Personal computer history:

  • 1985 - In Chicago, Illinois, the National Computer Conference is held.
  • 1985 - At the National Computer Conference, Verbatim introduces a prototype optical disk drive that can read, write, and erase data.
  • 1994 - Microsoft reaches a settlement with the US Department of Justice regarding alleged monopolistic operating system licensing practices. A similar agreement is also struck with the European Commission, giving it the right to monitor Microsoft's compliance for six-and-a-half years. Microsoft agrees to change some of its practices of how it sells its operating systems to vendors in the United States and Europe. The Department of Justice begins the formal process of receiving court approval of the consent decree.
  • 2000 - Microsoft unveils its C# (C sharp) language, an extension of C++ adding XML web support, COM, and Windows API support.
  • 2002 - Microsoft announces the release name of its digital media technology code-named Corona will be Windows Media 9 Series.
  • 2002 - Apple Computer releases QuickTime 6 digital media software. A major new feature is the inclusion of MPEG-4 support.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1925 - Animation work begins on the Alice Comedy film Alice Chops the Suey.
  • 1927 - The Roxy Theatre in New York City premieres the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film Trolley Troubles.
  • 1927 - Animation work begins on the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film The Ocean Hop.
  • 1941 - US President Franklin Roosevelt sends federal labor conciliator Stanley White to Hollywood, to try to work out a settlement of the Disney workers' strike.
  • 1955 - Disney releases the animated short film The Flying Gauchito to theaters. It was originally released as part of the film The Three Caballeros.
  • 1988 - Disney re-releases the film Bambi to theaters.
  • 1989 - The Disney Channel ends airing the series Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers.
  • 1990 - The syndicated TV special show Thrills, Chills & Spiders: The Making of Arachnophobia airs.
  • 1991 - The Briar Rose Cottage shop in Fantasyland in Disneyland closes.
  • 1994 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Walt Disney Pictures / Caravan Pictures live-action feature film Angels in the Outfield to theaters in the USA.
  • 1995 - The Fairy Tale Wedding Pavilion opens at Walt Disney World, on an island near the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.
  • 1995 - Michael Eisner meets with Warren Buffet (largest shareholder of Capital Cities) and Tom Murphy (chairman of Capital Cities/ABC), about Disney buying the company. The conclusion is that if the price is right, a deal can be made.
  • 1997 - Touchstone Home Video releases the film Metro on videocassette.
  • 1998 - The Disney Magic cruise ship arrives at Port Canaveral, Florida for the first time.
  • 2005 - At Disneyland, Space Mountain re-opens following a rehabilitation. The opening is attended by former astronaut Neil Armstrong.
  • 2005 - Bosnia & Herzegovina issue two postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of Disneyland.
  • 2005 - The Turtle Talk with Crush attraction opens in Disney's California Adventure.
  • 2005 - Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, announces plans for a Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage attraction at Disneyland Park.
  • 2010 - Comedy Central airs the Futurama TV show in the USA. A game show is played called "Who Dares to Be a Millionaire?", mocking the Disney TV show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.
  • 2011 - The short cartoon The Ballad of Nessie is released in theaters.
  • 2020 - Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World re-opens.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1973 - At the Sanair International raceway in St. Pie de Bagot, Quebec, the Molson Trans-Am race is held, part of the SCCA Trans-American Championship series.
    • Finishing 3rd is the Jim Robbins Co. Corvette, driven by J. Marshall Robbins and Jerry Thompson.
    • In 25th place, but not finishing the race, is the Weaver Corvette, driven by Ron Weaver.
    • In 27th place, but not finishing the race, is The Widener College Corvette, driven by Dick Bauer.

