  • 1994 - Iran issues a 50 rial postage stamp for World Telecommunications Day, depicting a personal computer.
  • 2000 - Number Nine Visual Technology ceases operations. The company sold most of its assets to S3 in 1999 duing bankruptcy reorganization.
  • 2001 - The DVD+RW Alliance announces the addition of DVD+R write-once capabilities to the standard.
  • 2002 - Indonesia issues a 1000 rupiah postage stamp for a telecommunications issue, depicting a computer screen and system tower.
  • 2004 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US.
    • A personal computer appears in a newspaper business: system unit, monitor, and keyboard.
    • A laptop computer with external mouse is shown in a house, hooked up to the Internet, showing a Web page receiving "hate Spam".

  • 2009 - Morocco issues a 7.80-dirham postage stamp depicting a computer keyboard and monitor.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1925 - M.J. Winkler Productions debuts the Alice Comedy film Alice's Egg Plant in New York City at the Rivoli Theater.
  • 1940 - The Donald Duck film Bill Posters is released to theaters. Goofy also appears.
  • 1941 - An anonymous memo at the Disney studios informs the 1200 employees that only qualified "artists" would be eligible for representation and continued job security.
  • 1962 - Buena Vista releases Disney's live-action feature film Bon Voyage to theaters. The film is based on the book by Marrijane and Joseph Hayes.
  • 1964 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Disneyland Goes to the World's Fair.
  • 1984 - The Disney board of directors votes its approval of the Arvida deal.
  • 1986 - The Circle-Vision film American Journeys opens in Tomorrowland at Tokyo Disneyland.
  • 1987 - The Mickey's Christmas Chalet shop in Disneyland closes.
  • 1991 - Disney's Port Orleans Resort hotel opens in Walt Disney World. It has 1008 guest rooms. It includes Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory food court, Jackson Square Gifts and Desires shop, and Bonfamille's Cafe restaurant.
  • 1991 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film What About Bob? to theatres.
  • 1997 - The Mike Fink Keel Boats ride at Disneyland closes.
  • 2004 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A car wash place is called "When you Wash Upon a Car", a reference to the song "When You Wish Upon a Star" from Disney's Pinocchio film.
  • 2004 - The Artist's Palette restaurant opens at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa at Walt Disney World.
  • 2009 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA.
    • A house carried by balloons floats across the sky, a reference to the 2009 Disney/Pixar film Up.
    • A character says "I am afraid of xylophones. It's the music you hear when skeletons are dancing.", a reference to Disney's film The Skeleton Dance.

  • 2013 - The Archive Shop opens in Mystic Point in Hong Kong Disneyland.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1954 - Chevrolet Engineering work order 19049 M.S. #1 cancels the 2-barrel V8 for Corvette, making the 4-barrel the base V8 engine for Corvette.
  • 1981 - At the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Harrisburg, North Carolina, the Goody's 500 / CRC Chemicals Trans-Am Championship - Round 1 race is held.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Sweden, Norway, and Finland reject Germany's nonaggression pact offers.
  • 1940 - The French 4th Armored Division under command of Colonel Charles de Gaulle attacks German tank forces at Montcornet, but have little impact on the German advance.
  • 1940 - Twelve British Blenheim bombers attack advancing German columns near Gembloux. Eleven planes are shot down.
  • 1940 - The Belgian Government moves the capital from Brussels to Ostend on the coast.
  • 1940 - German forces break through the French land defence lines along a 62-mile front, from Maubeuge to Carignon, near Sedan.
  • 1940 - German forces in Belgium continue westward in Belgium, advancing to Brussels, capturing the city by the evening.
  • 1940 - German troops capture Louvain and Malines after heavy fighting.
  • 1940 - The Swedish government forbids all sailors on foreign vessels to leave their ships while in Swedish ports.
  • 1940 - In the Cairo Museum in Egypt, the gold sarcophagus of Tut-ankh-Amen and other treasures are moved to a secret underground bombproof vault.
  • 1940 - German panzers reach the Serre River in France, then stop.
  • 1940 - By nightfall, German 10th Panzer Division seizes a bridgehead across the Oise River near Moy, France, 70 miles west of Sedan.
  • 1940 - (evening) General Maurice Gustave Gamelin gives the order of the day to the French armies, telling them "The fate of our country and that of our Allies and the destiny of the world depend on the battle now being fought.".
  • 1940 - (evening) British Hampden bombers make their first attack on Hamburg, Germany, with 48 planes suffering no losses in attacking oil refineries and gasoline depots.
  • 1941 - Adolf Hitler issues Directive No. 29, noting that the defence of Greek territory will be an Italian responsibility.
  • 1943 - German submarine U-128 under commander Hermann Steinert is lost with 7 dead of 54 crew.
  • 1943 - German submarine U-646 under commander Heinrich Wulff is lost with all hands (46 dead).
  • 1943 - German submarine U-657 under commander Heinrich Göllnitz is lost with all hands (47 dead).
  • 1944 - Dwight Eisenhower selects June 5 as tentative D-Day for Operation Overlord.
  • 1944 - German paratroops at Cassino withdraw.
  • 1945 - German submarine U-234 docks at Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The two Japanese officers are not present, having committed suicide with burial at sea. Both dismantled ME-262 jet fighters are missing, as is the uranium oxide in gold-lined containers. In total, 70 tons of cargo is unaccounted for.

