  • 1984 - In Beijing, China, William Millard of Computerland and officials of the government sign a letter of intent to create a network for microcomputer systems in China.
  • 1996 - In Los Angeles, California, Bandai Digital Entertainment announces the Pippin @World computer. The device includes a keyboard and CD-ROM player. It can be hooked up to a television and connected to the Internet. Bandai expects to ship the device in September, priced at US$599.
  • 1997 - Exponential Technologies ceases development of PowerPC processors.
  • 1999 - Netscape Communications releases Communicator 4.6. New updates include RealNetworks' G2 multimedia player, and 56-bit DES encryption.
  • 2000 - In San Jose, California, the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference is held.
  • 2000 - At the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple Computer releases Mac OS X DR 4 (fourth developer release) to 4000 software developers.
  • 2002 - Intel releases the 1.7 GHz Celeron processor. It features 8 kB Level 1 data cache, 12 kB Level 1 instruction cache, 128 kB Level 2 cache, 400 MHz system bus, MMX, SSE, and SSE2 instructions, 64 GB address space, two pipelined FPUs. It incorporates 42 million transistors in a 0.18-micron process. Code-name during development was Willamette. Price is US$83 in 1000-unit quantities.
  • 2002 - Intel releases the 1.4 GHz Celeron processor. It features 100 MHz bus, 256 kB cache, 0.13-micron technology. Price is US$89 in 1000-unit quantities.
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A home personal computer and a portable laptop are used to access the World Wide Web.
  • 2009 - Venezuela issues 10 postage stamps depicting personal computers, promoting protection of children on the Internet.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1928 - Work is completed on the film Plane Crazy.
  • 1928 - Walt Disney's first silent film featuring Mickey Mouse, Plane Crazy premieres as a sneak preview at a theatre on Sunset Boulevard, in Los Angeles, California. It cost US$1772.89 to make. Minnie Mouse also debuts.
  • 1930 - The Mickey Mouse film The Cactus Kid is released. It stars Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Peg Leg Pete.
  • 1935 - The third Mickey Mouse Magazine is first published, priced at 10 cents.
  • 1937 - The Silly Symphony film Little Hiawatha is released to theaters.
  • 1937 - Republic Pictures Corporation releases the film Michael O'Halloran to theaters. An excerpt from the Mickey Mouse cartoon Puppy Love is shown.
  • 1977 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled Disney's Greatest Villains.
  • 1981 - Barbuda issues ten postage stamps depicting various Disney characters at sea.
  • 1984 - Ray Watson and Ron Miller have lunch with Sid Bass, who tries to convince the Disney executives that they have nothing to fear from doing business with him. Watson decides to proceed with the Arvida deal.
  • 1988 - The TV show Captain EO Backstage airs.
  • 1988 - The ABC TV network airs The Disney Sunday Movie, entitled Justin Case.
  • 1995 - The California Grill restaurant opens on the top floor of the Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World. Former name was Top of the World.
  • 1996 - Disney completes its purchase of 25 percent of the California Angels baseball team.
  • 1998 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film The Horse Whisperer to theaters in the USA.
  • 2003 - IMAX Corporation releases the animated feature film The Lion King to theaters in the Czech Republic.
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A child refers to Plutarch. The dad says "Mickey Mouse's dog?".
  • 2008 - Disney Interactive Studios formally launches DGamer, a free avatar-based community for U.S. buyers of Disney-developed Nintendo DS.
  • 2008 - The Walt Disney Pictures / Walden Media film The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian is released to theaters in Chile, Indonesia, Russia, Korea, and the Ukraine.
  • 2016 - The Amorette's Patisserie shop opens at the Disney Springs Town Center at Walt Disney World.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1953 - The General Motors Motorama show is on display in Dallas, Texas, over ten days.
  • 1971 - In Talladega, Alabama, a 200-mile car race is held.
    • Finishing 1st in GTO class and 1st overall is the Or Costanzo #57 1969 Corvette L-88 driven by Dave Heinz.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - (morning) French Premier Paul Reynaud phones British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, telling him, "We have been defeated; we have lost the battle".
  • 1940 - British Prime Minister Winston Churchill tells US President Franklin Roosevelt "I think myself the battle on land has only just begun."
  • 1940 - (about 1130 hours) In Rijsoord, a suburb village of Rotterdam, Netherlands, Commander in Chief of Netherlands land and sea forces General Henri Winkelman signs formal capitulation of Netherlands armed forces to Germany.
  • 1940 - The German Army begins a large attack across a 60-mile front of the River Meuse from Namur to Sedan.
  • 1940 - The British War Cabinet gives Bomber Command permission to bomb the Ruhr area of Germany, east of the Rhine river.
  • 1940 - (evening) German forces attack an Irish regiment holding a railroad station on the eastern edge of Louvain, successfully taking the position.
  • 1940 - (evening) French Premier Paul Reynaud calls Winston Churchill asking for all the troops and planes he can send. Churchill decides to go himself to assess the situation.
  • 1940 - (evening) French General Maurice-Gustave Gamelin orders a retreat of Allied forces in Belgium to the River Escaut, abandoning all central and eastern Belgium, including Antwerp and Brussels.
  • 1940 - (by nightfall) The German Army succeeds in crossing the Meuse in three places between Namur and Sedan.
  • 1940 - (evening) British bombing of German ground targets begins. 96 Wellington, Whitley, and Hampden bombers attack industrial targets east of the Rhine river. Only one plane is lost.
  • 1940 - (late) German army general headquarters issues a statement indicating that aerial reconnaissance has shown Brussels to be allowing troops to pass through, in contravention of a declaration of being an open city. The Allies are warned to cease this action, or Brussels would be subject to military action.
  • 1941 - In North Africa, British General Sir Archibald Wavell launches Operation Brevity, sending 26 Matilda tanks with the 22nd Guards Brigade against enemy positions at Sollum and Halfaya Pass along the Libya-Egypt frontier. The operation is successful, taking Halfaya Pass with the loss of seven tanks.
  • 1941 - At a diplomatic reception, a drunken Professor Karl Bömer, head of the Foreign Press Department, announces to diplomats and journalists that he was being promoted to Gauleiter of the Crimea, following the invasion of Russia on June 22.
  • 1941 - Soviet Defence Commissar Marshal Timoshenko and Chief of General Staff Georgi Zhukov submit a plan to Premier Josef Stalin for a land force of 152 divisions and 3000-4000 aircraft to destroy 100 German divisions in a pre-emptive strike in southern Poland. Stalin recognizes a lack of preparation for war, and refuses to sanction this or a general mobilization.
  • 1943 - German submarine U-176 under commander Reiner Dierksen is lost with all hands (53 dead).
  • 1943 - German submarine U-266 under commander Ralf von Jessen is lost with all hands (47 dead).
  • 1944 - (0900 hours) British General Bernard Montgomery holds the final dress rehearsal for Operation Overlord, at the St. Paul's School headquarters.
  • 1944 - The French Committee of National Liberation changes its name to Provisional Government of the Republic of France, under the leadership of Charles de Gaulle.
  • 1955 - In Vienna, Austria, the Austrian State Treaty is signed.
  • 1995 - Luxembourg issues two postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the liberation of concentration camps.

