Since 1995, I have been collecting information on a variety of topics, creating several timelines of history. Personal computer history:

  • 1956 - IBM introduces the IBM 350 Disk File, the first hard drive, as part of the IBM RAMAC 305 computer. The drive features fifty double-sided 24-inch diameter platters, served by one arm and one read/write head. Capacity is about 5 MB, and transfer rate is 8800 characters per second.
  • 1981 - Control Data introduces the Control Data 110 microcomputer. Price is US$4995.
  • 1985 - Steve Jobs informs John Sculley of five Apple employees would will resign to join him in his new company. They are Bud Tribble, Dan'l Lewin, George Crow, Rich Page, and Susan Barnes.
  • 1988 - IBM introduces the IBM PS/2 Model 30 286, using the AT-bus. It features a 10 MHz 286, 512 kB RAM, VGA, and 20 MB hard drive.
  • 2000 - Apple Computer releases the Mac OS X Public Beta. Price is US$29.95.
  • 2002 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. A personal computer appears.
  • 2011 - At Microsoft's annual developer conference, Microsoft distributes 5000 Samsung tablet computers running a test version of Windows 8 operating system.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1959 - The Rainbow Mountain Stage Coaches attraction at Disneyland closes.
  • 1959 - The Conestoga Wagons attraction in Frontierland at Disneyland closes.
  • 1970 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled Cristobalito, the Calypso Colt.
  • 1978 - The NBC TV network airs the special NBC Salutes the 25th Anniversary of the Wonderful World of Disney.
  • 1979 - Three leading animators (including Don Bluth) leave Walt Disney Productions.
  • 1984 - Frank Wells meets with Ray Watson at Disney. Watson offers Wells a job heading business affairs in the film division. Wells considers the offer an insult, and turns it down.
  • 1986 - ABC begins airing the TV show The Wuzzles.
  • 1987 - The Disney Channel premieres the College Bowl '87 game show.
  • 1988 - The CBS TV network airs the special Roger Rabbit & the Secrets of Toon Town.
  • 1991 - The Walt Disney Company acquires Discover magazine.
  • 1996 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film The Rich Man's Wife to theaters in the US
  • 2002 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Moonlight Mile to theaters in the US.
  • 2005 - Disney releases the film Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch on videocassette and DVD in the Netherlands.
  • 2012 - Disney releases the film Barfi! to theaters in Kuwait and New Zealand.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1964 - At Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the Road America 500 race is held. Finishing 3rd overall is the Corvette Grand Sport #005 driven by Jim Hall, Hap Sharp, and Roger Penske.
  • 1973 - In Frankfurt, Germany, the 45th German Motor Show is held. General Motors show the Corvette 2-Rotor (project XP-987GT), with a 399-ci 180-hp two-rotor RC2-266 rotary engine, red exterior steel body, and leather interior.
  • 1980 - In Columbus, Ohio, the Bob McDorman Chevrolet 1980 Concours VII show is held, over two days. About 20,000 people attend.
  • 1997 - Mid America Designs hosts Funfest '97, with 3,400 Corvettes and 20,000 people attending.
  • 2001 - In San Bernardino, California, the Route 66 Rendezvous event is held, over four days. TV show Route 66 is inducted into the Cruisin' Hall of Fame, with Martin Milner accepting the award. 2108 cars are registered, 535,000 people attend.
  • 2003 - At the Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, the Sunoco 94 Mosport 3 Hour race is held, round seven of the Grand-Am Cup series.
    • Finishing 2nd in GSI class and 2nd overall is the Powell Motorsport #11 Corvette Z06, driven by Devon Powell and Doug Goad.
    • Finishing 7th in GSI class and 7th overall is the Powell Motorsport #02 Corvette Z06, driven by Mike Weinberg and Jeff Altenburg.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - French ground forces enter the suburbs of Saarbrüken, Germany, shelling the city.
  • 1939 - French mine-layer Pluton blows up in port at Casablanca, with several hundred casualties.
  • 1939 - The British Ministry of Information issues a communiqué stating the belief that Germany may try to build submarine and air bases in Central and South America.
  • 1939 - Moscow radio orders all Soviet merchant ships bound for England to return home.
  • 1939 - British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain tells the House of Commons that Britain and France agree "that there can be no peace until the menace of Hitlerism has been finally removed.".
  • 1939 - German Chancellor Adolf Hitler's headquarters announces it will use all armed means against open cities, market places, and villages in which the civilian population engages in guerrilla warfare resistance.
  • 1939 - French Premier Edouard Daladier assumes functions of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Presidency of Council in Ministry of National Defence and War.
  • 1939 - In Poland, the Polish army surrounded south of Radom is eradicated.
  • 1940 - The Italian 10th Army of over 200,000 men, commanded by Marshal Graziani, crosses the Libyan frontier into Egypt, to gain control of the Suez Canal. They venture fifty miles in, and set up defences at Sidi Barrani. This act begins the war in North Africa.
  • 1940 - The Japanese Foreign Minister Yosuke Matsuoka and German aide to Ribbentrop Heinrich Stahmer reach a general agreement for a joint alliance.
  • 1942 - South of Greenland, German submarine U-91 torpedoes Royal Canadian Navy destroyer Ottawa. 114 die, 69 are saved.
  • 1943 - German forces evict American troops from Persano, near Salerno, Italy.
  • 1943 - A German Fritz X guided aerial bomb cripples British carrier Uganda off Salerno, Italy.
  • 1943 - Allies begin a six-day aerial bombing of Potenza, Italy, resulting in an estimated 2000 civilian casualties.
  • 1943 - (evening) US General Mark Clark prepares for the possible evacuation of Salerno, Italy.
  • 1943 - (evening) US 82nd Airborne Division drops paratroops in the US sector near Salerno, Italy.
  • 1944 - US B-24 Liberator bombers destroy the I.G. Farben chemical works at Auschwitz. 55 planes are damaged, 9 are shot down.
  • 1944 - British General Bernard Montgomery tells Canadian General Harry Crerar to also capture Calais and Dunkirk, France, quickly.
  • 1944 - British Bomber Command makes a daytime air raid on Osnabruck, Germany, causing extensive damage to rail facilities.
  • 1944 - British General Bernard Montgomery orders the Canadian 1st Army to clear the Sheldt of German defenders.
  • 1944 - (2345 hours) The Algonquin Regiment rifle companies of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division cross the double canals of Leopold and Lys, entering Molentje near Moerkerke, Belgium.
  • 1965 - Great Britain issues eight postage stamps marking the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
  • 1996 - Nauru issues two postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • 2000 - Mongolia issues a postage stamp depicting the war years 1939-45 in Mongolia.

