  • 2008 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A laptop computer appears, in writing a review of a film.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1942 - Walt begins seeking the rights to the book Victory Through Air Power, to turn it into a film.
  • 1949 - The film Seal Island is generally released.
  • 1965 - The Orlando Sentinel newspaper reports rumors of an "East Coast Disneyland".
  • 1977 - The Space Mountain attraction opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland. Estimated cost to build: $20 million.
  • 1977 - The Starcade games arcade opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
  • 1980 - The NBC TV network airs the Disney's Wonderful World show, featuring The Secret of Lost Valley, part two.
  • 1986 - The ABC TV network airs The Disney Sunday Movie, entitled Love Leads the Way.
  • 1990 - The Disney Channel airs the last episode of Just Perfect.
  • 1994 - Disney releases the animated film compilation Winnie the Pooh: Learning Volume 1 - Making Friends / Sharing and Caring on laserdisc for US$30. It includes Cloud, Cloud Go Away, Tigger's House Guest, The Bug Stops Here, Tigger is the Mother of Invention, Lights Out, The Rats Who Came to Dinner, No Rabbit's a Fortress.
  • 1998 - Uganda issues eleven postage stamps marking the 70th anniversary of Mickey Mouse.
  • 1998 - Astronaut Buzz Aldrin and Buzz Lightyear attend the re-opening of the Moonliner attraction in Disneyland. The Moonliner was removed in 1966.
  • 2003 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US.
    • The episode title "Old Yeller-Belly" is a reference to the book, dog, and Disney film Old Yeller.
    • A parody of the Disney-ABC TV show Live with Regis and Kelly is shown.

  • 2004 - The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction opens at Disney's California Adventure.
  • 2012 - Disney releases Marvel's The Avengers movie in 3-D and IMAX theaters in the USA.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1974 - At the Lime Rock Park raceway in Lime Rock, Connecticut, Round 1 of the SCCA Trans-American Championship series is held.
    • Finishing 9th is the E.F. Miller & Co. Corvette, driven by John Orr.
    • Finishing 10th is the Leaseline Corvette, driven by Cam Champion.
    • Finishing 14th is the Oleyar Corvette, driven by Michael Oleyar.
    • In 20th place, but not finishing the race, is the Babe's Garage Corvette, driven by Milton Headley.

  • 1983 - Grenada Grenadines issues a postage stamp depicting a 1963 Corvette Sting Ray.
  • 1998 - Netherlands Antilles issues a 225-cent postage stamp depicting a 1963 Corvette.
  • 2000 - Speedvision automotive television programming introduces the "Corvette - The American Dream" series.
  • 2002 - At Buttonwillow, California, the British Extravaganza vintage races are held, over two days. Tommy Thompson wins the A/B-production race in his #48 1968 Corvette.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Japanese Prime Minister Kiichiro Hiranuma declares to Adolf Hitler that Japan would support Germany and Italy with political, economic, and military aid if one was attacked by a power other than the Soviet Union, but not right away.
  • 1943 - German submarine U-109 under commander Joachim Schramm is lost with all hands (52 dead).
  • 1943 - (to May 6) An Atlantic convoy outward bound from England results in the sinking nine German submarines. British corvette Pink sinks U-192 under commander Werner Happe, with all hands (55 dead). HMS Loosestrife sinks U-638 under commander Oskar Staudinger, with all hands (44 dead). British destroyer Vidette sinks U-125 under commander Ulrich Folkers, with all hands (54 dead). Oribi sinks U-531 under commander Herbert Neckel, with all hands (54 dead). British sloop Pelican sinks U-438 under commander Heinrich Heinsohn, with all hands (48 dead). British Coastal Command aircraft sink U-710. Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft sink U-630 under commander Werner Winkler, with all hands (47 dead). U-659 and U-439 collide and sink. U-659 under commander Hans Stork suffers 44 dead of 47 crew. U-439 under commander Helmut von Tippelskirch suffers 40 dead of 49 crew.
  • 1943 - (evening) 596 British bombers attack Dortmund, Germany.
  • 1945 - (0153 hours) Japanese troops begin landing on the eastern side of Okinawa.
  • 1945 - (about 0600) More Japanese troops land at various beaches on Okinawa, behind American lines. About 2000 begin attacks on US forces, but are soon destroyed or surrounded.
  • 1945 - (0745-0915 hours) Japanese planes sink five American surface ships and damage several others, in a heavy attack off Okinawa. Over 150 Japanese planes are shot down.
  • 1945 - (0800 hours) German delegates of the 24th Army request surrender terms of the French.
  • 1945 - (0925 hours) Salzburg surrenders to American forces.
  • 1945 - German Field Marshal Fedor von Bock, Commanding Army group South (Russia), is killed in an air-raid.
  • 1945 - General Harry Crerar of the Canadian 1st Army orders all planned assaults called off, as a German surrender is considered imminent.
  • 1945 - Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten announces that the Burma campaign is at an end. Japanese casualties numbered 347,000, with 97,000 confirmed killed.
  • 1945 - At Dachau, Germany, US forces rescue German General Alexander Frieherr von Falkenhausen.
  • 1945 - 50-100 B-29 Superfortresses of the US 21st Bomber Command from the Mariana Islands attack Japanese airfields on Shikoku Island and on Kyushu.
  • 1945 - Nine ships carrying Germans escaping toward Denmark and Norway are sunk in the Baltic. 100 other ships are damaged.
  • 1945 - British forces land on Jutland, Denmark.
  • 1945 - Soviet forces begin attacking Danish islands of Moen, Laaland, and Falster.
  • 1945 - US 7th Army's 36th Infantry Division captures German Governor General of Poland Hans Frank in Berchtesgaden, Germany.