Video game history:

  • 1996 - In Los Angeles, California, Nintendo gives a preview of the Nintendo 64 game system, showing the Super Mario 64 and PilotWings video games.

  • 2002 - Microsoft reduces the price of the Xbox video game system to US$199 in the US, CDN$299 in Canada, and 24,800 yen in Japan (about US$195).
  • 2003 - Atari releases the Enter the Matrix video game for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube in the US. Price is US$49.99. The game is based on the Matrix film trilogy, and cost US$30 million to create. Atari ships four million copies on the first day.
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. In the lobby of a movie theater, a boy says "Instead of video games, they have weird free newspapers".
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A teacher says "... since the middle ages had no compact discs or Super Mario men...". A child plays a Game Boy in private school, and the teacher smashes it on the desk.
  • 2006 - The National Broadcasting Company airs The Apprentice TV show in the US. Two teams of job interview contestants create displays of the Xbox 360 video game system for use in a department store.
  • 2007 - Midway releases the Mortal Kombat: Armageddon video game for the Nintendo Wii in the US.
  • 2012 - Rockstar releases the Max Payne 3 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1470 - King Karl Knutsson dies.
  • 1668 - A private bank is taken over by the State, becoming the Riksbank, the first national bank in the world.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1899 - W.W.B. McInnes, son of T.R. McInnes, proposes to the House of Commons that a mint be established in Canada. After lengthy and careful attention, the scheme is turned down.
  • 1920 - Effective date of redesign of Canadian 1-cent coin.
  • 1967 - The US Department of Trade & Commerce imposes an export ban on silver, to cease an accelerating demand on its supplies.

USA coin history:

  • 1903 - US Treasury Department purchases 250,000 ounces of silver for the San Francisco Mint.
  • 1936 - Congress authorizes 1936 Wisconsin Centennial commemorative half dollar.
  • 1936 - Congress authorizes 1936 Bridgeport, Connecticut, Centennial commemorative half dollar.
  • 1936 - Congress authorizes 1936 Delaware Tercentenary commemorative half dollar.
  • 1965 - US President Lyndon Johnson announces the start of resumed silver dollar production.
  • 1965 - The Denver Mint begins production of 1964-dated Peace silver dollars, intended for circulation.
