  • 2000 - Palm introduces the Palm m100 handheld computer. It features 16 MHz Intel StrongARM processor, 2 MB RAM, 2 MB ROM, 2x2-inch monochrome LCD display, and Palm OS 3.5 operating system. Price is US$149.
  • 2000 - Palm introduces the Palm VIIx handheld computer. It features 8 MB RAM, Palm OS 3.5. Price is US$449.
  • 2000 - Palm unveils the Palm Vx Limited Edition handheld computer, a special version of the Palm V, with 8 MB RAM, available in Millenium Blue or Champagne color, for US$399 sold only through the Palm Web site.
  • 2004 - Microsoft releases the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 operating system.
  • 2006 - In San Francisco, California, Apple Computer holds its Worldwide Developers Conference, over five days.
  • 2006 - The August 7 issue of Business Week magazine presents a list of The 100 Top Brands in the world. Number 2 on the list is Microsoft.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1928 - Disney completes the second Mickey Mouse film, Gallopin' Gaucho.
  • 1931 - Disney completes the Mickey Mouse film Blue Rhythm. Minnie Mouse also appears.
  • 1946 - Disney delivers the commercial film A Feather in his Collar to the Community Chests of America.
  • 1964 - The Astro-Jets ride at Disneyland is renamed Tomorrowland Jets.
  • 1974 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film The Castaway Cowboy to theaters.
  • 1981 - Buena Vista releases the film Condorman to theaters in the US.
  • 1989 - Disney releases the film Ships for educational use. The film is part of the "Goofy's Field Trips" series.
  • 1991 - Antigua & Barbuda issues ten postage stamps depicting Disney characters playing golf.
  • 1992 - Disney releases the Bonkers animated short film Petal to the Metal to theaters.
  • 1992 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film 3 Ninjas to theatres.
  • 1994 - Jeffrey Katzenberg tells Michael Eisner he plans to leave Disney.
  • 1996 - Grenada issues ten postage stamps depicting scenes from Disney's film Hercules.
  • 1996 - Grenada issues eighteen postage stamps depicting scenes of Minnie Mouse in Hawaiian Holiday. Seventeen sequential stamps form a flip-book animation, showing Minnie hula dancing.
  • 1997 - Grenada Grenadines issues seven postage stamps depicting Winnie the Pooh characters.
  • 1997 - Grenada Grenadines issues ten postage stamps depicting scenes from Disney classic animated feature films.
  • 1998 - Buena Vista releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Armageddon to theaters in Great Britain.
  • 2006 - The August 7 issue of Business Week magazine presents a list of The 100 Top Brands in the world. Number 8 on the list is Disney.
  • 2008 - The US Postal Service issues the Art of Disney: Imagination postage stamps, four 42-cent stamps themed by films Steamboat Mickey, 101 Dalmatians, Cinderella, The Jungle Book.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1956 - Zora Arkus-Duntov's proposed racing Corvette is approved, and assigned project number XP-64.
  • 1976 - In Talladega, Alabama, an IMSA 120-mile race is held.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTO class and 2nd overall is the Corvette driven by Phil Currin.
    • Placing 10th in GTO class and 16th overall is the Corvette driven by Rick Hay.
    • Placing 12th in GTO class and 19th overall is the Corvette driven by Juan Olivera.
    • Placing 16th in GTO class and 23rd overall is the Corvette driven by Javier Garcia.

  • 1987 - In Bowling Green, Kentucky, the National Corvette Homecoming is held over three days. In the Corvette auction of 80 cars, 24 are sold. Some highlights:
    • 1957 red roadster US$20,000;
    • 1962 fuel-injected US$30,000;
    • 1967 convertible 427ci/435hp US$22,750.

  • 1989 - General Motors applies for a registered trademark for "ZR1".
  • 2004 - At the Road America Raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the 36th Annual Trans-Am Rumble at the Road race is held, round seven of the Motorock Trans-Am Series.
    • Finishing 2nd is the Derhaag Motorsports #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.
    • Finishing 5th is the Derhaag Motorsports #64 Corvette, driven by Johnny Miller.
    • Finishing 7th is the Lamers Motor Racing #36 Corvette, driven by Cliff Ebben.
    • Finishing 8th is the Simms Motorsports #24 Corvette, driven by Philip Simms.

  • 2004 - At the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, the EMCO Gears Mid-Ohio Road Racing Classic race is held, round seven of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series.
    • Finishing 10th in SGS class and 34th overall is the Michael Baughman Racing #46 Corvette, driven by Ray Mason and Mike Yeakle.
    • Finishing 10th in GT class and 35th overall is the Specter Werks #24 Corvette, driven by Tom Bambard and Jeff Nowicki.

    • Finishing 6th is the Banner Engineering #6 Corvette Z06, driven by Leighton Reese.
    • Finishing 8th is the 3R-Racing #73 Corvette Z06, driven by Phil McClure.