Video game history:

  • 1983 - Nintendo releases the Super Mario Bros. video game in arcades in Japan.
  • 1992 - A US Court of Appeals rules that reverse engineering is a legitimate business practice. The ruling comes in the Nintendo versus Atari copyright infringement case. The court rules, however, that Atari had infringed Nintendo copyrights for other reasons.
  • 1993 - Acclaim Entertainment releases the Mortal Kombat video game for the Super NES, Genesis, Game Boy, and Game Gear game systems in the US. Price for the Super NES is US$74.99, for the Game Boy US$34.99. Acclaim spent US$10 million on pre-release marketing, declaring the day "Mortal Monday".
  • 1999 - In Japan, Sony announces the official name of the successor to the PlayStation is PlayStation 2. The system will be released first in Japan on March 4, priced at 39,800 yen (about US$370). It will include a DualShock 2 Analog Controller, 8 MB Memory Card, 24x CD-ROM / 4x DVD ROM drive. Future plans for the system include Web site browsing, new game downloads to a hard drive, downloads of music and films, and interactive online versions of TV game shows.
  • 2002 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. A scene takes place in a video game arcade. Two characters play a "Virtua-Stud" virtual reality video game. In an arena battle, a giant ape throws barrels down steps and ladders, a reference to the Donkey Kong video game.
  • 2004 - Konami releases the Gradius V video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2005 - Electronic Arts releases the Burnout: Revenge video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - EA Games releases the Burnout Legends video game for the PlayStation Portable in the USA.
  • 2005 - Tecmo releases the Tecmo Classic Arcade video game for the Xbox in the US. Included games are: Solomon's Key, Bomb Jack, Star Force, Rygar, Tecmo Bowl.
  • 2006 - Nintendo releases the DS Lite handheld video game system in onyx (black) and coral (pink) colored cases.
  • 2011 - Sony Computer Entertainment releases the God of War: Origins Collection video game for the PlayStation 3 in the US.
  • 2011 - Natsume releases the Harvest Moon: The Tale of Two Towns video game for the Nintendo DS and 3DS in the US.
  • 2011 - EA Sports releases the NFL 12 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.

