Personal computer history:

  • 1979 - A group of programmers (Al Vezza, Joel Berez, Marc Blanc, and Dave Lebling) from the Dynamic Modeling Group at Massachusettes Institute of Technology incorporates InfoCom.
  • 1982 - Bill Gates hires James Towne, a manager from Tektronix, as first president of Microsoft, effective July 6.
  • 1982 - Xerox introduces the 820-II computer, an update of the 820. Price is US$3295.
  • 1992 - US President George Bush presents Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates with the National Medal of Technology.
  • 1996 - id Software releases the Quake game for personal computers in the USA.
  • 1999 - Lotus Development releases SmartSuite Millenium Edition Release 9.5. Standard price is US$399, upgrade price is US$149.
  • 2000 - Microsoft unveils plans for implementing its ".Net" technology platform.
  • 2005 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the film Herbie Fully Loaded to theaters in the US. A computer and MultiSync LCD monitor appear. An HP laptop computer appears.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1931 - Disney completes the Silly Symphony film The Busy Beavers.
  • 1938 - It is suggested that Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea be turned into a dream adventure for Mickey Mouse.
  • 1938 - Walt Disney receives an honorary Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University.
  • 1938 - Walt Disney receives an honorary Master of Arts degree from Harvard University.
  • 1955 - Buena Vista generally releases the film Lady and the Tramp to theaters in the US.
  • 1970 - David R. Smith, a bibliographer at the University of California in Los Angeles, is hired to establish the Walt Disney Archives.
  • 1971 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film Scandalous John to theaters. The film is based on the book by Richard Gardner.
  • 1977 - Disney releases the live-action short film A Tale of Two Critters to theaters.
  • 1977 - Buena Vista releases the animated feature film The Rescuers to theaters. This is the last animated film made by the original generation of Disney lead animators. It cost US$7 million to make.
  • 1984 - Roy Disney makes a deal with Disney, in which he, Stanley Gold, and Peter Dailey would join the board of directors. As part of the deal, Donn Tatum and Card Walker would have to resign from the executive committee. Roy would also be made vice-chairman.
  • 1984 - A California state court temporarily bars Saul Steinberg from spending his US$325.5 million from Disney until a hearing on July 5.
  • 1985 - The Videopolis attraction opens in Fantasyland at Disneyland. It is a 5000 square foot outdoor dance amphitheater with music videos playing on 70 monitors.
  • 1988 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures animated and live-action feature film Who Framed Roger Rabbit? to theaters. It cost US$50.6 million to make, and another US$30 million for marketing. This film marks the first-ever on-screen meeting of Donald Duck and Daffy Duck. The film is based on the book Who Censored Roger Rabbit? by Gary Wolf.
  • 1989 - Disney announces that it has adopted a stockholders' rights plan to protect the company from being acquired in a hostile takeover. The plan would allow shareholders to buy additional shares at half price, set to take effect if anyone acquires more than 25 percent or begins a tender offer.
  • 1990 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Betsy's Wedding to theaters.
  • 1994 - Disney releases the film Heidi on laserdisc for US$40.
  • 1994 - Disney releases the film Iron Will on laserdisc for US$40.
  • 1997 - The film Hercules has its California premiere at Cal Arts in Los Angeles.
  • 2005 - Disney releases the live-action feature film Herbie: Fully Loaded in theaters in the USA.
  • 2008 - The ABC Family TV network airs the Disney Channel Original Movie Camp Rock.
  • 2012 - Disney releases the Pixar 3-D animated film Brave to theaters in the USA. Working title was The Bear and the Bow.
  • 2016 - Disney releases The BFG film to theaters in Sweden.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1986 - In West Palm Beach, Florida, an IMSA Camel Grand Prix race is held. Finishing 1st in GTP class is the Hendrick Motorsports Corvette GTP, driven by Doc Bundy and Sarel ven der Merwe.
  • 2000 - In Bloomington, Illinois, the 28th annual Bloomington Gold / Corvettes USA meet is held. Auction highlights include:
    • 1965 fuel injected convertible with 1500 miles and knockoffs: US$115,000 bid not accepted;
    • 1968 blue convertible with L88 engine: US$100,000;
    • 1957 fuel injected automatic black convertible: US$71,500;
    • 1957 fuel injected 3-speed black convertible: US$72,000;
    • 1962 fuel injected silver convertible: US$70,250;
    • 1965 fuel injected convertible: US$71,000;
    • 1965 fuel injected maroon 396/425 engine: US$71,500;
    • 1967 427/435 engine coupe: US$82,000;