  • 1945 - In Breslau, German General Herman Niehoff requests a cease fire with the Russians. General Gluzdovsky accepts.
  • 1945 - US Forces release Josef Müller from captivity.
  • 1945 - German leader Karl Dönitz orders all submarine commanders to cease hostilities and return to home bases.
  • 1945 - (about 1700 hours) German General of the Army, Admiral von Friedeberg and three others return to British Field Marshal Bernhard Montgomery, accepting terms of surrender.
  • 1945 - (1825 hours) Near Hamburg, the unconditional surrender of one million troops in German land, sea, and air forces in Holland, Denmark, and northern Germany facing the Canadian 1st Army and British 2nd Army is arranged. German General of the Army and Commander in Chief of the Navy Admiral von Friedeberg, Rear Admiral Wagner, General Paulik, Major Friedeberg sign the surrender terms for Germany. Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery signs on behalf of Dwight Eisenhower.
  • 1945 - (late) The American 7th Army captures Berchtesgaden and hundreds of other cities and towns. 80,000 prisoners are taken.
  • 1947 - Denmark issues three postage stamps in memory of the struggle for liberty and second anniversary of the liberation of the country.
  • 1955 - Netherlands issues a postage stamp marking the 10th anniversary of liberation.
  • 1960 - The USSR issues a postage stamp depicting General I.D. Tcherniakovski, war hero.
  • 1995 - Belarus issues two postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • 1995 - Denmark issues four postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the country.
  • 1995 - Kyrgystan issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • 2004 - Belarus issues two postage stamps for the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the area from German occupation.
  • 2005 - Denmark issues two postage stamps depicting the sailors in World War II.
  • 2010 - Alderney issues seven postage stamps marking the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

  • 1999 - The US Senate begins hearings on marketing violence to children.
  • 2004 - Rockstar releases the Red Dead Revolver video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the USA.
  • 2004 - Crave releases the Future Tactics: The Uprising video game for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox in the US and Canada.
  • 2004 - Sony releases the Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US and Canada.
  • 2005 - The Public Broadcasting Service airs the Maya & Miguel TV show in the USA. A bet is made to see if a child can stop playing video games for a week.
  • 2007 - Activision releases the Spider-Man 3 video game for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, and Game Boy Advance in the USA.
  • 2011 - Udon Entertainment releases the first chapter of the three-volume manga Mega Man Gigamix in North America.

Swedish history:

  • 1436 - On an island on Lake Hjälmaren near Stockholm, Måns Bengtsson, son of the lawman of Närke, kills Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson with an axe.
  • 1632 - King Gustav Adolf abandons the siege of Ingolstadt, due to losses and the withdrawal of Maximilian to Regensburg.
  • 1924 - (to July 27) The 8th Olympic Games are held in Paris, France. Sweden wins 4 gold, 13 silver, and 12 bronze medals.
  • 1961 - The Vasa warship is tugged into a dry dock at Beckholmen. Excavation begins on the contents of the ship.
  • 1996 - Angola issues a postage stamp depicting the 1789 Swedish ship Stybjorn.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 1974 - A & W (USA) begins using an image of a standing bear in a sweater with an oval A & W logo on its chest.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1979 - In Montreal, Monex '79 convention is held. 3291 attend. Auction highlights: 1921 5c gem uncirculated $11,000; 1936 dot 25c BU $2100; 1947 specimen set, blunt $1, CR 50c, $8500; 1946 specimen set $6000; 1929 specimen set $27,000, resold for $40,000 at the convention.
  • 2012 - At the Royal Canadian Mint's facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Canadian finance minister strikes the last cent to be produced for circulation. The last one million struck for circulation will be sold as collector products.