  • 1993 - In Spearfish, South Dakota, the Black Hills Corvette Classic show is held. Chevrolet unveils the 1994 Corvette. Also on disply is Tommy Morrison's 1989 ZR-1 that set 24-hour records, and Chevrolet's 1-millionth Corvette.
  • 2001 - In Estoril, Portugal, a European Le Mans Series 1000-Km race is held. Finishing 10th in GT class and 13th overall is the AK Motorsports #68 Corvette C5, driven by Walters and Bellamy.
  • 2003 - Uganda issues five postage stamps for the 50th anniversary of Corvette, depicting 1970, 1972, 1977, and 1982 Collector Edition model Corvettes.
  • 2006 - At the Miller Motorsports Park raceway in Tooele, Utah, the Miller Dealers Utah Grand Prix race is held, round six of the SPEED GT Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st is the LG Pro Long Tube Headers #28 Corvette C6, driven by Lou Gigliotti.
    • Finishing 11th is the Whelen Engineering #31 Corvette C6, driven by Sonny Whelen.
    • Finishing 13th is the WIT Motorsports #67 Corvette C5, driven by Kevin Chambers.
    • Finishing 14th is the LG Motorsports #87 Corvette C6, driven by Doug Peterson.
    • Finishing 17th is the LG ProLong Tube Headers #26 Corvette C6, driven by Claudio Burtin.
    • Finishing 21st is the WIT Motorsports #68 Corvette C5, driven by Keith Videtto.
    • In 23rd place, but not finishing the race, is the Banner Engineering #6 Corvette C6, driven by Leighton Reese.

  • 2006 - At the Miller Motorsports Park raceway in Tooele, Utah, the Larry H. Miller Dealerships Utah Grand Prix race is held, round five of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 3rd in GT1 class and 10th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C6-R driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell.
    • Finishing 4th in GT1 class and 11th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C6-R driven by Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - Convoy HX-58 departs Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
  • 1941 - In the Soviet Union, Smolensk falls to German Army Group Centre.
  • 1943 - The British war cabinet approves use of "Window" on bombing attacks. "Window" is the code name for using bundles of aluminum foil dropped from planes to confuse enemy radar.
  • 1943 - (evening) 165 British Halifax bombers attack the Peugeot works at Montbéliard, France. 30 bombs hit the factory, but 600 hit the town, due to poor guidance by marker bombs.
  • 1944 - Field-Marshal Günther von Kluge and Field-Marshal Erwin Rommel meet with Adolf Hitler, and recommend negotiating for peace.
  • 1944 - (1300 hours) German Colonel Count Klaus von Stauffenberg meets with Adolf Hitler in the Wolf's Lair, but does not detonate his bomb briefcase.
  • 1969 - The USSR issues a postage stamp marking the 25th anniversary of the liberation of Nikolayev.
  • 1991 - Uganda issues ten postage stamps depicting Charles de Gaulle during World War II.
  • 1998 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp depicting the start of World War II, in a series on the 20th century.

Video game history:

  • 1983 - In Japan, Sega Enterprises releases the SG-1000 video game system.
  • 1983 - In Japan, Nintendo ships the Family Computer (Famicom) video game system. It features 1.79-MHz Ricoh 2A03 8-bit processor, 256x240 pixel graphics, 2 KB RAM, 5 sound channels, able to display 16 simultaneous colors from a palette of 52 colors, two controllers, microphone in one keypad. Price is 14,800 yen.
  • 1983 - Nintendo releases the Donkey Kong video game for the Family Computer in Japan.
  • 1983 - Nintendo releases the Donkey Kong Jr. video game for the Family Computer in Japan.
  • 1983 - Nintendo releases the Popeye video game for the Family Computer in Japan.
  • 1985 - James Vollandt plays Joust for over 67 hours on one coin, (with four 20-minute breaks) a world record for any arcade video game. His record high score is 107,216,700.
  • 2003 - LucasArts releases the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic video game for the Xbox in the US.
  • 2004 - Microsoft announces that Xbox Live has reached one million subscribers.
  • 2005 - The Disney Channel airs the film Life is Ruff on television in the USA. A Nintendo 64 is played without a game plugged in.
  • 2007 - Sony announces September 20 as release date for the new PlayStation Portable in Japan, at price of 19,800 yen (US$162).
  • 2007 - Total sales of the PlayStation 3 in Japan: 1 million units.
  • 2007 - Total sales of the Nintendo Wii in Japan: 3 million units.
  • 2007 - Total sales of the Nintendo DS in Japan: 18 million units.
  • 2008 - EA Sports releases the NCAA Football 09 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1976 - Paraguay issues a postage stamp depicting the Swedish warship Vasa.

Canadian coin history:

  • 2004 - The Royal Canadian Mint starts minting black and red colorized 25-cent poppy coins for circulation.

