Since 1995, I have been collecting information on a variety of topics, creating several timelines of history. Personal computer history:

  • 1983 - Texas Instruments announces that poor sales of TI 99/4A computers, software, and peripherals would result in a second quarter loss of US$100 million.
  • 1985 - Lotus Development completes its acquisition of Software Arts, and announces it has decided to end production of Visicalc.
  • 1986 - IBM and Microsoft sign a Joint Development Agreement on operating system software development.
  • 2002 - Palm announces it has shipped Palm OS 5 to developers.
  • 2002 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the 1.8 GHz Athlon XP 2200+ processor, based on a 0.13-micron process. Price is US$241 in 1000-unit quantities. Code-name during development was Thoroughbred.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1929 - The first "Sily Symphony" short film, The Skeleton Dance is first shown at the Carthay Circle Theatre.
  • 1955 - Disney releases the Goofy film El Gaucho Goofy to theaters. It was originally part of the film Saludos Amigos.
  • 1958 - Disney releases the 11th People and Places film, Wales, to theaters.
  • 1960 - The Rainbow Ridge Pack Mules ride at Disneyland re-opens as Pack Mules Through Nature's Wonderland.
  • 1984 - Stanley Gold and Frank Wells meet with Ron Miller and Ray Watson to propose a family collaboration in a leveraged buyout of Disney. Watson does not go for the idea.
  • 1984 - Disney negotiates an agreement to pay US$325.5 million (US$77.50 per share) for Steinberg's stock in the company - US$31.7 million over the stock's current worth - plus US$28 million for Steinberg's expenses.
  • 1988 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Big Business to theaters in the US.
  • 1991 - Lesotho issues ten postage stamps depicting various Disney characters in Japan.
  • 1995 - Disney premieres the animated feature film Pocahontas in Central Park, New York. This is Disney's first animated film based on historical fact.
  • 1998 - The BET Soundstage Club opens at Downtown Disney Pleasure Island at Walt Disney World.
  • 1998 - Comedy Central airs the South Park TV show in the USA. A map of Vietnam includes "Futureland" showing a building looking like Disneyland's Space Mountain, as well as three other "lands".
  • 2014 - ABC Family premieres the Chasing Life series.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1972 - In Le Mans, France, the 24 Hours of Le Mans race is held.
    • Finishing 7th in GT class and 15th overall is Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing Team #4 Corvette 427 driven by Dave Heinz and Bob Johnson.
    • The John Greenwood Racing #28 Corvette driven by Dick Smothers, John Greenwood, and Alain Cudini sets a Mulsanne straight-away record of 210-220 mph and leads GT class until a piston fails.
    • The John Greenwood Racing #72 Corvette driven by Bernard Darniche, Alain Cudini, and John Greenwood races until a cylinder head joint fails.
    • The Ecurie Léopard #71 1968 L-88 Corvette driven by Jean-Claude Aubriet, Depnic, and Sylvain runs as high as 20th place, but a cylinder head joint fails after 18 hours.
    • The Greder Racing Team #29 Corvette driven by Henri Greder and Marie-Claude Beaumont races until an accident takes it out.

  • 1979 - At the Portland International Raceway in Portland, Oregon, the G.I. Joe's Rose Cup Trans-Am Championship - Round 3 race is held.
    • Finishing 2nd in category II and 2nd overall is the Automotive Enterprises #27 Corvette driven by Rich Sloma.
    • Finishing 1st in category I and 4th overall is the #91 Corvette, driven by Gene Bothello.
    • Finishing 2nd in category I and 5th overall is the #92 Corvette, driven by Gary Carlen.
    • Finishing 4th in category I and 8th overall is the #43 Corvette, driven by Frank Joyce.

