  • 1991 - Sierra On-Line announces The Sierra Network, a dial-up modem-accessed service for playing computer games with others.
  • 1996 - Apple licenses the Mac OS to IBM, which may sub-license it to other manufacturers.
  • 1998 - At the Flint Center Theater, Steve Jobs introduces the Apple Computer iMac computer. It features 233 MHz PowerPC G3 processor, 512 kB backside cache, 32 MB RAM, 4 GB EIDE hard disk, ATI Rage IIc with 2 MB SGRAM video, 15-inch built-in monitor, 66 MHz PCI system bus, 10/100 BaseT Ethernet, IrDA infrared port, 33.6 kbps modem, two USB ports, 24X CD-ROM drive, and Bondi Blue case. Price is US$1299.
  • 1998 - Apple Computer introduces the Macintosh PowerBook G3 portable computer. It features 233 to 292 MHz PowerPC 750 processor, 12.3-14.1-inch TFT display, 0-1 MB Level 2 cache, 32-192 MB SDRAM, 2-4 MB SGRAM video memory, 2-8 GB IDE hard drive, 20X CD-ROM drive, floppy drive, 10Base-T Ethernet, ATI Rage LT video controller, 16 bit stereo sound, 32-bit CardBus interface, external VGA output. Size if 12.7 x 10.4 x 2 inches; weight is about 7 pounds. The system runs for about three hours on lithium-ion batteries. Systems are custom built to customer specifications. This is the first Apple computer with new solid-colored Apple logo.
  • 2002 - In San Jose, California, the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference is held. Steve Jobs unveils the latest Mac OS version, code-named Jaguar, and the iChat software. QuickTime 6 and QuickTime Broadcaster are released to developers.
  • 2002 - Intel releases the 2.26, 2.4 and 2.53 GHz Pentium 4 processors, with 533 MHz front-side bus. Prices are US$423, US$562, and US$637, respectively.
  • 2003 - Apple Computer releases updated eMac computers. They feature 800 - 1 GHz G4 processor, 40 or 80 GB hard drive, 17-inch monitor.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1938 - The Mickey Mouse film Mickey's Trailer is released. Donald Duck and Goofy also appear.
  • 1940 - Walt Disney Studios completes its move to Burbank, California.
  • 1969 - Roger Broggie and Earl Vilmer of the Disney company arrange the purchase of five railroad engines in Yucatan, Mexico, for use in Walt Disney World. Price is US$32,750.
  • 1984 - The Disney Channel airs the Disney Channel Premiere Film Gone Are the Dayes.
  • 1985 - The Disney Channel premieres the Dumbo's Circus series.
  • 1987 - The City Council of Burbank, California, approves a Walt Disney Company proposed development of a theme park, studio attraction, hotel, and shopping mall on a 40-acre site in the city. Disney is granted two six-month options to purchase the property for US$1 million.
  • 1988 - The Norway pavilion opens in World Showcase in EPCOT Center at Walt Disney World. It includes the Flording shop, Puffin's Roost shop, Kringla Bakeri og Kafe restaurant, and the Restaurant Akershus restaurant.
  • 1989 - NBC airs the 100th episode of Disney's The Golden Girls TV show.
  • 1989 - The Disney Channel begins airing the show Teen Win, Lose or Draw.
  • 1990 - The NBC TV network airs The Magical World of Disney show, entitled The Muppets at Walt Disney World.
  • 1991 - Grenada issues eleven postage stamps depicting various Disney characters in Japanese festivals.
  • 1991 - Grenada Grenadines issues twelve postage stamps depicting various Disney characters demonstrating Japanese arts, crafts, and industries.
  • 1991 - The Walt Disney Company is first listed in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
  • 1992 - The Philadelphia Orchestra Association files a US$60 million lawsuit against the Walt Disney Company and Buena Vista Home Video, claiming their consent was not sought in releasing the film Fantasia on video and laserdisc.
  • 1995 - The ABC TV network airs the Disney movie Freaky Friday, a remake of the 1976 film.
  • 2001 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US.
    • The episode title I'm Goin' to Praiseland is a reference to the Disney-sponsored line "I'm going to Disneyland".
    • At a theme park, an attraction is called King David's Wild Ride, a reference to the Disneyland attraction Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.

  • 2009 - Stitch's SuperSonic Celebration officially opens in Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 2011 - The Disney Channel debuts the A.N.T. Farm show.
  • 2016 - Disney releases the Marvel Pictures film Captain America: Civil War in theaters in the USA. Available in regular format, 3-D, and IMAX.

