- 1985 - Microsoft and IBM sign a joint-development agreement to work together on future operating systems and environments.
- 1986 - IBM and Microsoft announce a Joint Development Agreement for operating system development. The agreement was signed in June.
- 2000 - Intel announces the 1.4 GHz Pentium 4 processor, incorporating 42 million transistors.
- 1927 - Film Booking Offices releases the Alice Comedy film Alice in the Big League to theaters.
- 1929 - The Silly Symphony film The Skeleton Dance premieres at the Carthay Circle Theater in Los Angeles, California.
- 1936 - The Silly Symphony film Toby Tortoise Returns is released to theaters.
- 1941 - The Mickey Mouse film Orphan's Benefit is released to theaters. This is a color re-make of the 1934 film of the same title. Donald Duck, Clara Cluck, Horace Horsecollar, Clarabelle Cow, and Goofy also appear.
- 1947 - The Donald Duck film Bootle Beetle is released.
- 1956 - The Carefree Corner guest registration area opens on Main Street in Disneyland.
- 1991 - The Gambia issues twelve postage stamps depicting various Disney characters playing Japanese games and sports.
- 2002 - The Official Disneyana Mystery convention is held at Walt Disney World, over three days.
- 2005 - Disney releases the film Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch on videocassette and DVD in the United Kingdom.
- 2008 - The Disney Channel Original Movie The Cheetah Girls One World premieres.
- 1957 - Peter Brock submits sketches for a new Corvette design to Bill Mitchell. Mitchell orders the research division of Styling to proceed with Brock's design.
- 1992 - The seventh round of the SCCA World Challenge Series is held at Road America.
- Finishing first place is Bill Cooper in the Dieline Motorsports Corvette.
- In second place is Jim Minneker in the Mercruiser / Bakeracing Corvette.
- In third place is R.K. Smith in a Dieline Motorsport / Doug Rippie Motorsports Corvette.
- In fourth place is Kim Baker in a Bakeracing Corvette.
- 1993 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, round 7 of the SCCA World Challenge series is held. Finishing 3rd is the Doug Rippie Motorsports #1 Corvette, driven by R.K. Smith.
- 1997 - The Corvettes at Carlisle 1997 Corvette show is held in Pennsylnavia, over three days. Attendance figures: 48,500 people, 3000 Corvettes, 1000 vendors, 600+ Corvettes for sale. The main theme is Callaway Corvettes, with a Speedster, SuperSpeedster, SuperNatural, Sledgehammer, several Twin-Turbos, LM, and Callaway Le Mans race car.
- 2003 - At the Carlisle Fairgrounds in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the Corvettes at Carlisle show is held, over three days. 58,380 people attend, with 2542 Corvettes in the show field, including a world record 54 1953 Corvettes. The auction of 200 Corvettes is 69 percent successful, selling US$3 million in cars.
- 2004 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, round seven of the American Le Mans Series is held.
- Finishing 1st in GTS class and 3rd overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C5-R, driven by Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta.
- Finishing 2nd in GTS class is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C5-R, driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell.
- 1940 - In the South Irish Sea off Milford Haven, Wales, German aircraft bomb Canadian merchant ship Thorold.
- 1942 - Brazil declares war on Germany.
- 1943 - Albert Speer reports to Adolf Hitler on the damage to the rocket research facilities at Peenemünde. Hitler orders that mass production of rockets be relocated to Blizna near Debice in Poland.
- 1944 - In Normandy, France, the Falaise Gap is declared officially closed.
- 1944 - Off the Norwegian coast, German submarine U-354 hits Canadian-built British-run escort carrier HMS Nabob with an acoustic torpedo. The ship, with a 32 square foot hole below the water line, makes it back to Scapa Flow base in Great Britain by August 27, but does not return to active service.
- 1944 - Adolf Hitler issues a directive to the German commander of Paris, France, to destroy the city.
