  • 2000 - Sony unveils the Clie handheld computer in New York. It features Palm OS, monochrome display, Memory Stick slot, 8 MB RAM, 8 MB Memory Stick. Price is US$399; weight is 4 ounces. "Clie" stands for Communication Link Information Entertainment.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1925 - Disney completes the 22nd Alice Comedy film, Alice the Jail Bird.
  • 1955 - The Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship and Restaurant opens in Fantasyland at Disneyland.
  • 1964 - Buena Vista generally releases the film Mary Poppins to theaters.
  • 1982 - The Captain Hook's Galley restaurant in Fantasyland at Disneyland closes.
  • 1985 - The Disney Channel airs the last Big Bands at Disneyland show.
  • 1992 - The Dinosaurs Live parade at the Disney-MGM Studios makes its last run.
  • 1997 - The syndicated TV series Aladdin ends.
  • 1997 - The syndicated TV series Darkwing Duck ends.
  • 1998 - The Disney Channel Original Movie Brink! airs.
  • 2006 - Disney releases the DisneyToon Studios animated film Brother Bear 2 to home video.
  • 2011 - Aulani, A Disney Resort Resort & Spa resort opens in the Ko Olina Resort & Marina in Oahu, Hawaii. Includes 359 hotel rooms and 460 Disney Vacation Club villas.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1976 - At the Mid-Ohio raceway in Lexington, Ohio, an IMSA six-hour race is held.
    • Finishing 4th in GTO class and 4th overall is the Corvette driven by Mike Brockman.
    • Finishing 6th in GTO class and 7th overall is the Corvette driven by Phil Currin.
    • Finishing 13th in GTO class and 19th overall is the Corvette driven by Jim Moyer and Richard Ortman.
    • Placing 16th in GTO class and 22nd overall is the Corvette driven by Rick Hay and Gary Witzenburg.
    • Placing 20th in GTO class and 36th overall is the Corvette driven by Clark Howey and David Crabtree.
    • Placing 25th in GTO class and 41st overall is the Corvette driven by Bill Arnold.

  • 1996 - The 15th annual Corvettes at Carlisle begins, running over the weekend at the Carlisle Fairgrounds in Pennsylvania. Over 3,500 Corvettes and 46,000 people attend. 400 members of the ZR-1 Registry club show their cars.
  • 1996 - At the Corvettes at Carlisle auction, a 1967 Tuxedo Black convertible with 427/435 motor and 16,000 original miles sells for US$75,000.
  • 2003 - The National Corvette Museum opens an exhibit dedicated to the life and cars of Bill Mitchell.
  • 2003 - At the National Corvette Museum, the Corvette Hall of Fame Induction is held. Inductees this year are Noland Adams and Robert S. Morrison. Adams is a long-time Corvette historian. Morrison developed the molded fiberglass process for the Corvette body.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - The British Admiralty assumes control of all British-registered merchant ships.
  • 1944 - (2000 hours) The Slovak army of 60,000 mutinies against the government.
  • 1945 - A list of 24 defendants to stand trial for war crimes at Nuremberg is published.
  • 2002 - A 78-foot long Japanese midget submarine is found in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, believed to have been sunk by the US Navy two hours before the Japanese attack in 1941.

Video game history:

  • 1997 - 3Dfx Interactive files a lawsuit in California's Santa Clara County Superior Court against Sega Enterprises and NEC over the cancellation of a contract with 3Dfx. 3Dfx was to provide a 3D graphics component for Sega's next video game system.
  • 2005 - Microsoft and Pepsi launch the "Every 10 Minutes" promotion, in which purchasers of Pepsi, Mountain Dew, and Sierra Mist can enter a code on a Web site to be entered in drawings for an Xbox 360 system or a free video game. Up to 9222 Xbox 360 systems are available to be won in the contest.
  • 2006 - THQ releases the Saints Row video game for the Xbox 360 in the USA.
  • 2006 - NIS releases the Disgaea 2 video game for the PlayStation 2 video game in the USA.
  • 2006 - Namco Bandai releases the Xenosaga Episode III: Also Sprach Zarathustra for the PlayStation 2 in the USA.
  • 2006 - Codemasters releases the Dance Factory video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2017 - Take Two Interactive releases the XCOM 2: War of the Chosen video game for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the USA.
  • 2017 - Sega releases the Yakuza Kiwami video game for the PlayStation 4 in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1982 - Ingrid Bergman dies of cancer in London, England, on her 67th birthday.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 1988 - A & W Concentrate Company's image of their oval A & W logo with stylized "Cream Soda" underneath in red and blue is registered as a trade-mark.
  • 1989 - The A & W Concentrate Company is granted a registered trademark for an image with text "A & W CREAM SODA" as applied to soft drinks.

