Personal computer history:

  • 1987 - IBM introduces the PS/2 Model 25, with an 8 MHz Intel 8086, combined system unit with monitor, no hard drive, and reduced-size keyboard, starting at US$1350.
  • 1997 - Motorola and IBM introduce the PowerPC 740 and 750 processors, available in 233 and 266 MHz speeds. Price is about US$550-570 in 1000-unit quantities.
  • 2002 - Thailand issues a 4-baht postage stamp for National Communications Day, depicting a laptop computer.
  • 2004 - Thailand issues a 3-baht postage stamp promoting the Information Technology program, depicting a personal computer keyboard and monitor.
  • 2005 - Thailand issues a 3-baht postage stamp for National Communications Day, depicting a handheld computer.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1985 - The Disney Channel airs Ollie Johnson, a profile of the long-time Disney animator.
  • 2000 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Coyote Ugly to theaters in the USA.
  • 2001 - The Bear in the Big Blue House Show ceases performances in Disney-MGM Studios at Walt Disney World.
  • 2003 - Business Week magazine publishes the Interbrand ranking of the most valuable global brands. Disney is number seven.
  • 2003 - In Hollywood, California, Disney premieres the film Freaky Friday.
  • 2009 - The Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort opens in Florida, part of Disney's Vacation Club.
  • 2009 - Disney releases the film Race to Witch Mountain on DVD in the USA and Canada.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1957 - In Virginia, SCCA National car races are held.
    • Finishing 1st in B-Production class and 1st overall is Dick Thompson in the #211 Corvette.
    • Finishing 2nd in B-Production class and 2nd overall is Jim Jeffords in the #155 Corvette.
    • Finishing 3rd in B-Production class and 3rd overall is Fred Windridge in the #99 Corvette.
    • Finishing 4th in B-Production class and 4th overall is Bark Henry in the #114 Corvette.
    • Finishing 5th in B-Production class and 5th overall is Leonard Butscher in the #53 Corvette.

  • 1977 - The film High Rolling in a Hot Corvette is released to theaters in Australia.
  • 2001 - In Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada, Le Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres is held, Round 8 of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series, for GT/AGT/SGS classes.

  • 2002 - At Le Circuit de Trois-Rivieres in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada, Le Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres race is held, Round 7 of the Speedvision World Challenge GT Series.
    • Finishing 8th is the #35 Corvette Z06, driven by David Farmer.
    • In 13th place, but not finishing the race, is the #73 Corvette, driven by Phil McClure.

  • 2019 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, USA, the SportsCar Grand Prix race is held, round 9 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 4th in GT Le Mans class and 15th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C7.R driven by Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia.
    • Finishing 6th in GT Le Mans class and 17th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - The Polish government tells the Danzig Senate that any physical action against Polish customs officials in Danzig would be regarded as an act of violence against officials of the Polish state.
  • 1940 - In convoy HX-60 in the North Atlantic, a submarine torpedoes Newfoundland merchant ship Geraldine Mary.
  • 1941 - A large pocket of about 100,000 Soviet forces surrender in Uman.
  • 1942 - British Prime Minister Winston Churchill flies to Cairo, Egypt, removing General Claude Auchinleck as commander of the Middle East forces with General Sir Harold Alexander, and brings in General Sir Bernard Montgomery to run the 8th Army.
  • 1943 - The Soviet Voronezh Front under Nikolai Vatutin attacks the German 4th Panzer Army at the salient south of Kursk.
  • 1944 - Four American Flying Fortress bombers drop nine tons of high explosives on possible rocket launch sites at Watten, Wizernes, Mimoyecques, and Siracourt. Results are disappointing.
  • 1944 - General Harry Crerar, commander of the First Canadian Army, reports to the Canadian Military Headquarters in London that there is a severe shortage of infantry reserves.
  • 1944 - In France, the German 89th Infantry Division arrives at Verriéres Ridge to help defend it.
  • 1945 - August 6 is set as the date for dropping the first atomic bomb weapon in war, against Hiroshima, Japan. Little Boy is loaded into B-29 Superfortress No. 82.
  • 1945 - In Canada, the Prime Minister tells the House of Commons that no act of subversion or sabotage had been found before or during the war by the Japanese Canadians. However, disloyal Japanese Canadians would be deported to Japan, and no further Japanese immigration would be allowed. Also, a set quota of dispersed Japanese Canadians would be allowed to return to the west coast of British Columbia.
  • 1994 - Antigua & Barbuda issues four postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the D-Day invasion of Europe.
  • 1994 - Grenada issues four postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the D-Day invasion of Europe.
  • 1994 - Grenada Grenadines issues four postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the D-Day invasion of Europe.