- 1964 - France issues a postage stamp marking the 20th anniversary of liberation, depicting street fighting in Paris and Strasbourg.
- 1989 - A commission of the Lithuanian Parliament declares that Moscow's annexation of the country in 1940 was invalid, achieved by way of secret agreements between Stalin and Hitler.
- 2005 - Lesotho issues ten postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of V-E Day and V-J Day.
- 2005 - Liberia issues 16 postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of V-E Day and V-J Day.
- 1987 - Nintendo releases The Legend of Zelda video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System in the US. This is the first NES game with a battery-powered save feature.
- 2001 - Nintendo announces it is delaying the release of the GameCube in North America from November 5 to November 18, to increase the quantity of systems available at launch from 500,000 to 700,000.
- 2005 - Nintendo releases the Nintendogs: Lab & Friends video game for the Nintendo DS in the US and Canada. Also Dachshund & Friends, and Chihuahua & Friends.
- 2006 - EA Sports releases the Madden NFL 07 video game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Game Cube, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, and Game Boy Advance in the US.
- 2017 - Sony Interactive Entertainment releases the Uncharted: The Lost Legacy video game for the PlayStation 4 in the USA.
- 1973 - Design of a 5 kronor coin depicting the King's monogram is approved for use.
- 1914 - The Finance Act receives assent, giving power to suspend payments in gold, and to make paper money legal tender.
- 1990 - At the ANA convention in Seattle, the auction is conducted by Heritage Numismatic Auctions. Some highlights:
- 10 cents 1893 round-top '3' PCGS MS-64: US$15,000;
- 10 cents 1902 SP-67: US$10,000.
- 1785 - William Barton submits his outline for the establishment of a Mint to the Continental Congress.
- 1978 - US Senate passes Susan B. Anthony dollar legislation.
- 1990 - (to August 26) In Seattle, Washington, the ANA 99th Annual Convention is held. National Gold Exchange sells a 1796 quarter-dollar, MS-67 PCGS and NGC, for over $1 million. A $1 gold coin, 1855, Proof, sells for $400,000.
- 1851 - Yacht America wins first Royal Yacht Squadron Cup (America's Cup).
- 1917 - Pittsburgh Pirates play fourth straight extra inning game, Carson Bigbee sets record of 11 at-bats, they lose in 22 innings to Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 1934 - Boston Red Sox pitcher Wes Ferrell hits two home runs to beat Chicago White Sox 3-2 in 12.
- 1947 - First college team to beat an NFL team (All Stars-16, Chicago Bears-0).
- 1951 - Harlem Globetrotters play in Olympic Stadium, Berlin, Germany, before audience of 75,052.
- 1958 - Toronto Argonauts' Boyd Carter and Dave Mann combine for record 131-yard punt return.
- 1959 - Cincinnati Reds' Frank Robinson hits three consecutive home runs.
- 1960 - Gil Hodges sets National League righty home run record with number 352.
- 1965 - San Francisco Giants' pitcher Juan Marachal hits Los Angeles Dodgers' catcher John Roseboro on the head with his bat causing a 14-minute brawl.
- 1984 - Evelyn Ashford of US ties world women's mark for 100m, 10.76 seconds.
- 1984 - New York Mets' pitcher Dwight Gooden becomes the 11th rookie to strikeout 200.
- 1989 - Nolan Ryan strikes out his 5,000th batter.
- 2007 - The Texas Rangers score thirty runs in one game, setting the modern (post-1900) Major League Baseball record for most runs by one team in a single game, in a 30-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
- 2008 - Usain Bolt captures a third gold medal and a third world record at the Beijing Olympic Games, as Jamaica wins the men's 4x100m relay gold in world record of 37.10 seconds.
- 2022 - At MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA, National Football League pre-season game: New York Jets beats Atlanta Falcons by score 24-16.
- 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Milwaukee Brewers beats Los Angeles Dodgers by score 4-0.
