Personal computer history:

  • 1981 - At the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, and in Boca Raton, Florida, IBM announces the IBM Personal Computer, model 5150. The PC features a 4.77 MHz Intel 8088 CPU, 16 kB RAM (expandable to 256 kB), 40 kB ROM, one 5.25-inch floppy drive (160 kB capacity), for US$1565. A fully loaded version with color graphics costs US$6000. Also offered as options are PC-DOS 1.0 (Microsoft's MS-DOS) for US$40, Microsoft BASIC, VisiCalc, UCSD Pascal, CP/M-86 for US$240, and Easywriter 1.0. IBM will sell the new computer to consumers through Sears, Roebuck & Co. and ComputerLand.
  • 1981 - IBM introduces the Microsoft Adventure game for the IBM PC, Microsoft's first non-language non-OS software product.
  • 1996 - Microsoft releases Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 Final Release, 32-bit version, for Windows 95.
  • 1996 - Gary Reback, lawyer for Netscape Communications, sends a letter to the Justice Department accusing Microsoft of anticompetitive behavior in its pursuit of market share in web browser software.
  • 1997 - Intel files a lawsuit against Digital Equipment, alleging patent infringement on fourteen computer technologies.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1927 - The eighth Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film, The Banker's Daughter, is completed.
  • 1929 - Walt Disney is granted a trademark for the use of the image of Mickey Mouse in motion pictures.
  • 1941 - The Disney Studio submits a list of proposed layoffs to the union.
  • 1958 - Buena Vista releases Disney's True-Life Adventure film White Wilderness, to theaters.
  • 1965 - Disneyland welcomes its 50-millionth guest, Mary Adams.
  • 1967 - The former Rocket to the Moon re-opens as the redesigned Flight to the Moon attraction opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
  • 1994 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film In the Army Now to theaters.
  • 1995 - The Disney Channel airs the Disney Channel Premiere Film The Four Diamonds.
  • 1995 - Michael Ovitz agrees to join Disney as president.
  • 1997 - Disney Interactive president Steve McBeth resigns.
  • 2000 - The Disney Cruise Line's ship Disney Magic begins a new seven-day cruise to the eastern Caribbean.
  • 2003 - Buena Vista Home Entertainment releases the film The Lizzie McGuire Movie on DVD for US$29.99 in the US.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1989 - American music video station VH-1 starts taking entries in its Corvette sweepstakes. For a $2 call to a 1-900 number, the caller has a chance to win 36 Corvettes, one of each model year made.
  • 1991 - Production of 1992 Corvettes begins.
  • 2005 - At Watkins Glen International raceway in Watkins Glen, New York, the CompUSA 200 race is held, round nine of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series.
    • Finishing 15th in GT class and 35th overall is the ASC Motorsports #55 Corvette, driven by Johnny Miller and Zach Arnold.
    • Finishing 21st in GT class and 43rd overall is the Stevenson Motorsports #57 Corvette, driven by Buddy Rice and Tommy Riggins.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - German Stuka plane strikes knock out one British radar station.
  • 1940 - German orders are given for a full-scale offensive against Great Britain in air attacks.
  • 1941 - US President Franklin Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill send a telegram to Soviet leader Josef Stalin proposing conference on supplies, to be held in Moscow.
  • 1941 - 54 British Blenheim bombers attack power stations near Cologne. Due to their success, power output is reduced by 10 percent for nine days. Nine planes are shot down.
  • 1941 - Wilhelm Keitel issues a supplement to Directive No. 34. Forces in the south-east are to press ahead against forces west of the Dnieper river, and to occupy the Crimean peninsula, Donets area, and Kharkov industrial area. Central forces are to hold position but assist on north and south flanks.
  • 1942 - (0900 hours) Italian planes from Sardinia make a second attack on convoy Pedestal.
  • 1942 - (1200 hours) Italian planes from Sardinia make a third attack on convoy Pedestal. Merchant ship Deucalion is hit by bombs and torpedoes, and later sinks off Cani Rocks near the Tunisian coast.
  • 1942 - In the Mediterranean, British destroyer Wolverine sinks Italian submarine Dagabur.
  • 1942 - In the Mediterranean, British destroyer Ithuriel sinks Italian submarine Cobalto.
  • 1942 - (evening) Italian planes from Sicily attack convoy Pedestal. Destroyer HMS Foresight is torpedoed, and carrier Indomitable is bombed and set on fire. The carrier force withdraws as planned.
  • 1942 - (evening) Italian and German submarines attack convoy Pedestal.
    • Italian submarine Axum torpedoes cruiser HMS Nigeria, jamming its rudder.
    • Italian submarine Alagi torpedoes cruiser HMS Kenya, damaging its bow.
    • Two torpedoes hit cruiser HMS Cairo, sinking it.
    • Tanker Ohio is hit, set on fire, but the fire is quickly put out.
    • Cargo ship Empire Hope is bombed and sunk.
    • Cargo ship Clan Ferguson is torpedoed and blows up.
    • Cargo ship Brisbane Star is torpedoed, and heads to Tunisia.

