  • 1993 - Cyrix terminates Texas Instruments' license to manufacture and produce Cyrix-designed x86 compatible processors.
  • 1996 - Apple Computer releases QuickTime 2.5 for Macintosh (System 6.0.7 or higher), adding support for interchangeable Motion JPEG video compression format.
  • 1997 - Apple Computer releases Mac OS 8.0 for US$99. Code-name during development was Tempo.
  • 2005 - Apple Computer releases updated Mac Mini computers. A version with 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 processor is priced at US$499. A version with 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4 processor and AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth is priced at US$599. A similar model with SuperDrive (CD/DVD burner) is priced at US$699.
  • 2005 - Apple Computer releases updated iBook portable computers. Common features include a scrolling TrackPad, sudden-motion sensor, 512 MB RAM, AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi networking, Bluetooth 2.0 wireless connectivity. The iBook with 12-inch screen and 1.33 GHz PowerPC G4 costs US$999. The model with 14-inch screen and 1.42 GHz processor is US$1,299.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1951 - Disney premieres the animated feature film Alice in Wonderland in England at London's Leicester Square Theatre.
  • 1979 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film Unidentified Flying Oddball to theaters in the US. The film was released in Europe as The Spaceman and King Arthur.
  • 1986 - The Disney Channel airs the Disney Channel Premiere Film The Parent Trap II.
  • 1991 - Disney releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film V.I. Warshawski to theatres.
  • 1995 - Tom Murphy of Capital Cities counters Disney's offer of US$115 per share for the company by asking one share of Disney stock plus US$65 cash per share. That is worth roughly US$120 per share.
  • 1996 - Guyana issues fourteen postage stamps depicting various Disney characters.
  • 1996 - Guyana issues ten postage stamps depicting Disney antique toys.
  • 2002 - Disney generally releases the film The Country Bears to theaters in the USA.
  • 2008 - The Family Channel airs the premiere of Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert 3-D movie on TV in Canada.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1953 - A truce is signed in Korean War. This allows American automobile manufacturers to shift more time and money toward domestic automobile production, including special projects like sports cars.
  • 1975 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, Round 6 of the SCCA Trans-American Championship series is held.
    • Finishing 1st is the Advance United Corvette 454, driven by Jerry Hansen.
    • Finishing 2nd is the Corvette Tech Corvette 461, driven by Tim Startup.
    • Finishing 6th is the Rick Stark Enterprises Corvette 427, driven by Rick Stark.

  • 1987 - At the Portland International Raceway in Portland, Oregon, the G.I. Joe's Grand Prix race is held, part of the IMSA Camel GT series. The two Corvette GTP cars finish 4th and 7th.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - New Japanese prime minister Prince Fumimaro Konoye unveils his plan to take advantage of the European powers' weakness in Asia.
  • 1941 - US President Franklin Roosevelt orders the freezing of Japanese assets in the US, and orders an embargo of all petroleum exports to Japan. British and Dutch governments also declare trade embargos and freezing of Japanese assets.
  • 1941 - US War Department establishes US Forces in the Far East command, under General Douglas MacArthur, based at Manilla, Philippines.
  • 1941 - Armed forces of Philippines are brought into the service of the USA.
  • 1942 - Dutch bishops issue a public protest of the arrest and deportation of Dutch Jews.
  • 1942 - (evening) 403 British aircraft attack Hamburg, Germany, destroying or damaging 6000 houses, killing 337, and leaving 14,000 homeless.
  • 1943 - German commander General Walther Model orders troops to withdraw from the Orel salient north of Kursk.
  • 1943 - Adolf Hitler issues Directive 48, directing defence measures in the event of Allied landings in Crete and Greece.
  • 1943 - (daytime) 44 bombers of the US 8th Air Force attack Hamburg, Germany. Two planes are shot down.
  • 1945 - USS Indianapolis arrives at Tinian island in the Marianas, and unloads atomic bomb components to be used against Japan.
  • 1945 - At the Potsdam conference, a final ultimatum is presented to Japan: unconditional surrender or "complete destruction of the Japanese armed forces and ... devastation of the Japanese homeland".
  • 1994 - Dominica issues four postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the D-Day invasion of Normandy.
  • 2001 - The US Congressional Medal of Honor is awarded to Navajo code breakers of World War II.
  • 2004 - Antigua & Barbuda issues 14 postage stamps for the 60th anniversary of D-Day.