  • 2002 - At the Watkins Glen International raceway in Watkins Glen, New York, round 4 of the Grand-Am Cup is held.
    • Finishing 2nd in GSI class and 2nd overall is the Powell Motorsport #11 Corvette, driven by Devon Powell and Doug Goad.
    • Finishing 9th in GSI class and 9th overall is the Powell Motorsport #02 Corvette, driven by Michael Weinberg and Stuart Hayner.
    • Finishing 12th in GSI class and 28th overall is the Gilbert Racing #55 Corvette, driven by James McAndrew and Rain Pilve.
    • Finishing 13th in GSI class and 29th overall is the Planet Earth Motorsports #43 Corvette, driven by Joe Nonnamaker and Shane Lewis.

  • 2003 - At the Watkins Glen International raceway in Watkins Glen, New York, Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen race is held, round six of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTS class and 14th overall is the Team Re/Max Racing #05 Corvette, driven by Rick Carelli, John Metcalf, and David Liniger.
    • Finishing 4th in GTS class and 21st overall is the ICY / SL Motorsports #06 Corvette, driven by Paul Alderman, Steve Lisa, and David Rosenblum.

  • 2003 - At the Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California, round five of the Trans-Am Series for the BFGoodrich Tires Cup is held.
    • Finishing 5th is the Megatech/Kit Car Wax #01 Corvette, driven by Kane Scott.
    • Finishing 8th is the Derhaag Motorsports #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.
    • Finishing 10th is the ROH Wheels #06 Corvette, driven by Joey Scarallo.
    • Finishing 11th is the Trenton Forging #2 Corvette, driven by Stuart Hayner.
    • Finishing 14th is the Derhaag Motorsports #59 Corvette, driven by Simon Gregg.
    • In 19th place, but not finishing the race, is the Revolution Motorsports #10 Corvette, driven by Bobby Sak.

  • 2005 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the film Herbie Fully Loaded to theaters in the US. A black C6 Corvette races neck-and-neck against Herbie, a 1963 Volkswagen, barely beating it. A silver C5 Corvette appears.
  • 2006 - Columbia Pictures releases the film Click to theaters in Australia and Puerto Rico. A red 2005 Corvette Convertible appears briefly.

World War II history:

  • 1938 - The German government initiates civil defense measures.
  • 1940 - France formally surrenders to Germany. The signing ceremony is held in the Forest de Compiègne, in the same rail car in which Germany had surrendered to France in 1918. General Charles Huntziger signs for France. Field marshal Wilhelm Keitel signs for Germany.
  • 1940 - In Canada, Royal Assent is given to the National Resources Mobilization Act, putting Canadians and their property at the disposal of the Crown. All males over age 16 are required to register for national service. Conscription for military service within Canada is introduced.
  • 1941 - (0316 hours) Germany launches Operation Barbarossa, invading the Soviet Union along an 1100-mile front, with three million soldiers, the largest invasion in history. Army Group Center, commanded by Fedor von Bock, attacks north of the Pripet Marshes from Brest-Litovsk. Army Group North, commanded by Wilhelm von Leeb, attacks through Baltic states heading to Leningrad. Army Group South, commanded by Gerd von Rundstedt, attacks south of Pripet Marshes toward Kiev. In the south, the 11th Army of Romanians and Germans attack across the Pruth River into Bessarabia. German planes begin bombing and strafing Soviet airfields. By the end of day, 1200 Russian aircraft are destroyed.
  • 1941 - Prior to the German invasion, Josef Stalin received at least 90 separate warnings of the attack since July 1940. Stalin refused to believe any, and was shocked by the invasion.
  • 1941 - Soviet Defence Minister Timoshenko issues Directive No. 1, calling up men, horses, and vehicles in accordance with MP-41 plan.
  • 1941 - (0715 hours) Soviet Defence Minister Marshal Timoshenko issues Directive No. 2, for bomber and ground-attack aircraft to destroy German aircraft on airfields and concentrations of ground forces, to a depth of 60-95 miles.
  • 1941 - (evening) In a radio broadcast, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill promises help to Russians fighting for their homeland. Churchill announces they will bomb Germany by day and night "making the German people taste and gulp each month a sharper dose of the miseries they have showered upon mankind."
  • 1941 - (about 2115 hours) Soviet Defence Minister Timoshenko issues Directive No. 3, ordering Soviet ground forces in the Southwestern Army Group in the general direction of Lubin, 55 miles inside Poland.
  • 1942 - The first liquidation action order is given for the Warsaw ghetto to remove and deliver the inhabitants to gas chambers.
  • 1942 - Quote by French Pierre Laval in a broadcast: "I wish for German victory because without that, communism will soon take over Europe.".
  • 1943 - Sixty British Lancaster bombers attack the former Zeppelin works at Friedrichshafen on Lake Constanz, under the assumption that a radar station was being installed. The attack is a success, with no loss of attacking aircraft.
  • 1943 - Romania issues three postage stamps marking the 2nd anniversary of Romanian entry into the war.
  • 1943 - (evening) 557 British bombers attack Mülheim, Germany, destroying nearly two-thirds of the area.
  • 1944 - A four-day storm in the English Channel ends, wrecking the Mulberry A harbor at Arromanches, with the loss of 800 ships sunk, damaged, or beached.
  • 1944 - The Japanese siege of Kohima is broken as British and Indian forces meet north of the town, opening the road to Imphal. General William Slim with the Indian 14th Army chases the Japanese back into Burma. By the end of the battle, 30,000 Japanese are killed, with a further 30,000 wounded. British and Indian casualties number 17,587.
  • 1944 - Soviet forces launch Operation Bagration, on German Army Group Centre. The Soviet force comprises about 1.2 million men, 166 rifle divisions, 2715 tanks, 24,000 guns, 5327 aircraft, and 700 heavy bombers.
  • 1944 - American air force bombers knock out 90% of German airplane fuel prooduction.
  • 1944 - (1240 hours) Allied bombers attack Cherbourg, France.
  • 1945 - Okinawa is declared captured by the Allies.
  • 1991 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the invasion of Russia.