Canadian coin history:

  • 2006 - In Long Beach, California, Heritage Auction Galleries holds the Ancient and World Coins Signature Auction at the California Coin Expo, over four days. Of the top twelve prices in the auction, eleven are Canadian. Some highlights:
    • 10 cents 1936 dot ICCS SP-63: US$115,000;
    • 50 cents 1914 PCGS MS-66: US$46,000;
    • 50 cents 1921 PCGS MS-65: US$115,000 (CDN$128,000);
    • $1 1947 ML PCGS MS-67: US$46,000.

Sports history:

  • 1842 - In the USA, Chris Lilly and Tom McCoy bare-fist fight for 119 rounds, when McCoy falls dead in the ring, after 2 hours 43 minutes. During the fight he had received 100 square blows, and was knocked down 81 times.
  • 1849 - First US prize fight fatality (Tom McCoy).
  • 1883 - Cleveland Blues' pitcher Hugh Daily no-hits Philadelphia Phillies 1-0.
  • 1925 - Brooklyn Dodgers' Dazzy Vance no-hits Philadelphia Phillies, 10-1.
  • 1927 - Waite Hoyt becomes the only 20-game winner of the 1927 New York Yankees.
  • 1932 - New York Yankees clinch their 7th pennant.
  • 1936 - Cleveland Indians' Bob Feller strikes out then record 17 in a game (versus Philadelphia Athletics).
  • 1942 - Chicago Cubs shortstop Leonard Merullo makes four errors in one inning.
  • 1949 - Ladies Pro Golf Association of America formed in New York City, New York.
  • 1963 - New York Yankees clinch their 28th pennant.
  • 1965 - Willie Mays hits his 500th home run.
  • 1971 - Frank Robinson hits his 500th home run.
  • 1971 - World Hockey Association is formed.
  • 1973 - ABC announces it obtained TV rights for the 1976 Olympics.
  • 1973 - US Congress passes and sends a bill to President Richard Nixon to lift football's blackout.
  • 1974 - Philadelphia Phillies set National League record, using 27 players in a game, Saint Louis Cardinals uses 24, tying record of 51. Philadelphia Phillies win 7-3 in 17.
  • 1978 - New York Yankees win to gain sole possession of first place from 14 games back.
  • 1981 - April Moon sets women's handbow distance record of 1,039 yards, 13 inches.
  • 1981 - Atlanta Falcons tie record of 31 points in fourth quarter (vs Green Bay Packers).
  • 1981 - John McEnroe beats Björn Borg for US Open title.
  • 1982 - Joe Lefevre gets six hits in one baseball game.
  • 1986 - Bert Blyleven gives up a record 44 home runs in a season.
  • 1988 - 10th time, four players hit baseball major-league record grand slams.
  • 1989 - Fay Vincent becomes Major League Baseball's eighth commissioner when he succeeds the late Bart Giamatti.
  • 1991 - Joe Coleman's third 100 RBI season in a row with three teams (Cleveland Indians, San Diego Padres, and Toronto Blue Jays).
  • 2001 - Due the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Major League Baseball postpones all games through September 17.
  • 2009 - In Monza, Italy, round 13 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship is won by Rubens Barrichello.
  • 2010 - Rafael Nadal wins the U.S. Open tennis championship, defeating Novak Djokovic 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
  • 2017 - The International Olympic Committee awards Paris, France and Los Angeles, California the right to host the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympics, respectively.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Atlanta Braves beats San Francisco Giants by score 5-1.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Diego Padres beats Seattle Mariners by score 2-0.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 4-0.

  • 2008 - Hurricane Ike hits Galveston, Texas, as Category 2, causing estimated damage of US$27 billion, 3rd costliest in US history.

USA history:

  • 1788 - New York City becomes capital of the United States.
  • 1789 - First loan to US Government (from New York City banks).
  • 1814 - Start of two-day bombardment of Fort McHenry (USA) by British naval forces.
  • 1841 - Walter Froward takes office as US Treasury Secretary.
  • 1867 - General E R S Canby orders South Carolina courts to impanel blacks jurors.
  • 1930 - A fireball plunges into the sea near Eureka, California.

  • 2001 - Due the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Major League Baseball postpones all games through September 17.
  • 2003 - Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon dies after suffering a stroke on September 8 in Chicago, Illinois. Joe Kernan, the Lieutenant Governor, is sworn in as Indiana's 48th Governor.
  • 2004 - The U.S. Assault Weapons Ban expires.
