- 1996 - Apple Computer releases the System 7.5.5 Macintosh operating system.
- 1927 - Universal Pictures releases the third Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film, Oh, Teacher, to theaters.
- 1952 - The Pluto film Pluto's Party is released. Mickey Mouse and several nephews also appear.

- 1971 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled Charlie Crowfoot and the Coati Mundi.
- 1984 - Michael Eisner convinces Sid Bass that he should be chairman, not president of Disney.
- 1986 - The ABC TV network airs the pilot movie Sidekicks. The film was previously aired as The Last Electric Knight.
- 1987 - The State Fair event is first held at Disneyland.
- 1990 - The CBS TV network debuts the Disney-produced series Lenny.
- 1995 - Disney releases the film The Lion King on laserdisc and videocassette in the UK.
- 1995 - Disney releases the film The Lion King on laserdisc in the US, for US$30-125.
- 1997 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film A Thousand Acres to theaters in the USA.
- 2000 - Disney releases the animated film The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea on videocassette.
- 2001 - Sid Bass tells Michael Eisner that the Bass family must sell a combined 135 million shares of Disney stock, representing 6.7 percent of the company total shares, worth US$2.2 billion.
- 2003 - Buena Vista releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Cold Creek Manor to theaters in the USA.
- 1976 - At the Road Atlanta raceway in Braselton, Georgia, an IMSA 500-km race is held.
- Finishing 6th in GTO class and 6th overall is the Corvette driven by Phil Currin.

- 1993 - The Franklin Mint Antique Automobile Festival is held. Included is a salute to the 40th anniversary of Corvette, with a display of one Corvette for each model year, the Wette Vette, the one-millionth Corvette, the Astro-Vette, and the Corvette Indy. Zora Arkus-Duntov and David Hill also attend.
- 1938 - Britain and France agree to Adolf Hitler's demands, and urge Czechoslovakia to give the Sudeten areas to Germany. If not, Great Britain and France could not be expected to help versus a German invasion.
- 1939 - (just before dawn) German infantry make an assault on French positions outside Saarbruken.
- 1939 - The Polish naval base of Gdynia falls to German forces.
- 1939 - The Polish Poznan Army of 100,000 surrenders to German Army Group South.
- 1939 - Adolf Hitler makes a speech at Danzig, saying Poland's fate is to be determined by Germany and Russia, and that he has accepted the western border, with no war aims against Britain or France. He also states that they may "use a weapon which is not yet known and with which we ourselves cannot be attacked". British intelligence personnel begin searching files of the Secret Intelligence Service for clues to the identity of the secret weapon.
- 1939 - Quote by British war correspondent Sir Philip Gibbs, on the German-Russian non-aggression treaty: "Germany has opened her gates to the Russian bear who one day will bite her throat".
- 1939 - Soviet Navy blockades Estonia's coast, claiming Polish and other submarines are hiding in neutral Baltic ports.
- 1939 - Soviet forces capture Vilna, Poland.
- 1939 - Czecho-Slovak Republic President Eduard Benes in London broadcasts a message on the BBC system, calling on his countrymen to continue to carry on the struggle against Germany.
- 1939 - The five Scandinavian countries make a joint declaration of firm neutrality, cooperating to safeguard their economic life, and continuing trade with all States.
- 1939 - Canada's cabinet approves a program to construct 110 ships for the war effort. Two types of small warships are approved: Flower-class corvettes, and Bangor-class minesweepers.
- 1940 - Japan notifies Indochina that their forces would cross the border.
- 1941 - In the Grand Harbor of Gibraltar, the British naval tanker Denbydale, cargo ship Durham, and tanker Fiona Shell explode from charges attached by midget submarines of the Italian navy.
- 1941 - 120 miles east of Cape Farewell, Greenland, Atlantic convoy SC-44 loses four merchant ships to submarine attacks. U-74 torpedoes and sinks Royal Canadian Navy corvette Levis.
- 1941 - In the Soviet Union, Kiev falls to German Army Group South forces. 665,000 men are captured, the largest number of prisoners ever captured in one battle, and the largest single military success in history. Kiev was defended for 72 days.
- 1942 - British Bomber Command makes its first daylight raid by Mosquitoes on Berlin, Germany.
- 1944 - In Canada, the Toronto Globe and Mail publishes a report by Major Connie Smythe accusing Canadian forces of lacking replacements, and that reinforcements are poorly trained.
- 1944 - Eight fighters of the 1st Czech Regiment attack 40 aircraft at the German airfield at Piestany in Slovakia. They destroy ten and damage at least ten more, with a loss of only one of their planes. As a result, Germans cease to use the field as a base against Slovak resistance.
- 1944 - American President Franklin Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill make a secret agreement that when an atomic bomb is available, it might be used on Japan.
- 1944 - The German garrison at Brest, France, surrenders.
- 1944 - Finland and the Soviet Union sign an armistice, ending the conflict between their countries.
- 1991 - Bermuda issues four postage stamps depicting Bermuda during World War II.
- 1994 - Luxembourg issues a 14-franc postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of liberation from German occupation.
- 2005 - The Faroe Islands issues two postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of the end of British occupation during World War II.
- 2000 - Activision releases the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 video game for the PlayStation in the US.
- 2005 - Nintendo releases the Game Boy Micro handheld video game system in the US. Availble in silver or black, with three different face plates. The system can play at Game Boy Advance cartridges, but not earlier Game Boy cartridges or the e-Reader. Size is 4 x 2 x 0.7 inches; price is US$99.99.
- 2006 - Capcom releases the Okami video game for the PlayStation 2 in the USA.
- 2006 - Atlus releases the Contact video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
- 2006 - Eidos releases the Just Cause video game for the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and Xbox in the US.
- 2006 - Square Enix releases the Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
- 2011 - Nintendo releases the Kirby Mass Attack video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
- 2017 - Take Two Interactive releases the NBA 2K18 video game for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch in the USA.