USA coin history:

  • 1946 - The House of Representatives passes legislation for Booker T. Washington and Iowa Centennial commemorative half dollars.
  • 1946 - The House of Representatives passes legislation for Iowa Centennial commemorative half dollar.
  • 1965 - The US House of Representatives passes the Coinage Act of 1965.

Sports history:

  • 1876 - US major league baseball's first no-hitter, Saint Louis Brown Stockings' George W Bradley no-hits Hartford Dark Blues.
  • 1901 - New York Giants' Christy Mathewson no-hits Saint Louis Cardinals, 5-0.
  • 1920 - Babe Ruth ties his record of 29 home runs in a season.
  • 1949 - Czech tennis stars Jaroslav Drobny and Vladimir Cernik defect to US.
  • 1960 - Baltimore Orioles' Brooks Robinson goes five for five including the cycle.
  • 1967 - Los Angeles Wolves beat Washington Whips 6-5 in overtime to be United Soccer Association champions.
  • 1967 - Roberto DeVicenzo of Argentina wins golf's British Open.
  • 1968 - New Jersey Americans move to Comack and become New York Nets (ABA).
  • 1969 - Cincinnati Reds' Lee May hits four home runs in a doubleheader.
  • 1969 - Rod Carew ties the record with his seventh steal of home in a season.
  • 1970 - Denmark beats Italy 2-0 in first world female soccer championship.
  • 1972 - Lee Trevino wins his second consecutive golf's British Open.
  • 1973 - California Angels' Nolan Ryan second no-hitter, beats Detroit Tigers, 6-0.
  • 1973 - Willie McCovey becomes 15th to hit 400 home runs.
  • 1975 - National League beats American League 6-3 in 46th All Star Game (Milwaukee's County Stadium).
  • 1980 - Johnny Bench hits his 314th home run as a catcher, breaking Yogi Berra's record.
  • 1984 - Hollis Stacy wins her third US women's open golf title.
  • 1986 - American League beats National League for second time in 15 years, winning 57th All-Star Game 3-2.
  • 2007 - Brazil defeats Argentina 3-0 in the Copa América 2007 Final.
  • 2008 - The American League takes a 4-3 victory over the National League in the 79th All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium in New York. The 15th inning game was the longest-ever All-Star game, lasting four hours and 50 minutes.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Milwaukee Brewers by score 8-5.
  • 2022 - At Petco Park in San Diego, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Diego Padres beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 5-3.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats Los Angeles Angels by score 9-1.
  • 2022 - At Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Colorado Rockies beats Pittsburgh Pirates by score 13-2.

  • 1911 - 46 inches of rain (beginning July 14) falls in Baguio, Phillipines.
  • 1916 - 22.22 inches of rain falls in Altapass, North Carolina, USA.
  • 1980 - A severe and destructive thunderstorm strikes four counties in western Wisconsin, including the city of Eau Claire. It causes over US$250 million in damage, and one person is killed.

USA history:

  • 1682 - William Penn signs first peace treaty with Indians.
  • 1869 - A J Hayne, black captain of Arkansas militia, is assassinated.
  • 1870 - Georgia becomes last Confederate State to be re-admitted to USA.
  • 1881 - Sherriff Patrick F. Garrett of Lincoln County, New Mexico, shoots to death outlaw William H. Bonney "Billy the Kid" at the home of Peter Maxwell.
  • 1893 - US Commodore Matthew Perry arrives in Japan.
  • 1896 - US Navy battleship USS Oregon is commissioned.
  • 1898 - Spaniards surrender to US at Santiago, Cuba.
  • 1904 - First Buddhist temple in US established, Los Angeles, California.

  • 1920 - The Manila Mint in the Philippines officially opens for business. First coin struck, by US governor-general Francis Burton Harrison, is a bronze 1-centavo coin. This is the first official coinage of the Philippines under US administration.

  • 2008 - The American League takes a 4-3 victory over the National League in the 79th All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium in New York. The 15th inning game was the longest-ever All-Star game, lasting four hours and 50 minutes.
  • 2020 - NBC Universal launches the Peacock video streaming service in the USA.

  • 1870 - Manitoba becomes fifth Canadian province, and Northwest Territories created.
  • 1888 - Bandai volcano (Japan) erupts for first time in 1,000 years.
