  • 1977 - A judge grants MITS' restraining order against Microsoft licensing 8080 BASIC, until July 8 or until the arbiter's determination is made.
  • 1998 - Microsoft receives a stay of the December 1997 court order, allowing Windows 98 to ship including Internet Explorer 4.
  • 2010 - Microsoft launches Microsoft Office 2010, including online versions for "cloud" computing.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1926 - Bard's Hollywood Theater in Los Angeles previews the 34th Alice Comedy film, Alice the Fire Fighter.
  • 1932 - The Mickey Mouse film Mickey's Revue is released to theaters. Pluto and Horace Horsecollar also appear. Goofy appears for the first time, with the name "Dippy Dawg".
  • 1956 - The Horseless Carriage (red) begins operation on Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland.
  • 1967 - Florida's Governor Claude Kirk signs legislation creating the Reedy Creek Improvement District, enabling Walt Disney Productions' operation of Walt Disney World.
  • 1984 - Disney executives spend the weekend viewing Arvida properties in Florida.
  • 1995 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Crimson Tide to theaters in the USA.
  • 1998 - Touchstone Home Video releases the film Playing God on videocassette.
  • 1998 - Hollywood Pictures Home Video releases the film Washington Square on videocassette.
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. A babysitter arrives at a home via umbrella, calling herself Susicalifragilistic, references to Disney's Mary Poppins film.
  • 2007 - Disney debuts a new kids' TV show, My Friends Tigger & Pooh. The show introduces a new character, Darby, a six-year-old girl.
  • 2007 - The Disney Magic cruise ship departs from Port Canaveral, Florida for a 14-day eastbound repositioning cruise to Barcelona, Spain, where it will begin Disney Cruise Line's first Mediterranean cruises.
  • 2009 - The Cannes film festival opens in France, with a preview of the Disney-Pixar 3D animation comedy film Up.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1963 - At the Marlboro raceway in Cumberland, Maryland, Richard Thompson races a Grand Sport Corvette to 3rd in class, 5th overall.
  • 2000 - (to May 13) The National Corvette Museum hosts the ZR-1 Gathering. Over 500 people attend.
  • 2006 - At the Reliant Park raceway in Houston, Texas, the Lone Star Grand Prix race is held, round two of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 1st in GT1 class and 2nd overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C6-R driven by Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT1 class and 3rd overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C6-R driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Turkey and Great Britain conclude a security pact.
  • 1940 - (early) British Royal Air Force planes bomb Essen and two other German towns.
  • 1940 - (just before dawn) German troops begin initial skirmishes with French troops in the Warndt sector, continuing throughout the day.
  • 1940 - (soon after dawn) Nine British Blenheim bombers attack a German column on the Maastricht - Tongres road. Seven planes are shot down.
  • 1940 - (morning) Five British Battles bombers attack bridges over the Albert Canal. They break one bridge, but four planes are shot down.
  • 1940 - (morning) Twenty-four British Blenheim bombers attack bridges and roads in Maastricht. Ten bombers are shot down.
  • 1940 - The Dutch Crown Princess and family embark on British destroyer Codrington from Ijmuiden. British cruisers Galatea and Arethusa take the Dutch gold reserve to England.
  • 1940 - German forces break through the Maastricht-Hasselt defence line in Belgium.
  • 1940 - Germans begin crossing the River Meuse on two undemolished bridges in the Maastricht region.
  • 1940 - A British Royal Navy battleship accidentally strikes anti-submarine trawler Ypres, sinking it. All eighteen crew members survive.
  • 1940 - (afternoon) In the Netherlands, German forces capture Harlingen on the North Sea, and occupy the northern provinces.
  • 1940 - Sweden begins nation-wide city blackouts.
  • 1940 - Italian Premier Benito Mussolini instructs the Chief of Army Staff and Under-Secretary of War to further perfect the western Alpine frontier defences.
  • 1940 - Spain's Foreign Ministry issues a communiqué reaffirming its policy of neutrality.
  • 1940 - Netherland troops recapture Waalhaven Airport and regain control of most of Rotterdam, forcing Germans to retreat south of the Maas River.
  • 1940 - (by nightfall) German 1st and 10th Panzer groups reach the east bank of the Meuse River at Sedan.
  • 1941 - A five-ship convoy of 295 tanks and 43 Hurricane fighter planes arrives at Alexandria from England, to aid in the defense of the Suez Canal. A sixth ship struck a mine in the Sicilian Narrows and sank.
  • 1942 - German submarine U-533 torpedoes Dutch freighter Leto off the Gaspé Peninsula of Canada, at the entrance to the St. Lawrence River.
  • 1942 - German submarine U-558 torpedoes and sinks Royal Navy anti-submarine trawler HMT Bedfordshire, on loan to the US Navy, off Cape Lookout, North Carolina, USA. There are no survivors.
  • 1942 - Extermination of Jews begins at Auschwitz.
  • 1942 - (night) In the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada, German submarine U-553 sinks merchant freighters Leto and Nicoya.
  • 1943 - German submarine U-89 under commander Dietrich Lohmann is lost with all hands (48 dead).
  • 1943 - German submarine U-186 under commander Siegfried Hesemann is lost with all hands (53 dead).
  • 1943 - German submarine U-456 under commander Max-Martin Teichert is lost with all hands (49 dead).
  • 1943 - (evening) 572 British bombers attack Duiburg, Germany, in the Ruhr. Over 1300 buildings are destroyed, damaging four of the Thyssen steel factories, 60 ships, and sinking 34 barges.
  • 1944 - The Soviet Red Army liberates the Crimea area.
  • 1944 - 935 US 8th Air Force bombers attack several fuel plants in central and eastern Germany. This results in a reduction of daily output from 5850 metric tons to 4820.
  • 1945 - (at dusk) A Japanese Kamikaze airplane hits the US battleship New Mexico, off Okinawa.
  • 1992 - Tonga/Niuafo'ou issues postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of World War II in the Pacific.
  • 2004 - Guernsey issues five postage stamps depicting scenes of D-Day.

