Personal computer history:

  • 1981 - Microsoft buys all rights to 86-DOS from Seattle Computer Products for US$50,000, and the name MS-DOS is adopted. Microsoft agrees to give SCP generous terms for licensing its languages.
  • 1989 - Lotus Development ships Lotus 1-2-3 Release 2.2 for MS-DOS.
  • 2003 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs the Futurama TV show in the US. On an island of obsolete robots, one is labeled "SINCLAIR 2K", who is obsolete because it does not have enough memory. This is likely a reference to the Timex/Sinclair 1000 microcomputers of 1982 with 2 kB of RAM.
  • 2004 - Microsoft releases Service Pack 1 for Office 2003, containing bug fixes and stability improvements.
  • 2006 - Intel releases the Core 2 Duo E6700 processor. It features dual processing cores, 4 MB shared L2 cache, 2.66 GHz clock speed, 1066 MHz front side bus, 65 nm process. Price is US$530. Code name of the Core 2 Duo during development was Conroe.
  • 2006 - Intel releases the Core 2 Extreme X6800 processor. It features dual processing cores, 4 MB shared L2 cache, 2.93 GHz clock speed, 1066 MHz 128-bit front side bus, 65 nm process, 291 million transistors, maximum addressable memory 8 GB. Price is US$999.
  • 2006 - Intel releases the Core 2 Duo processor, models E6300, E6400, and E6600. All have 1066 MHz front-side bus and 65 nm traces. Models E6300 and E6400 have 2 MB cache, the E6600 has 4 MB cache. Clock speeds are 1.86 GHz, 2.13 GHz, and 2.4 GHz, respectively. Prices are US$183, US$224, and US$316, respectively. Code name of the Core 2 Duo during development was Conroe.
  • 2007 - Intel releases the 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo E6600 processor, with 4 MB cache and 1066 MHz front-side bus. Price is US$316 in 1000-unit quantities. Model E6700 (2.66 GHz) costs US$530; model X6800 (2.93 GHz) costs US$999.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1945 - The Pluto film Canine Casanova is released to theaters.
  • 1956 - Disney releases the Humphrey Bear film In the Bag to theaters. Ranger Woodlore also appears.
  • 1984 - Irwin Jacobs delivers a letter to each of the directors of Disney, requesting that the Gibson Greetings deal be killed. He requests special meeting of stockholders to vote on it.
  • 1989 - Disney releases the film The United Nations for educational use. The film is part of the "Mickey's Field Trips" series.
  • 1994 - Disney releases the film The Incredible Journey on laserdisc.
  • 1995 - Disney agrees to buy Capital Cities / ABC for one Disney share plus US$65 cash per ABC share. Total value of the deal is about US$20 billion.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1974 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the third and final round of the SCCA Trans-American Championship series is held.
    • Finishing 10th is the Van Arnem Abex Corvette, driven by Jerry Thompson.
    • Finishing 15th is the Pace Racing Corvette, driven by Gary Sullivan.
    • Finishing 17th is the Rear Corvette, driven by Bob Bienerth and Blake Rear.
    • Finishing 20th is the Tarbell's Tinker Corvette, driven by Roger Pierce.
    • Finishing 22nd is the Corvette's Unlimited Corvette, driven by Don Hager.
    • In 27th place, but not finishing the race, is the Greenwood Racing Corvette, driven by John Greenwood. Greenwood set a new qualifying lap record, and lead the race for 14 laps before suffering an engine failure.
    • In 29th place, but not finishing the race, is the Performance Unlimited Corvette, driven by James Moyer.
    • In 32nd place, but not finishing the race, is the Texas Instruments Corvette, driven by Alex Davidson.
    • In 33rd place, but not finishing the race, is the Midwest Motorsports Corvette, driven by Tim Startup.
    • In 34th place, but not finishing the race, is the Go-Ten Racing Corvette, driven by Joe Pirrotta.

  • 2003 - At the Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California, the Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma race is held, round six of the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge GT series.
    • Finishing 5th is the 3R Racing #73 Corvette Z06, driven by Phil McClure.
    • Finishing 7th is the Metric Chemical #35 Corvette Z06, driven by David Farmer.
    • Finishing 12th is the Tiger Racing #99 Corvette Z06, driven by Thomas Oates.
    • Finishing 13th is the Black Dog Racing #25 Corvette, driven by Tony Gaples.
    • Finishing 16th is the Eagle Concrete #47 Corvette Z06, driven by Bob Taylor.
    • Finishing 19th is the WIT Racing #68 Corvette Z06, driven by Kevin Chambers.
    • In 23rd place, but not finishing the race, is the Courtesy Chevrolet #5 Corvette Z06, driven by Don Campbell.

