- 1989 - At the Chicago Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago, Illinois, the AmiEXPO trade show is held, over three days. 10,437 people attend.
- 1995 - Columbia Pictures releases the film The Net to theaters in the USA.
- The game Wolfenstein 3D is played/debugged on a Macintosh computer.
- Another computer shows the Windows operating system running.
- Several types of Apple Macintosh computers are used throughout the film.
- 1997 - National Semiconductor announces an agreement to acquire Cyrix, for US$550 million in stock.
- 2005 - Microsoft reports it has sold 100,000 copies of Windows XP Starter Edition to date.
- 2006 - Macao issues a postage stamp depicting a personal computer keyboard and mouse.
- 1930 - The Silly Symphony film Midnight in a Toy Shop is completed.
- 1931 - The Silly Symphony film The Cat's Out is released to theaters. The name on the copyright registration is The Cat's Nightmare.
- 1942 - Walt Disney first meets with Major Alexander de Seversky, author of Victory Through Air Power, to purchase the film rights and commence work on a feature film based on the book.
- 1951 - RKO Radio Pictures releases Disney's True-Life Adventure film Nature's Half Acre to theaters in the US.
- 1951 - RKO Radio Pictures releases Disney's film Alice in Wonderland to theaters in the US. The film cost US$3 million to make.
- 1987 - At the SIGGRAPH convention in Anaheim, California, Disney shows the computer-generated short film Oilspot and Lipstick. John Lasseter chairs the panel session Traditions and the Future of Character Animation, examining the past, present, and future of Disney animation.
- 1989 - Sid Bass' investment group reports that its stake in the Walt Disney Company increased from 15.2 percent to 18.6, due mainly to two of its members being elected officers of a company that controls 2 percent of Disney shares.
- 1989 - Buena Vista Pictures Distribution releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Turner and Hooch to theaters in the USA.
- 1993 - The Bank of America closes its branch location in Disneyland. The location continues under the name Bank of Main Street.
- 1994 - Ground breaking begins for a new Vacation Club Resort in Vero Beach, Florida.
- 1994 - The Fox TV network air the last episode of The Sinbad Show.
- 1995 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film Operation Dumbo Drop to theaters in the US.
- 1997 - The Comedy Central TV network begins airing Win Ben Stein's Money.
- 1999 - Comedy Central airs the South Park TV show in the USA. The Master Control Program from the film Tron is used to represent a fantasy character.
- 1953 - Zora Arkus-Duntov proposes a 1955 Corvette 323hp V8 supercar to Ed Cole, who nixes the idea.
- 1973 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the Road America Trans-Am race, part of the SCCA Trans-American series.
- Finishing 1st is the Greenwood Racing #48 Corvette, driven by John Greenwood.

- 1940 - British armed merchant cruiser Alcantara battles German armed merchant cruiser Thor in the West Indies off Trinidad. Both ships are damaged.
- 1942 - Josef Stalin orders forces at Stalingrad to not retreat.
- 1942 - The German 6th Army reaches the Don River near Kalach.
- 1943 - (0057 hours) 722 British bombers attack Hamburg, Germany, dropping 2326 tons of bombs, creating nine square miles of firestorm, reaching 1800 degrees Fahrenheit, with winds up to 150 MPH feeding the fire. About 40,000 are killed.
- 1943 - Canadian troops take Agira and Monte Fronte, Italy, after five days of hard fighting.
- 1944 - The US 1st Army breaks through German lines near Coutances.
- 1944 - In Germany, Ulrich von Hassell is arrested. He was to serve as Foreign Minister in a post-Nazi government.
- 1944 - (evening) 307 British bombers attack Hamburg, Germany. About 22 planes are shot down.
- 1945 - Japanese Prime Minister Kantaro Suzuki rejects the Potsdam ultimatum, saying Japan will fight for a successful conclusion to the war.
- 1945 - Three US C-54 cargo planes arrive at Tinian island in the Marianas, with critical target insert components of the atomic bomb to be used against Japan.
- 1995 - Columbia Pictures releases the film The Net to theaters in the USA. A scene takes place in an amusement park, showing several arcade video games.
- 2003 - Nintendo releases the Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour video game for the GameCube in the US.
- 2011 - Nintendo announces it is cutting the price of the Nintendo 3DS in the US from US$249.99 to US$169.99.
- 2017 - Nintendo releases the Hey! Pikmin video game for the Nintendo 3DS in the USA.
- 2017 - Nintendo launches the Nintendo 2DS XL handheld video game system in the USA. price is US$149.
- 1984 - (to August 12) The 23rd Olympic Games are held in Los Angeles, California, USA. Sweden wins 2 gold, 11 silver, and 6 bronze medals.
- 2000 - In Norstead, Newfoundland, Canada, near L'Anse aux Meadows, thirteen replica Viking longships from Sweden, Norway, and elsewhere arrive as part of a Grand Encampment Ceremony, in celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the arrival of Vikings in North America, and their establishment of a settlement.
- 1921 - President Warren Harding issues executive order requiring coin designs to come under purview of Commission of Fine Arts.
- 1937 - Congressman Cochran introduces H.R. 8036 in the House of Representatives, presenting a report on abuses of commemorative coins, proposing commemorative coins cese to be produced.