USA coin history:

  • 1999 - (to August 30) In New York City, New York, Auctions by Bowers and Merena conducts the sale of The Walter H. Childs Collection. The Sultan of Muscat Class I specimen of the US 1804 $1 coin graded PR-68 sells for US$4,140,000, a world record price for a coin.
  • 2008 - The US Mint officially launches the 2008 Alaska state quarter dollar at the Alaska Satte Fair in Palmer, Alaska.
  • 2011 - The US Mint releases the 2011 Vicksburg National Military Park quarter dollar to circulation.
  • 2012 - The US Mint launches the 2012 Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park quarter, in Volcano, Hawaii.

Sports history:

  • 1844 - First white vs Indian lacrosse game in Montreal, Indians win.
  • 1885 - Boxing's first heavyweight title fight with 3-ounce gloves and 3-minute rounds is fought between John L Sullivan and Dominick McCaffrey.
  • 1885 - Philadelphia Phillies' pitcher Charlie Ferguson no-hits Providence 1-0.
  • 1889 - First American International professional lawn tennis contest (Newport, Rhode Island).
  • 1908 - New York gives a ticker tape parade to returning US Olympians from London.
  • 1909 - World's first airplane race held in Rheims, France. Glenn Curtis (USA) wins.
  • 1937 - Philadelphia Athletics' Bob Johnson is second to get six RBIs in an inning (first).
  • 1950 - International Olympic Committee votes admission to Federal Republic of Germany and Japan in 1952.
  • 1967 - New York Yankees' longest day, Boston Red Sox take first game 2-1 in nine innings, New York Yankees win second game 4-3 in 20 innings; a total of 8 hours and 19 minutes.
  • 1977 - Saint Louis Cardinals' Lou Brock eclipses Ty Cobb's 49-year-old career stolen bases record at 893 as San Diego Padres win 4-3.
  • 1985 - Don Baylor of the New York Yankees is hit by a pitch for the 190th time breaking the American League record established by Minnie Minoso.
  • 1986 - Heike Drechsler of German Democratic Republic ties world women's 200m mark (21.71s).
  • 1990 - Seattle Mariners becomes first team to have father-son teammates, signing Ken Griffey to play with son Ken Griffey Junior.
  • 2004 - Michael Schumacher wins a record seventh world championship title by finishing second in the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Diego Padres beats San Francisco Giants by score 6-5.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats Philadelphia Phillies by score 13-7.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Angels beats New York Yankees by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Milwaukee Brewers beats Pittsburgh Pirates by score 7-5.

  • 1988 - USSR launches three cosmonauts (Valery Polyakav, one Afghan) to station Mir.
  • 2009 - NASA launches the US shuttle Discovery from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida for a mission to the International Space Station (ISS), with seven astronauts on board.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1916 - Tidal wave in port of Santo Somingo, Dominican Republic. US cruiser Memphis is wrecked on coral reefs and run aground. All 43 crew on board die.
  • 2005 - At least 1,836 are killed, and severe damage is caused along the U.S. Gulf Coast, as Hurricane Katrina strikes coastal areas from Louisiana to Alabama, and travels up the entire state of Mississippi (flooding coast 31 feet/10 m), affecting most of eastern North America.

USA history:

  • 1776 - Americans withdraw from Manhattan to Westchester.
  • 1786 - Shay's Rebellion in Springfield, Massachusetts begins.
