Personal computer history:

  • 1984 - The National Computer Conference is held in Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • 1984 - Imagine Software is put into receivership in England.
  • 1985 - Atari begins shipping the Atari 520ST computer. It features monochrome monitor, 512 kB RAM, 3.5-inch floppy drive, BASIC, and Logo. Price is about US$800.
  • 1997 - Apple Computer announces the resignation of Gilbert Amelio as CEO. His severance package is about US$7.5 million. Ellen Hancock also resigns from Apple Computer.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1928 - Universal Pictures releases the 24th Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film, Tall Timber, to theaters. released.
  • 1932 - The Silly Symphony film The Bears and the Bees is released to theaters.
  • 1948 - The Pluto film Pluto's Purchase is released. Mickey Mouse and Butch also appear.
  • 1955 - The July 9 issue of Business Week magazine features Walt Disney on the cover, for an article on Disneyland.
  • 1958 - Buena Vista releases Disney's live-action feature film The Light in the Forest to theaters. The film is based on the novel by Conrad Richter.
  • 1958 - Disney releases the thirteenth People and Places film, Ama Girls, to theaters.
  • 1973 - (to August 4) The Walt Disney 50th Anniversary Film Retrospective is held at the Alice Tully Hall in New York City.
  • 1975 - Buena Vista Distribution releases the Walt Disney Productions live-action feature film One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing to theaters in the US. The film is based on the novel The Great Dinosaur Robbery by David Forrest.
  • 1976 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film Treasure of Matecumbe to theaters. The film is based on the novel A Journey to Matecumbe by Robert Lewis Taylor.
  • 1981 - Walt Disney Productions acquires Retlaw Enterprises for US$46.2 million in Disney stock. The deal gives Disney the rights to the Walt Disney name and Disneyland's monorail and steam railroad.
  • 1982 - Buena Vista releases the live-action and animated feature film Tron to theaters in the US. It cost US$21 million to produce. It is presented in Super Panavision 70mm. Mickey Mouse has a cameo appearance.
  • 1982 - Bally debuts the arcade game Tron.
  • 1989 - The NBC TV network airs The Magical World of Disney show, featuring Wild Jack, part two.
  • 1989 - The Disney Channel airs The Disney Channel Premiere Film Great Expectations, part one.
  • 1990 - The NBC TV network airs the show Turner & Hooch, a pilot for a series.
  • 1992 - Buena Vista International releases the film Beauty and the Beast to theaters in Argentina and Peru.
  • 1993 - The last episode of the TV series Cutters airs. Five shows were produced in total.
  • 1999 - The one hundredth sailing of the Disney Magic cruise ship is celebrated.
  • 2003 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl to theaters in the USA. The film includes several references to Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean attraction:
    • prisoners in jail try to get a dog with a key to come to them,
    • a pirate sits on a barrel drinking from a bottle,
    • a parrot says "Dead men tell no tales", and
    • the theme song is sung "Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me".

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1954 - Chevrolet Engineering completes 1955 Corvette V8 Powerglide Chassis blueprint drawing 3718108.
  • 1957 - General Motors' circular emblem with "CHEVROLET" at top, "Corvette" at bottom, and flags in center is registered as a trademark.
  • 1972 - At the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, near Mansfield, Ohio, the Camel GT six-hour race is held.
    • Finishing 1st in GTO class and 4th overall is the Greenwood Racing (BFG Radial) #48 Corvette driven by John Greenwood and Marshall Robbins.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTO class and 5th overall is the Greenwood Racing (BFG Radial) #50 Corvette driven by Denny Long and Jim Greendyke.
    • Finishing 3rd in GTO class and 9th overall is the R.E.D., Inc. #57 Corvette driven by Dave Heinz and Bob Johnson.

  • 1993 - At the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, the United Telephone Vintage Grand Prix races are held, over three days. Corvette is the featured marque, which includes a special display of Grand Sport Corvettes.
  • 2005 - At Exhibition Place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the Molson Indy Toronto race is held, round four of the Trans-Am Series.
    • Finishing 3th is the Tony Ave Racing #06 Corvette, driven by Joey Scarallo.
    • Finishing 7th is the Derhaag Motorsports #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.
    • Finishing 8th is the Derhaag Motorsports #78 Corvette, driven by Hima Maher.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT1 class and 10th overall is the CJ Webster Motorsports #95 Corvette, driven by Charles Webster.
    • Finishing 4th in GT1 class and 14th overall is the BC Racing #07 Corvette, driven by Blaise Csida.