Video game history:

  • 1982 - Arnold Greenberg of Coleco signs agreement with Universal to pay royalties on sales of Donkey Kong.
  • 1999 - Nintendo announces its next-generation console, code-named "Dolphin". It will use a 400MHz "Gekko" processor developed with IBM, based on the PowerPC processor.
  • 2003 - Before the E3 trade show, Microsoft announces Xbox plans, including a demo of Doom 3 and Halo 2.
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. A video arcade is shown in a castle.
  • 2005 - In a televised special on the MTV network in the US, Microsoft reveals the Xbox 360 video game system.

Swedish history:

  • 1809 - The constitutional committee of the riksdag begins work drafting a new constitution.
  • 1940 - Sweden begins nation-wide city blackouts.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1937 - The new 1c-25c coins for the year are issued.

USA coin history:

  • 1909 - The Philadelphia Mint strikes patterns of the Lincoln cent, without motto "In God We Trust".
  • 1920 - Congress passes Act authorizing striking of 1920- and 1921-dated half dollars commemorating the 300th anniversary of the landing of Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock.
  • 1951 - J.V. McDermott turns down offer of $5000 for his 1913 Liberty Head nickel.
  • 1965 - U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry H. Fowler approves the Bureau of the Mint to begin producing Peace design silver dollars dated 1964.
  • 1975 - Research Triangle Institute is awarded $107,706 contract to conduct comprehensive review of US coinage requirements to year 1990.
  • 1976 - World Wide Coin Investment sells its 1913 Liberty Head 5-cent to A-Mark Coin of Beverly Hills, California for US$135,000.

  • 1877 - Ottawa Rough Riders first outside competition versus Britannia.
  • 1888 - Crouching start for running race first used by Charles Sherrill of Yale.
  • 1890 - Louisiana, USA legalizes prize fighting.
  • 1909 - 34th Preakness: Willie Doyle aboard Effendi wins in 1:39.8.
  • 1913 - Harry Green runs world record marathon (2:38:16.2).
  • 1917 - 43rd Kentucky Derby: Charles Borel on Omar Khayyam wins in 2:04.6.
  • 1919 - New York Yankees and Washington Senators play second straight extra inning tie, 4-4 in 15 innings.
  • 1923 - 49th Preakness: Benny Marinelli aboard Vigil wins in 1:53.6.

  • 2004 - An American civilian contractor in Iraq, Nick Berg, is shown being decapitated by a group allegedly linked to al-Qaida on a web-distributed video.

  • 1870 - Manitoba becomes a province of Canada.
  • 1949 - West begins Berlin Airlift to get supplies around Soviet blockade.
  • 2008 - A 7.8-magnitude earthquake hits China's southwestern Sichuan province, killing about 70,000, injuring 300,000, leaving 5 milion homeless.