USA coin history:

  • 1968 - Robert Wallace, assistant secretary of the US Treasury, announces to the Metropolitan New York Numismatic Convention in New York City "The possibility of ever permitting them [silver coin hoarders and smelters] to reap windfall profits of millions of dollars at the expense of taxpayers will, to say the least, not be very popular".
  • 1999 - The White House holds a ceremony launching the Sacagawea dollar program.
  • 2004 - US Treasury approves design of the New River Gorge for the West Virginia State quarter dollar coin.

Sports history:

  • 1871 - First baseball league game (National Association of Baseball Players), (Fort Wayne Keiongas 2, Cleveland 0) Deacon Jim White gets first hit, a double. Bill Lennon becomes first catcher to throw a runner out trying to steal second.
  • 1897 - 23rd Kentucky Derby: Buttons Garner aboard Typhoon II wins in 2:12.5.
  • 1898 - 24th Kentucky Derby: Willie Simms aboard Plaudit wins in 2:09.
  • 1899 - 25th Kentucky Derby: Fred Taral aboard Manuel wins in 2:12.
  • 1918 - New York Yankees set record with 8 sacrifices, beat Boston Red Sox's Babe Ruth 5-4.
  • 1919 - First legal Sunday baseball game in New York City (Philadelphia Phillies beat New York Giants 4-3).
  • 1924 - (to July 27) The Games of the VIII Olympiad are held in Paris, France.
  • 1929 - Lou Gehrig hits three consecutive homeruns, New York Yankees 11, Detroit Tigers 9.

  • 1981 - New York Yankees' Ron Davis strikes out eight consecutive California Angels, ran record of 13 strikeouts of last 14 faced, also saved Gene Nelson's first win, 4-2.
  • 1981 - Silvana Cruciata runs 15km female world record (49:44.0).
  • 1982 - Minnesota Twins' rookie outfielder Jim Eisenreich, who suffers from Tourette's Syndrome, removes himself, due to taunts from Boston Red Sox bleacher fans.
  • 1984 - Dave Kingman's fly ball never comes down (stuck in Metrodome ceiling).
  • 1985 - 111th Kentucky Derby: Angel Cordero Junior on Spend A Buck wins 2:00.2.
  • 1989 - Junior Felix of Toronto Blue Jays becomes 53rd to hit homerun on first at bat.
  • 1990 - Baltimore Orioles' player Gregg Olson sets relief pitcher record of 41 consecutive scoreless innings.

  • 1996 - ABC Bud Light Masters Bowling Tournament won by Ernie Schlegel.
  • 1996 - Greg Pavlik one-hits Detroit Tigers making the Texas Rangers first American League team to pitch back-to-back one-hitters since the Washington Senators in 1917.
  • 1997 - Phil Blackmar wins 50th Houston golf Open.
  • 1997 - Tammie Green wins LPGA Sprint Titleholders Championship.
  • 2002 - In Germany, BV Borussia Dortmund wins the Bundesliga title after a 2-1 victory over SV Werder Bremen.
  • 2008 - The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Montreal Canadiens 6-4 in Game 5 of the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs, eliminating Montreal and Canada's last hope for the Cup this season. A Canadian team has not won the Cup in 15 years.
  • 2008 - The Dallas Stars advance to the next round by defeating the San Jose Sharks 2-1 in Game six of Stanley Cup playoffs, in the 8th longest game in NHL history, with four overtime periods.
  • 2008 - Real Madrid wins a record 21st Spanish soccer league title, defeating Osasuna 2-1.
  • 2008 - The Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the New York Rangers 3-2 to win the Eastern Conference in Game 5 of their Stanley Cup series.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats San Francisco Giants by score 9-1.
  • 2022 - At Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Colorado Rockies beats Washington Nationals by score 5-2.

  • 1783 - William Herschel reports seeing a red glow near lunar crater Aristarchus.
  • 1967 - Lunar Orbiter 4 launched by US; begins orbiting Moon May 7.
  • 1979 - NASA launches Fltsatcom-2.
  • 1989 - US launches Magellan to Venus.
  • 1989 - US space shuttle STS-30 launched.