Video game history:

  • 1992 - Data West releases the Rayxanber III video game for the PC Engine in Japan.
  • 1999 - Sony CEA releases the Ape Escape video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 2001 - Nintendo releases the Game Boy Advance in the United Kingdom.
  • 2004 - Capcom releases the Mega Man Anniversary Collection video game for the GameCube, Game Boy Advance, and PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2005 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the film Herbie Fully Loaded to theaters in the US. A newspaper shows a car playing a video game in an arcade.
  • 2006 - Columbia Pictures releases the film Click to theaters in Australia and Puerto Rico. Two arcade games appear, Out Run and Donkey Kong.
  • 2010 - Activision releases the Transformers: War for Cybertron video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1866 - The Riksdag of the four Estates is dissolved for the last time.
  • 1941 - German forces invade the Soviet Union.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 1987 - The A & W Concentrate Company begins using a modified oval logo with an extra brown oval around the former logo, for candy.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1869 - An Act of Canadian Parliament receives royal assent regarding illegal coin-related offences. The Act is set to take effect as of January 1, 1870.
  • 1925 - Prohibition of the export of gold coins is extended until July 1, 1926.
  • 2004 - The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the 2004 Canada Day 25-cent coin depicting a stylized moose. The design was created by Nick Wooster of Saanichton, BC. 27,000 of the coins will be distributed in a bundle with a water bottle, t-shirt, postcard, and fanny pack.

USA coin history:

  • 1979 - Stack's of New York sells a 1907 double eagle Ultra High Relief for $225,000, a record for a gold coin at public auction. Also 1920-S eagle for $85,000, and 1910-D half-eagle for $25,000.
  • 1992 - Sotheby's auction of US and foreign coins includes a hoard of 2500 1927-D Peace dollars.
  • 2022 - Ventris C. Gibson takes the oath of office as director of the U.S. Mint.

Sports history:

  • 1889 - Louisville Colonels set Major League baseball record with 26th consecutive loss.
  • 1930 - Lou Gehrig hits three home runs in a game, Babe Ruth hits three in doubleheader.
  • 1937 - Joe Louis knocks out James Braddock for the heavyweight boxing crown.
  • 1938 - Joe Louis knocks out Max Schmeling at 2:04 of first round at Yankee Stadium in New York to retain heavyweight championship.
  • 1944 - Longest shut-out in Philadelphia Phillies history; Philadelphia Phillies beat Boston Braves 1-0 in 15 innings.
  • 1949 - Ezzard Charles defeats Jersey Joe Walcott for the boxing title.
  • 1958 - Game in Kansas City between Kansas City Athletics and Boston Red Sox delayed 29 minutes due to tornado.
  • 1959 - Most Philadelphia Phillies strike out in a game (16 by Sandy Koufax).
  • 1979 - Pro Football Researchers Association founded at Canton, Ohio.
  • 1980 - Federal Republic of Germany beats Belgium 2-1 to win the Euro 80.
  • 1981 - John McEnroe exhibits a disgraceful act of misbehavior at Wimbeldon.
  • 1982 - Philadelphia Phillies' Pete Rose moves into second place for career hits passing Hank Aaron with his 3,772 hit.
  • 1983 - NHL institutes a 5-minute sudden death overtime period.
  • 1987 - Tom Seaver retires after third try with New York Mets.
  • 1990 - Longest game in Toronto, New York Yankees beat Toronto Blue Jays 8-7 in 15 innings.
  • 1992 - Radio Wimbledon, the Official Radio Station of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships is launched.
  • 2010 - The hockey sweater worn by Paul Henderson during the 1972 Summit Series Team Canada win over the Societ Union sells at auction for US$1,275,000, the most ever paid for a hockey sweater.
  • 2018 - (to July 1) The 2018 Mediterranean Games are held in Tarragona, Spain.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Angels beats Kansas City Royals by score 5-0.
  • 2022 - At RingCentral Coliseum, Oakland, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Seattle Mariners beats Oakland Athletics by score 9-0.
  • 2022 - At American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Saint Louis Cardinals beats Milwaukee Brewers by score 5-4.
  • 2022 - At Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Cleveland Guardians beats Minnesota Twins by score 11-10.

  • 2022 - At Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Houston Astros beats New York Mets by score 5-3.
  • 2022 - At Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, USA, NHL Stanley Cup Final, game 4: Colorado Avalanche beats Tampa Bay Lightning by score 3-2, leading series 3-1.

Space exploration history:

  • 1675 - Royal Greenwich Observatory established in England by Charles II.
  • 1925 - G Shajn discovers asteroid #1058 Grubba.
  • 1959 - Vanguard SLV-6 launched for Earth orbit (failed).
  • 1973 - Skylab 2's astronauts land.
  • 1978 - Charon, a satellite of the dwarf planet Pluto, is discovered by James Christy.
  • 1983 - First time a satellite is retrieved from orbit by Space Shuttle.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1958 - Game in Kansas City between Kansas City Athletics and Boston Red Sox delayed 29 minutes due to tornado.
  • 2003 - The largest hailstone ever recorded falls in Aurora, Nebraska.
  • 2007 - A Force 5 tornado tears through Elie, Manitoba, Canada; no injuries are reported.

USA history:

  • 1775 - The Continental Congress authorizes first issue of $2 million in Continental currency.
  • 1807 - British board USS Chesapeake, a provocation leading to War of 1812.
  • 1848 - Barnburners (anti-slavery) party nominates Martin Van Buren for President.
  • 1849 - Stephen C Massett opens courthouse, using only piano in California.
  • 1851 - Fire destroys part of San Francisco, California.
  • 1868 - Arkansas re-enters US.
  • 1870 - US Congress creates Department of Justice.
  • 1874 - Dr Andrew T Sill, of Macon, Missouri, founds science of osteopathy.
  • 1918 - Circus train rammed by troop train kills 68 (Ivanhoe, Illinois, USA).
  • 1918 - A circus train wreck kills 86 and injures 127 near Hammond, Indiana, USA.
  • 1936 - Virgin Islands receives a constitution from US (Organic Act).
  • 1944 - US President Franklin Roosevelt signs "GI Bill of Rights" (Servicemen's Readjustment Act).
  • 1954 - US Congress passes revised organic act for Virgin Islands.
  • 1955 - Buena Vista generally releases the Disney animated film Lady and the Tramp to theaters in the US.

  • 1965 - James D. Lathan and George York are hanged for the murders of 12 people in Tennessee, Illinois, Kansas, and Colorado, which took place over 12 days in 1961.
  • 1969 - In Cleveland, Ohio, USA, the Cuyahoga River catches fire, triggering a crack-down on pollution in the river.
  • 1970 - US President Richard Nixon signs 26th amendment (voting age lowered to 18).
  • 1977 - Former Attorney General John Mitchell starts 19 months in Alabama prison.
  • 1981 - Mark David Chapman pleads guilty to killing John Lennon.
  • 1983 - First time a satellite is retrieved from orbit by Space Shuttle.
  • 1990 - Florida passes a law prohibits wearing a thong bathing suit.