    • Finishing 7th is the Whelen Engineering #31 Corvette, driven by Sonny Whelen.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - The war in Norway ends.
  • 1940 - The French government and Army High Command leave Paris for Tours.
  • 1940 - Italy declares war on England and France.
  • 1940 - Italian planes make a bombing raid on Malta in the Mediterranean.
  • 1940 - American President Franklin Roosevelt gives a speech at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. In the speech he condemns Italy for striking "a dagger into the back of its neighbor". Roosevelt says the US will extend resources to opponents of force, and will build up equipment and trained forces for defence and emergencies.
  • 1940 - Fifteen Blackburn Skua planes from British carrier Ark Royal attack German ships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau at anchor in Trondheim Fjord, Norway. Only one plane scores a hot, but the bomb fails to explode. Eight planes are shot down.
  • 1942 - Free French forces under Brigadier General POierre Joenig abandon Bir Hacheim, about 50 miles southwest of Tobruk.
  • 1942 - German troops destroy the village of Lidice in Czechoslovakia, in retribution for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. The men are killed, the women taken to internment camps, and children taken to be raised by German families. The city is burned to the ground, 400 graves are dug up, and new roads are built.
  • 1943 - The British Air Ministry sends the "Pointblank" directive to Bomber Command head Arthur Harris, giving him freedom to continue destruction of Germany's major towns. However, the primary focus when weather permits is to attack targets identified at the Casablanca conference. German fighter force and related industry are a high priority because of the American intention to begin daylight bombing.
  • 1943 - Canada's National Research Council head Chalmers Mackenzie informs British Prime Minister Winston Churchill that the Habbakuk ice ship project can not be done. Churchill refuses to face that reality, and establishes another committee to investigate use of other materials.
  • 1944 - In the town of Oradour-sur-Clone near Limoges, France, German SS units lock men in barns, women and children in a church, fire machine-guns on both, then set fire to them. About 1000 are killed; only six escape. This was done to deter the population from helping the Maquis.
  • 1945 - Soviet Premier Josef Stalin gives permission for political parties to re-form in the Soviet-controlled zone of Germany.
  • 2003 - Russia issues a postage stamp to mark the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Kursk.

Video game history:

  • 1992 - Capcom releases the Street Fighter II Championship Edition arcade video game in the US.
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. A handheld video game system appears, like the Nintendo Game Boy, but called "FUN BOY". An arcade video game machine appears, as an example of "fun". A video game arcade building appears.

Swedish history:

  • 1523 - Council approves the demands of Lübeck for payments and trade privileges.
  • 1947 - Saab introduces its first car, the Saab 92. It features front-wheel drive, two doors, green paint.
  • 1956 - (to June 17) The Equestrian games of the 16th Olympic Games are held in Stockholm, due to host country Australia's animal quarantine laws.
  • 2020 - Swedish police investigators announce conclusion that Prime Minister Olof Palme's 1986 assassin was Stig Engstrom. As Engstrom died in 2000, the case is now closed.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1857 - An act receives royal assent to put the Province of Canada on the decimal (dollar) system of currency, requiring all accounts be kept in dollars and cents. It is to come into effect January 1, 1858.
  • 1982 - Striking of 1982 commemorative nickel dollars begins.

USA coin history:

  • 1866 - The Philadelphia Mint begins production of copper-nickel 3-cent coins.
  • 2008 - The US Mint reveals it is paying $12 million in contracts to three marketing firms to promote use of dollar coins in circulation.
  • 2013 - The US Mint releases the 2013 America the Beautiful - Great Basin National Park quarter dollar coin to circulation.

Sports history:

