Personal computer history:

  • 1984 - Apple Computer announces that 70,000 Macintosh computers have been shipped in the first 100 days since its announcement.
  • 2000 - In the Philippines, 24-year-old Onel De Guzman releases a virus that he had proposed creating as part of his undergraduate thesis. The email message was sent with subject "ILOVEYOU", and attachment "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU". When opened, the virus activates, sending the message and attachment to every name on the email program's address list.
  • 2002 - Hewlett-Packard and Compaq Computer complete their merger.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1929 - Disney completes the Mickey Mouse film When the Cat's Away. Minnie Mouse also appears. This film is a remake of the Alice Comedy film Alice Rattled by Rats.
  • 1931 - The Mickey Mouse film The Moose Hunt is released to theaters.
  • 1982 - Walt Disney Productions files a suit against Williams Electronics for infringing Disney's Tron trademark, by the arcade video game Robotron.
  • 1983 - The TV show Mickey and Donald Kidding Around airs.
  • 1988 - Antigua & Barbuda issues sixteen postage stamps depicting Disney characters at various EPCOT Center sites.
  • 1991 - Steve Jobs accepts a deal for Pixar Animation Studios to make three feature films for the Walt Disney Company for 12.5 percent of gross revenue of theater and video sales.
  • 1991 - Disney releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film One Good Cop to theatres.
  • 1991 - Disney releases the film The Jungle Book on videocassette. Price is US$24.99.
  • 1993 - The NBC TV network airs the two-hour TV movie Day-o.
  • 1994 - The Walt Disney Company announces plans to start the Disney cruise venture.
  • 1996 - Disney releases the animated feature film The Lion King to theaters in Estonia.
  • 1997 - Ariel's restuarant at the Beach Club at Walt Disney World closes.
  • 2009 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA.
    • The title of this episode, "Waverly Hills 9-0-2-1-D'oh", is a play on Disney Channel's original series Wizards of Waverly Place.
    • The character Alaska Nebraska is a play on Disney's "Hanna Montana" character and TV show.
    • A Tigger picture and a Winnie-the-Pooh doll appear.

  • 2011 - Disney Cruise Line's Disney Wonder (1754 passengers) begins its first cruises from Vancouver, Canada, to Alaska, USA.

  • 1959 - At Virginia International Raceway, SCCA holds National Championships car races.
    • Finishing 1st in B-Production class and 1st overall is the #1 "Purple People Eater Mark III" Corvette driven by Jim Jeffords.
    • Finishing 2nd in B-Production class and 2nd overall is the #99 Corvette driven by Roy Tuerke.
    • Finishing 3rd in B-Production class and 7th overall is the #133 Corvette driven by Bob Johnson.
    • Finishing 4th in B-Production class and 18th overall is the #122 Corvette driven by Alvin Forsyth.

  • 1987 - At the Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California, the 24th Annual Monterey Triple Crown race is held, part of the IMSA Camel GT series. The Corvette GTP finishes 2nd.
  • 1993 - Corvette chief engineer Dave Hill unveils the CERV-4 test car at the General Motors Technical Center in Warren. Most of the hundreds of people attending did not even know the test car was being built. It cost Chevrolet about US$1.2 million to build.
  • 2002 - The 19th annual One Lap of America race is held, nine days. 84 entries compete in 5140 miles of racing in 19 states.
    • Finishing 1st in Vintage American class and 2nd overall is the 1963 GSR Corvette Grand Sport replica coupe, driven by Michael Miller and Aaron Quine.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Soviet Union leader Josef Stalin replaces Maksim Litvinov as foreign commissar with Vyacheslav Molotov.
  • 1940 - (0215 hours) The Allied Expeditionary Force in Norway completes its withdrawal from Namsos and Andalsnes.
  • 1940 - The French destroyer Bison is bombed and sunk in the North Sea, while escorting a troop convoy.
  • 1940 - (0840 hours) The British destroyer Afridi is bombed and sunk in the North Sea, while escorting a troop convoy from Norway to England.
  • 1941 - (to May 4) SS Malalkand is bombed in a 300 Luftwaffe bomber attack on Liverpool cargo of 1000 tonnes of bombs and shells explode over 74 hours. 57 vessels destroyed, half of port's shipping berths destroyed, entrance to dock blocked.
  • 1942 - (1100 hours) Japanese light carrier Shoho moves to cover the Port Moresby Invasion Force.
  • 1943 - (afternoon) Twelve New Zealand Ventura bombers take off from England to bomb a power station at Amsterdam. Only one plane reaches the target, and misses. Ten planes are shot down.
  • 1944 - (evening) 360 British bombers attack a German military camp at Mouilly-le-Camp. 42 planes are shot down.
  • 1945 - Hans Fritsche, chief assistant to Joseph Goebbels, gives a deposition stating that Goebbels and Adolf Hitler had committed suicide in Berlin.
  • 1945 - Quote of Japanese Premier Kantaro Suzuki to the Japanese people on the present state of war: "We are fully prepared and we have in our forces... an unsurpassed strategical skill.".
  • 1945 - American, British, and Soviet forces smash the remains of two German armies in north-west Germany, capturing 150,000-500,000 prisoners. British forces occupy Hamburg.
  • 1945 - American, British, and Canadian planes sink or damage over 64 ships off the Baltic coast of Schleswig-Holstein, as thousands of Germans flee toward Denmark and Norway.
  • 1945 - The British 14th Army captures Rangoon, Burma.
  • 1945 - Brazilian War Minister Eurico Dutra announce the Brazilian Expeditionary Force will return home from Italy immediately.
  • 1945 - Karl Dönitz moves his headquarters to Flensburg, just south of Denmark.
  • 1945 - Karl Dönitz signs an edict written by Albert Speer, prohibiting the destruction of any facilities.
  • 1945 - British bombers attack and sink German Hamburg South America Line ship Cap Arcona (27,600 tons) in the East Sea, with the loss of about 5000 people of 6000 on board.
  • 1945 - Canadian forces capture Oldenburg, abandoned by German defenders.
  • 1945 - US troops meet US 5th Army from Italy at Brenner Pass between Austria and Italy.
  • 1945 - Heinrich Himmler, disguised as a Wehrmacht private, surrenders to a British sentry at a bridge in Bavaria.
  • 1945 - (about 1600 hours) British Field Marshal Bernhard Montgomery tells German General of the Army, Admiral Hans von Friedeburg and three others to surrender unconditionally all German forces in Holland, Friesen, Frisian Islands, Helgoland, Schleswig-Holstein, Denmark, and all other islands. They take the message back to Field Marshal Ernst Busch. Friedeburg informs Montgomery of the German wish to dicuss surrender of all German armed forces.
  • 1945 - (1943 hours) US 103rd Infantry Division enters Innsbruck peacefully, accepting surrender from garrison commander General Burheim.
  • 1990 - Bahamas issues two postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, depicting the Spitfire I, and Hurricane IIc.
  • 1990 - The Falkland Islands issues five postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, depicting Spitfire planes.
  • 1995 - Algeria issues a 3d postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • 1995 - Greece issues two postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the liberation of concentration camps.