    • Finishing 1st in GT Le Mans class and 13th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin.
    • Finishing 6th in GT Le Mans class and 18th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C7.R driven by Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - Soviet Prime Minister Josef Stalin becomes Supreme Commander of Soviet Armed Forces.
  • 1942 - American Marines begin landing on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands.
  • 1943 - Canadian forces in Sicily are put into reserves.
  • 1943 - (evening) British Bomber Command begins new attacks on northern Italy. About 200 Lancasters hit Milan, Turin, and Genoa. Two planes do not return.
  • 1944 - In France, German Field Marshal Günther von Kluge launches Operation Luttich, a counterattack by Army Group B at Mortain to attempt the recapture of Avranches.
  • 1944 - The port facilities of the northern French city of Cherbourg, captured on June 27, are operational again.
  • 1944 - (night) In France, Günther von Kluge directs three panzer divisions to move from the British-Canadian front to attack the flank of the US advance on Le Mans.
  • 1944 - (2300 hours) 1019 British bombers attack five positions in advance of Canadian troops moving toward Falaise.
  • 1944 - (2300 hours) Günther von Kluge cancels move orders for two panther divisions, to oppose the Canadian attack on Falaise.
  • 1944 - (2343 hours) Operation Totalize begins, with the Canadian 1st Army staging a breakout from Verriéres toward Falaise. Major-General Guy Simonds launches Canadian 11 Corps in columns of tanks, engineers, anti-tank artillery, and infantry in armored personnel carriers.
  • 1965 - Togo issues two postage stamps depicting Josef Stalin, Franklin Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill at the Yalta Conference.
  • 1992 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of American Marines landing on Guadalcanal.
  • 1992 - The Solomon Islands issues fifteen postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Guadalcanal.
  • 2002 - The Solomon Islands issues four postage stamp marking the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Guadalcanal.

Video game history:

  • 2000 - Lifetime Television airs the film The Truth About Jane on television in the USA. A Nintendo game system is heard being played, but a Sega controller is shown.

Swedish history:

  • 1975 - Temperature in Stockholm is recorded at 100 degrees Farenheit, the hottest ever recorded in Sweden.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 2000 - Food Network's Food Fantasy TV show airs a segment on the Whirly Burger of some A & W restaurants in the 1950s and 60s.

USA coin history:

  • 1874 - Mint Superintendent James Pollock forwards first 20-cent designs to Mint Director Henry R. Linderman.
  • 1909 - Abram Piatt Andrew Jr. is appointed Mint director.
  • 1909 - New Lincoln cent dies are ordered to be created without the "V.D.B." initials.
  • 1954 - The last Booker T. Washington-George Washington Carver commemorative half dollars are minted.
  • 2010 - Bowers and Merena Auctions conducts the Boston Rarities Sale at the ANA World's Fair of Money in Boston. Some highlights:
    • 1794 Flowing Hair dollar, MS-64 NGC: US$1,207,500;
    • 1870-S Seated Liberty dollar, one of nine known, EF-40 PCGS: US$632,500;
    • 1854-O Coronet gold double eagle, one of 20 known, AU-55 PCGS: US$488,750.

Sports history:

  • 1954 - At the British Empire Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, a one-mile race is held between England's Roger Bannister and Australia's John Landy. Near the end, Landy in the lead looks for Bannister over his left shoulder, as Bannister passes Landy past his right shoulder, winning the race with a time of 3:58.8.
  • 1972 - Baseball Hall of Fame inducts Yogi Berra, Sandy Koufax, Lefty Gomez, and Early Wynn.
  • 1983 - First World Track and Field Championships.
  • 1983 - Grete Waitz of Norway wins first all-women Marathon (Helsinki, Finland).
  • 1984 - Japan beats US for Olympic gold medal in baseball.
  • 1984 - Jim Deshales becomes 1,000th playing New York Yankees.
  • 1985 - Major League Baseball players end their two-day mide-season strike. A five-year agreement between the union and owners is concluded.
  • 1987 - Bill Mazeroski's uniform jersey #9 is officially retired from active service by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
  • 1988 - A record five sacrifice flies are hit by the Seattle Mariners (D. Coles, A. Davis, J. Presley, J. Buhner, and R. Quinones) in a 12-7 victory over the Oakland Athletics.
  • 1990 - New York Yankees' player Kevin Mass sets record with 12th home run in first 92 at bats and becomes 21st to hit a ball into third deck of Seattle's Kingdome.
  • 1991 - US sets 400m relay record at 37.67 seconds.
  • 2001 - Black Betsy, Shoeless Joe Jackson's 40-ounce warped hickory bat, is won in a 10-day eBay auction. The $577,610 price tag is believed to be the largest amount ever paid for a baseball bat.
  • 2007 - At AT&T Park in San Francisco, California, San Francisco Giants' player Barry Bonds surpasses Hank Aaron as the all-time home run leader with his 756th home run. During the 10-minute celebration following the historic homer, a video message is played on the scoreboard in which Aaron congratulates the left fielder for breaking the 33-year old record.

  • 1991 - Court rules Manuel Noriega may access some secret US documents.
  • 1992 - Ocean liner Queen Elizabeth 2, en route from Martha's Vineyard to New York, hits an unchartered reef off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Damage is not serious, but the ship is out of service for months.
  • 1998 - The bombings of the United States embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya kill 224 people and injure over 4,500; they are linked to terrorist Osama Bin Laden, an exile of Saudi Arabia.