Video game history:

  • 2009 - Activision releases the Wolfenstein video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.
  • 2010 - Konami releases the Castlevania: Harmony of Despair video game for the Xbox 360 in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1909 - The Confederation of Trade Unions calls for a general strike, involving approximately 300,000 factory workers.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1964 - The federal cabinet approves the adoption of the Arnold Machin effigy of Queen Elizabeth II for Canada's coins.
  • 1977 - In Vancouver, British Columbia, the Canadian Numismatic Association holds its annual convention.
  • 2004 - The Royal Canadian Mint launches the 2004 $1 coin with Olympic symbols in Vancouver, BC.

USA coin history:

  • 2003 - The US Mint launches the 2003 Missouri State quarter dollar coin.

Sports history:

  • 1910 - Philadelphia Athletics' Jack Coombs and Chicago White Sox' Ed Walsh pitch a 16-inning scoreless tie.
  • 1934 - New York Giants' player Mel Ott sets record of six runs in game and beats Philadelphia Phillies 21-4.
  • 1945 - Golfer Byron Nelson records most tournament wins (18) in a season.
  • 1945 - Boston Red Sox player Tom McBride is third to get six RBIs in an inning (4th).
  • 1953 - Vic Raschi sets pitcher record by driving in seven runs and wins 15-0.
  • 1979 - Opening game of the American Football Bundesliga played between Frankfurter Löwen and Düsseldorf Panther, first-ever league game of American football in Germany.
  • 1982 - New York Mets' Joel Youngblood singles in Chicago Cubs' day game, then singles for Montreal Expos in Philadelphia night game. (He was traded in between).
  • 1984 - Carl Lewis wins gold medal in 100m dash at Los Angeles Summer Olympics.
  • 1984 - Cliff Johnson sets a record with his 19th pinch hit home run.
  • 1985 - California Angels' Rod Carew gets his 3,000th hit.
  • 1985 - Phil Rizzuto Day, New York Yankees retire uniform number 10.
  • 1989 - Toronto Blue Jays' Dave Steib's perfect game is broken up in 9th inning with two outs by New York Yankees' player Roberto Kelly.
  • 1996 - The Games of the XXVI Olympiad conclude in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
  • 2010 - The New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez hits the 600th home run of his career, at Yankee Stadium. He is the 7th player to hit 600, and the youngest (age 35).

  • 2021 - 2020 Summer Olympics: Belarusian sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya is given political asylum in Poland through a humanitarian visa after attempts by the Belarus Olympic Committee to repatriate her against her will.
  • 2022 - At Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio, USA, National Football League Hall of Fame game: Las Vegas Raiders beats Jacksonville Jaguars by score 27-11.
  • 2022 - At Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Kansas City Royals beats Boston Red Sox by score 7-3.
  • 2022 - At Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Texas Rangers beats Chicago White Sox by score 3-2.

  • 1790 - Congress authorizes construction of ten vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws, prevent smuggling, and protect the collection of federal revenue, creating the Revenue Marine Service.
  • 1830 - Plans for the city of Chicago, Illinois are laid out.
  • 1864 - Land and naval action at Brazos Santiago, Texas.
  • 1886 - US Congress makes silver certificates legal tender, and authorizes $1, $2, and $5 notes in addition to the higher amounts.
  • 1892 - The United States Postal Service begins transport from the San Francisco sub-treasury in San Francisco, California, to the New York City sub-treasury, $20 million of gold coins in 500 boxes, on four rail cars.
  • 1922 - 13 million telephones in the U.S. and Canada go dead as the Bell System shuts down all its switchboards and switching stations at 6:25PM for one minute, in memory of Alexander Graham Bell.
  • 1925 - US marines leave Nicaragua after 13-year occupation.
  • 1927 - Peace Bridge between US and Canada is opened.

  • 2007 - At Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, NASA launches a Delta II rocket carrying the Mars Phoenix lander to explore the north of Mars.
  • 2009 - North Korean leader Kim Jong-il pardons two American journalists, who had been arrested and imprisoned for illegal entry earlier in the year, after former U.S. President Bill Clinton meets with Kim in North Korea.
  • 2019 - Ten people, including the perpetrator, are killed and 27 others injured in a mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, United States.
