Personal computer history:

  • 1984 - Hewlett-Packard introduces the HP 110 laptop computer. It features 5.33 MHz 8086, 272 kB RAM, 384 kB ROM, flip-up LCD display displaying 80x16 text or 480x120 graphics, MS-DOS 2.11, and 300-bps modem. The ROM chip contains Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet, MemoMaker word processor, Infocom's Zork game, and a communications package. Weight is under 8.5 pounds; price is US$2995.
  • 1996 - Apple Computer halts PowerBook 5300 production and initiates a recall.
  • 2000 - Microsoft offers a package of restrictions on its business practices to the Department of Justice, in place of the proposed break-up of the company.
  • 2004 - Intel launches the Pentium M 735, 745, and 755, in speeds of 1.7, 1.8, and 2.0 GHz respectively. They feature 2 MB level 2 cache and 400 MHz front-side bus. The processors are manufactured in a 0.90-micron process. Code-name during development was Dothan.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1929 - Disney completes the first Silly Symphony film, The Skeleton Dance.
  • 1930 - Disney completes the Mickey Mouse film The Cactus Kid. Minnie Mouse also appears.
  • 1946 - The Pluto film In Dutch is released to theaters.
  • 1984 - Charles Cobb meets with Richard Rainwater and Sid Bass. They put together a proposal to sell Arvida to Disney for US$300 million in Disney stock.
  • 1984 - Richard Rainwater proposes the Arvida deal to Disney's representatives, who like the idea, but delay decision pending a review of Arvida.
  • 1996 - Disney releases the Touchstone film Boys to theaters in the USA.
  • 1996 - Maldives issues twenty postage stamps depicting Disney characters visiting China.
  • 2006 - The Tarzan stage show opens in the USA.
  • 2009 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA.
    • A girl starts to say "Snow White and the Seven..." when a lawyer says "the story you're about to tell is the copyrighted property of the Walt Disney Corporation".
    • Part of the show is a parody of Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, with seven dwarfs, song "Ho Hi" in place of "Heigh Ho", magic talking mirror, animals helping Snow White, Snow White lying under glass.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - (about 0030 hours) Foreign bombers over Basel, Switzerland, drop a few bombs on the city, as Swiss anti-aircraft guns fire on them.
  • 1940 - (between 0300-0400 hours) Adolf Hitler arrives at his bunker near Aachen, Germany, to direct operation Fall Gelb (Case Yellow), the attack on western Europe.
  • 1940 - German forces begin operation Sichelschnitt (Sickle Stroke), a surprise assault against Holland, Luxembourg, Belgium.
  • 1940 - (0400 hours) Fleets of Luftwaffe bombers and fighters take off to attack western Europe.
  • 1940 - (0400 hours) German parachute and airborne forces begin landing to secure key bridges in Holland at Rotterdam, Dordrecht, and Moerdijk, and in Belgium at Maastricht. Some parachutists are disguised as Netherland soldiers, farm boys, and Roman Catholic nuns.
  • 1940 - (0430) German planes begin bombing Antwerp, Belgium.
  • 1940 - (0450 hours Paris) Four German bombers drop bombs on Méry-sur-Oise, twenty miles from Paris, France.
  • 1940 - German Chancellor Adolf Hitler gives his Order of the Day to the German troops, saying "The fight beginning today decides the fate of the German nation for the next 1000 years.".
  • 1940 - (0530 hours) 76 German divisions cross a 175-mile front into Holland, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
  • 1940 - (0600 hours Berlin) German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop informs the foreign press that Germany had seized the initiative by anticipating Anglo-French aggression in the Ruhr area over Netherlands and Belgian territory. He presents evidence that Netherlands and Belgium were not acting as neutrals, that they were defending only on the German border, and allowing British and French assistance in attempting revolution in Germany. German forces in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg would ast as protectors and take steps to ensure their neutrality.
  • 1940 - (just after sun-up) Twenty-one 10-man DFS230 gliders descend over Dutch territory, having been pulled by Junker 52 transport planes from airfields near Cologne, Germany. Ten gliders land near key bridges, nine others landing on the roof of Belgium's Fort Eban Emael. Engineers quickly set explosive charges in gun barrels, casemates, and exit passages, sealing in the 650-man garrison.
  • 1940 - The government of the Netherlands declares a state of war with Germany.
  • 1940 - (0700-0800 hours) British and French troops enter Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands to counter the German attack.
  • 1940 - (0730 hours) The German ambassador to Belgium notifies the Belgian Foreign Minister of the invasion of the country. The response is protest, and announcement of resistance.
  • 1940 - The Belgian government calls on English and French troops to enter the country to aid in its defence.
  • 1940 - The Belgian Government declares Brussels an open city, with no troops defending it, and for no troops to pass through the city.
  • 1940 - British soldiers cross the North Sea, landing on the Netherlands coast at several points.
  • 1940 - The Netherland East and West Indies and Dutch Guiana formally declare the existence of a state of war with Germany. The Governor places the islands under martial law, and warns that any help from other nations would be rejected as unwelcome.
  • 1940 - 32 British Battles bombers attack German columns in Luxembourg. 13 planes are shot down; all others are damaged.
  • 1940 - British forces occupy Iceland.
  • 1940 - Switzerland orders general mobilization for defence for the following day, and declares a "precautionary state of war" as of midnight.
  • 1940 - Quote by French General Maurice-Gustave Gamelin: "Germany has engaged against us in a struggle to the death.".
  • 1940 - (early evening) Britain's Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain resigns.
  • 1940 - (1800 hours) At Buckingham Palace, London, England, King George VI asks Winston Churchill to form a new government.
  • 1940 - German forces complete overrunning Luxembourg, and taking Maastrich in the Netherlands, and Malmedy in Belgium.
  • 1940 - (2300 hours Paris) First major German air attacks on French objectives take place: air fields, railroads and stations, coal mines, and factories.
  • 1940 - (late) Germans airdrop reinforcements into Rotterdam, Netherlands.
  • 1940 - (midnight) British Prime Minister Winston Churchill completes the forming of his government. Clement Attlee is made Lord Privy Seal, Arthur Greenwood is made Minister Without-Portfolio. Anthony Eden is made Secretary of State for War. Sir Archibald Sinclair is made Air Secretary.
  • 1941 - (1745 hours) Rudolf Hess, Adolf Hitler's deputy, leaves Augsburg in a specially modified Messerschmitt-110, flies through the weakest section of British coastal radar, over an RAF base twice with no response, misses his landing spot and bails out over a farm south of Glasgow, breaks an ankle, and is captured by a farmer with a pitchfork.
  • 1942 - Mindanao surrenders to the Japanese on the Philippines.
  • 1943 - Canada's National Research Council head Chalmers Mackenzie tells Louis Mountbatten in England that the Habbakuk ice ship project could not be completed for 1944.
  • 1943 - Hans-Thilo Schmidt, employee of the German Defence Ministry's Cipher Center, is arrested for treason for giving information to the French (French intelligence officer General Gustave Bertrand) since October 1932. he had given information on the Enigma coding machine, other cryptography systems, and Göring's wiretapping agency.
  • 1945 - Over 400 US B-29 bombers based on the Mariana Islands make bombing raids on Japanese islands of Kyushu, Honshu, and Shikoku.
  • 1945 - In waters off Nova Scotia, Canada, German submarine U-889 surrenders to Royal Canadian Navy ships.
  • 1948 - Great Britain issues two postage stamps marking the 3rd anniversary of the liberation of the Channel Islands from German occupation.
  • 1969 - France issues a postage stamp marking the 25th anniversary of the Battle of the Garigliano against Germany.
  • 1990 - Marshall Islands issues two postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the bombing of Rotterdam and the invasion of Belgium.
  • 1995 - Algeria issues a 13d postage stamp marking VE Day at the end of World War II.
  • 2005 - Grenada issues ten postage stamps entitled "The Route to Victory", marking the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • 2005 - Grenada issues five postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of V-E Day.
  • 2005 - Grenada issues five postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of V-J Day.
  • 2005 - Grenada - Carriacou & Petite Martinique issues ten postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Video game history:

