Personal computer history:

  • 1985 - At the Pierre hotel in New York City, Microsoft introduces the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software for the Macintosh.
  • 2010 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. A USB flash drive for Windows and Macintosh appears as a promotional give-away from a beer company.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1927 - Film Booking Offices releases the Alice Comedy film Alice's Knaughty Knight to theaters.
  • 1964 - The Illinois Pavillion opens at the New York World's Fair, with Disney's Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln operating flawlessly.
  • 1986 - Disney's Circle-Vision film Portraits of Canada debuts in Vancouver, BC, Canada, for the Expo '86 world exposition.
  • 1993 - The Theater of the Stars attraction on Hollywood Boulevard in the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park closes.
  • 1995 - Walt Disney Home Video releases the film Angels in the Outfield on videocassette for US$19.99, and laserdisc for US$39.99.
  • 2003 - Buena Vista releases the animated and live-action feature film The Lizzie McGuire Movie to theaters in the US.
  • 2010 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. The Mary Poppins character appears flying with her umbrella. A character says "We're like Jiminy Cricket for the whole ding-dang town."

World War II history:

  • 1935 - France and the Soviet Union conclude negotiations for a five-year Treaty of Mutual Assistance.
  • 1941 - (0500 hours) British at Habbaniya, Iraq, launch an attack on Iraqis building up force outside the base.
  • 1942 - British cruiser Edinburgh is scuttled following German torpedo raids 150 miles north of Murmansk, Soviet Union, carrying 93 cases of four 28-pound bars of gold, partial payment from the Soviet Union to the USA for weapons and military supplies.
  • 1942 - The US Task Force 17 fleet heads west to search for Japanese ships.
  • 1943 - German submarine U-465 under commander Heinz Wolf is lost with all hands (48 dead).
  • 1945 - (early) The American 10th Army makes a night attack advancing 1400 yards on Okinawa, Japan, arriving close to Yonabaru.
  • 1945 - (0640 hours) The final German defenders of the Dutch port of Delfzijl surrender.
  • 1945 - British troops make an amphibious landing on the southern tip of Burma, 20 miles south of Rangoon.
  • 1945 - British forces capture Prome, Burma.
  • 1945 - A large group of German rocket engineers surrender to American forces.
  • 1945 - Karl Dönitz appoints Count Lutz Schwerin von Krosigk as Foreign Minister, replacing Joachim von Ribbentrop.
  • 1945 - (1200 hours Greenwich mean time) The unconditional surrender of about one million men of the German army in Italy goes into effect. German command radio calls on remaining troops to surrender.
  • 1945 - The British Government announces that the air raid warning system has been discontinued. It was heard 1224 times during the war.
  • 1945 - German Lieutenant-General Karl Weidling surrenders the city of Berlin to Russian forces.
  • 1945 - Breslau learns of the surrender of Berlin, and General Herman Niehoff asks Army Group Center that he be allowed to surrender the city. His request is denied.
  • 1945 - US 7th Army in Germany captures Field Marshal General Karl von Rundstedt, former commander in the West.
  • 1945 - Rangoon, Burma, is recaptured from the Japanese by the Indian 26th Division.
  • 1945 - Irish Prime Minister Eamon de Valera expresses condolences to the German Legation for Adolf Hitler's death.
  • 1945 - The 2nd New Zealand Division enters Trieste, Italy.
  • 1945 - Over two days, residents of Montevideo, Uruguay celebrate the fall of Berlin, Germany. The celebrations turn to rioting and looting; 58 are injured, and thousands of dollars worth of property are damaged.
  • 1945 - American units of 24th Division enter the city of Davao on Mindanao, Philippines.
  • 1945 - (1230 hours) French Pierre Laval arrives at Barcelona airport, agreeing to be interned and dealt with by Allied Governments.
  • 1945 - (after noon) The American 13th Armored Division peacefully enters Braunau, in former Austria, birthplace of Adolf Hitler.
  • 1945 - (1500 hours Moscow time) Berlin, Germany, capitulates. Capturing the city are the First White Russian and the First Ukranian armies. In twelve days of defence of the city, 343,000 Germans were killed.
  • 1945 - (1630 hours) New Zealand 2nd Division of the British 8th Army accepts the surrender of the German garrison in the port of Trieste, Yugoslavia.
  • 1945 - (by 2100 hours) 70,000 German troops in Berlin lay down arms in surrender to Russian forces.
  • 1945 - (evening) 138 British bombers attack Kiel and nearby airfields. This is the last Bomber Command offensive of the war.
  • 1945 - (evening) Marshal Josef Stalin officially announces the capture of Berlin, Germany.
  • 1946 - Poland issues a postage stamp marking the Silesian uprisings, 1939-45.
  • 1995 - Great Britain issues five postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • 1995 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the capture of Berlin by Russian troops.
  • 1995 - Viet Nam issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • 2006 - Tanzania issues seven postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Video game history:

  • 1995 - 3DO demonstrates M2 3-D technology for the Interactive Multiplayer video game system.
  • 2004 - Fox Television airs the Malcolm in the Middle TV show in the USA. Part of the show takes place in a restaurant with video games, focusing on a dance game called "Jump Jump Dance Party!"

Swedish history:

  • 1709 - King Karl's forces set siege to the fortress of Poltava defended by 4000 Russians, on the Vorskla river.
  • 1980 - Employers lock out 770,000 workers, after labor unions reject a government wage proposal of a 2.3% increase. Unions had demanded 11%.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1901 - Finance Minister Fielding gives notice in the House of Commons of a resolution to establish a branch of the Royal Mint in Canada. The plan includes a $75,000 annuity for maintenance of the facility.
  • 1980 - In Montreal, Quebec, the Monex '80 coin show is held. 2500 people attend.
  • 1985 - The CTV television network show Canada A.M. features an interview with Michael Regozinsky of Empire Industries regarding the recent purchase of the 1911 silver dollar pattern.

USA coin history:

  • 1854 - The US government purchases the site in San Francisco, California, for a branch mint.
  • 1878 - An Act of Congress abolishes the 20-cent coin.
  • 1935 - Congress authorizes the Rhode Island Tercentenary silver half dollar coin, and Hudson commemorative half dollar coin.

Sports history:

  • 1876 - In Cincinnati, Ohio, Chicago's Ross Barnes hits the first home run in the history of baseball's National League.
  • 1903 - 29th Kentucky Derby: Hal Booker aboard Judge Himes wins in 2:09.
  • 1904 - 30th Kentucky Derby: Shorty Prior aboard Elwood wins in 2:08.5.
  • 1906 - 32nd Kentucky Derby: Roscoe Troxler aboard Sir Huon wins in 2:08.8.
  • 1909 - Honus Wagner steals his way around bases in first inning against Chicago Cubs.
  • 1917 - Cincinnati Reds' Fred Tooney and Chicago White Sox' Hippo Vaughn pitch duel no-hitter, Vaughn gives up two hits and a run in the 10th, so Cincinnati wins 1-0.
  • 1920 - First game of National Negro Baseball League played in Indianapolis, Indiana.
  • 1923 - Senator Walter Johnson pitches his 100th shutout, beats New York Yankees 3-0.
  • 1930 - Des Moines (Western League) defeats Wichita 13-6 in baseball to open first ballpark with permanently installed lights.
  • 1936 - 62nd Kentucky Derby: Ira Hanford aboard Bold Venture wins in 2:03.6.
  • 1939 - Lou Gehrig ends 2,130 consecutive game streak, New York Yankees beat Detroit Tigers 22-2.
  • 1942 - 68th Kentucky Derby: Wayne D Wright aboard Shut Out wins in 2:04.4.
  • 1949 - Don Newcombe, first start, shuts out Cincinnati Reds on five hits to win 3-0.
  • 1953 - 79th Kentucky Derby: Hank Moreno aboard Dark Star wins in 2:02.
  • 1954 - Stan Musial hits five homeruns in a doubleheader.
  • 1958 - New York Yankees threaten to broadcast games nationwide if National League goes ahead with plans to broadcast games into New York City.
  • 1959 - 85th Kentucky Derby: Bill Shoemaker aboard Tomy Lee wins in 2:02.2.
  • 1962 - Benfica wins 7th Europe Cup I.
  • 1964 - 90th Kentucky Derby: Bill Hartack aboard Northern Dancer wins in 2:00.
  • 1965 - Kathy Whitworth wins LPGA Shreveport Kiwanis Golf Invitational.
  • 1965 - Marilynn Smith wins LPGA Peach Blossom Golf Open.
  • 1967 - Stanley Cup: Toronto Maple Leafs beat Montreal Canadiens, 4 games to 2.
  • 1968 - 22nd NBA Championship: Boston Celtics beat Los Angeles Lakers, 4 games to 2.
  • 1970 - 96th Kentucky Derby: Mike Manganello on Dust Commander wins 2:03.4.
  • 1971 - Sandra Haynie wins LPGA Dallas Civitan Golf Open.
  • 1976 - Joanne Carner wins LPGA Lady Tara Golf Classic.
  • 1978 - NBA championship: Portland Trail Blazers win in four games.
  • 1981 - 107th Kentucky Derby: Jorge Velasquez on Pleasant Colony wins in 2:02.
  • 1982 - Beth Daniel wins LPGA Birmingham Golf Classic.
  • 1984 - Mattingly's single breaks up Lamarr Hoyt's perfect game bid.
  • 1984 - Cleveland Indians' Andre Thornton ties record for most walks (6 in 16 innings).