  • 2003 - At the Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California, the Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma race is held, round three of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 1st in GTS class and 8th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C5-R, driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTS class and 9th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C5-R, driven by Kelly Collins, Oliver Gavin.

World War II history:

  • 1943 - (evening) A second British bomber force of 729 planes is sent to attack Hamburg, Germany.
  • 1944 - Germans abandon their rocket research facility at Blizna, Poland.
  • 1944 - Colonel Hans Otfreid von Linstow, Chief of Staff to Heinrich Stulpnagel, is arrested.
  • 1955 - Allied occupation of Austria ends, granting her independence.

Video game history:

  • 1990 - Nintendo releases the Dr. Mario video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System in the US.
  • 1990 - NEC releases the Ghouls 'n Ghosts video game for the PC Engine in Japan.
  • 1999 - Nintendo releases the Mario Golf 64 video game for the Nintendo 64 in the US.
  • 2004 - Nokia releases the N-Gage QD handheld video game system in the US. It features bottom-mounted slot for MMC game cards, 1.6 x 1.9 inch 176x208 resolution color screen, 8-way game pad, Bluetooth connectivity, 104 MHz ARM processor, Symbian 6.0 operating system, no MP3 player, no radio, no USB port. Weight is 5 ounces; size is 4.7 x 2.7 x 0.9 inches; price is US$199.
  • 2005 - Sony makes available PlayStation Portable firmware version 2.0 via Internet download in Japan. New features include Web browser, wireless photo sharing, MPEG4 and AAC media format support.

Swedish history:

  • 1361 - Peasant resistance outside the walls of Visby on Gotland is crushed by Danish forces. About 2000 peasants are killed. The gates are opened either by force or voluntarily.
  • 1647 - In the royal chapel in Stockholm Castle, a peasant called Presbeckius attempts to kill the Queen, but is subdued.
  • 1648 - A preliminary peace is signed at Osnabrück between Sweden and the Emperor.
  • 1989 - Christer Pettersson is found guilty of the murder of Olof Palme in 1986.
  • 1998 - Liberia issues a postage stamp depicting Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1973 - Parliament and the Senate approve Bill C-196, allowing the production and sale of commemorative coins to help fund the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal.

USA coin history:

  • 1837 - US Branch Mint opens in Charlotte, North Carolina.
  • 1838 - The New Orleans Mint closes for annual yellow fever epidemic.
  • 1844 - A fire at the Charlotte Mint halts production of coins.
  • 2009 - The US Mint releases the 2009 American Samoa quarter dollar to circulation.

Sports history:

  • 1920 - Resolute beats Shamrock IV (England) in 14th running of America's Cup.
  • 1924 - Games of the VIII Olympiad closes in Paris, France.
  • 1946 - Boston Red Sox player Rudy York hits two grand slams in one game.
  • 1972 - NHL star Maurice "Rocket" Richard signs with WHL Quebec Nordiques.
  • 1973 - Walter Blum becomes 6th jockey to ride 4,000 winners.
  • 1984 - Pete Rose passes Ty Cobb as the Major Baseball League all-time single base hit leader as he collects his 3,053rd.
  • 1986 - Greg LeMond wins the Tour de France.
  • 1989 - Atlanta Braves' player Dale Murphy is 10th to get six RBIs in an inning (6th).
  • 1996 - The Centennial Olympic Park bombing at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta kills one and injures 111.
  • 2008 - Carlos Sastre wins the Tour de France bicycle race in France.
  • 2008 - Rafael Nadal wins his second Rogers Cup tennis championship in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with a 6-3, 6-2 win over German Nicolas Kiefer in the final. In the men's doubles final, Toronto's Daniel Nestor and partner Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia defeat the American pairing of Bob and Mike Bryan 6-2, 4-6, 10-6.
  • 2008 - Relief pitcher Rich "Goose" Gossage and former manager Dick Williams are inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
  • 2012 - (to August 12) The 2012 Summer Olympics are held in London, England, United Kingdom.
  • 2022 - At Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Cleveland Guardians beats Boston Red Sox by score 7-6.
  • 2022 - At Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Major League Baseball regular season game: Saint Louis Cardinals beats Toronto Blue Jays by score 6-1.
  • 2022 - At Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Tampa Bay Rays beats Baltimore Orioles by score 6-4.
  • 2022 - At Citi Field in New York City, New York, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: New York Mets beats New York Yankees by score 3-2.