Extreme weather history:

  • 2003 - (to May 10) A severe weather outbreak spawns more tornadoes than any week in U.S. history; 393 tornadoes are reported in 19 states.
  • 2007 - Tornado strikes Greensburg, Kansas, killing at least 12 and destroying about 90 percent of the town.
  • 2010 - 13 inches of rain falls on Nashville, Tennessee, over two days, close to doubling the previous rainfall record. A levee protecting the southern park of the city is breached, causing parts of Nashville to be evacuated. 17 deaths are killed in Tennessee, mostly from drowning in flash floods.

USA history:

  • 1776 - Rhode Island declares independence from England.
  • 1817 - An explosion aboard the Constitution steamship on the Mississippi River near Bayou Sara scalds to death 11 people.
  • 1862 - Battle at Williamsburg, Virginia.
  • 1862 - US General George McClellan halts his troops before Yorktown, Virginia as it is full of armed torpedoes left by Confederate Brigadier General Gabrial Rains.
  • 1863 - Battle of Chancellorsville ends - Beaten USA army withdraws.
  • 1864 - General Ulysses Grant's Army at Potomac attacks at Rappahannock.
  • 1864 - USA General Ulysses S Grant crosses Rapidan River and begins his duel with Confederate General Robert E Lee.
  • 1865 - Battle of Citronville, Alabama; Richard Taylor surrenders.
  • 1865 - Battle of Mobile, Alabama.
  • 1865 - Abraham Lincoln, the 16th U.S. president, is buried in Springfield, Illinois.
  • 1878 - Phonograph shown for first time at Grand Opera House.
  • 1886 - Haymarket riot in Chicago, Illinois, USA; bomb kills 7 policemen.
  • 1896 - Grease fire ignites half ton of dynamite at Cripple Creek, Colorado, USA.
  • 1904 - Americans begin canal construction work in Panama. French properties in Panama are transferred to American authority.
  • 1916 - At request of US, Germany curtails its submarine warfare.
  • 1923 - New York state revokes Prohibition law.
  • 1927 - First balloon flight over 40,000 feet (Scott Field, Illinois, USA).
  • 1927 - Nicaragua agrees to a US-supervised presidential election in 1928.

  • 1968 - Robert Wallace, assistant secretary of the US Treasury, announces to the Metropolitan New York Numismatic Convention in New York City "The possibility of ever permitting them [silver coin hoarders and smelters] to reap windfall profits of millions of dollars at the expense of taxpayers will, to say the least, not be very popular".
  • 1970 - US National Guard kills four protesting students (Jeffrey Miller, Sandy Scheuer, Allison Krause, William Schroeder) at Kent State University in Ohio.
  • 1973 - First US TV network female nudity: Valerie Perrine in the PBS production of Steambath.
  • 1977 - The Space Mountain attraction opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland in California.
  • 1988 - A major explosion at an industrial solid-fuel rocket plant in Henderson, Nevada, causes damage extending up to 10 miles away, including Las Vegas's McCarran International Airport.
  • 1989 - US launches Magellan to Venus.
  • 1991 - Morris K Udall (Representative-Democrat-Arizona) resigns due to Parkinson disease.
  • 1998 - Astronaut Buzz Aldrin and Buzz Lightyear attend the re-opening of the Moonliner attraction in Disneyland, California. The original Moonliner was removed in 1966.
  • 1999 - The White House holds a ceremony launching the Sacagawea dollar program.
  • 2003 - (to May 10) A severe weather outbreak spawns more tornadoes than any week in U.S. history; 393 tornadoes are reported in 19 states.
  • 2003 - Top Thrill Dragster opens in Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio as the world's tallest, fastest roller coaster.
  • 2006 - A large meteor shower crosses over El Paso, Texas, USA.
  • 2007 - Executive Directive 51, which specifies the procedures for continuity of the federal government of the United States in the event of a "catastrophic emergency" is signed by President George W. Bush.
  • 2007 - Tornado strikes Greensburg, Kansas, killing at least 12 and destroying about 90 percent of the town.
  • 2010 - 13 inches of rain falls on Nashville, Tennessee, over two days, close to doubling the previous rainfall record. A levee protecting the southern park of the city is breached, causing parts of Nashville to be evacuated. 17 deaths are killed in Tennessee, mostly from drowning in flash floods.