  • 1983 - Atari forms a joint venture with MCA Video Games, to create coin-operated video games, home video games, and computer software based on motion pictures, television, and other MCA properties.
  • 2000 - Universal Studios in California hosts the world-premiere showing of the Metal Gear Solid 2 video game for the PlayStation 2.
  • 2000 - At Sony Studios in Los Angeles, California, Sony announces initial pricing (US$299), American launch date (October 26), and further details of the PlayStation 2. There are likely to be 51 games available at launch, with Sony games to retail at US$49 each. The system will include one DualShock 2 controller. Extra controllers, 8 MB card, multitap attachment to cist US$34 each. The system will include DVD decoder in the chipset.
  • 2000 - Nintendo releases the Funtastic Series of Nintendo 64 consoles in semi-transparent cases: Watermelon, Ice, Jungle, Fire, Smoke, and Grape.
  • 2000 - In Los Angeles, California, the Electronic Entertainment Expo is held. Total attendance is 57,800.
  • 2002 - Triton Labs ships the Afterburner lighted flat-panel display kit for the Game Boy Advance in the US. Price is U$35.
  • 2004 - Microsoft holds a press conference in Los Angeles, California. A video is shown titled The Novice, with Donald Trump poking fun at fake Sony executives, and praising Microsoft executives for their online video game strategies. Microsoft announces it will release Halo 2 with multiplayer support on November 9. Electronic Arts announces it will begin including Xbox Live support in its games. Sale to date of the Xbox: 14 million.
  • 2004 - At the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California, the Dear Friends: Music from Final Fantasy concert is held, running for two hours, sponsored by Square Enix. Conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and Los Angeles Master Chorale performing fourteen songs composed by Nobuo Uematsu from the Final Fantasy video games.
  • 2005 - SNK releases the Metal Slug 4&5 video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2006 - In Los Angeles, California, the Electronics Entertainment Expo is held, over three days.
  • 2006 - At the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata says Nintendo is unlikely to produce a new version of the Game Boy Advance in the future.