  • 1983 - Mattel files a lawsuit against Atari, accusing it of luring away three employees who then helped develop game cartridges compatible with Mattel's Intellivision game system.
  • 2002 - Nintendo launches the GameCube in Europe.
  • 2005 - Microsoft Game Studios releases the Forza Motorsport video game for the Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - Sony releases the Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee video game for the PlayStation Portable in the US.
  • 2009 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA.
    • A man plays a video game, mimicing Microsoft's Halo.
    • A man says "Where's my video games? My Xbox, my Wii?"

  • 2010 - Nintendo releases the Picross 3D video game for the Nintendo DS in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1435 - A joint commission of Danes and Swedes meet in Halmstad. The King and the Council reach an agreement to settle their dispute. Erik would again be recognized as king, provided he repledge to act according to Swedish law.
  • 1960 - The Treaty of Stockholm establishing the European Free Trade Association is ratified.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1919 - The British Treasury appoints Mr. Arthur H.W. Cleave to be Deputy Master of the Ottawa branch of the Royal Mint, following the retirement of James Bonar on June 30.
  • 1921 - Legislation passes amending the Currency Act, authorizing a nickel 5c coin, legal tender in amounts up to $5.
  • 1999 - The Royal Canadian Mint launches the fifth Millennium 25c coin in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The coin depicts furtraders and explorers in a canoe.

USA coin history:

  • 1802 - All foreign gold and silver coins cease to be legal tender in the USA for three years.
  • 1805 - Spanish milled dollar coins resume legal tender status in the USA.
  • 1838 - Two pairs of 1838-dated half-dollar dies arrive at the branch mint in New Orleans.
  • 1865 - The US purchases the site of the future Carson City Mint.
  • 1912 - The Denver Mint begins striking 1912-dated dimes.
  • 1920 - The US Senate passes a bill to coin a 2-cent piece with the portrait of Theodore Roosevelt.
  • 1933 - Nellie T Ross takes office as Mint Director.
  • 1935 - Congress authorizes 1935 California-Pacific Exposition commemorative half dollar program, up to 250,000 coins.

Second place finisher Eight Belles broke both front ankles, and was immediately euthanized. Race attendance was 157,770, the second-largest in history of the race.
  • 2009 - In Marrakech, Morocco, round 3 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship is held. Race 1 is won by Rob Huff; race 2 is won by Nicola Larini.
  • 2009 - In Jerez, Spain, round 3 of the FIM MotoGP Championship is won by Valentino Rossi.

  • 2003 - The Old Man of the Mountain, a rock formation in New Hampshire, USA, crumbles after heavy rain.
  • 2008 - Tropical cyclone Nargis passes through western Myanmar killing over 140,000 people and destroying thousands of homes. Winds reached 120 mph and tidal waves reached 12 feet high. 2-3 million residents are left homeless. This is the country's deadliest natural disaster ever in recorded history.

  • 1999 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average closes above 11,000 (11,014.70) for the first time.
  • 2000 - In San Antonio, Texas, computer pioneer Datapoint files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
  • 2003 - The Old Man of the Mountain, a rock formation in New Hampshire, USA, crumbles after heavy rain.
  • 2008 - At Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby is held. Race favorite Big Brown wins by nearly five lengths. Second place finisher Eight Belles broke both front ankles, and was immediately euthanized. Race attendance was 157,770, the second-largest in history of the race.
  • 2016 - Donald Trump wins Indiana primary, securing Republican nomination for President.
  • 2018 - The lower Puna eruption causes destruction of structures and forces many citizens of Hawaii to evacuate as lava floods the land.
  • 2020 - Venezuelan dissidents and an American-based private military company, Silvercorp USA, unsuccessfully attempt to infiltrate Venezuela and forcibly remove President Nicolás Maduro from office.

Other history:

  • 2008 - Tropical cyclone Nargis passes through western Myanmar killing 78,000 to 130,000 people and destroying thousands of homes. Winds reached 120 mph and tidal waves reached 12 feet high.
