  • 1991 - In Finland, Linus Torvalds releases an operating system (Linux) for 80386-based computers, for free ftp download.
  • 1995 - Apple Computer releases the PowerBook 5300 series.
  • 2003 - Hewlett-Packard introduces the iPaq h1935 handheld computer. It features Windows Mobile 2003 operating system, Samsung 203 MHz processor, Secure Digital slot. Price is US$249.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1923 - Walt Disney writes to New York film distributer Margaret Winkler a second time, again proposing to produce a series of animated/live-action films.
  • 1985 - Disneyland welcomes three-year old Brooks Arthur Charles Burr as the park's 250-millionth visitor.
  • 1989 - The grand opening of the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular takes place at the Disney-MGM Studios at Walt Disney World.
  • 1990 - The NBC TV network airs the pilot Anna.
  • 1993 - Disney releases the film Darby O'Gill and the Little People on laserdisc for US$35.
  • 1993 - Disney releases the film Escape to Witch Mountain on laserdisc for US$35.
  • 1993 - Disney releases the film Herbie Rides Again on laserdisc for US$35.
  • 1993 - Disney releases the film The Shaggy Dog on laserdisc for US$35.
  • 1993 - Disney releases the film That Darn Cat! on laserdisc for US$35 and videocassette for US$19.99.
  • 1994 - Disney releases the animated feature film The Lion King to theaters in Australia.
  • 1995 - The Alpine Gardens area closes in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
  • 2000 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film The Crew to theaters in the USA.
  • 2006 - The Disney Channel airs the last Brandy & Mr. Whiskers TV show.
  • 2006 - The Disney Channel Original Movie The Cheetah Girls 2 premieres.
  • 2019 - Disney Cruise Line announces it will build a second cruise line destination in the Bahamas, at Lighthouse Point on the island of Eleuthera.
  • 2019 - Disney Cruise Line announces the name of its next cruise ship will be Disney Wish.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1985 - At the Road America racetrack in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, an IMSA Camel GT race is held. Hendrick Motorsports debuts the #40 Corvette GTP, driven by David Hobbs and Sarel ven der Merwe. A component failure during qualifying leaves the car starting in 17th place. After advancing to 6th place, the car retires after 275 miles, finishing in 33rd place.
  • 2000 - The Corvettes at Carlisle show is held, in Pennsylvania. 55,745 people attend the three-day show, with 2,224 Corvettes in the show, and 3,000 more in the parking lots. Concept cars on display include: CERV I, 1959 Sting Ray Racer, Mako Shark, Manta Ray, Astro II, Reynolds Aluminum Corvette, Aerovette, CERV III, Sting Ray III. Auction highlights:
    • 1991 yellow Callaway Speedster bid to $137,500, but did not meet reserve;
    • 1967 red convertible, 427/435 motor: $110,000;
    • 1962 maroon convertible 327/360 motor with fuel injection: $73,000;
    • 1967 coupe 427/400 motor, side exhaust: $63,500;
    • 1957 white 283/283 motor, fuel injection, three-speed manual: $58,000.

  • 2001 - At the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, round six of the American Le Mans Series is held.
    • Finishing 1st in GTS class and 10th overall is the Corvette Racing #14 Corvette C5-R, driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTS class and 11th overall is the Corvette Racing #15 Corvette C5-R, driven by Andy Pilgrim and Kelly Collins.

  • 2001 - At the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, Round 9 of the Trans-Am Series For the BFGoodrich Tires Cup is held.
    • Finishing 2nd is the Justin Bell Motorsports Experience #40 Corvette, driven by Justin Bell.
    • Finishing 4th is the Banner Engineering #66 Corvette, driven by Leighton Reese.
    • Finishing 7th is the LG Motorsports / G2 Performance Parts #28 Corvette, driven by Lou Gigliotti.
    • Finishing 14th is the Preformed Line Products #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.
    • Finishing 15th is the Cenweld Corporation / McNichols #23 Corvette, driven by Bob Ruman.
    • Finishing 17th is the Stonier Transportation #59 Corvette, driven by Simon Gregg.
    • Finishing 18th is the Russell Automotive Center #56 Corvette, driven by Tom Sloe.
    • Finishing 22nd is the Power Technologies #30 Corvette, driven by Dan Furey.
    • In 24th place, but not finishing the race, is the ROH Alloy Wheels #6 Corvette, driven by Joey Scarallo.
    • In 29th place, but not finishing the race, is the Beck Engineering #32 Corvette, driven by Steve Beck.

