Personal computer history:

  • 1996 - Caldera International buys DR-DOS from Novell.
  • 1996 - Caldera files an antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft, seeking monetary damages resulting from Microsoft's MS-DOS licensing practices. The lawsuit also seeks a court order for Microsoft to end all per-processor license agreements on any operating system, and end pricing policies that make hardware vendors dependent exclusively on Microsoft.
  • 2006 - Advanced Micro Devices agrees to pay US$5.4 billion in cash and stock to acquire ATI Technologies of Canada.
  • 2006 - A Business Week magazine article on ethics shows a portion of a computer keyboard with "Cheat" in place of "Enter", and "Excuses" in place of "Shift".

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1942 - The Donald Duck film Donald's Gold Mine is released to theaters.
  • 1966 - The New Orleans Square area opens at Disneyland. It cost US$15-18 million, and occupies 3 acres. Walt Disney and the mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana, dedicate the area.
  • 1966 - The Cristal d'Orleans shop opens on Royal Street in New Orleans Square at Disneyland.
  • 1966 - The Mint Julep Bar opens in New Orleans Square in Disneyland.
  • 1966 - The Creole Café restaurant opens in New Orleans Square at Disneyland.
  • 1966 - The One-of-a-Kind antique shop opens in New Orleans Square in Disneyland.
  • 1966 - The French Market buffet restaurant opens in New Orleans Square at Disneyland.
  • 1985 - Buena Vista releases the Walt Disney Pictures animated feature film The Black Cauldron to theaters. It cost over US$40 million to make. It is the first animated feature filmed in Technirama-70mm since Sleeping Beauty. It is the first Disney animated feature film to be given a "PG" rating. It also marks the studio's first use of computer-generated images in a feature film. It is the first film to use Animation Photo Transfer process. The film is based on The Chronicles of Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander.
  • 1989 - Tony's Town Square Restaurant opens on Town Square in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1991 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film The Doctor to theatres in four American cities. The film is based on the book A Taste of My Own Medicine by Doctor Ed Rosenbaum.
  • 1994 - The KCAL TV network in Los Angeles airs the special Lion King Celebration: A Roaring Good Time.
  • 1995 - The stage show Beauty and the Beast opens in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
  • 2005 - Disney holds the premiere of the live-action film Sky High in Hollywood.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1971 - At the Watkins Glen raceway in Watkins Glen, New York, the Watkins Glen 6 Hour endurance race is held.
    • Finishing 1st in GT+2.5 class and 5th overall is the John Greenwood Racing #49 Corvette driven by Robert R. Johnson and John Greenwood.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT+2.5 class and 7th overall is the Or Costanzo/Tri City Corvette Club #57 1969 Corvette L-88 driven by Dave Heinz and Don Yenko.
    • Finishing 3rd in GT+2.5 class and 8th overall is the Iroquois Racing Associates #41 Corvette driven by Bill Schumacher, Bob McClure, and Bob Kiefer.

  • 1976 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the SCCA Trans-Am Championship - Round 5 race is held.
    • Finishing 1st in category I and 6th overall is the Craig Car Stereo #98 Corvette 427, driven by Don Hager.
    • Finishing 3rd in category I and 8th overall is the Stark Enterprises #17 Corvette 433, driven by Rick Stark.
    • Finishing 4th in category I and 10th overall is the DePirro Racing #73 Corvette 350, driven by Paul DePirro.
    • Finishing 5th in category I and 11th overall is the King Engine #80 Corvette 454, driven by Nick Engels.

World War II history:

  • 1929 - The Treaty of Paris becomes effective, with 31 more countries signing compliance.
  • 1939 - Great Britain, France, and Russia agree to offer mutual assistance should any of the three be attacked.
  • 1941 - British Bomber Command attempts a massive daylight aerial attack on German warships Prinz Eugen and Gneisenau at Brest, and the Scharnhorst at La Pallice. 36 Blenheim bombers make a diversionary raid on Cherbourg docks. Nine are shot down. Three Fortress bombers fly high toward Brest, while 18 Hampden bombers with Spitfire escort come in below. Two Hampdens are shot down. Then 79 Wellington bombers arrive in a second wave. Ten are shot down. 15 Halifax bombers attack the Scharnhorst at La Pallice, making five hits on the battle cruiser, doing serious damage. Five planes are shot down, the others are all damaged.
  • 1941 - The Japanese government demands of Vichy France permission to occupy airbases in southern Indochina, and use the naval base at Camranh Bay. Vichy France reluctantly signs a Treaty for the Defence of Indochina. Japanese forces enter Saigon and occupy key positions throughout Indo-China.
  • 1942 - In convoy ON-113 across the Atlantic ocean, Royal Canadian Navy destroyer St. Croix sinks German submarine U-90.
  • 1942 - Britain and the US decide to invade French North Africa, code named Operation Torch. Original code name was Gymnast.
  • 1943 - 300 Allied heavy bombers attack chemical plants and submarine shelters in Norway. Little damage is done to the 12-foot thick shelters.
  • 1943 - In Italy, an extraordinary meeting of the Fascist Grand Council is held. Benito Mussolini receives a vote of no confidence.
  • 1943 - (evening) British Bomber Command begins Operation Gomorrah, a massive air assault on Hamburg, Germany.
  • 1943 - (near midnight) An airborne armada of 791 Lancaster, Halifax, Stirling, and Wellington aircraft cross the North Sea, heading for Hamburg, Germany.
  • 1944 - Otto John escapes Berlin, flying to Madrid, Spain. He was an Abwer agent and legal advisor to Lufthansa Airline. He had attempted contact with the Allies, and knew of the July 20 coup attempt.
  • 1944 - American Marines land on Tinian in the Mariana Islands.
  • 1944 - In France, Operation Cobra is started, but soon postponed due to cloud cover. About 400 bombers from Britain are not informed, and drop their bombs, some on US positions, killing 25, wounding 131.
  • 1944 - In Germany, Wolf Heinrich von Helldorf is arrested. He was Berlin Police President, part of conspiracy against Adolf Hitler since 1938.
  • 1944 - British 1st and 8th Corps break through to south of Caen in France.
  • 1944 - 1600 US bombers attack German positions on front lines in France. However, some drop bombs far to the German rear, and some drop early on Allied positions. US Lieutenant General Lesley McNair, commander of the Army Ground Forces, is killed, the highest-ranking American officer ever killed in action. He was on an inspection tour from Washington, DC, to observe the effect of the carpet-bombing.
  • 1962 - Saint Pierre and Miquelon issues a postage stamp marking the 20th anniversary of joining the Free French.

Video game history:

  • 2007 - EA Sports releases the NASCAR 08 video game for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the US.
  • 2007 - Square Enix releases the Final Fantasy II Anniversary Edition video game for the PlayStation Portable in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1628 - The siege of Stralsund is lifted.
  • 1645 - The French army under Turenne, with Swedish reinforcements, defeat the Bavarian army and kill leader Franz von Mercy at Allerheim.
  • 1709 - On the invitation of Governor Yussuf Pasha, King Karl XII and group arrive in Bender, setting up camp outside the city.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1984 - The Royal Canadian Mint issues the 1984 commemorative nickel dollar.
  • 1997 - The Royal Canadian Mint announces that no 1997-dated 25c or $1 coins would be struck for circulation.

USA coin history:

  • 1980 - (to July 26) New England Rare Coin Galleries conducts the Boston Jubilee Sale auction of coins. A US $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin, Ultre High Relief, sells for US$175,000.
  • 1997 - Representative Michael Castle introduces legislation in the House of Representatives to require the obverse of a new dollar coin depict the Statue of Liberty.
  • 1998 - Representative Michael Castle introduces legislation to mandate the Statue of Liberty design be used for the small dollar coin.
  • 2014 - The US Mint in Philadelphia surpasses its record for number of coins struck in a single day: 42.44 million.

Sports history:

  • 1929 - New York to San Francisco footrace ends (2.5 months) winner is 60-year-old Monteverde.
  • 1963 - Sonny Liston knocks out Floyd Patterson to retain heavyweight championship.
  • 1965 - Casey Stengel resigns as manager of the New York Mets.
  • 1969 - Hoyt Wilhelm pitches in a record 907th major league game.
  • 1973 - National League beats American League 7-1 in 44th All Star Game (Royals Stadium, Kansas City).
  • 1973 - Sue Berning wins US golf open for third time.
  • 1978 - Billy Martin resigns as New York Yankees' manager.
  • 1983 - George Brett, batting for the Kansas City Royals against the New York Yankees, has a game-winning home run nullified in the "Pine Tar Incident."
  • 1984 - Seve Ballesteros wins the British Open.
  • 1988 - US and Jamaica play scoreless tie, in second round of 1990 world soccer cup.
  • 2005 - Lance Armstrong wins a record 7th straight Tours de France before his scheduled retirement.
  • 2022 - At Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Cleveland Guardians beats Chicago White Sox by score 7-4.
  • 2022 - At Citi Field in New York City, New York, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: New York Mets beats San Diego Padres by score 8-5.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Washington Nationals beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats San Francisco Giants by score 7-4.