  • 2017 - At the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix race is held, round 7 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 4th in GT Le Mans class and 12th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C7.R driven by Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia.
    • Finishing 8th in GT Le Mans class and 34th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - 12 British Blenheim bombers attack aircraft at Stavanger. Some 30 Me 109 and 110 fighters attack them. Only four British planes survive, badly damaged.
  • 1940 - In Canada, at a meeting of the Cabinet War Committee, the prime minister and ministers approve a project to study the spread of diseases from planes and shells. This is the beginning of germ warfare in Canada.
  • 1941 - The British Defence Committee issues a new directive to Bomber Command: to concentrate on the German rail transportation system in the Ruhr, and to demoralize the German civilian population.
  • 1941 - A large pocket of Soviet forces surrender in Minsk.
  • 1943 - (evening) 418 British bombers attack the synthetic oil production centre of Gelsenkirchen, Germany, in the Ruhr. Few hits are made.
  • 1943 - (night) England's 1st Air Landing (glider) Brigade takes off from airfields in Tunisia, bound for Sicily. This is the first use of American-built CG-4A gliders. British and American airborne troops land behind enemy lines to neutralize several enemy airfields.
  • 1943 - (late night) The Canadian assault convoy joins the main invasion armada of almost 3000 Allied ships en route to Sicily.
  • 1944 - (0330 hours) In France, Rommel orders German forces to withdraw heavy weapons at Caen moved south across the Orne River.
  • 1944 - American forces complete the capture of Saipan.
  • 1944 - Raoul Wallenberg arrives in Budapest, Hungary, as a member of the Swedish embassy.
  • 1944 - In France, Canadian forces capture the airfield at Carpiquet.
  • 1944 - A joint Anglo-American Oil Targets Committee is established.
  • 1944 - Canadian and British troops enter Caen, France.
  • 1944 - Field Marshal Erwin Rommel arranges a second exchange of badly wounded prisoners with US forces in Europe.

Video game history:

  • 1982 - Bally Manufacturing debuts the TRON arcade game.
  • 2007 - At the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Sony announces a price drop of US$100 on the PlayStation 3 with 60 GB hard drive, dropping it to US$499. The 20 GB model is now discontinued. In August, an 80 GB version with Motorstorm will debut, for US$599. Once the 60 GB version is sold out, it will be discontinued.
  • 2008 - Activision and Vivendi Games complete their merger, worth $18.8 billion, forming Activision Blizzard.

Swedish history:

  • 1628 - Danish troops arrive in Stralsund.
  • 1790 - The Swedish navy is victorious over the Russian navy at Svenskund. Over two days, Swedes sink or capture 50-64 Russian ships, killing or capturing 7,000-9,000 men. Swedes lose only four ships and under 200 men.
  • 1813 - At Trachenberg palace in Silesia, over four days, a meeting is held including Prince Karl Johan, King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia, tsar Alexander of Russia, and diplomats from Austria and England. They make plans for action against Napoleon in the autumn. The Trachenberg Plan is created, in which the three main armies would form a semi-circle to converge on Napoleon. Prince Karl Johan is given command of the Northern Army of 160,000 men with 30,000 Swedish soldiers.
  • 1944 - Raoul Wallenberg arrives in Budapest, Hungary, as a member of the Swedish embassy. Wallenberg was recruited a month earlier by the American Office of Strategic Services, to save Jews and help break Budapest's alliance with Berlin.

USA coin history:

  • 1792 - President George Washington approves purchase of house and lot for the establishment of a Mint.
  • 1792 - David Rittenhouse formally accepts position of first director of the Mint and takes oath of office.
  • 1792 - President George Washington authorizes striking of the half disme.
  • 1811 - Assistant coiner delivers 63,140 half cents.
  • 1858 - William Elmore begins term as New Orleans Mint superintendent.
  • 1917 - Congress approves a bill allowing changes to the designs of the Standing Liberty/Flying Eagle quarter dollar to be made. The bill specifies no changes be made in the emblems or devices, reposition the eagle, rearrange the stars and letters, and give the surface a slight concavity.
  • 1990 - MTB Banking Corporation of New York sells a US $20 coin, 1907, Ultra High Relief, Proof-68 NGC, for over $1.5 million, a price record for a single US coin.
  • 2008 - House of Representatives votes 419-0 to approve H.R. 6184, the "America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008".