Swedish history:

  • 1631 - Imperial forces storm the town of Magdeburg following a resisted siege. A large part (20,000) of the population is killed, and a large fire destroys much of the town. The incident is much publicized, leading to support for anti-Imperial forces.

USA coin history:

  • 1909 - The US Mint begins production of Lincoln cents for circulation.
  • 1920 - Congress authorizes commemorative coin marking 100th anniversary of Alabama joining the Union.
  • 1926 - Oregon Trail commemorative coin bill passes Senate unanimously.

Sports history:

  • 1870 - Jem Mace defends his heavyweight boxing crown against Irish champion Joe Coburn, it lasts one hour and 17 minutes, and neither is struck by a punch.
  • 1889 - 17th Preakness: W Anderson aboard Buddhist wins in 2:17.5.
  • 1893 - 19th Kentucky Derby: Eddie Kunze aboard Lookout wins in 2:39.25.
  • 1905 - 31st Kentucky Derby: Jack Martin aboard Agile wins in 2:100.75.
  • 1909 - Winchester's Fred Toney no-hits Lexington for 17 innings.
  • 1910 - 36th Kentucky Derby: Fred Herbert aboard Donau wins in 2:06.4.
  • 1913 - 39th Kentucky Derby horse race: Roscoe Goose aboard Donerail wins in 2:04.8.
  • 1913 - New York Yankees commit 8 errors and still beat Detroit Tigers 10-9 in ten innings.
  • 1919 - 45th Kentucky Derby: Johnny Loftus aboard Sir Barton wins in 2:09.8.
  • 1926 - 52nd Preakness: John Maiben aboard Display wins in 1:59.8.
  • 1929 - 55th Preakness: Louis Schaefer aboard Dr Freeland wins in 2:01.6.
  • 1929 - 64th British Golf Open: Walter Hagen shoots a 292 at Muirfield Gullane.
  • 1930 - Clarrie Grimmett takes 10 for 37 versus Yorkshire in cricket at Sheffield.
  • 1941 - 67th Preakness: Eddie Arcaro aboard Whirlaway wins in 1:58.8.
  • 1946 - Boston Red Sox win 15th straight, beating New York Yankees 5-4, Joe DiMaggio hits Grand Slam.
  • 1947 - 73rd Preakness: Doug Dodson aboard Faultless wins in 1:59.
  • 1953 - Betsy Rawls wins LPGA Sacramento Golf Open.
  • 1959 - New York Giants' Jim Hearn allows two runs against Pittsburgh Pirates, game is suspended, Hearn is released and charged with loss two months after his retirement.
  • 1959 - Joyce Ziske wins LPGA Howard Johnson Golf Invitational.
  • 1964 - Mickey Wright wins LPGA Squirt Ladies' Golf Open Invitational.
  • 1967 - Hank Aaron makes his only inside the park homerun (vs Jim Bunning).
  • 1970 - Betsy Rawls wins LPGA Dallas Civitan Golf Open.
  • 1970 - Atlanta Braves' Hoyt Wilhelm pitches in his 1,000th game, loses to Saint Louis Cardinals 6-5.
  • 1970 - Stanley Cup: Boston Bruins sweep Saint Louis Blues in four games.
  • 1973 - 27th NBA Championship: New York Knicks beat Los Angeles Lakers, 4 games to 1.
  • 1973 - 9th Mayor's Trophy Game, New York Mets beat New York Yankees 8-4.
  • 1973 - Stanley Cup: Montreal Canadiens beat Chicago Blackhawks, 4 games to 2.
  • 1974 - 7th ABA championship: New York Nets beats Utah Stars, 4 games to 1.
  • 1978 - Liverpool wins 23rd Europe Cup I.
  • 1979 - John McMullen becomes CEO of Houston Astros.
  • 1981 - Montréal Expos' Charlie Lee no-hits San Francisco Giants, 4-0.
  • 1981 - Amy Alcott wins LPGA Lady Michelob Golf Tournament.
  • 1987 - Jody Rosentha wins LPGA United Virginia Bank Golf Classic.
  • 1989 - FC Barcelona wins 29th Europe Cup II.