  • 1868 - Second Belmont Stakes, General Duke wins.
  • 1880 - Charlie Jones is first to hit two home runs in one inning.
  • 1892 - Wilbert Robinson of Baltimore Orioles sets baseball record of 7 for 7 in 9-inning game.
  • 1921 - Babe Ruth becomes all-time home run champion with number 120 (Gavvy Cravath).
  • 1934 - Italy beats Czechoslovakia 2-1 (overtime) in soccer's second World Cup at Rome.
  • 1944 - Joe Nuxhall at age 15 becomes youngest Major League baseball player.
  • 1952 - Chicago White Sox player Sam Mele is 6th to get six RBIs in an inning (4th).
  • 1956 - (to June 17) The Equestrian games of the Games of the XVI Olympiad are held in Stockholm, due to host country Australia's animal quarantine laws.
  • 1959 - Rocky Colovito hits four home runs in one game.
  • 1962 - A record 54 home runs hit in Major League Baseball.
  • 1962 - Igor Ter-Ovanesyan of USSR sets long jump record at 27 feet 3.25 inches.
  • 1966 - Cleveland Indians' Sonny Siebert no-hits Washington Senators, 2-0.
  • 1978 - New York Yankees trade Ken Holzman for Ron Davis.
  • 1979 - Baltimore Orioles pull their 8th triple play (5-4-3 versus Cleveland Indians).
  • 1981 - Pete Rose ties Stan Musial's National League record of 3,630 hits.
  • 1981 - Sebastian Coe of England sets the 800m record (1:41.73) in Florence, Italy.
  • 1984 - Ivan Lendl wins the French Open, his first grand slam title.
  • 1984 - Zhu Jian Hua of China high jumps a record 2.39 metres.
  • 1984 - Boston Celtics beat Los Angeles Lakers, for the NBA championship.
  • 1986 - A Bartlett Giamatti becomes president of baseball's National League.
  • 1989 - Major French Open upset, as Spain's Arantxa Sanchez, 17 beats heavily Steffi Graf, also first Spaniard to win a grand slam title.
  • 1990 - Detroit Pistons beat Portland Trail Blazers for first time since 1974 in Portland, Oregon.
  • 1996 - The Colorado Avalanche win their first Stanley Cup in their first season based out of Denver, Colorado, defeating the Florida Panthers four games to none. Avalanche captain Joe Sakic wins the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff Most Valuable Player.
  • 1998 - The 1998 FIFA World Cup begins in France.
  • 2000 - The New Jersey Devils defeat the defending champion Dallas Stars 2-1 in double overtime in Game six of the 2000 Stanley Cup Finals to win their second Stanley Cup Championship.
  • 2010 - The Chicago Blackhawks defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 in overtime to win the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup, their first cup win in 49 years.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Los Angeles Dodgers by score 7-2.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Boston Red Sox beats Seattle Mariners by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At Petco Park in San Diego, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Diego Padres beats Colorado Rockies by score 9-0.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: New York Mets beats Los Angeles Angels by score 7-3.

  • 2010 - The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency successfully deploys their solar sail, Ikaros, in orbit, as a demonstration of the principle of using sunlight as a simple and efficient means of propulsion.
  • 2021 - An annular solar eclipse is visible from Canada, Greenland, the North Pole, and the Russian Far East.

  • 1682 - Tornado in Connecticut uproots a 3-foot diameter oak tree.

USA history:

  • 1776 - Continental Congress appoints a committee to write a Declaration of Independence.
  • 1801 - Tripoli declares war on US for refusing tribute.
  • 1809 - First US steamboat to a make an ocean voyage leaves New York for Philadelphia.
  • 1840 - Senator Daniel Webster of Massachusetts introduces a resolution in the US Senate to reduce postal rates and for issuance of postage stamps to prepay postage.
  • 1863 - Battle of Brice's Crossroads, Mississippi; Forrest with 3500 defeats 8000 Federal troops.
  • 1898 - US Marines land in Cuba, during Spanish-American War.
  • 1899 - The Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks forms in Cincinnati, Ohio.
  • 1905 - First forest fire lookout tower placed in operation, Greenville, Maine, USA.
  • 1908 - First flying club, Aeronautical Society of New York, opens.
  • 1924 - First political convention broadcast on radio: Republicans at Cleveland, Ohio.
  • 1932 - First demonstration of artificial lightning, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, USA.

  • 1980 - A Unabomber bomb injures United Airlines president Percy Wood in Lake Forest, Illinois.
  • 1981 - The Reagan administration requests authorization from Congress to sell silver beginning in October to help balance the federal budget.

  • 2003 - NASA begins its Mars Exploration Rover mission by launching Spirit Rover.