  • 1943 - In Rawalpindi, India, the Chemical Warfare Research Establishment begins two weeks of testing troop exposure to mustard gas.
  • 1943 - (evening) 477 British bombers attack Milan, Italy.
  • 1943 - (evening) 152 British bombers attack Turin, Italy.
  • 1944 - (early) Jacques Leclerc's French 2nd Armored Division captures Alençon, France.
  • 1944 - German Dr. Carl Friedrich Goerdeler is arrested by the Gestapo. He was to serve as Chancellor in a post-Nazi government.
  • 1944 - In Normandy, Canadian forces capture Clair Tizon and a bridgehead across River Laize, six miles from Falaise.
  • 1944 - Slovak leader Jósef Tiso declares martial law, and asks the German army to occupy the country on August 29.
  • 1944 - In England, Joseph Kennedy, Jr., and Lieutenant Wilford J. Willy board PB4Y-1 navy bomber loaded with 24,000 pounds of explosives. The plan is to bail out on the coast of England, and fly the plane with remote-control to the target of Germany's V3 super gun near Calais, France. The explosives accidentally detonate over England, killing Kennedy and Willy.
  • 1944 - (evening) 379 British bombers attack Brunswick, Germany. Little damage is done. About 27 planes are shot down.
  • 1944 - (evening) 297 British bombers attack Rüsselsheim, Germany. Little damage is done. About 20 planes are shot down.
  • 1945 - Soviet troops enter northern Korea.
  • 2005 - Guyana issues four postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of V-E Day.
  • 2005 - Guyana issues four postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of V-J Day.
  • 2005 - South Korea issues four postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Korea.

Video game history:

  • 2008 - Electronic Arts releases the Madden NFL 09 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.
  • 2010 - Comedy Central airs the Futurama TV show in the USA. A boy plays with a white handheld videogame system looking like a Nintendo DS.
  • 2011 - Nintendo drops the price of the Nintendo 3DS from $249.99 to $169.99 in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1632 - All troops of King Gustav Adolf, Axel Oxenstiern, general Banèr, and Duke Bernard join together.
  • 1772 - In Kristianstad, J.C. Toll begins a revolt.
  • 2004 - The population of Sweden reaches 9 million.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1963 - Operations for the Canada Coin News newspaper move to Canada, with Cale Jarvis as new publisher.
  • 1989 - The American Numismatic Association presents a Medal of Merit Award to the Royal Canadian Mint.
  • 2005 - The Royal Canadian Mint begins striking the 2005 $2 circulating coin.

USA coin history:

  • 1908 - The Denver Mint begins striking 1908-dated eagles (with motto).
  • 1937 - The first Battle of Antietam half dollar coin struck is presented to President Franklin Roosevelt.
  • 1947 - The Secret Service confiscates the 1933 Saint-Gaudens gold $20 double eagle of L.G. Barnard.
  • 1966 - The General Services Administration turns the New Orleans Mint over to the state of Louisiana.

Sports history:

  • 1876 - Madeline (US) beats Countess Dufferin (Canada) in fourth America's Cup.
  • 1879 - First National Archery Association tournament (Chicago, Illinois).
  • 1928 - Games of the IX Olympiad close in Amsterdam.
  • 1936 - Diver Marjorie Gestring is youngest Olympic gold medalist (13 years 268 days).
  • 1950 - New York Giants (NFL) beat Ottawa Roughriders (Canadian Football League) 20-6 in Ottawa, Canada.
  • 1960 - Ralph Boston of the US sets long jump record at 26 feet 11.25 inches.
  • 1964 - 10th time Mickey Mantle switch-hits home run in a game, one goes 502 feet.
  • 1969 - Boston Celtics team sold for an NBA record $6 million.
  • 1974 - Nolan Ryan strikes-out 19 Boston Red Sox players.
  • 1974 - New York Yankees' Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford become first teammates elected to Baseball Hall of Fame on the same day.
  • 1984 - Don Drysdale, Harmon Killebrew, Rick Ferrell, Luis Aparicio and Pee Wee Reese are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • 1986 - Don Baylor gets hits by a pitch for a record 25th time in a season.
  • 1986 - Boston Red Sox pitcher Tim Lollar gets a pinch-hit single.
  • 1988 - Boston Red Sox set American League consecutive home victories at 23.
  • 1994 - Major League Baseball players go on strike, eventually causing the cancellation of the World Series and delaying opening of the 1995 season.
  • 2007 - Tiger Woods wins PGA Championship, his 13th career major.
  • 2008 - Michael Phelps wins Olympic gold in 200-metre freestyle swimming, becoming only the fifth person to win nine career Olympic gold medals. His win also set a new world record time of 1.42.96.
  • 2008 - Togo wins its first ever Olympic medal, bronze in the men's single kayak slalom won by Benjamin Boukpeti.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Pittsburgh Pirates by score 5-3.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Minnesota Twins beats Los Angeles Angels by score 4-0.
  • 2022 - At Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Colorado Rockies beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 5-3.