  • 2009 - In Bern, Switzerland, Russia defeats Canada to win gold in the championship game of the International Ice Hockey Federation.
  • 2009 - In Catalunya, Spain, round 5 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship is won by Jenson Button.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Colorado Rockies by score 9-2.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Seattle Mariners beats Philadelphia Phillies by score 5-4.

Space exploration history:

  • 1910 - Halley's Comet makes closest approach to Earth in 1910.
  • 1930 - First US planetarium opens (Adler-Chicago).
  • 1969 - Apollo 10 transmits first color pictures of Earth from space.
  • 1994 - An annular eclipse of the sun is visible across much of North America.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1931 - Golf ball size hail falls in Burlington, New Jersey, USA.
  • 1996 - A sudden storm engulfs Mount Everest with several climbing teams high on the mountain, leaving eight dead.

USA history:

  • 1776 - First issue of $1 notes, authorized by the Continental Congress.
  • 1797 - First US Navy ship, the United States is launched.
  • 1823 - First steamboat to navigate the Mississippi River arrives at Fort Snelling.
  • 1837 - Panic of 1837 begins, as US banks in New York refuse to pay out gold and silver in exchange for deposit notes; beginning of economic depression.
  • 1849 - Riot destroys Astor Place opera house in New York City (22 killed).
  • 1861 - US troops march on state militia in Saint Louis, Missouri.
  • 1862 - Battle of Plum Run Bend, Tennessee (Plum Point Bend).
  • 1862 - Norfolk, Virginia is captured by US forces. Merrimack commander Josiah Tatnall has ship set afire to destroy it.
  • 1863 - Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, CSA General, dies from wounds received at Chancellorsville.
  • 1864 - James Clay Rice, lawyer/USA Brigadier-General, dies in battle at age 34.
  • 1864 - Thomas Greeley Stevenson, USA Brigadier-General, dies at about age 27.
  • 1864 - Battles at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia.
  • 1864 - Skirmish at Ny River, Virginia.
  • 1865 - Confederate States of America President Jefferson Davis is captured by USA Cavalry in Irwinsville, Georgia.
  • 1869 - The final railroad spike is driven at Promontory Summit, Utah, completing the US Transcontinental Railroad.
  • 1876 - The US Centennial Exposition opens in Philadelphia's Fairmont Park.
  • 1908 - First official Mother's Day service is held, at the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, organized by Anna Jarvis.
  • 1916 - Disastrous fire in Ellendale, North Dakota.
  • 1919 - Race riot in Charleston, South Carolina, USA; two blacks killed.
  • 1924 - J Edgar Hoover appointed head of the FBI.
  • 1930 - First US planetarium opens (Adler-Chicago).

  • 1960 - US atomic submarine USS Triton completes first circumnavigation of globe under water.
  • 1967 - Stockholm Vietnam-Tribunal declares US aggression in Vietnam/Cambodia.
  • 1967 - US performs nuclear test at Nevada Test Site.
  • 1968 - Vietnam peace talks begin in Paris, France, between the US and North Vietnam.
  • 1969 - Apollo 10 transmits first color pictures of Earth from space.
  • 1969 - US troops begin attack on Hill 937/Hamburger Hill, Vietnam.
  • 1972 - US performs nuclear test at Nevada Test Site.
  • 1984 - International Court of Justice rules on US blockade of Nicaragua.
  • 1993 - Paul Cézanne's still life painting sells for US$28.6 million in New York City.
  • 1995 - 30th Academy of Country Music Awards: Reba McEntire wins.
  • 1996 - Two US Marine helicopters collide during joint US and British war games.
  • 2002 - FBI agent Robert Hanssen is sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for selling American secrets to Moscow for $1.4 million in cash and diamonds.
  • 2019 - The United States' 25 percent tariff hike on US$200 billion worth of Chinese imports takes effect.