  • 2003 - Guyana issues five postage stamps to mark the 50th anniversary of the Corvette. $150 stamps depict 1963, 1964, 1966, 1969 models. $450 stamp depicts 1971 model.
  • 2006 - In Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the Corvettes at Carlisle show is held, over three days. About 50,000 attend, with 5000+ Corvettes in the parking lot, 1000 Corvettes for sale, 1300 vendors, and 131 Grand Sport Corvettes on display.
  • 2007 - At the Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, the Grand Prix of Mosport race is held, round eight of the SPEED GT Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st is the Whelen Engineering #30 Corvette driven by Eric Curran.
    • Finishing 5th is the Blackdog Racing #12 Corvette driven by Brian Kubinski.
    • Finishing 6th is the #28 Corvette, driven by Lou Gigliotti.
    • Finishing 7th is the LG Motorsports #87 Corvette driven by Doug Peterson.
    • Finishing 8th is the Blackdog Racing #34 Corvette driven by Tony Gaples.
    • Finishing 16th is the Whelen Engineering #31 Corvette, driven by Sonny Whelen.
    • In 22nd place, but not finishing the race, is the Foster Motorsports #17 Corvette driven by Rob Foster.

  • 2019 - At the Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia, USA, the Michelin GT Challenge at VIR race is held, round 10 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 3rd in GT Le Mans class and 3rd overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C7.R driven by Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia.
    • Finishing 4th in GT Le Mans class and 4th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - German battleship Schleswig-Holstein arrives at Danzig harbor.
  • 1939 - In London, an Agreement of Mutual Assistance is signed by Poland and Great Britain. If Germany attacks either nation, the other will aid in its defence.
  • 1939 - Japan breaks off talks of alliance with Germany.
  • 1939 - (1500 hours) Adolf Hitler issues Order X, for partial mobilization in preparation for war, with an attack on Poland scheduled for August 26.
  • 1939 - (1630 hours) Adolf Hitler learns of the signing of the British guarantee of Poland.
  • 1939 - (1800 hours) Italian Ambassador Bernardo Attolico informs Adolf Hitler that Italy could at present not join Germany in war. Adolf Hitler postpones Plan White to the following week. Commando units are notified of the delay.

  • 1940 - (evening) Eighty British bombers attack Berlin, in retaliation for the previous night's bombing of London.
  • 1941 - Allied forces land on Spitsbergen, Norway. Canadian and Norwegian forces destroy the Spitsbergen coal mines, denying 500,000 tons of coal to Germany. The local Russian and Norwegian population is evacuated.
  • 1941 - British and Soviet forces occupy Persia.
  • 1942 - Japanese forces launch amphibious operation with about 1200 men on Milne Bay, New Guinea.
  • 1943 - German warships attack and sink two Swedish trawlers in Danish waters.
  • 1944 - In Italy, the Canadian 1st Infantry Division begins its attack on the Gothic Line, running across Italy roughly between Pisa and Resaro.
  • 1944 - Jacques Leclerc's French 2nd Armored Division enters Paris, France.
  • 1944 - (1530 hours) German commander of Paris, France, Von Choltitz surrenders the city to Allied armies.
  • 1944 - Finland requests an armistice with the Soviet Union.
  • 1944 - French General Charles de Gaulle enters liberated Paris.
  • 1944 - (evening) 328 British bombers successfully attack eight gun batteries near Brest, France.
  • 1944 - (2359 hours) At the Metauro River in Italy, British, Canadian, and Polish artillery begin a bombardment across the river in advance of a Canadian crossing.
  • 1994 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Paris.
  • 2004 - Brazil issues four postage stamps depicting Brazil in World War II.

Video game history:

  • 1983 - Bally Manufacturing agrees to acquire the American coin-operated assets of Sega Enterprises.
  • 1999 - At the Sumida Triphony Hall in Tokyo, Japan, Capcom stages a Biohazard concert with the New Japan Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.
  • 2000 - Universal Pictures releases the film Bring It On to theaters in the USA. The video game Twisted Metal is played on a PlayStation.
  • 2003 - Nintendo releases the F-Zero video game for the GameCube in the US.
  • 2003 - Nintendo releases the Pokémon Pinball Ruby & Sapphire video game for the Game Boy Advance in the US.
  • 2006 - The film Dead or Alive is released to theaters in the US, based on the video game series.
  • 2009 - Nintendo releases the Metroid Prime Trilogy for the Nintendo Wii in the USA. The pack includes Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2 Echoes, and Metroid Prime 3 Corruption.
  • 2009 - Eidos releases the Batman: Arkham Asylum video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.
  • 2009 - Square Enix releases the Dissidia: Final Fantasy video game for the PlayStation Portable in the USA.
  • 2017 - EA Sports releases the Madden NFL 18 video game for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1631 - Tilly crosses the frontier into Saxony.
  • 1634 - Combined Spanish and Imperial troops breach walls of Nördlingen.
  • 1956 - Anders Franzén locates the sunken 1628 Vasa ship at the bottom of Stockholm harbor, off Beckholmen island, in 110 feet of water. Franzén had been searching the Stockholm harbor for five years.
  • 1960 - (to September 11) The 17th Olympic Games are held in Rome, Italy. Sweden wins 1 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 1988 - A & W Concentrate Company applies for a trade-mark on an image of their oval A & W logo with stylized "Cream Soda" underneath in red and blue.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1973 - Assistant Deputy Postmaster Garth Campbell announces details of the $450 million commemorative coin issues planned for the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. 28 coins are to be issued with face values of $5 and $10.