Sports history:

  • 1877 - The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club begins its first lawn tennis tournament at Wimbledon, outside of London. The tournament originates many rules of tennis, including court size, scoring of a game, wins in six game wins a set, and allowing a server fault.
  • 1932 - Boston Braves football team is formed.
  • 1932 - New York Yankees' Ben Chapman hits two inside-the-park home runs, tying record.
  • 1933 - Frankford Yellowjackets sold, rechristened Philadelphia Eagles.
  • 1940 - National League beats American League 4-0 in 8th All Star Game (Sportsman Park, Saint Louis, Missouri).
  • 1948 - Satchel Paige, 42, debuts in majors pitching two scoreless innings for Cleveland Indians.
  • 1953 - Philadelphia Phillies' Robin Roberts ends streak of 28 consecutive complete games.
  • 1957 - American League beats National League 6-5 in 24th All Star Game (Busch Stadium, Saint Louis).
  • 1968 - National League beats American League 1-0 in first indoor All Star Game (Houston Astrodome).
  • 1969 - Tom Seaver's no-hit bid against Chicago Cubs ends with one out in the 9th.
  • 1971 - In the longest shutout in American League history, the Oakland Athletics' beat the California Angels, 1-0 in a 20-inning game.
  • 1973 - 9th Maccabiah games opens in Tel Aviv, Israel.
  • 1976 - Houston Astros' Larry Dierker no-hits Montreal Expos, 6-0.
  • 1989 - First time Wimbeldon has both men and women's final on same day.
  • 2006 - Italy wins the 2006 FIFA World Cup by beating France 5-3 on penalties. The score after extra time is 1-1.
  • 2017 - At the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix race is held, round 7 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st in Prototype class and 1st overall is the Whelen Engineering Racing #31 Cadillac DPi driven by Dane Cameron and Eric Curran.

  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Seattle Mariners beats Toronto Blue Jays by score 2-1.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats Chicago Cubs by score 4-2.
  • 2022 - At Petco Park in San Diego, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats San Diego Padres by score 3-1.
  • 2022 - At Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Boston Red Sox beats New York Yankees by score 6-5.

  • 1984 - Lightning sets fire to York Minster.
  • 2007 - While celebrating Argentinean Independence Day, snow falls in Buenos Aires for the first time in almost 100 years.

USA history:

  • 1776 - Declaration of Independence read aloud to General Washington's troops in New York.
  • 1778 - Congress approves the Articles of Confederation.
  • 1795 - James Swan pays off the US national debt of $2,024,899.
  • 1800 - Mount Vernon Gardens becomes site of first summer theatre in US.
  • 1846 - Captain John B. Montgomery claims California area for the USA.
  • 1850 - Zachary Taylor, 12th president of US, dies in White House of unknown cause, after serving 16 months.
  • 1850 - Millard Fillmore becomes the 13th President of the United States.
  • 1853 - US Admiral Matthew Perry and US Navy visit Japan.
  • 1858 - William Elmore begins term as New Orleans Mint superintendent.
  • 1862 - CSA General John Hunt Morgan captures Tompkinsville, Kentucky, USA.
  • 1863 - US troops enter Port Hudson.
  • 1868 - The 14th Amendment to the US Constitution is ratified.
  • 1916 - First cargo submarine to cross the Atlantic arrives in US from Germany.
  • 1918 - 101 killed and 171 injured in worst US train wreck, in Nashville, Tennessee, USA.
  • 1918 - US Army's Distinguished Service Cross is authorized by Congress.
  • 1918 - Congress establishes the Silver Star for gallantry in action against an opposing armed force.
  • 1950 - 13.15 inches (33.40 cm) of rainfall, York, Nebraska (state 24-hour record).
  • 1951 - US President Harry Truman asks US Congress to formally end state of war with Germany.
  • 1953 - First helicopter passenger service (New York City).
  • 1962 - The Starfish Prime high-altitude nuclear test is conducted by the USA.
  • 1968 - 39.83cm (15.68 inches) of rainfall in Columbus, Mississippi (state 24-hour record).
  • 1969 - The United States Postal Service announces a stamp to commemorate the first landing on the Moon. A record 8,743,070 requests are received for first day covers.
  • 1975 - In Western Minnesota, a magnitude 4.6 earthquake occurs. Felt over northern Iowa, Minnesota, southeastern North Dakota, and eastern South Dakota.
  • 1976 - Uganda asks United Nations to condemn Israeli hostage rescue raid on Entebbe.
  • 1978 - Nearly 100,000 demonstrators march on Washington DC for Equal Rights Amendment.
  • 1982 - Pan Am Flight 759 (Boeing 727) crashes in Kenner, Louisiana, killing all 146 on board and 8 on the ground.
  • 1985 - The Liberty-Ellis Island Commemorative Coin Act and Silver Bullion Coin Act of 1985 become law, authorizing a one-ounce 0.999 fine silver bullion coin.
  • 1989 - (to July 12) U.S. President George H. W. Bush travels to Poland and Hungary, pushing for U.S. economic aid and investment.
  • 1990 - MTB Banking Corporation of New York sells a US $20 coin, 1907, Ultra High Relief, Proof-68 NGC, for over $1.5 million, a price record for a single US coin.
  • 2010 - Russia and the US stage an exchange of spies in Vienna, Austria; the US transfers ten spies, and Russia releases four spies, the biggest spy swap since the Cold War.