- 2005 - Television broadcasters in Sweden begin shutting down analog transmissions, beginning in Gotland.
- 1973 - Postmaster General André Ouellet holds a news conference to unveil the first series of designs for commemorative coins for the 1976 Olympic Games.
- 2009 - The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the designs of the last three 25-cent circulating coins in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games program. One features 2002 Men's Hockey, another features 2002 Women's Hockey, and the third features Cindy Klassen's medals of 2006. Each coin includes a red-colored maple leaf in the background.
- 1907 - Frank A. Leach becomes US Mint director.
- 1910 - The Denver Mint begins striking 1910-dated double eagles.
- 1968 - Cornerstone laying ceremony is held for construction of the fourth Philadelphia Mint building.
- 1879 - Thomas Ray becomes youngest to break a world track and field record pole-vaulting 11 feet 2.25 inches at age 17 years and 198 days.
- 1914 - Brooklyn Tip-Tops' pitcher Ed Lafitte no-hits Kansas City Packers (Federal League), 6-2.
- 1947 - Jackie Robinson is named Rookie of the Year.
- 1966 - Mike Burke is named New York Yankees president.
- 1973 - National League refuses to allow San Diego Padres move to Washington DC.
- 1982 - Seattle Mariners' rookie Orlando Mercado becomes third player to hit a grand slam for his first major league hit.
- 1982 - New Orleans Saints' first road shutout victory beating Chicago Bears 10-0.
- 1986 - Chicago White Sox player Joe Crowley no-hits California Angels, 7-1.
- 1988 - Greg Louganis suffers a head injury while qualifying for the Seoul Olympics and goes on to win two gold medals.
- 1989 - Appeals court restores America's Cup to US after New York Supreme Court gave it to New Zealand (New Zealand protested US's use of a catamaran).
- 1996 - The scoreboard at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York, falls to the ice just hours before a National Hockey League game; no one is injured.
- 2006 - In Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the spot at Hanlan Point where Babe Ruth hit his first professional home run is commemorated with a plaque. The historic home run came on September 5, 1914.
- 2008 - Major League Baseball's instant replay system produces its first reversal when Tampa Bay Rays' Carlos Pena had a two-run double changed to a three-run homer during the fourth inning against the Minnesota Twins. The initial umpire call was based on fan interference, which the video replay showed was not the case.
- 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 5-2.
- 2022 - At Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Colorado Rockies by score 10-7.

- 2001 - In the light of the New York attack by terrorists the German Bundestag votes full support and solidarity with the USA, including military support.
- 2001 - Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf announces decision to support US-led intervention against Taliban in Afghanistan, mainly to keep US from allying with India.
- 2010 - The oil well in the Gulf of Mexico is finally sealed, after leaking about 4.9 million barrels of oil since April 20.