USA coin history:

  • 1836 - Mint Director Robert M. Patterson forwards a tin impression of a proposed Gobrecht dollar to Treasury Secretary Levi Woodbury.
  • 2004 - An attorney for Joan Switt Langbord (daughter and inheritor of Israel Switt) and sons informs US Mint attorneys of the existence of ten 1933 Saint-Gaudens gold double eagles found in safety deposit box.
  • 2008 - The US Mint releases the 2008 Alaska quarter dollar coin to circulation.

Sports history:

  • 1875 - Matthew Webb becomes first to swim English Channel (21 hours 45 minutes).
  • 1886 - First international polo meet (US versus England).
  • 1888 - Henry Slocum wins US Lawn Tennis Association singles title.
  • 1904 - Jim Jefferies knocks out Jack Munroe and retains boxing heavyweight title.
  • 1908 - Allen Winter wins US first $50,000 trotting race.
  • 1920 - First US woman to win in Olympics (Ethelda Bleibtrey).
  • 1921 - New York Yankees' pitcher Harry Harper hits three batters in an inning, tying record.
  • 1922 - Chicago Cubs beat Philadelphia Phillies 26-23 in highest scoring major-league baseball game.
  • 1924 - Washington Senators' Walter Johnson second no-hitter beats Saint Louis Browns, 2-0 in 7 innings.
  • 1925 - Helen Willis wins her third straight US Lawn Tennis Open.
  • 1936 - Three Boston Braves' players hit twice in an inning getting two hits each.
  • 1946 - Ben Hogan wins the PGA championship.
  • 1950 - Sugar Ray Robinson knocks out Jose Basora to win middleweight boxing title.
  • 1952 - Detroit Tigers' Virgil Trucks second no-hitter of year, beats New York Yankees, 1-0.
  • 1960 - (to September 11) The Games of the XVII Olympiad are held in Rome, Italy.
  • 1960 - AFL begins placing players' names on back of their jerseys.
  • 1967 - Minnesota Twins' Dean Chance second no-hitter of month beats Cleveland Indians, 2-1.
  • 1968 - New York Yankees' outfield Rocky Colavito pitches 2 2/3 innings and beats the Detroit Tigers 6-5; he played right field in the second game and hit a home run.
  • 1969 - Detriot Lions beat Boston Patriots 22-9 in Montréal (NFL expo).
  • 1974 - Los Angeles Aztecs defeat Miami Toros to win NASL cup.
  • 1976 - New York Yankees beat Minnesota Twins 5-4 in 19 innings.
  • 1979 - California Angels trounce Toronto Blue Jays, 24-2.
  • 1983 - Triple A baseball's Louisville breaks one million fan mark.
  • 1985 - New York Mets' Dwight Goodin becomes youngest pitcher to win 20 games, at age 20 years 9 months 9 days).
  • 1986 - At Tiger Stadium, Oakland Athletics' rookie Mark McGwire hits his first major league home run off of Walt Terrell.
  • 1990 - Li Hui Rong of China sets the triple jump women's record (47 feet 8.5 inches).
  • 1991 - Carl Lewis runs 100m in 9.86 seconds.
  • 2005 - Saint Louis Cardinals' pitcher Tony LaRussa wins his 2,195th career game, moving into third place in all-time major league history.

Space exploration history:

  • 1835 - The New York Sun publishes the first of six articles about life discovered on the Moon, attributed to astronomer John Herschel.
  • 1981 - Voyager 2's closest approach to Saturn (63,000 miles/100,000 km).
  • 1988 - NASA launches space vehicle S-214.
  • 1989 - Voyager 2 flies past Neptune.
  • 2009 - South Korea launches its first space rocket, though a scientific satellite it was carrying failed to enter into its proper orbit.

Extreme weather history:

  • 2017 - (to August 30) Hurricane Harvey strikes the United States as a Category 4 hurricane, causing catastrophic damage to the Houston metropolitan area, mostly due to record-breaking floods. At least 108 deaths are recorded, and total damage reaches $125 billion, making Harvey the costliest natural disaster in United States history, tied with Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

USA history:

  • 1835 - The New York Sun publishes the first of six articles about life discovered on the Moon, attributed to astronomer John Herschel.
  • 1862 - US Secretary of War authorizes General Rufus Saxton to arm 5,000 slaves.
  • 1864 - Petersburg Campaign - Battle of Ream's Station.
  • 1916 - US Congress establishes the National Park Service as part of the Department of the Interior.
  • 1921 - US signs peace treaty with Germany.
  • 1925 - Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters organizes (Harlem, New York).
  • 1943 - US forces overrun New Georgia in Solomon Islands.
  • 1950 - US President Harry Truman orders army to seize control of railroad to avert a strike.
  • 1967 - George Lincoln Rockwell, head of American Nazi Party, is assassinated.
  • 1983 - US and USSR sign US$10 billion grain pact.