Video game history:

  • 1989 - In New York, Tengen holds a reception for retailers, trade representatives, and press for the launch of the Tetris video game cartridge.
  • 1990 - Lewis Galoob Toys seeks a court declaration that the Game Genie does not infringe on Nintendo's copyrights.
  • 2001 - The Electronic Entertainment Expo is held in Los Angeles, California, over three days. Total attendance is 62,000. Microsoft unveils the Xbox video game system. Nintendo unveils the GameCube video game system.
  • 2004 - J.C. Padilla scores 2,181,619,994,299,256,480 (2 quintillion) on Giga Wing 2 on the Dreamcast, setting a record for the highest score on any game.
  • 2005 - Nintendo holds a press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. The company reports that two billion software titles have been sold since Nintendo entered the video game industry. Nintendo announces its online strategy for the Nintendo DS: Wi-Fi Internet connectivity with partner GameSpy. The Game Boy Micro is unveiled, with lighted color display; size is 2 x 4 x 0.7 inches, weight is 2.8 ounces; this is the smallest cartridge-based video game system ever. Some details of the Revolution video game system: it features proprietary DVD-size disc and GameCube disc play, 512 MB flash memory, SecureDigital slot, wireless controllers, virtual console play of NES, SNES and Nintendo 64 games by download; a Wi-Fi network is planned.
  • 2011 - Rockstar Games releases the L.A. Noire video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1814 - Norway proclaims a new constitution, and elects Danish Governor Christian Frederick as King of Norway.
  • 1928 - (to August 12) The 9th Olympic Games are held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Sweden wins 7 gold, 6 silver, and 12 bronze medals.
  • 2004 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. When two kids believe they will be sold to be used as crash test dummies, one says "Oh please let it be Volvo", a reference to Volvo's excellent safety record.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1910 - A proclamation sets the designs for the 1c-50c coins, effective May 21, 1910.
  • 1932 - An Order in Council prohibits the export of gold coins.

USA coin history:

  • 1926 - Congress authorizes Oregon Trail Memorial commemorative half dollar program, allowing up to 6 million coins be produced or until the law is repealed.
  • 2007 - The US Mint releases the 2007 John Quincy Adams Presidential dollar to circulation.

  • 1875 - First Kentucky Derby: Oliver Lewis aboard Aristides wins in 2:37.75.
  • 1881 - 7th Kentucky Derby: Jim McLaughlin aboard Hindoo wins in 2:40.
  • 1894 - 19th Preakness: Fred Taral aboard Assignee wins in 1:49.25.
  • 1895 - W G Grace completes his 100th 100 in cricket versus Somerset at Bristol, England.
  • 1903 - Cleveland Naps beat New York Highlanders 9-2 in Columbus, Ohio.
  • 1905 - Waseda University of Tokyo defeats Los Angeles High School 5-3 in baseball.
  • 1911 - 36th Preakness: Eddie Dugan aboard Watervale wins in 1:51.

  • 1995 - Shawn Nelson, 35, goes on a tank rampage in San Diego, California.
  • 2004 - Massachusetts legalizes same-sex marriage in compliance with a ruling from the state's Supreme Judicial Court (Goodridge v. Department of Public Health).
