Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1925 - Live-action filming is complete for the Alice Comedy film Alice the Jail Bird.
  • 1932 - The Silly Symphony film Just Dogs is released to theaters. Pluto also appears. This is the last black and white Silly Symphony film.
  • 1932 - Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood premieres the Silly Symphony film Flowers and Trees. This is the first full color cartoon. Originally, the film was created in black and white, but was scrapped and remade in color. The film preceeds the MGM feature film Strange Interlude.
  • 1942 - Disney delivers the film Out of the Frying Pan into the Firing Line to the Conservation Division of the War Production Board. Minnie Mouse appears in the film.
  • 1943 - The Goofy film Victory Vehicles is released. Pluto also appears.
  • 1948 - The Donald Duck film The Trial of Donald Duck is released.
  • 1955 - The Tomorrowland Boats attraction opens in Disneyland, between Tomorrowland and Fantasyland.
  • 1956 - The Mineral Hall shop opens in Frontierland at Disneyland.
  • 1982 - Buena Vista makes an initial release of the live-action feature film Tex to theaters in the US. The film is based on the novel by S.E. Hinton. Matt Dillon has his first starring role in the film. Emilio Estevez and Meg Tilly make their first film appearances.
  • 1984 - Irwin Jacobs files a lawsuit against Disney, in an attempt to block the Gibson Greetings deal.
  • 1986 - Disney releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film Flight of the Navigator to theaters in the US.
  • 1990 - The ABC TV network airs the pilot TV show The Knife & Gun Club.
  • 1993 - The Indiana Jones et le Temple du Péril attraction opens in Adventureland at Euro Disneyland. This is the first loop-the-loop attraction in a Disney theme park.
  • 1995 - The Disney board of directors approves the Capital Cities / ABC takeover deal.
  • 1998 - The Disney Cruise Line launches its first cruise ship, the Disney Magic.
  • 1999 - Disney releases the Paramount Pictures / Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Runaway Bride to theaters in the USA.
  • 2010 - The last Aaron Stone TV show airs on Disney XD.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1966 - Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation releases the film Batman in theaters in the USA. A Nassau Blue 1965-66 Corvette convertible appears very briefly.
  • 2005 - At the San Jose Street Circuit in San Jose, California, the Cytomax Sport Drink 100 race is held, round six of the Trans-Am Series.
    • Finishing 4th is the Derhaag Motorsports #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.
    • Finishing 5th is the Derhaag Motorsports #78 Corvette, driven by Hima Maher.
    • Finishing 14th is the Tony Ave Racing #06 Corvette, driven by Joey Scarallo.

  • 2005 - At the Portland International Raceway in Portland, Oregon, the Portland Grand Prix race is held, round six of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 1st in GT1 class and 5th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C6-R driven by Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT1 class and 6th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C6-R driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell.
    • Finishing 3rd in GT1 class and 8th overall is the Corvette C5-R driven by Ryan Dalziel and Alex Figge.

  • 2006 - At the Barber Motorsports Park raceway in Birmingham, Alabama, the Porsche 250 race is held, round twelve of the Grand American Rolex Series.
    • Finishing 7th in GT class and 26th overall is the Banner Racing #6 Corvette, driven by Tim Gaffney and Leighton Reese.
    • Finishing 11th in GT class and 31st overall is the Stevenson Motorsports #57 Corvette, driven by Vic Rice and Tommy Riggins.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - Poland and the Soviet Union sign an agreement in London, in which the government of the USSR recognizes that German-Soviet treaties of 1939 regarding Polish territories are now invalid. Diplomatic relations are restored. The USSR consents to a Polish army forming on Soviet territory.
  • 1941 - Britain issues a Note to the Polish Government, saying it does not recognize changes to its territory by Germany or the Soviet Union since August 1939.
  • 1941 - Adolf Hitler issues Directive No. 34, postponing for now the objectives of Directive 33 due to strong resistance in the center of the Russian front, where Guderian is involved in a delaying operation fighting for the town of Roslaul. The northern sector is to press on to surround Leningrad. The centre group is to go on the defensive. The south-east is to destroy forces west of the Dnieper river.
  • 1943 - (evening) 273 British bombers attack Remscheid, Germany, in the Ruhr. 80 percent of the area is destroyed, including over 100 industrial works. Production is ceased for three months.
  • 1943 - (night) British bombers attack Hamburg, Germany, again.
  • 1944 - The 1st Polish Armoured Division arrives in Normandy, France.
  • 1944 - American troops capture Avranches, France.
  • 1944 - In France, southwest of Bayeux, Operation Bluecoat begins. British Bomber Command and US 8th Air Force support the British 2nd Army on the American flank in Flanders.
  • 1945 - Just after midnight, Japanese submarine I-58 strikes USS Indianapolis with two torpedoes, sinking the ship in 12 minutes.
  • 1995 - Cuba issues five postage stamps depicting World War II combat planes.
  • 2009 - Alderney issues two postage stamps of World War II themes, Swordfish planes attacking a German submarine, and Skuas dive-bombing the Scharnhorst.

Video game history:

  • 1996 - Atari merges with JTS Corporation in US$80 million stock swap.
  • 2001 - Nintendo releases the Pokémon Crystal video game for the Game Boy Color in the US.
  • 2003 - At the Henry Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, California, G4 Media holds the G-Phoria Glow Awards show. Game of the Year award: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Best Live Action / Voice Performance: Jenna Jameson in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Best Adaptation: Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Hottest Character: Tina in Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball. Most Innovative Game: Animal Crossing.

Swedish history:

  • 1932 - (to August 14) The 10th Olympic Games are held in Los Angeles, California, USA. Sweden wins 9 gold, 5 silver, and 9 bronze medals.
  • 2007 - Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman dies, at age 89, at home on Fårö island, off the Baltic coast of Sweden.

Canadian coin history:

  • 2012 - Canadian Finance Minister announces delivery of 1-cent coins will continue until February 3, 2013.

USA coin history:

  • 2002 - Sotheby's in New York in conjunction with Stack's auctions the King Farouk specimen of the US 1933 Saint-Gaudens double eagle for $7,590,020, a world record for a single coin at auction. The $20 represents a $20 Federal Reserve note paid by auctioneer David Redden to Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore to officially monetize the coin.
  • 2003 - At the ANA World's Fair of Money in the Baltimore Convention Center, seven coin experts compare the 1913 Liberty Head 5-cent coin of relatives of George O. Walton to the four genuine examples, and declare it to be the authentic missing fifth coin.
  • 2008 - Heritage Numismatic Auctions auctions a 1944-S Lincoln steel cent graded MS-66 by NGC for US$373,450, a record price for any small cent.
  • 2008 - (to August 3) At the ANA World Fair of Money in Baltimore, Maryland, Heritage Auction Galleries conducts the main auction. Some highlights:

  • 1729 - City of Baltimore founded.
  • 1844 - First US yacht club organized, New York Yacht Club.
  • 1863 - US President Abraham Lincoln issues "eye-for-eye" order to shoot a rebel prisoner.
  • 1865 - Side-wheel steamship Brother Jonathan strikes a rock and breaks up off Crescent City, California. The ship was carrying $200,000 in army payroll, and possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars in gold coins and bars.
  • 1870 - Staten Island ferry Westfield burns, killing 100.
  • 1916 - German saboteurs blow up a munitions plant on Black Tom Island, New Jersey, USA.
  • 1928 - George Eastman demonstrates first color movie.