Video game history:

  • 1982 - Federal District judge George Leighton rules that Mattel Electronics had infringed patents of Magnavox on the Odyssey video game system.
  • 2002 - In Australia, a Federal Court judge rules that mod chips for the PlayStation do not violate copyright rules that outlaw devices to bypass copyright-protection technology.
  • 2002 - Sony announces it has shipped 10 million PlayStation 2 systems in Japan.
  • 2005 - Natsume releases the Harvest Moon: Another Wonderful Life video game for the GameCube in the US.
  • 2009 - Nintendo releases the Wii Sports Resort video game for the Nintendo Wii in the USA.
  • 2011 - Atlus releases the Catherine video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1979 - At Auction '79 in St. Louis, Missouri, Anthony Carrato of the Eagle Coins company in Niagara Falls, Ontario, buys a 1911 $1 pattern for US$160,000 (about CDN$184,000).

USA coin history:

  • 1979 - (to July 27) In Saint Louis, Missouri, Auction '79 is held by four large coin companies: Paramount, Rare Coin Company of America, Stack's, and Superior. Some highlights:
    • 1787 Brasher gold doubloon pattern, one of seven known: $430,000, bought by Walter Perschke, president of Numisco coin brokerage form in Chicago;
    • 1849-C $1 gold, EF: $90,000, record for US gold dollar;
    • 1838-O 50-cent, Proof 60: $62,500;
    • 1854-O $20, EF: $45,000;
    • 1920-S $10, MS-64: $44,000;

  • 1928 - New York Yankees score 11 runs in 12th inning beating Detroit Tigers 12-1.
  • 1933 - Joe Dimaggio ends 61-game hitting streak in Pacific Coast League.
  • 1939 - New York Yankees catcher Bill Dickey hits three consecutive home runs.
  • 1952 - Mickey Mantle hits his first grand-slammer.
  • 1957 - Mickey Mantle hits career home run number 200.
  • 1967 - Minnesota Twins beat New York Yankees 3-2 in 18 innings.
  • 1983 - Jarmila Kratochvilova of Czech sets 800m woman's record (1:53.28).
  • 1988 - Mike Schmidt sets National League record appearing in 2,155 games at third base.
  • 1990 - US beats the Soviet Union 17-0 in baseball at the Goodwill Games.
  • 1991 - Montreal Expos' Mark Gardner no hits Los Angeles Dodgers for 9 innings, but loses in 10th.
  • 2005 - Greg Maddux of the Chicago Cubs becomes the 13th pitcher in major league baseball history to register 3,000 strikeouts.
  • 2009 - In Donington, Great Britain, round 10 of the FIM MotoGP Championship is won by Andrea Dovizioso.
  • 2009 - In Budapest, Hungary, round 10 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship is won by Lewis Hamilton.
  • 2019 - (to August 11) The 2019 Pan American Games are held in Lima, Peru.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Washington Nationals beats Los Angeles Dodgers by score 8-3.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Seattle Mariners beats Texas Rangers by score 5-4.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1979 - Estimated 109 cm (43 inches) of rain falls in Alvin, Texas (national record).
  • 2005 - Mumbai and the Mumbai Conurbation area are submerged in 5-7 feet of water due to heavy rains, making nearby dams release water causing a massive flood, which virtually stops the financial capital of India for 4-5 days.

USA history:

  • 1775 - Benjamin Franklin is appointed Postmaster General of the Continental Post Office, with salary set at $1000 per year.
  • 1788 - New York becomes 11th state to ratify US Constitution.
  • 1790 - US passes Assumption Act making federal government responsible for state debts.

  • 2004 - (to July 29) The Democratic National Convention in Boston, Massachusetts nominates John Kerry for U.S. President and John Edwards for Vice President.
  • 2005 - Space Shuttle Discovery is launched on its "Return To Flight" mission. This is the first space shuttle flight in nearly 2 1/2 years since the breakup of Space Shuttle Columbia on its return from mission STS-107.
  • 2007 - A 50-pound chunk of white ice crashes through the roof of a house, in Dubuque, Iowa, USA. Other large chunks of ice fall from the clear sky, tearing through nearby trees.

  • 1945 - Churchill resigns as Britain's Prime Minister.
  • 1953 - Fidel Castro leads attack on Moncada Barracks, begins Cuban revolution.
  • 1956 - Egypt seizes the Suez Canal.
  • 2008 - In India, 19 separate explosions in the western city of Ahmedabad, all within an hour, kill 51 people and wound 200.
