
  • 2005 - Facing international pressure, Syria withdraws the last of its 14,000 troop military garrison in Lebanon, ending its 29 year military domination of that country.