  • 1970 - The Corvette assembly plant re-opens, with 1970 model production resuming.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Two warships escort Britain's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on a visit to Canada. Each ship carries about 15 million Pounds Sterling in gold for safekeeping in Canada.
  • 1941 - Josef Stalin replaces Molotov as prime minister (chairman of Council of People's Commissars).
  • 1941 - Iraqi forces outside British base at Habbaniya, Iraq, disperse.
  • 1941 - British Chief of Imperial General Staff General Dill proposes to Winston Churchill that Britain abandon the Middle East, concentrating all armored forces in England against possible invasion. Churchill is opposed to the idea.
  • 1942 - American Lieutenant General Jonathan Wainwright offers to surrender Corregidor, which is refused by Japanese general Masaharu Homma.
  • 1942 - (1400 hours) US General Jonathan Wainwright surrenders his 14,000 men on Corregidor to the Japanese, putting all of the Philippines under Japanese control.
  • 1943 - At Experimental Station Suffield, Alberta, Canada, a ten-day experiment begins testing the field performance of men burned with mustard gas.
  • 1943 - In Tunisia, Allied forces break through German defence lines in Medjez el Bab.
  • 1944 - Off Cape Race, Newfoundland, German submarine U-548 torpedoes Royal Canadian Navy frigate Valleyfield, sinking it.
  • 1945 - (morning) US 3rd Army captures Pilsen and Karlsbad.
  • 1945 - Karl Dönitz signs an order prohibiting demolitions in any occupied territories (part of Holland, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Norway).
  • 1945 - The Second White Russian Army capture Rügen Island, the German island seaplane base in the Baltic. 4660 Germans are taken prisoner.
  • 1945 - (1200 hours) Official surrender comes into effect of German Army Group G to the American 6th Army Group.
  • 1945 - German General Herman Niehoff signs the surrender of Breslau.

  • 1975 - The German Democratic Republic issues five postage stamps marking the 30th anniversary of liberation from fascism.

  • 1982 - Minoru Arakawa and Howard Lincoln of Nintendo of America meet with Coleco Industries and Universal Studios over the Donkey Kong and King Kong infringement issue.
  • 1995 - Nintendo of America announces its Ultra 64 game machine. It uses a 93.75 MHz MIPS R4300i processor manufactured by NEC with 16 kB instruction cache, 8 kB data cache, 64-bit integer and floating-point units, and 32-bit system interface. A 62.5 MHz Reality Coprocessor chip handles audio/video processing. Release target date is April 1996.
  • 1998 - Sony releases the Dual Shock controller for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 2003 - Konami releases the Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow video game for the Game Boy Advance in the US. Price is $29.99.
  • 2004 - Electronic Arts releases the Samurai Warriors video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US and Canada.
  • 2008 - Electronic Arts releases the Boom Blox video game for the Nintendo Wii in the USA and Canada.

USA coin history:

  • 1795 - Full-scale production of dollar coins (at illegal 0.900 fineness) begins at the Philadelphia Mint with a new more powerful press. About 4000 coins are struck.
  • 1886 - The US Senate confirms James P. Kimball as US Mint director.
  • 1936 - Congress authorizes production of 180,000 1936 California Pacific International Exposition half dollars.

  • 1937 - (1825 hours) Airship Hindenburg attempts landing at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey, USA. A sudden explosion and fire destroys the ship, killing 36 people. The Hindenburg was the largest rigid airship ever built; the largest aircraft of any type ever to fly. The US Department of Commerce official investigation finds the cause of the accident to be ignition of hydrogen and air, most likely set off by atmospheric discharge.
  • 1941 - At California's March Field, Bob Hope performs his first USO show.
  • 1942 - Corregidor surrenders to the Japanese, putting all of the Philippines under Japanese control.
  • 1959 - In Hollywood, California, the 11th Annual Emmy Awards are presented, hosted by Raymond Burr.

  • 1981 - A jury of architects and sculptors unanimously selects Maya Lin's design for the US Vietnam Veterans Memorial from 1,421 other entries.
  • 1985 - 17th Space Shuttle Mission (51-B)-Challenger 7 lands at Edwards Air Force Base.
  • 1986 - Donald E Pelotte becomes first native American bishop.
  • 1994 - US House of Representatives passes the assault weapons ban.
  • 1997 - Michael Jackson and Bee Gees inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
  • 2008 - In Jackson, Georgia, USA, convicted murderer William Earl Lynd is executed by lethal injection, at age 53. Lynd was convicted of killing Ginger Moore in December 1988.
  • 2010 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average suffers its biggest ever intraday point drop: 998.5 points. During the market's fall some shares briefly fell to nearly zero. By the end of the trading day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 347.80 points, or 3.20 percent, to 10,520.32. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 3.24 percent, to 1,128.15. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 3.44 percent, to 2,319.64.