  • 1988 - Baltimore Orioles sign a 15-year lease to remain in Baltimore and get a new park.
  • 1988 - Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose is suspended for 30 days for pushing an umpire.
  • 1992 - 118th Kentucky Derby: Pat Day aboard Lil E Tee wins in 2:03.
  • 1993 - Kristi Albers wins Sprint Golf Classic.
  • 1993 - Sandra Palmer wins LPGA Sprint Senior Challenge Golf Tournament.
  • 1995 - Montreal Expos bat out of order against New York Mets in 6th inning.
  • 1998 - 124th Kentucky Derby: Kent Desormeaux aboard Real Quiet wins in 2:02.4.
  • 2005 - Trailing 9-3 after eight innings, the Saint Louis Cardinals mount their greatest ninth-inning comeback in franchise history defeating the Cincinnati Reds 10-9 at the Great American Ballpark.
  • 2009 - At Churchill Downs, the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby horse race takes place. Canadian horse Mine That Bird wins, the second-biggest upset in Derby history.
  • 2016 - Leicester City is crowned champions of English Premier League soccer.
  • 2022 - At RingCentral Coliseum, Oakland, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Tampa Bay Rays beats Oakland Athletics by score 6-1.
  • 2022 - At Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Houston Astros beats Seattle Mariners by score 3-0.
  • 2022 - At Citi Field in New York City, New York, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Atlanta Braves beats New York Mets by score 5-2.

  • 1973 - Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries sells a US 1868 3-cent rose George Washington postage stamp with "B" grill embossing for US$23,000 The stamp is one of four known; this is the first time one is sold at public auction.

  • 1985 - Microsoft introduces the Excel spreadsheet program for the Macintosh. Despite Lotus Development releasing Jazz four months before Excel ships, Excel quickly dominates the market, increasing sales of the Macintosh just as VisiCalc and Lotus 1-2-3 had done for their platforms earlier.
  • 1985 - US performs nuclear test at Nevada Test Site.
  • 1994 - Dr Kevokian found innocent on assisting suicides.
  • 1997 - Republic of Texas security chief Robert Scheidt surrenders.
  • 1999 - Norman J. Sirnic and Karen Sirnic are murdered by the serial killer Angel Maturino Resendiz in a parsonage in Weimar, Texas (his fourth and fifth victims in his fourth slaying incident).
  • 2000 - Bill Clinton announces that accurate GPS access would no longer be restricted to the U.S. military.
  • 2005 - The Pontiac Grand Am car ceases production at the 100 year-old Lansing Car Assembly plant.
  • 2009 - The Pilgrim's Plunge water ride opens at Holiday World in Indiana, USA, the world's largest water ride drop at 131 feet high and 45-degree slope.
  • 2023 - About 11,500 film and television writers of the Writers Guild of America go on strike in the USA; previous strike was 15 years ago.

Other history:

  • 2008 - In the Patagonia region of Chile, volcano Chaiten begins erupting for the first time in over 9000 years. Two nearby towns are completely evacuated.
